Helen Robinson Oberschlake
Died: Sunday, January 12, 2003
Age: 86

Helen Robinson Oberschlake, 86, of Middletown, formerly of Washington Court House, died Sunday (Jan. 12, 2003) at the Willow Knoll Retirement Center. Her husband, Hermus F. Oberschlake, died March 19, 1996. They were married Feb. 1, 1940.

Mrs. Oberschlake was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Fayette County, daughter of John and Elsie Campbell Robinson. She retired from Clinton

Memorial Hospital, where she had been employed for 18 years as an accountant. She was a member of the Bloomingburg United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Larry (Cathryn) Oberschlake of Middletown; a daughter, Frances (Jim) Croker of Grove City; seven grandchildren, Martin and Jonathan Oberschlake, Mindy O. Hawkins, and Kevin, Kirk, Kent and Kyle Hickman; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; a sister, Jean Anderson of Huntington, W. Va.; and two brothers, Lewis and Joe Robinson, both of Huntington, W. Va.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Dennison.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Bloomingburg Cemetery, the Rev. Ray McFarland officiating. In keeping with Mrs. Oberschlake's request, there will be no visitation. Final arrangements have been entrusted to the MORROW FUNERAL HOME, Washington Court House. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomingburg United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 123, Bloomingburg 43106.

Alpha Marie Miars
Died: Saturday, January 11, 2003
Age: 98

Alpha Marie Miars, 98, of Jamestown, formerly of Blanchester, died 12:50 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at Liberty Nursing Center, Jamestown. Her husband, Oliver B. Miars, died March 30, 1943. They were married March 24, 1924.

Mrs. Miars was born Nov. 17, 1904, in Reesville, daughter of Oscar and Nicie Pennington Puckett. She was a farm wife and enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She also was a licensed practical nurse at the Hale Hospital in Wilmington.

She is survived by a son, Raymond Miars of Spring Valley; a sister, Ruth Ellen Davis of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Harvey Miars of Xenia, Glenn (Jeanne) Miars of Waynesville and Mary Beth (Harley) McCullough of Blanchester; seven great-grandchildren, Kelly Miars, Leslie Miars, Heather Rhodes, Mary Ann Miars, Lisa Cook, Claire McCullough and Caleb McCullough; four great-grandchildren, Kirsten Cook, Emily Cook, Brent Miars and Randy Rhodes; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Bell Bernard; a son-in-law, Richard D. Bernard; a daughter-in-law, June Miars; two brothers, Clarence and Francis; and two sisters, Margaret and Mary.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, with burial in Springfield Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

William "Bill" Fife
Died: Saturday, January 11, 2003
Age: 82

William "Bill" Fife, 82, of Wilmington, passed away 5:25 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington. He had been courageously battling illness over the last few years of his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Sara Olive Gray Fife. They were married Feb. 25, 1950, enjoying a wonderful life together.

Mr. Fife was born May 8, 1920, in Clinton County, son of the late Matthew B. Fife and Bertha Sliker Fife and was raised on the family farm. Bill's mother Bertha Sliker Fife died when he was 11 years old at which time he, brother Robert Fife and sister Mabel Bowers Fife were raised by Matthew B. Fife and stepmother Caroline Fife. Caroline nurtured, cared for and raised the three as her own. Bill was a lifelong resident of Clinton County, serving the community in many capacities. He was a 1939 graduate of Wilmington High School, and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he studied agriculture.

Mr. Fife was a World War II veteran, and was a technical sergeant in the 52nd Battalion Signal Corps. He served in the armed forces in various locations including Japan and Korea. He was a lifelong farmer. Bill was a Union Township trustee from 1957-1965; a Clinton County commissioner from 1965-1968; and the Clinton County auditor from 1968-1987.

Bill was a charter member of Wilmington Elks 797 and also of Wilmington I.O.O.F. Odd Fellows. He belonged to American Legion Post 49 where he participated in the American Legion Memorial Squad. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 6710 where he received a lifetime membership award, served as post commander in 1963-64, and served as VFW trustee from 1964-67.

