Charles E. Lawson, 43, of Blanchester, died Tuesday (July 9, 2002) at Bethesda North Hospital, Montgomery.
Mr. Lawson was born April 26, 1959, in Cincinnati, son of Bobbie Siler Lawson of Blanchester and the late Willard Lawson.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his former spouses, Deborah Mize and Kathleen Lawson; three children, Daniel Lawson and Kristine Lawson, both of Batavia, and Kenneth Charles Lawson of Morrow; two stepchildren, Desirae Miracle and Brandon Hensley; a grandchild; Emily Garner; a brother, Willard Jr. (Debra) Lawson; five sisters, Linda (Jimmy) Setters, Darlene (James) Fawley, Barbara (Tom) Reed, Teresa (Randy) Collins and Jean Lovitt; special friends, Jim and Renae Bedinghaus and Tom Muller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at TUFTS SCHILDMEYER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Main St., Blanchester, 45107, Bud Cluff officiating, with burial in Graceland Memorial Gardens, Milford. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Donald Jacob Gard
Died: Monday, July 8, 2002
Age: 74
Donald Jacob Gard, 74, died July 8, 2002 in Englewood, Colo., from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. He was survived for only 11 days by his wife, Margie A. Chaney, who died July 19, 2002, in Lakewood, Colo. He married his wife -- his one love -- on May 27, 1950.
Mr. Gard was born March 8, 1928, in Urbana, the fourth of five children to Charles and Mable Kreglow Gard. He graduated in 1950 from Wittenberg University and served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954, where he was awarded a medal for sharp shooting. He worked in the insurance industry as an insurance adjuster and manager for several different companies. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge of Masons, Anthony Lodge, in Springfield for over 50 years. He and his wife resided in several different places during their lives, including Tremont City, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; Greenville, Ohio; Paxton, Ill.; Wilmington; Springfield; and lastly in Littleton, Colo., with their daughter.
He is survived by a daughter, Rhea Gard (Jason) Witters of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Emily, Megan and Zach Witters of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Ruthann Gentis of Urbana and Mary Lou Gard of Urbana; two brothers, Dr. Charles (Phyllis) Gard of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Russell (Margaret) Gard of Urbana; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were held July 12 at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Julia Temple Center for Alzheimer's and Dementia Care, 3401 South Lafayette, Englewood, Colo. 80110.
Frances Elizabeth Shumard
Died: Monday, July 8, 2002
Age: 93
Frances Elizabeth Shumard, 93, of Blanchester, died Monday (July 8, 2002) at Continental Manor, Blanchester. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Shumard, who died in 1979.
Mrs. Shumard was born Dec. 20, 1908, in Falmouth, Ky., daughter of the late Edward Sargent and Lennie Sharp. She was a member of Milford Heights Church of Christ.
She is survived by three children, Wanda (Raymond) Vance of Blanchester, Robert (Barbara) Shumard of Blanchester and Ken (Joyce) Shumard of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a sister, Addie Slough of Springfield.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at TUFTS SCHILDMEYER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Main St., Blanchester, Dwight Hesson officiating, with burial in Blanchester I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Blanchester. Frank Dunn
Died: Sunday, July 7, 2002
Age: 102
Frank Dunn, 102, of Washington Court House, died Sunday (July 7, 2002) at Carlton Manor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Bargdill, who died in 1986. They were married Dec. 29, 1926.
Mr. Dunn was born Aug. 17, 1899, in Brown County, son of the late John Jr. and Leah Noble Lewis Dunn. He was a retired minister and farmer. He was a charter member of the Walnut Hills Church of Christ in Christian Union. He attended Leesburg High School and God's Bible School in Cincinnati.
He is survived by three sons, Dale (Tillie) Dunn of Washington Court House, Herbert (Lois) Dunn of Columbus and Delbert (Betty) Dunn of Kentwood, Mich.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Palmer of Washington Court House and Gladys Elofson of Woolaston, Mass.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Delberta; and two brothers, John and James Dunn.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage Memorial Church, 1867 US 35 Northwest, Washington Court House, with burial in Hillsboro Cemetery, Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Lloyd B. Vanzant

Age: 79
Lloyd B. Vanzant, 79, of Hillsboro, died Sunday (July 7, 2002) at Highland District Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deloris Eileen Vanzant.
Mr. Vanzant was born July 10, 1922, in Hillsboro, son of the late Everett G. and Sylvia Inlow Vanzant. He had been a member of the board of directors of the Highland County Landmark. He was a member and elder of Mt. Olive Church of Christ and a member of Highland County Senior Citizens.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas A. (Jean) Vanzant of Lynchburg and Robert L. (Jimmie) Vanzant of Wilmington; a daughter, Janet (John) Corbin of Huber Heights; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Vanzant of New Vienna and Bernice Landwehr of Cape Coral, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kyle Corbin and Dustin Corbin, both of Huber Heights, Jenny (Gary) Troutman of Sardinia, Shelly (Eric) Taylor of Hillsboro and Joshua and Justin Vanzant, both of Wilmington; four great-grandchildren, Abby, Caleb, Nathan and Hannah.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph L. Vanzant.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Olive Church of Christ, Sidney Clay officiating, with burial in Hillsboro Cemetery. Patricia Ann Balon

