Age: 73

Roy Ellsworth Whitaker, 73, of Pleasant Plain, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) in Pleasant Plain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Kite Whitaker.

Mr. Ellsworth was born Aug. 24, 1929, son of Paul Arthur and Mildred Eva Books Whitaker.

He is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Arnell (Bobby) Lanham; a grandchild, Leesha Arnell Miracle; and a sister, Eleanor Landis of Blanchester.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a child, Rickie Lee Whitaker; a sister, Marian Bruner; and three brothers, Edgar, Howard and Charles Whitaker.

Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the TUFTS SCHILDMEYER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1668 SR 28, Goshen, Pastor Bobby Taylor officiating, with burial in Graceland Memorial Garden, Milford. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Roy Ellsworth

Age: 73

Roy Ellsworth, 73, of Pleasant Plain, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) in Pleasant Plain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Kite Whitaker.

Mr. Ellsworth was born Aug. 24, 1929, son of Paul Arthur and Mildred Eva Books Whitaker.

Vivian Bryan
Died: Friday, June 13, 2003
Age: 66

Vivian Bryan, 66, of 2144 County Road, 49, Malvern, Ala., formerly of Circleville, Ohio, died Friday (June 13, 2003) at UAB after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Bryan, who died in 1993.

Mrs. Bryan was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Geneva County, near Malvern, Ala., daughter of the late Jesse Pounce and Ouida Swann White. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. She enjoyed caring for the elderly in their homes, in hospitals and in nursing homes.

She is survived by three daughters, Connie (Pete) Noble of Stoutsville, Gina and Tommy Guill of Titusville, Fla., and Beth and Chris Harvey of Dothan, Ala.; two sons, Richard (Denise) Bryan of Wilmington and James Bryan of Cottonwood; a longtime companion, Jerry Parrish of Headland, Ala.; two sisters, Martha Martin of Dothan, Ala., and Mary (Charles) Woods of Malvern, Ala.; a brother, Harold (Sylvia) White of Melbourne, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a special friend and caretaker, Mark Starkey of Cottonwood, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Darcey Jones Bryan, who died in 1993.

Memorial services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Monday at SORRELLS FUNERAL HOME, 1315 W. Lawrence Harris Highway, Slocomb, Ala., the Rev. John W. Hicks and the Rev. Wallace Russell officiating. Visitation was scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wiregrass Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, Ala. 36302 or to the American Cancer Society, 2246 Montgomery Highway, Dothan, Ala. 36303. The family expresses their thanks to her family and friends who helped so much during her sickness.

Bert Clarence Constant
Died: Friday, June 13, 2003
Age: 70

Bert Clarence Constant, 70, of Wilmington, died Friday (June 13, 2003) at the Pine Crest Nursing Center in Morrow. His former wife, Mary Constant of Wilmington, survives.

Mr. Constant was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Wilmington, son of the late Bertsel D. and Hazel Sanderson Constant. He was a veteran of the U.S. military, having served during the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his former wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Rosalie (Roger) Thompson of Wilmington and Maralyn Sue (Bob) Jenkins of Chillicothe; four sons, Johnny Lee (Tonia) Constant of Wilmington, Steve Allen (Shauna) Constant of Wilmington, Clarence Bert Constant Jr. of Chillicothe and Mark Andrew (Angie) Constant of Wilmington; and 14 grandchildren, Ronald Dean Cooper Jr., Erica Dawn Thompson, Angie Lynn Jenkins, Brittany Lynn Constant, Bradley Andrew Constant, Robert Agustas Jenkins III, Sarah Lynn Constant, Stacy Marie Constant, Jonathan David Constant, Steven William Constant, Benjamin Lee Constant, Brenda Colleen Constant, Zachary Taylor Constant and Cameron Spencer Constant.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Idella Mae Wysong.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, Pastor Kelly D. McInerney officiating, with burial in the Clinton County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Bertha W. Bailey
Died: Thursday, September 18, 2003
Age: 94

Bertha W. Bailey, 94, of Wilmington, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon “Pete” Bailey, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Bailey was born June 21, 1909, in Ross County, daughter of the late Posey and Isabell Woodward Wayland. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 357 in Wilmington, a past matron of the Harveysburg chapter, member of the Glenwood Garden Club and former volunteer at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by a son, Charles R. (Carol) Bailey of Wilmington; a daughter, Norma J. Harner of London, Ky.; a sister, Ellen Bashore of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Lisa (Lenny) Adelman, Susan (Gary) Sparks, Kathy (Bruce) Harvell, Melody (Toby) Sutter and Charity (Robert) Secord; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Milton and James Wayland; a twin sister, Bernice Wayland; a sister, Alice Wayland; and a granddaughter, Bonnie Bailey Joyce.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, Pastor Steve Collett officiating, with burial in Miami Cemetery, Corwin. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Immanuel Baptist Church or to Hospice of Clinton County.

