Richard "Dick" Perry
Died: Tuesday, January 13, 2004
Age: 60
Richard “Dick” Perry, 60, of Wilmington, died 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2004) at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Patricia “Kay” Perry. They were married June 11, 1966.
Mr. Perry was born Nov. 19, 1943, in New Richmond, son of Betty Jo McCann Perry of Seaman and the late Orville Lee Perry. He retired in 2000 from Quality Quaker Management after 20 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49. He enjoyed bowling and golf. He attended the First Church of God in Wilmington. He graduated in 1961 from Sardinia High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Richard Perry Jr. of Wilmington and Matthew (Nicole) Perry of Jamestown; a daughter, Tara (Craig) Michael of Sabina; a brother, Roger Perry of Seaman; a sister, Kaye Perry of Peebles; three grandchildren, Latisha Perry, Austin Michael and Griffen Perry; two stepgrandchildren, Malacai McDufford and Aria Bailey; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death a brother, David “Dobe” Perry.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, the Rev. Ray Storer officiating, with burial in Locust Grove Cemetery, Peebles. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Gordon "Buddy" Blaine Cordell
Died: Monday, January 12, 2004
Age: 69
Gordon Blaine “Buddy” Cordell, 69, died Monday (Jan. 12, 2004) at the University of Cincinnati Hospital after being ill for five years. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mary E. Medley Cordell. They were united in holy matrimony Nov. 10, 1953, and celebrated their 50th anniversary last November.
Mr. Cordell was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Dayton, son of the late Earl and Armina Cordell. He moved to Wilmington in October 1947 and graduated in 1953 from Wilmington High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and in 1970 he began working for Lebanon Correctional Institution. He went through the ranks and became the first black captain at the institution. While at Lebanon Correctional Institution, he touched many people’s lives, impacting most for the good. He retired in 1998. He was a member of the Christian Science Society of Hillsboro, and after his illness in 1998, he attended Solid Rock Church in Monroe and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He received a Mason degree in 1961 from United 115 Prince Hall, and received a 32nd Mason degree from Miami Consistory in Troy. He was a member of Amer 107 Shrine in Dayton. He attended the Carnegie Institute and earned a degree as a lab and X-ray technician. He received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Wilmington College and Hocking Technical. He attended the Springfield School of Business and received an associate’s degree in accounting and business administration. He was a board member of the Clinton County YMCA. He was an avid swimmer, and in 1997 received a plaque from the YMCA for swimming 4,000 miles. He also enjoyed sports and faithfully followed his daughters to their softball games. He was a people person who was very outspoken and often times was blunt. He was not concerned if people did or did not agree with what he said as long as they knew what he meant. He was a giving person, and if anyone needed something and he had it, he would give it, even though the person may have had to endure a fussing first (smile). He was an excellent writer, with the penmanship to match. He loved his family and was always trying to make things better for them. His family will cherish his memory.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Leticia E. (Dennis) Thomas of Middletown and Sheila E. Cordell of Wilmington; two brothers, Hubert (LeGene) Cordell of Wilmington and Macey (Linda) Cordell of Jeffersonville; four grandsons, Gregory Williams Jr., Aaron (Terri) Cordell of Columbus, Gordon (Sherri Cordell III of Cuba and Cameron Cordell of Columbus; a stepgranddaughter, Monae Berry of Middletown; nine great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Gordon Blaine Jr. and Don O’Neal Cordell; a sister, Bonnie E. Burns; a brother, Don O’Neal; and a loving grandmother, Auroa Williams.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington. Arrangements are under the direction of HALL-JORDAN & PRETTY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 918 S. Main St. Middletown.
Gary L. Cline
Died: Friday, December 26, 2003
Age: 54
Gary L. Cline, 54, of Tuscon, Ariz., formerly of Reesville, died Dec. 26, 2003, in Tuscon, Ariz.
He was a son of the late William Cline Jr. and Betty Lou Polk Cline. He was a painter and graduated in 1968 from East Clinton High School.
He is survived by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina.
Pauline JoAnn Young
Died: Tuesday, June 03, 2003
Age: 70
Pauline JoAnn Young, 70, of Wilmington, died Tuesday (June 3, 2003) at Hospice of Dayton.
She was born Aug. 20, 1932, in Blanchester, daughter of the late Frank and Ruth Bean Ohnewehr. She was a retired registered nurse.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa (Seppo Karkkainen) Young of Bonn, Germany; a son, Tim (Sonya Dykes) Young of Wilmington; and two grandchildren, Terra Young and Brian Young, both of Wilmington.
According to her wishes, Mrs. Young’s body was cremated. No visitation or funeral services are scheduled. FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, Wilmington, is in charge of arrangements.