Age: 57
Patricia Ann Balon, 57, of Fayetteville, died Thursday (July 4, 2002). She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Balon Sr.
Mrs. Balon was born June 10, 1945, in Fayetteville. She was employed by American Tool Company.
She is survived by a stepson, James B. Jr. (Sandra) Balon of Fayetteville; a half sister, Hilda Thomas of Waverly; three brothers, Joe (Sheila) Carlier of Wilmington, Charles (Bonnie) Carlier of Goshen and Thomas (Leticia) Carlier of Fayetteville; a sister, Susan (Dusty) Combs of Fayetteville; a stepgrandchild, Abigail Balon of Fayetteville; and two aunts, Lucille Snider of Fayetteville and Minnie Dorothy Bryant of Waverly.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Wesley Carlier.

Raymond Gene Kellum
Died: Thursday, July 4, 2002
Age: 66
Raymond Gene Kellum, 66, of 1204 Rawlings St., Washington Court House, died 10:29 a.m. Thursday (July 4, 2002) shortly after arrival at Fayette County Memorial Hospital, Washington Court House.
Mr. Kellum was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Danville, Highland County, son of William Pile and Louanna Marie Creek Kellum. He moved to Washington Court House in 1984. He had been a corrections officer at Warren Correctional Institute for 6 1/2 years before he retired in June 2000. He previously had worked for the Rite Aid Drug Corporation as a supervisor and store installer and he had been a self-employed service station owner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Paul H. Hughey Post 25 of the American Legion, the O.E. Hardway Post 3762 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wilmington Lodge F&AM 52, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cincinnati and the Fayette Aerie 423 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Kent (fiancee Kay Howell) Kellum of Wilmington and Dion Eric Kellum of Mason; three grandchildren; a brother, John William (Mary) Kellum of Wilmington; a sister, Mary Lou (Wayne) Arnold of Washington Court House; and his stepfather, Clarence Justus of Washington Court House.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Harner Township Cemetery, Danville, Highland County, the Rev. Joe Duvall, pastor of Heritage Memorial Church of Christ in Christian Union, officiating. In accordance with Mr. Kellum's wishes, his body will be cremated. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of KIRKPATRICK FUNERAL HOME, Washington Court House.
Alsin B. Cassner
Died: Friday, October 11, 2002
Age: 88
Alvin B. Cassner, 88, of Naples, Fla., died Friday (Oct. 11, 2002) in Florida. His wife, Alice E. Cassner, died Nov. 2, 2000.
Mr. Cassner was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late John and Ida LaVictor Cassner. He was the founder and president of Rotary Forms Press, Inc. in Hillsboro; Unit Sets, Inc. in Wilmington; Computer Stock Forms, Inc. in Greenfield; and Quality Computer Forms in Naples, Fla. He started Rotary Forms Press, Inc. in 1952 and relocated the business to Hillsboro in 1957. He was Business Forms Professional of the Year in 1985. A member of the Hillsboro First Presbyterian Church and Snow Hill Country Club, he was active in the community with donations from the Cassner Foundation to the athletic building at Hillsboro and McClain high schools, contributions to the Highland County Society for Children and Adults, donations to the local police and fire departments, and five yearly $2,000 scholarships for Highland County high school seniors. Both Alvin B. and Alice Cassner were proud to call Hillsboro home, and they were dedicated to giving back to the community and helping the youth of Highland County.
He is survived by two sons, Jon Cassner of Hillsboro and Carl Cassner of Hillsboro; five grandchildren, Cathy Cassner of Hillsboro, Janette (Mike) Emery of Gilbert, Ariz., Curtis (Peggy) Cassner of Naples, Fla., Brian (Lori) Cassner of Hillsboro, and Eric Cassner of Lynchburg; and seven great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Justin, Bruce, Kelley, Abby, Aaron and William; and a sister, Cecilia Angerelli of Milford, Mich.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sons, Alvin, Eric and Glen Cassner.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Hillsboro First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Maurice G. Mitchell officiating, with burial in the Hillsboro Cemetery. A reception will be held following the service Tuesday in the Montgomery Room at the Hillsboro First Presbyterian Church, where the family will receive friends. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the HOPE MILLER-THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME, 241 E. Main St., Hillsboro.