The Rev. Hanley Ozell Pinson
Died: Thursday, September 18, 2003
Age: 81

The Rev. Hanley Ozell Pinson, 81, of Blanchester, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Arbors of Milford in Milford. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Cyrus Pinson of Blanchester. They were married for 58 years.

The Rev. Pinson was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Sciotoville, son of the late the Rev. U.S. Pinson and Ethel Artrip. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater with the Marines. He attended Marshall University, Southwestern Baptist Theology Seminary and graduated with a master’s of divinity degree from Bible Baptist Seminary. He pastored churches in Ohio, Kentucky and Texas. He was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church and DAV Valley Chapter 109 in Cincinnati.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Carol (Tom) McGinnis of Ft. Mill, S.C., Stephen Pinson of Cincinnati and John Mark Pinson of Morrow; a sister, Helen Jo Wetherbee of Erlanger, Ky.; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Woodville Baptist Church, 10970 Woodville Road, Blanchester, Brother Bill Webb officiating, with interment in Graceland Memorial Garden in Milford. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at TUFTS SCHILDMEYER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Main St., Blanchester. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodville Baptist Church, 10970 Woodville Road, Blanchester, 45107.

Hanna Marie Breckel
Died: Thursday, September 18, 2003

Hanna Marie Breckel died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 18, 2003, at Clinton Memorial Hospital, daughter of Christopher A. and Casey Bain Breckel of Sabina.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Teresa and Roger Bain of Sabina, Ken and Lydia Breckel of Lynchburg and Jack Slayton and Pamela Breckel of Columbus; and her great-grandparents, Sam and Marie Clouse of West Chester, Charles and Gerri Breckel of Wilmington and Betty and Arthur Pauley of Sabina.

Arrangements for a graveside service on Saturday are pending at LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina.

Ellen VanMatre McReynolds Smith Thompson
Died: Wednesday, September 17, 2003
Age: 96

Ellen VanMatre McReynolds Smith Thompson, 96, of Wilmington, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at her farm home. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Thompson, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Thompson was born Feb. 4, 1907, in Harveysburg, daughter of Edwin Charles Smith and Marjorie McReynolds. She taught school in Reesville and Martinsville. She was a founder of the Sharon Mother’s Club in Kingman. She graduated from Kingman High School and graduated in 1929 from Wilmington College. She was a member of Alpha Phi Kappa social sorority. She had a keen interest in history and was a descendent of settlers of the Northwest Territory. She was a paternal descendant of pioneer Methodist minister and circuit rider the Rev. James Trabue Smith of Manakintown, Powhatan County, Va., who founded in 1797 Hamilton County, Newtown and settled Waynesville. Her grandfather was John Quincy Smith of Wilmington, who was a U.S. congressman, commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and consul general to Montreal. She was a maternal descendant of Cincinnati’s VanMatre family and granddaughter of Cincinnati physician Dr. William Henry McReynolds. James George Smith of Wilmington, her great-uncle, founded in 1840 Beta Theta Pi, a men’s social fraternity at Miami University. Her husband was son of an Irish immigrant and he owned the farm on which she lived, which had been in the family for over a century.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Guerin Thompson Barns of Anderson Township, Cincinnati; two sons, William Patrick (Penelope Mott) Thompson and Richard (Pamela Patton) Thompson of Wilmington; grandchildren, Elizabeth Brunson, Charles and Stephen Barns, Hillary and Megan Thompson, Robert (Dr. Jill) Thompson, William (Kimberly) Thompson and Marianne (Troy) Diels; eight great-grandchildren; two cousins, Bruce Smith and Judy Smith Miller of West Chester; a niece, Carolyn Sue Smith Motes of McLean, Va.; and a nephew, Steven Smith of Oolteway, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald M. and Horace W. Smith.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chester Township Fire Department, Clinton County Historical Society or Clinton Memorial Hospital Foundation.
