MIDDLEPORT -- Wilkie Holman, 78, of Middleport, died Wednesday April 24, 2002, in Middleport.
Born Jan. 14, 1924, in Racine, he was the son of the late John and Minnie Lee Danielson Holman.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lu Grogan Holman.
Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Virginia Harper
Died: Monday, April 22, 2002
CROOKSVILLE -- Virginia Harper, 79, of 1577 Twp. Road 196 N.E. in Crooksville, formerly of Route 37E in Corning, and a former resident of Albany, died Monday afternoon, April 22, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, following an extended illness.
Born June 7, 1922, in Glomawr, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Agnes Green Watson. She was a homemaker and a member Jehovah's Witness Church of Crooksville.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Gary) Allen of Crooksville and Beverly (Randy) Haning of Athens; a son, Bruce (Susan) Harper of Crooksville; a sister, Polly (Tommy) Sizemore of Hazzard, Ky.; a brother, Gary (Donna) Watson of Hazzard; a half sister, Blanche Sexton of Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Samantha and Sarah Haning, Mark Allen, Michelle Rodgers, Amy Moore, Angela Harper and Travis Harper; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernice Harper, on Nov. 17, 2000; three brothers, James, Russell and Larry Watson; and a half sister, Lois Faulkner.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Goebel Funeral Home, 36 N. Buckeye St., Crooksville, with Jack Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Portersville.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

William Lasure
Died: Monday, April 22, 2002
ALBANY -- William "Bill" Lasure, 63, of Albany, died unexpectedly early Monday morning, April 22, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born in Athens on March 13, 1939, he was the son of the late Clarence L. Sr. and Clella Byrd Lasure. A 1957 graduate of Athens High School, he was the former owner and operator of Pro-Auto Parts on Columbus Road. Earlier in life, he was employed at Ferd Hack Auto Parts Co. He was an Air Force veteran, serving in Europe.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Thelma Weekley Lasure; sisters Ida (Glenn) Foughty of Columbus, JoAnn (Dean) Hardy of Magnolia, Texas, and Martha (Melvin) Walraven of Columbus; brothers Everett (Wanda) Lasure of The Plains and Richard (Esther) Lasure of Millfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Clarice Thomas; a brother, Clarence Lasure Jr.; and nephews Danny Lasure and Ev Lasure.
Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by minister Willard Love.

