Dr. Nathan Scowden Hale
Died: Wednesday, October 30, 2002
Age: 85
Dr. Nathan Scowden Hale, 85, of Wilmington, died 3 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 30, 2002) at his home. He is survived by his wife, Margery.
Dr. Hale was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Wilmington, the second son of Dr. William Kelley Hale, a general surgeon, and Dessa Raydure Hale, a registered nurse anesthetist. His parents founded Wilmington's first hospital in 1914 on the northeast corner of West Locust and Spring streets, and in 1923, they founded Hale Hospital on West Main Street, which was the area's first "modern" hospital. Dr. Hale began his Wilmington practice in 1951 and served with Dr. Foster J. Boyd as the area's only general surgeons until 1970, when Dr. Ruth Hayes arrived. He retired from surgery in 1993 after 50 years in medical practice.
He was a life-long student of the natural sciences and shared his curiosity and knowledge freely. For years he was devoted to the design, planting and maintenance of the Hale Arboretum, which was started by his father on the Hale Hospital grounds, which was recently acquired by Clinton Memorial Hospital for current expansion. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Hazard Arboretum at Wilmington College. For the past 12 years, Hale worked closely with Fredrik Anliot, professor of biology at Wilmington College, to find and measure the largest trees of each species in the county for a soon to be published catalogue. Working with Anliot, he provided ongoing watchdog service and documentation of pollution-caused fish kills in Lytle Creek. During his lifetime, he cultivated and planted thousands of trees, and many can be found today growing in all corners of Wilmington and residences throughout Clinton County. He also was an avid hunter and fisherman.
During his later years, Dr. Hale was presented with several honors, including a Certificate of Distinction for 50 Years of Medicine from The Ohio State Medical Association, Leadership Clinton Organizational Leader of the Year, community service awards from the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Clinton County Environmental Protection Association and having the Nathan S. Hale Walking/Hiking Trail in the J.W. Denver Williams Jr. Memorial Park dedicated to him. In 2000, he was conferred an honorary doctor of science degree from Wilmington College. Most recently, he was honored with the dedication of the Nathan Hale Covered Bridge by the Clinton County Rails to Trails.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Philip B., Frank A. and Jonathan K. Hale; three daughters-in-law, Yamile Soto, Cindy Mercer and Teresa Roberts Hale; two granddaughters, Dessa C. and Allison M. Hale; two sisters-in-law, Norma Hale and Beverly Sharp; two nephews, Layton C. and Alan B. Hale; and a great-nephew, Myron K. Hale.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Philip R. and Myron T. Hale.
Funeral services will be held privately by the family. A memorial service open to the public will be held at a later time. The family sincerely thanks everyone who has appreciated and loved Dr. Hale over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to one of Dr. Hale's community interests and concerns.