Arnold Colyer
Died: Monday, June 02, 2003
Age: 80
Arnold Colyer, 80, of Blanchester, died Monday (June 2, 2003) at Blanchester Care Center, where he had been a patient for five days. His wife, Glendene Swearingen Colyer, survives.
Mr. Colyer was born Jan. 4, 1923, in Tateville, Ky., son of John Andy and Lucy Ellen Morrow Colyer. He was a retired truck driver.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Charles (Annie) Colyer of Cincinnati, Michael (Janet) Colyer of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Kenny (Janet) Colyer of Fairborn; a stepdaughter, Laura Strickland of London, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia (Steve) Hobar, Louise McMullen and Christine Neal; and a brother, Clifford Colyer.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie, and several brothers and sisters.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be in the Blancheser I.O.O.F. Cemetery at a later date. LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina, is in charge of arrangements.
Rylie Michael Horn
Died: Monday, June 02, 2003
Rylie Michael Horn, son of Robert and Rhonda Carey Horn of Effingham, Ill., was stillborn 6:44 p.m. Monday (June 2, 2003) in Indianapolis, Ind.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Kay Carey of Sabina and Harry W. Carey of Wilmington; paternal grandmother, Joanne Horn of Dayton; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. Rylie had already touched many lives and will continue to illuminate our paths for years to come.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Dr. Richard E. Horn.
A memorial service will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, 200 W. Dayton St., Lewisburg. A graveside service will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rylie Horn Memorial Fund, c/o Lewisburg United Methodist Church, P.O. Douglas E. Ayers
Died: Monday, June 02, 2003
Age: 78
Douglas E. Ayers, 78, of Xenia, died Monday morning (June 2, 2003) at Greene Memorial Hospital, Xenia. His wife, Barbara DuFau Ayers, died Jan. 20, 1997.
Mr. Ayers was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Klamath Falls, Ore., son of Claude and Eva Tetrault Ayers. He was the retired owner of the Modern Trailer Court in Xenia. He was a member of St. Brigid Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was an assistant scout master of St. Brigid Boy Scout Troop 140. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II. He was a dear husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping with his family and Scout troop. He will always be remembered by his children and grandchildren for his great love and respect for nature and animals.
He is survived by two daughters, Claudia (Andrew) Kuntz of Wooster and LaTisha (James) Faler of Xenia; a son, Philip (Candie) Ayers of Beavercreek; seven grandchildren, Heather Kuntz (Jason) Henthorne, Molly Kuntz (Darin) Row, Kenneth Faler, Maria Faler, Noah Faler, Jason Ayers and Jackie Ayers; a great-grandson, Andrew John Row; a brother, Duane Ayers of Xenia; a sister, Doris (Gene) Smith of Dayton; and a special friend, Betty Liming, whom he loved dearly.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Brigid Church, 312 Fairground Road, Xenia, the Rev. Kenneth Schartz officiating, with burial in Sabina Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the NEELD FUNERAL HOME, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the St. Brigid Boy Scout Troop 140.
Robert Alexander Tucker
Died: Sunday, June 01, 2003
Age: 85
Robert Alexander Tucker, 85, of Wilmington, died 12:30 p.m. Sunday (June 1, 2003) at Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence. His wife, Edith Johnson Tucker, survives. They were married Oct. 3, 1947.
Mr. Tucker was born Aug. 16, 1917, in Victoria, Va., son of the late John and Mary Walker Tucker. He was secretary-treasurer for the Champion Bridge Company in Wilmington, the company he retired from Aug. 1, 1982 after 32 years of service. He also served as auditor for the city of Wilmington from 1952 to 1959. He was a veteran of World War II, when he was a captain in the U.S. Air Force and served as a navigator on a B24 Liberator with the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bomb Group, which was stationed in Wendling, England. In 1946, he was stationed at the Clinton County Air Force Base, where he served as finance officer and navigator on the all-weather flights to Andrews Air Force Base. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. A 1934 graduate of Victoria High School in Victoria, Va., he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1941 from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Victoria, Va., and a lifetime member of the B.P.O. Elks 797. He was a member of the Order of White Jackets and the Old Guard at The College of William and Mary. He served on the boards of directors at Snow Hill Country Club and Wilmington Savings Bank. He was a former member of the Wilmington Lions Club.
He is survived by a son, Robert II (Caroline) Tucker of Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Linda (Arthur) Hammerstrom of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Edna (Zack) Perdue of Crewe, Va.; four grandchildren; a nephew, Dr. Zack (Judy) Perdue of Harrisonburg, Va.; and a niece, Nancy (Shirley) Carter of Charles City, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Tucker, Rufus Tucker and William Tucker; and three sisters, Estha Scoggin, Katherine Jones and Louise Gatling.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at REYNNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, the Rev. Laureen Roe officiating, with burial in New Vienna I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 120 Columbus St., Wilmington, 45177.
