Dr. Carl F. Hilberg
Died: Saturday, October 18, 2003
Age: 73
Dr. Carl F. Hilberg, 72, of 12 Prairie Creek Crossing, Wilmington, died Saturday (Oct. 18, 2003) at Cape May Retirement Village. He is survived by his wife, Mary Katheryn Drake Hilberg. They were married June 17, 1956.
Dr. Hilberg was born Sept. 2, 1931, in Fairport Harbor, son of the late Everett Francis Hilberg and Lila Pohto Hilberg Enters. He graduated from Harding High School in Fairport Harbor in 1949, attended Kent State University and graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1956. Dr. Hilberg served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas; Seattle, Wash.; and Anchorage, Alaska. He opened his dental practice in Wilmington in 1958 and retired in 1993.
Dr. Hilberg was a past exalted ruler of BPOE 797, former member of the Wilmington Rotary Club, OSU Alumni Association and officer of the WHS Scholastic Achievement Council. He was an avid golfer and served a term as president of the Snow Hill Country Club Board of Directors. He also was a faithful follower of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. Dr. Hilberg was a member of the Wilmington Friends Meeting.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Craig Hilberg of Columbus; two daughters, Maribeth (Tom) Storer of Sabina and Susan (Drew) Schilling of Crescent Springs, Ky.; four grandchildren, Christopher Storer, Sara Storer, Andrea Schilling and Aaron Schilling; a brother, Donald (Betty Ann) Hilberg of Battleground, Wash.; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Matt and Lynn Drake of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Corwin and Kay Drake of Caldwell, N.J.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Hilberg was preceded in death by three brothers, Allen Hilberg, Jack Hilberg and Gary Enters.

Mary Ellen Gano
Died: Friday, October 17, 2003
Age: 91
Mary Ellen Gano, 91, a longtime Clinton County and Wilmington resident, died Friday (Oct. 17, 2003) at Bortz Health Care in Petoskey, Mich. Her husband, John L. Gano, a longtime Clinton County educator, died Oct. 25, 1978. They were married June 17, 1936.
Mrs. Gano was born Nov. 30, 1911, daughter of Charles H. and Pearl Rhoades Willett. After graduating from Wilmington High School, she attended Wilmington College. She taught elementary school for many years in the Martinsville and Wilmington school systems. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wilmington, Clinton County Retired Teachers, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers, Yani Club and Progressive Mothers Club. She performed many years of community service as a volunteer at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by two sons, Jim (Pam) Gano of Troy, Mich. and Charlie (Fran) Gano of Petoskey, Mich.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington. The family will receive visitors from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Corene Chamberlin
Died: Friday, October 17, 2003
Age: 83
Corene Chamberlin, 83, of Blanchester, died Friday (Oct. 17, 2003) at Clinton Memorial Hospital. Her husband, William E. Chamberlin, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Chamberlin was born Nov. 29, 1919, in Crittenden, Ky., daughter of the late Nelson Osborne and Hallie Cammick. She was a heritage member of the First Baptist Church in Blanchester.
Mrs. Chamberlin is survived by three children, Edward Chamberlin of Loveland, Coletta (Donald) Hughes of Dayton and Dale Chamberlin of Pleasant Plain; two brothers, Harvey Osborne and Elmo Osborne; a sister, Ruth Custer; two grandchildren, Lisa Holt and Christopher Hughes; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Chamberlin was preceded in death by two sisters, and two grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home, 120 W. Main St., Blanchester, the Rev. Chad Conner
Died: Thursday, October 16, 2003
Age: 33
Chad Conner, 33, of Wilmington, died 7:50 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 16, 2003) at the Clinton Memorial Hospital emergency room, from injuries sustained in an automobile crash. His wife, Lori Conner, survives.
Mr. Conner was born March 26, 1970, in Kettering. He was a 1988 graduate of Wilmington High School. Mr. Conner was a car salesman at West End Auto Sales in Wilmington. He was a member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father, Jim Conner; his mother and stepfather, Dina and Kirby Tolliver; a sister, Christie Conner; two stepsisters, Andrea Tolliver and Whitney Tolliver; grandparents, Emma Conner and special friend Bob Roosa, Josephine Babb and special friend William Hilterbran; a great-aunt, Katherine Griffith; several aunts, uncles and cousins; many special friends and beloved pets, including his best friend, Storm.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bob Conner and Seibert Babb and a stepgrandfather Kit Carson.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, 840 Timber Glen Drive, Dr. G. David Hawley officiating, with interment in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Wanda Joyce Ledford
Died: Thursday, October 16, 2003
Age: 65
Wanda Joyce Ledford, 65, of 820 E. Center St., Blanchester, died 3 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 16, 2003) at Continental Manor Nursing Home, Blanchester. Her husband, Chester Eugene Ledford, died Oct. 30, 1988. They were married June 26, 1961.
Mrs. Ledford was born Sept. 12, 1938, in Phillipsburg, daughter of the late William “Willie” and Annabelle Wilmot Adams. She was a deli clerk for many years at the Rombach Avenue Bob and Carl’s. A 1957 graduate of Jefferson High School, she was active with the Robert E. Hadley District Cub Scout organization and was a member of the Wilmington Church of Christ.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth E. (Rebecca) Ledford of Wilmington; three brothers, William R. “Ricky” (Sharon) Adams of South Carolina, Ronald E. (Pam) Adams of Wilmington and Glen Thomas Adams of California; two sisters, Evelyn (Don) Lorentz of Wilmington and Norma (Paul) Shankland of Wilmington; and four grandchildren, Desiree DeAnn Ivy, Jennifer Lynn Ivy, Davonte Ronnel Ledford and Emily Lauren Ledford.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela S. Ledford; a brother, Cleveland E. Adams; and a grandson, Jeremy James Ivy.

