Died: Friday, August 29, 2003
Age: 56
Patty A. Klopfer, 56, of Dover, died unexpectedly Friday evening (Aug. 29, 2003) at Akron General Medical Center. She is survived by her husband, William H. “Bill” Klopfer. They were married Dec. 21, 1969, and were married for 33 years.
Mrs. Klopfer was born Jan. 14, 1947, in Long Beach, Calif., daughter of Rosalind J. Smith Shelley and the late Paul Edward Shelley. When she was 6 weeks old, her family moved to Ohio. In 1965, she graduated with the last graduating class of Sabina High School before it consolidated into the East Clinton School District. She attended Wilmington College and received a master’s degree from Miami University in Oxford. While attending Wilmington College, she met and fell in love with her husband. The couple moved to the area in 1974, and she began teaching physical education at New Philadelphia schools, but her real love and calling was to be a mother. She was very involved in the lives of her two sons and could be spotted at nearly every extracurricular activity in which they participated. Usually she was equipped with “the Pattycam,” a video or still camera she used to to take pictures of their activities. Later, she shared the memories with teammates, coaches and friends. Her enjoyment of young people caused her caregiving to extend to those outside her immediate family circle. She served as a volunteer at Dover’s South School when her children attended there and tutored students who struggled academically. She gave special attention to those who needed encouragement. She also was involved in the school’s parent/teacher group and taught Sunday School and vacation Bible school at First Christian Church, where she was a member. Early in her career, she was a cheerleading advisor at New Philadelphia High School, and from 1993 to 1995, she held the same position at Dover High School.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her two sons, William Hart Jr. (Mara) Klopfer of New Albany and Brian Joseph (Jenn Hitchock) Klopfer of Dover; two sisters, Penny Hawk and Pam Shepherd, both of Strasburg; three brothers, Paul (Carol) Shelley and Preston (Debby) Shelley, both of Columbus, and Palmer Shelley of Manchester, Conn.; her mother-in-law, Nancy Klopfer of Dover; two brothers-in-law, Robert V. (Jane) Klopfer of Dover and Michael (Laurie) Klopfer of Bellbrook; three nieces, Kari Ann (Erich) Bichsel and Kelly Jane Klopfer of Dover and Elizabeth Laurie Klopfer of Loveland; five nephews, Jared Shepherd of Strasburg, Doug Hawk Sherman of Oaks, Calif., Brian Shelley of Vernon, Conn., Kyle Ryan (Jennifer) Klopfer of Mill Valley, Calif., and David Michael Klopfer of Centerville; and two great-nephews, Curtis Ryan Klopfer and Luke Kyle Klopfer, both of Mill Valley, Calif.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Virlen L. Klopfer, who died Aug. 31, 2002.
In keeping with her wishes, funeral services will be private, with cremation conducted through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory and burial in Dover Burial Park. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the LINN-HERT-GEIB FUNERAL HOME, New Philadelphia. It was easy to spot that she was a joyful giver, and in that spirit, memorial contributions may be made to the Dover City Schools Education Foundation, P.O. Box 190, Dover, 44622, or to the Building for Life Fund or Benevolence Fund at the First Christian Church, 104 Third Street NW, New Philadelphia, 44663.