Bill served as a Clinton County Republican Central and Executive Committee board member, a member of the Clinton County Board of Elections, and a board member for the People's Building and Loan in Blanchester. He was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church -- Disciples of Christ, where he was a former deacon.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fife is survived by two sons, David William Fife of Wilmington, and James Gray Fife of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Caroline Elaine Fife, Elizabeth Marie Fife, Anthony James Fife, Heather Dawn Fife and David Matthew Fife; a niece, Carma Jean Stein; and a nephew, Alfred Matthew Fife.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fife was preceded in death by his stepmother, Caroline Fife; his brother, Robert Fife; and his sister, Mabel Fife Bowers.

The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church -- Disciples of Christ, 120 Columbus St. in Wilmington, the Rev. Donald K. Mertz officiating, with interment in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 49 Memorial Squad. Friends may call at the church from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation, the American Cancer Society or First Christian Church Organ

Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.

Bill Fife was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and he shall be greatly missed.

Emma Swingley
Died: Friday, January 10, 2003
Age: 93

Emma Swingley, 93, of Hillsboro, formerly of Leesburg, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at Heartland of Hillsboro.

She was born Dec. 11, 1909, in New Vienna, daughter of the late Henry and Gertrude DeLong Swingley. She was a retired farmer

and was a member of

the New Vienna Church of Christ.

She is survived by a brother, Robert Swingley of Lynchburg; two sisters, Louise Purcell of Wilmington and Edith Guthrie of Pricetown; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Weibley and Grace Stinecker; and six brothers, Mike, Stanley, Dell, Paul, Henry Lee and Bill Swingley.

Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Clinton Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina.

William "Bill" T. Wollard
Died: Monday, February 17, 2003
Age: 77

William T. "Bill" Woolard, 77, of Hillsboro, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2003) at the Highland District Hospital, Hillsboro.

Mr. Woolard was born March 13, 1925, in Leesburg, son of Pearl Rowe Woolard Wise of Hillsboro and the late Ralph Woolard. He was a police officer for the city of Hillsboro, serving as chief of police for over 25 years. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio State Sheriff and Police Officers associations, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1161, Bainbridge American Legion Post 14, the Highland Lodge 38 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati and a life member of the AmVets Post 61 and the V.F.W. Post 9094.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Darlene (Tom) Coleman of Wilmington; a son, Thomas Edward "Ed" (Teresa VanHoose) Woolard of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two stepsons, James E. "Jim" (Dawn) Ryan of Naples, Fla., and Jerald Lee "Jerry" Ryan of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Ann Pitzer of Hillsboro and Betty Jane (Bob) Tommasino of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Robert (Etta) Woolard of Augusta, Ga.; a half sister, Georgeanna (Robert) Saunders of Miamisburg; two half brothers, Charles (Lee Ann) Wise of Bainbridge and Earl "Butch" Wise of Hillsboro; six grandchildren, Robin (John) Cloud, Brian Coleman, Tracy and Mark Rupp and Rachel and Sarah Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Brayden Cloud.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the TURNER & SON FUNERAL HOME, 602 N. High St., Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Masonic services and Scottish Rite Ring services will be held 7:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lawrence Lee "Lark" Collins
Died: Monday, February 17, 2003
Age: 61

Lawrence Lee "Lark" Collins, 61, of Hillsboro, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2003) at the Crestwood Nursing Center.

Mr. Collins was born Sept. 18, 1941, in Hillsboro, son of the late Wendell C. and Martha Kirk Collins.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the TURNER & SON FUNERAL HOME, 602 N. High St., Hillsboro, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Prayer services will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Highland County, 61 E. Main St., Wilmington, 45177.

Earl Leroy Story
Died: Monday, February 17, 2003
Age: 83

Earl Leroy Story, 83, of Wilmington, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2003) at the Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington.

Mr. Story was born April 23, 1919, in Bowersville, son of the late Harry D. and Ilo Conrey Story. He had been employed for 63 years at Irwin Auger Bit. He was a member and past post commander of the Wilmington American Legion Post 49. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.

He is survived by two sons, Robert L. Story Sr. of Wilmington and David L. (Theresa) Story of Virginia; four grandchildren, Robert L. Story Jr. of Wilmington, Aaron L. Story of Wilmington, Summer Leann Story of Virginia and Sarah Story of Virginia; a dear friend, Diana Valentine of Wilmington; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Nunn of Miamisburg; and a niece, Sandy Quigley of Wilmington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Story Nunn.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, Bob Baker officiating, with burial in the Bowersville Cemetery, where the Wilmington American Legion memorial squad will accord full military honors. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