Robert Watkins
Died: Thursday, April 18, 2002
ROCKBRIDGE -- Robert Fitch "Bob" Watkins, 79, of Rockbridge, went to be with the Lord of Thursday, April 18, 2002, when he died at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born April 25, 1922, in Enterprise, son of the late Ison Fitch and Magnolia Frances Phipps Watkins.
He was married to Florence Lucille Wright Watkins, who survives.
Mr. Watkins was a former truck driver for Commercial Motor Freight, where he had worked for 26 years. He operated the Bob Watkins Family Farms, where he was noted for his delicious sweet corn, pumpkins and beef.
He was a 1942 graduate of Logan High School, and was a member of Gideon International, Hocking County Farm Bureau and Kline Memorial United Methodist Church.
He also is survived by sons Robin Lee (Lois) Watkins and Rodney Vee (Tammy) Watkins of Rockbridge; two grandchildren, Brandon Seth Watkins and Ashley Ann Watkins of Rockbridge; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy E. Watkins of Logan.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight W. Watkins, in 1996.
Funeral services will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Monday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Clarence M. Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery, Falls Twp., Hocking County.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Viola Deem
Died: Friday, April 5, 2002
MURRAY CITY -- Viola Belle Olie Lyons Deem, 95, of Parkersburg, W.Va., went to be with her Lord, as her family gathered by her, on Friday April 5, 2002, at Eagle Pointe.
She was born in Wirt County, W.Va., on April 23, 1906, the second daughter of the late Monroe Lyons and Mary Belle Allman Lyons Wines. She was a former member of Rose Hill Methodist Church in Wirt County. In 1926, she moved to the Mineral Wells community and joined Big Tygart United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of her church's Women's Society of Christian Service, now called United Methodist Women, and also served as the group's first president. She served as a communion steward for years, and worked with the children and youth programs. She was a Sunday school teacher, a 4-H helper and a member of Salisbery Homemakers Club.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Dorothy and Bernard Whited of Murray City, Virginia and Paul Caltrider of Zionsville, Ind., and Mary Grace Hill of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren, Michael Whited of Parkersburg, Sherry Whited Shields of Blue Ridge, Va., Jeffrey Caltrider of Jacksonville, Fla., Steve Caltrider and Beth Caltrider Price of Zionsville, Todd Hill of Parkersburg, Tim Hill of New England, W.Va., and Stacy Hill Succop of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister Augusta Peg Pyles of Slate, W.Va.; and a stepsister, Nellie Wine Dennewitz of Parkersburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Britten F. Deem, in 1974; four brothers, the Rev. James Lyons, Okey Lyons, Theodore "Ted" Lyons and Walter "Bud" Lyons; a sister, Goldie Leach; and an infant grandson, David Whited.
Services were held today at Big Tygart United Methodist Church. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens. Arrangements were by Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg.
Violet Shields
Died: Monday, March 25, 2002
CHAUNCEY -- Violet G. Shields, 97, of Chauncey, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Kimes Convalescent Center in Athens.
Born Feb. 10, 1905, in Circle Hill, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Anna May Fink. She was former co-owner of Dover Cleaners and Laundromat in Chauncey, along with her late husband, Homer, her late son, Lewis Shields, and his wife, Elma Shields. She was a member of Athens First Church of God.
She is survived by two daughters, Beulah "Boots" Potts of Glouster and Viola "Peg" Stout of Athens; a special niece, Nita F. Daugherty of Chauncey; six grandchildren, James D. Seiber, Deborah F. Ingledue, Jennifer L. Mender, Tamara L. Camechis, Lewis "Mickey" Shields and Edward L. Shields; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special neighbors Gerald and JoAnn Sorrells.
Besides her parents, husband and son, she was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Billy Joe Schoonover, Terry D. Shields and Christopher A. Bolin; and five brothers and four sisters.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens, with the Rev. William Shepler officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Velma Murphy
Died: Saturday, March 23, 2002
ATHENS -- Velma Marie "Tiny" Murphy, 67, of Athens, died Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 24, 1935, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Okey and Dorcus Amelia Perry Murphy. Tiny attended The Plains Schools and was a lifelong Athens-area resident.
She is survived by eight sisters and six brothers-in-law, Dorothy Mae (Shirley) Hickman of Senecaville, Goldie Russell of Athens, Betty (Floyd) McGrath of Columbus, Lulu Belle (Bob) Blackstone of Athens, Elizabeth (Gary) Chambers of Lancaster, Phyllis (Danny) Holley of Athens, Carolyn (Charles) Fletcher of Nelsonville, and Linda Crowley and her friend Ray Lowry, of Columbus; two brothers and a sister-in-law, "John" Calvin (Debra C.) Murphy of Athens, with whom she made her home, and Henry Murphy of Rushville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Murphy and Opal Wagner; and a brother, James Walter Murphy.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, with Pastor Helen Kline officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.

Virginia Waterman
Died: Saturday, March 16, 2002
DELAWARE -- Virginia I. Waterman, 84, of Delaware, formerly of the Enterprise area, died Saturday, March 16, 2002.
Born April 8, 1917, in Ripley, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Kinsey Hartley and Nellie Hartley.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen I. Fields.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Rockbridge.

MIDDLEPORT -- Virginia Allison-Melcher, 64, of Middleport, died Friday, March 15, 2002.
Born Oct, 17, 1937, in Slippery Rock, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ruth Work Allison.
