Died: Thursday, December 13, 2001
McARTHUR -- A graveside service for Harry S. Hamilton of Arizona, formerly of McArthur, will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Elk Cemetery in McArthur. Mr. Hamilton died Dec. 13, 2001, in Arizona.
Born March 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Herbert S. and Frances Reynolds Hamilton. He is survived by children Herbert and David Hamilton, and Debra Martin.
Albert Elick Jr.
Died: Saturday, January 26, 2002
LOGAN -- Albert Berdel Elick Jr., 79, of Logan, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in the skilled nursing unit of Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.
Born June 1, 1922, in Colon, Panama, he was the son of the late Albert B. and Margaret Eva Parker Elick Sr. He is survived b his wife, Kathryn Ileen Mundy Elick.
Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, with military services by the Combined Veterans of Hocking County.
Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to services. A Masonic service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
Grover Fitch
Died: Saturday, January 26, 2002
WELLSTON -- Grover Butch A. Fitch, 54, of Wellston, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at his home.
Born Jan. 4, 1948, in Gallipolis, he was the son of the late Ira E. and Norma Jean Collins Fitch. He is survived by daughters Jennifer Kipp and Grace Cochran.
Services will be Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Jason R. Winters Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Gary Davis
Died: Friday, January 25, 2002
ALBANY -- Gary L. Davis, 56, of Route 50, Albany, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in the emergency room of O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 4., 1945, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Herbert and Arlene Beckley Davis. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a laborer for Selkirk Metalbestos, a life member of Albany VFW Post 9893 and Albany AMVETS Post 93, and a member of Logan Eagles Aerie 2168.
He is survived by his wife, Ramona Jones Davis; two daughters, Donna (Jesse) Barnhart of Albany and Brenda (Scott) Gray of Athens; three sons, John (Angela) Spires or Rutland, Gary D. (Misty) Davis of Albany, and Arron Davis of Albany; and eight grandchildren, Jesslyn Barnhart, Zach, Jarrod and Jacob Gray, Joshua and Samantha Spires, and Eric and Levi Davis. He is also survived by a sister, Carolyn (Roger) Stiltner, and a brother, Bob (Colleen) Davis, both of Albany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Davis.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with the Rev. Edward Jones officiating. Burial will be in Temple Cemetery, with graveside military services by Albany VFW Post 9893.

Clark DeVol
Died: Friday, January 25, 2002
CARBON HILL -- Clark A. DeVol, 72, of Lancaster, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Rockmill Rehabilitation Center. He fought a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church on George Road in Lancaster. He was the retired director of veterans benefits for the state of Ohio, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, a life member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Fairfield Post 11, 40 et 8 and AMVETS, and he served on the Fairfield County Veterans Service Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie E. Devol of Lancaster; sons, Ross (Melissa) DeVol of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Rob R. DeVol of Lancaster; grandchildren, Nicholas A. DeVol and Shawn C. DeVol of Lancaster, Clark C. and Claire J. DeVol of Woodland Hills; his mother, Marjorie DeVol of Carbon Hill; his twin brother and sister-in-law, Calvin E. and Betty DeVol of Buchtel; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann and Robert Mayer of Athens.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald O. DeVol, and a sister, Carolyn Marie Maisch.
Services will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, Lancaster, with the Rev. Jeff Jewell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Rose Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be given to American Legion Post 11, 154 E. Main St., Lancaster.
Estel Jacobs
Died: Thursday, January 24, 2002
WELLSTON -- Estel H. Jacobs, 89, of Wellston, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Edgewood Manor of Wellston.
Born May 20, 1912, in Wellston, he was the son of the late Albert and Hazel Stephenson Jacobs. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Reed Jacobs.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home, Wellston, with military services at Ridgewood Cemetery by American Legion Post 371.

Earl Goodin
Died: Wednesday, January 23, 2002
ALBANY -- Earl Goodin, 69, of State Street, Albany, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence, following a brief illness.
Born April 8, 1932, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Lola Faye Ruse Goodin. He was a retired captain of the Athens Fire Department, where he served for 30 years. He had taught fire schools all over Southeastern Ohio since the early 1960s. In 1979, he attended Ohio State Fire School and became a certified instructor, and he taught basic and advanced firefighting in area departments.
He was past president and honorary life member of the Athens County Firefighters Association, a life member and honorary dean of the Hocking Valley Regional Fire School. He was a self-employed painter and worked at remodeling in the Athens area for more than 40 years. At the time of his death, he was a member of Albany Village Council and also had served as village administrator. He also was an avid garden tractor puller.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Bobo Goodin; three sons, William (Cathy) of Glen Ridge, N.J., Robert (Rita) of Albany and Richard (Vickie) of Circleville; a daughter, Debra (James) Turner of Albany; seven grandchildren, Melissa Turner of Albany, Michael and Kaitlin Goodin of Circleville, Scott Lee, Kris, Nick and Krista Farley; a special friend who was like a brother, Harold (Mary) Powers of Richmond, Va.; a sister-in-law, Bessie Goodin of Albany; nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Mary Bobo.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer and Pearl Goodin; a sister, Dorothy Goodin; and a nephew, John Goodin.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with Pastor John Elswick officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

Holly Hoyd
Died: Wednesday, January 23, 2002
McARTHUR -- Holly Harold Hoyd, 80, of McArthur, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Kimes Convalescent Center, Athens.
Born June 19, 1921, in Elk Twp., Vinton County, he was the son of the late Thomas Everett and Mabel Leona Castor Hoyd.
He is survived by a sister, Bertina Hayes of McArthur; three children, Carolyn (Harold) Burritt of Albany, Tom (Karen) Hoyd of Pickerington and Harold Hoyd of Zaleski; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Charles.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.
Jean Donaldson
Died: Tuesday, January 22, 2002
THE PLAINS -- Jean Donaldson, 70, of The Plains, died Jan. 22, 2002, in Hamilton. She is survived by three daughters, Susie White, Rosie Smith and Kathy Evans; and her husband, Todd Dickens of The Plains. Graveside services were at Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield.
Gweneth Skelly
Died: Tuesday, January 22, 2002
LOGAN -- Gweneth Skelly, 72, of Logan, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Logan.
Born May 12, 1929, in Chadds Ford, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Warren and Olivia Criswell Jackson.
She is survived by daughters Miriam Stidham and Martha Hoffecker.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, 3 p.m., at Turkey Run Mennonite Church. Arrangements are by Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan.
James Whitlatch
Died: Tuesday, January 22, 2002
NELSONVILLE -- James L. Whitlatch, 82, of Nelsonville, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1919, in Nelsonville, he was the son of the late Wirt and Maude Lowery Whitlatch. He was a member of Nelsonville First Christian Church and a 50-year member of Nelsonville Philodorian Masonic Lodge 157 F&AM, 32nd Degree of Scottish Rite. He retired from Iron Workers Union Local 72 in Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Midkiff Whitlatch of Nelsonville; two grandchildren, Gary Sullivan and Allan (Julia) Sullivan of Nelsonville; two great-grandchildren, Malori and Macy Sullivan of Nelsonville; a son-in-law, Dave Sullivan of Nelsonville; a sister, Louella Andrews of Buchtel; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Sullivan; a brother, Basil Whitlatch; and a sister, Dorothy Richardson.
Private graveside services will be held Friday at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, with Elder Tom Hanning officiating. Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville.
The family requests that contributions be made to a charity of choice.