Mildred L. Bunnell
Died: Wednesday, January 22, 2003
Age: 92
Mildred L. Bunnell, 92, of 290 Prairie Ave. Apt. 139, Wilmington, died 1:40 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 22, 2003) at the Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Bunnell, who died in 1982.
Mrs. Bunnell was born Feb. 22, 1910, in Centerville, daughter of the late Clyde and Pearl Long. She taught in public schools for 30 years. After her retirement, she taught in private schools for six years. She also was a substitute teacher for 12 years for the Wilmington City Schools. For 14 years, she escorted group tours throughout the United States and Canada. She served as a volunteer for 12 years at Clinton Memorial Hospital. She was a life member of the Clinton County Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Retired Teachers of Ohio, Progress Club, Hospital Auxiliary Twig 16, Elks Auxiliary, Turner the Corner, Business and Profes-sional Club and American Association University Women of Wilmington. She was a member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Rachel Circle of Life.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Larry (Donna) Bunnell of Brandenton, Fla.; a daughter, Karen (Alan) Noftsger of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Dr. Brent (Melody) Bunnell of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Melissa (Jason) Frye of Orlando, Fla., Jeff (Johnna) Noftsger of Charlotte, N.C., and Marcie (Trey) Chastain of Fayetteville, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Blake Bunnell, Ryan Bunnell, Scott Noftsger and Natalie Noftsger.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland Long and Kermit Long, and a sister, Hilda Stewart.

Cecil L. Rhoades
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 82
Cecil L. Rhoades, 82, of Sabina, died Tuesday (Jan. 21, 2003) at Autumn Years Nursing Center. He is survived by his wife, Lillie Brown Rhoades. They were married April 29, 1944.
Mr. Rhoades was born April 1, 1920, in Winchester, son of the late John E. and Bertha Smith Rhoades. He was retired from the Cincinnati Milacron and had formerly worked as a manager of the Wilmington Green Apartments, on a dairy farm in Urbana and at the Melvin Feed Mill. He served for many years as Scoutmaster and assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 63. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was a member of the Sabina Church of Christ, where he was very active in youth ministries and other ministries of the church, including the Appalachian clothing ministry.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Donna (Ed) Stephenson of Reesville and Jeanette (Bob) Soale of Wilmington; a son, James of Sabina; four grandchildren, Deanna Stephenson, Gene (Dionne) Stephenson, Casey Soale and Robin Soale; two great-grandchildren, Patricia Renee and Eric Stephenson; and three sisters, Olive Walker of Hillsboro, Geneva Fae Reeder of Wilmington and Renee Mae Donihue of Cincinnati.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Alan Rhoades; three sisters, Velma Miller, Mary Williamson and Gladys Poe; and a brother, Wayne Rhoades.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sabina Church of Christ, with burial in the Sabina Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Esta C. Polk
Died: Monday, January 20, 2003
Age: 96
Esta C. Polk, 96, of Sabina, died Monday (Jan. 20, 2003) at the Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence, Wilmington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sampson T. Polk, who died in 1996.
Mrs. Polk was born Dec. 4, 1906, in Peebles, daughter of Emerson and Pearl Fleming Storer. She lived most of her life in the Sabina area and was one of its oldest citizens. She was a member of the Sabina Church of Christ and a past worthy matron of the Sabina Order of the Eastern Star. She was active for many years in the Clinton County Republican Club.
She is survived by a sister, Wynona (George) Sakala of La Verne, Calif.; a daughter, Vivian (Carl) Probasco of Wilmington; two sons, Wayne E. Polk of Wilmington and James D. (Ann) Polk of Washington Court House; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Leland; a sister, Edith; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family on Thursday at the LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina, with burial in the Sabina Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
