Dr. Ray F. Spring
Died: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Age: 77
ATHENS -- Dr. Ray F. Spring, 77, of Huntsville, Ala., formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003.
Dr. Spring was born in Cincinnati, attended Walnut Hills High School, graduated from the University of Cincinnati and received a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Champaign. He taught at Ohio University as a full professor of mathematics for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of the U.S. Chess Association, an avid coin collector and sang in the choir at Athens First Presbyterian Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, David Spring; daughter, JoAnne Hake; and grandchildren Philip and Brian Hake, Stephanie and Samuel Spring.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole Spring, in 1985.
Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Craig Seitz officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday one hour prior to services.

Jim L. Comer
Died: Tuesday, January 14, 2003
Age: 42
LOGAN -- Jim L. Comer, 42, of Logan, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at his residence.
Born Oct. 28, 1960, in Gallipolis, he was the son of Betty J. Newsome Comer of Logan and the late Marvin Comer.
Services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at Knollwood Cemetery, Logan.

Helen A. Dishong
Died: Tuesday, January 14, 2003
Age: 70
NELSONVILLE -- Helen A. Dishong, 70, of Shade, formerly of Nelsonville, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Winchester Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Canal Winchester.
Born Dec. 7, 1932, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Kathleen Hartley Anderson. She was the widow of Clarence "Jack" Dishong.
She was retired from the Athens Mental Health Center, was an auxiliary member of VFW Post 3467 and a member of Nelsonville First Christian Church, was an avid bingo player and was a former singer with Nelsonville's Berean Theatre.
She is survived by two sons, James A. (Kay) Dishong of Nelsonville and George F. (Beth) Dishong of Athens; a daughter, Charlene (Joseph) Sinkowski of Shade; five grandchildren, Dwayne Mays, Toby (Carol) Dishong, Rebecca Dishong, Crystal Sinkowski and Katie Sinkowski; two great-grandchildren, Jessica Dishong and Taylor Dishong; a brother, Charles (Marjorie) Anderson of Dresden; three sisters, Alma Jo (Orville) Midkiff of Nelsonville, Pat (James) Angel of Circleville and Raphael Yorde (Howard Houston) of Nelsonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Anderson.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Interment will be in Connett Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Daniel W. Dowler
Died: Tuesday, January 14, 2003
Age: 50
THE PLAINS -- Daniel W. Dowler, 50, of The Plains, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 21, 1952, in Nelsonville, he was the son of Dorothy Jameson Dowler of Athens and the late Junior Cecil Dowler. He was a 1971 graduate of Athens High School and a 1973 graduate of Hocking Technical College. He was a former employee of Seaman's Grocery, with 20 years of service. His and his partner, Herb Brown, worked together for more than 10 years at CrossRoads Convenience Stores in three locations in the Athens area. After Herb retired in 2000, Dan became owner of The One Place to Stop Citgo Convenience Store in The Plains.
He was a member of Athens Elks, The Plains VFW Post 7174 and The Plains Indian Mound Festival Committee. He currently was petitioning Athens Masonic Lodge. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and enjoyed motorcycling and trapshooting. He was a devoted father and loving husband, and a well-respected member of the area and business community.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Conkle Dowler; a daughter, Kristin Jean Dowler of the home; a sister, Pauline (Robert) Gilbert of North Carolina; three brothers, Paul (Linda) Dowler of Athens, Robert (Joy) Dowler of The Plains and James (Michaela Whitt) Dowler of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Lydia Dowler of Litchfield; seven nieces and four nephews; seven grandnieces and 12 grandnephews, and many loving friends.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Edward Dowler.
Memorial services celebrating Dan's life will be held Sunday, 7 p.m., at Athens Elks Lodge on West Union Street. Visiting hours will follow the service (the family will meet at 5 p.m.).

Thelma Marjorie Green

Age: 79
SHADE -- Thelma Marjorie Green, 79, of Shade, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Euclid Hospital.
Born in Athens County on April 30, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Florence Hall Sycks. A graduate of Chauncey-Dover High School, Mrs. Green was employed by Woolworth's in Athens. She was a longtime Athens County resident and a member of the Middleport Congregation of Jehovah's Witness.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene H. Green; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jeff Pollock of Zanesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sharon Green of Euclid; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Weekley of Hebron; and brothers Stanley Sycks of Akron, and Harold Sycks and Jack Sycks of Athens.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lavina Sycks and Marjorie Tittle; and a brother, Lawrence Sycks.
A memorial service for Thelma Marjorie Green, 79, of Shade, will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Burial of ashes will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Mary Jacquelyn Hagen

NELSONVILLE -- Mary Jacquelyn "Jackie" Hagen died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in California.
Born July 25, 1927, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late Edna and Howard Miner. She was a former resident of Trimble.
She is survived by four children, Janice Armstrong, Barbara Berry, Richard and Robert Hagen.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hagen.

Howard Jarvis
Died: Tuesday, January 14, 2003
Age: 81
WELLSTON -- Howard Jarvis, 81, of Wellston, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Bishop, and a son, Alan Jarvis. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dora Jarvis.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial wikth military services will be in Salem Cemetery.

Kay E. Shaw
Died: Tuesday, January 14, 2003
Age: 63
COLUMBUS -- Kay E. Shaw, 63, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Kobacker House.
She was a retired registered nurse at Ohio State University Student Health Center and a member of Hogue Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; children Beth (Robert) Bogard and John (Angelia) Shaw; grandchildren Erik Bogard, Matthew, Katherine and Mark Shaw; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Maude Linscott.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad St., Columbus, with Pastor Mark McCulla officiating.
Contributions may be made to the James Cancer Hospital.

Inez Jago Johnston
Died: Tuesday, January 7, 2003
AMESVILLE -- Inez "Maxine" Jago Johnston passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at a nursing home in Delaware.
Born Sept. 7, 1917, in Ames Twp., Athens County, She was the daughter of the late Arthur Clark Sr. and Delta Lucille Lochary Jago. She graduated from Ames-Bern High School in 1935.
She was married to John Franklin Johnston. They had two daughters, Lydia Mae Johnston of Delaware and Patricia Johnston, who died as a child. She has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of the Delaware area.
She also is survived by brothers and sisters, Phyllis Marie Jago Wilson, Allen Leslie Jago, Joyce Dianne Jago Burgess, Ashia Joel Jago and Aaron Bryan Jago, all of Amesville, Arnold Roy Jago of London, and Addison Dean Jago of Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Irene Lucille Jago Wolfe, Arthur C. Jago Jr. and Adrian Henry Jago.
She was buried in Mound Hill Cemetery, Ames Twp., Amesville.
