Herbert "Denny" Denver Carson

Age: 76
Herbert Denver “Denny” Carson, 76, of Leesburg, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 2003) at Heartland of Hillsboro. His wife, Mildred Smith Carson, survives. They were married May 31, 1945, in Maysville, Ky.
Mr. Carson was born April 17, 1927, in Brown County, son of the late Howard and Florence Donohoo Carson. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II, and also served in the Air Force Reserve. He was a retired Air Force government employee, having worked as a plumber and steam fitter for nearly 30 years at the Clinton County Air Force Base. He and his wife owned and operated Carson Plumbing and Heating and Mildred’s Camper Sales in Leesburg. He was a member of the Wilmington Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1224. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley P. (Carl) Fetters of Leesburg; two sons, Lawrence E. (Linda) Carson of Leesburg and Richard D. (Gretchen) Carson of Leesburg; four brothers, Floyd (Betty) Carson of Cleveland, Norman (Jane) Carson of Port Clinton, Vernon (Maxine) Carson of Greenfield and Myron (Golda) Carson of Henderson, Nev.; a sister-in-law, Joyce Carson of Leesburg; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Linley Carson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the TURNER FUNERAL HOME, 73 E. Main St., Leesburg, the Rev. Robert Carroll and Pastor John Fitzgerald officiating, with burial in Highland Cemetery. The Highland County honor guard will provide military honors. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be the Leesburg Area Life Squad, P.O. C. Vincent Fairley
Died: Friday, September 05, 2003
Age: 87
C. Vincent Fairley, 87, of Leesburg, died Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. His wife, Delma Dwyer Fairley, survives. They were married June 14, 1941, in the Greenfield United Methodist Church.
Mr. Fairley was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Leesburg, the only child of the late Charles Ernest and Winnifred Ora Leaverton Fairley. He was a prominent lifelong area farmer, specializing in raising sheep. He and his wife traveled the world extensively and loved to share their experiences with family and friends. A 1934 graduate of Leesburg High School, he was the school’s first FFA president. He was a faithful lifelong member of the Leesburg Friends Church, where he was active in the Golden Rule Sunday school class. He also held the clerk position with the church, Fairfield Quarterly Meeting and the Wilmington Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. He also held leadership positions with the Highland County Farm Bureau and Landmark organizations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael (Darlene) Fairley of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter Alice Teeters of Leesburg; four cherished grandchildren, Nathan (Lani) Teeters of Leesburg, Travis (Haley) Teeters of Leesburg, Melissa Teeters of Leesburg and Andrew Fairley of Seattle; and a precious great-granddaughter, Paige Teeters of Leesburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Leesburg Friends Church, Pastor John Fitzgerald and Pastor Mike Daye officiating, with burial in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leesburg Friends Church, 149 South St., Leesburg, 45135. The TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Hillsboro is serving the family.
Goldie M. Swartz

Age: 87
Goldie M. Swartz, 87, of Sabina, died Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Swartz, who died in 1983. They were married Aug. 23, 1947.
Mrs. Swartz was born June 3, 1916, daughter of Warren and Hazel Mock Swartz. She was a member of the Sabina Senior Citizens and the Center United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna (Floyd) Woolever of New Holland, Diana Kay Maddux of New Holland and Denise Ranck of Sabina; a son, Dennis (Bonnie) Swartz of Waverly; four grandchildren, Christina and Kyle Ranck, Heath Maddux and Jason Woolever; a great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Maddux; and a special friend, Charlie Lawson and her son, Elijah; and a brother, Raymond (Ella) Swartz of Hillsboro.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Sylvia Swartz, Mildred Pauley, Martha Hodge and Neva Green; and a brother, Maynard Swartz.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina, with burial in New Holland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the DSSO of Wilmington.
Nola June Bryant

Age: 53
Nola June Bryant, 53, of Clarksville, formerly of Oregonia, died Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at her residence.
Nola was born Aug. 30, 1950, daughter of the late Nolie and Grace Powell. She retired in 2000 as part owner and manager of Papa’s Restaurant in Roachester after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Solid Rock Church.
Nola is survived by a son, Danny (Jamie) Stern of Harveysburg; two daughters, April Bryant of Morrow and Mindy (Rocky) Burnell of Maineville; seven grandchildren, Megan, Cameron, Symphony, London, Patience, Beverly Kay and Luci; two sisters, Shirley E. Walter of Clarksville and Bonnie (Troy) Parker of Oregonia; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Howell.
A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Pastor Darlene Bishop officiating, with interment in the Miami Cemetery in Corwin. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The STUBBS-CONNER FUNERAL HOME, Waynesville, is serving the family.
Carl H. Smith

Age: 65
Carl H. Smith, 65, of Hillsboro, died Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at the Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. He is survived by his former wife, Emma Lou Adams, of Hillsboro.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 10, 1937, in Xenia, son of the late George and Lottie Brittingham Smith. He was a retired carpet installer. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Korean War and was active for six years in the naval reserves and Marine Corps. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
In addition to his former wife, Mr. Smith is survived by four daughters, Carla Owen of Georgia, Teresa (Arnold) Nickell of Centerville, Traci (Jim Jeffries) Williford of Dayton and Vickie (Kenny) Ruppert of Riverside; 10 grandchildren, Robert Owen, Angie Owen, Carolyn Owen, Jimmie Norman, Jeremy Norman, Shannon Williford, Brandy Williford, Tina Williford, Jamie Allen and Tessa Ruppert; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Miller, Carlie Miller and Logan Alexander Owen; three brothers, Bill (Janice) Smith of Beavercreek, Larry Smith of Bowersville and Melvin Smith of Xenia; a sister, Maxine Stewart of Xenia; a sister-in-law, Beverly Smith of Xenia; three stepchildren, Melinda (Rick) Watson of Hillsboro, Greg (Pam) Adams of Wilmington and Zack (Julie) Adams of New Vienna; nine stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and three nieces and a nephew, Carla Stewart, Pamela McDonald, Penny Jarnagin and William Smith Jr.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by five brothers, Alva Smith, Thomas Smith, Clarence Smith, Archie Smith and Wesley Smith.
A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at the LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St. in Sabina, with interment in the Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
J. Gregory Meek
Died: Friday, September 05, 2003
Age: 50
J. Gregory Meek, 50, of Lebanon and formerly of Wilmington, died Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at Bethesda North Hospital. His wife, of 25 years, Rebecca Wood-Meek of Lebanon, survives.
Mr. Meek was born May 10, 1953, in Columbus, son of Madelaine Means Meek of Lebanon and the late Henry Kenneth Meek. He was a 1971 graduate of Wilmington High School and attended Ohio University. He worked at Fujitec before retiring in 1996. He enjoyed coaching youth soccer in the Lebanon area and women’s softball in Wilmington.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Ashley Meek of Lebanon; and two sisters, Amanda Schutte of Lebanon and Melinda Meek of Lakewood.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of OSWALD-HOSKINS FUNERAL HOME, Lebanon.
