Lizzie Mae Hook
Died: Saturday, October 5, 2002
Age: 95
Lizzie Mae Hook, 95, of 1801 Riverside Drive, Columbus, formerly of 738 N. Walnut St., Wilmington, died 1:30 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 5, 2002) at First Community Village, Columbus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry G. Hook. They were married May 11, 1929.
Mrs. Hook was born April 1, 1907, in Brown County, daughter of the late Edward and Vada Womacks Sturm. She retired as a cook from Clinton Memorial Hospital. Prior to working at the hospital, she was a cook with the Wilmington City Schools and Wilmington College. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wilmington. She was a member of the Russellville Chapter of Order of Easter Star since 1930 and of the ladies auxiliary of the Ohio Rural Letter Carriers.
She is survived by a son, Roy Hook of Powell; a brother, Ellis Sturm of Lebanon; and two grandchildren, Sarah Hook and Adam Hook.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Charles Sturm.
A memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 120 Columbus St., Wilmington, the Rev. Donald K. Mertz officiating, with burial in Russellville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Arrangements are under the direction of REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.
Edith Koogler Curtis
Died: Sunday, December 8, 2002
Age: 90
Edith Koogler Curtis, 90, of Wilmington, died Sunday (Dec. 8, 2002) at the Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence. She is survived by her husband, Earl Curtis of Wilmington.
Mrs. Curtis was born Sept. 12, 1912, in Greene County.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Tom (Martha) Curtis of Lancaster and Larry (Jennifer) Curtis of Westerville; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by three sons, Donald Curtis, Franklin Curtis and David "Happy" Curtis; two brothers, Charles Koogler and John Koogler; and a sister, Lucille Terrell.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, the Rev. Noah Robert Dunn officiating, with burial in the Springfield Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Leo Henry Irvin
Died: Saturday, December 7, 2002
Age: 83
Leo Henry Irvin, 83, of Wilmington, died 6:32 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 7, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Irvin was born April 12, 1919, in Burtonville, son of the late Henry and Mary Alice Olvis Irvin. He had retired from D&E Equipment. He was a serviceman, and he also farmed in Clinton and Warren counties. He was a past commander from 1964 to 1965 and a life member of the American Legion Post 49. He also was a member of 40 & 8 Voitune 992 and the VFW 6710. He as a past commander from 1968 to 1969 of American Legion District 4 of Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He graduated from Wilmington High School.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Russell, Walter, William and George Irvin; two sisters, Lucille Irvin Howe and Maggie Irvin; and a cousin raised in the home as a sister, Cleo "Sis" Nordyke.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, the Rev. Donald K. Mertz and Robert Baker officiating, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Frank B. Pinkerton Jr.
Died: Saturday, December 7, 2002
Age: 81
Frank B. Pinkerton Jr., 81, of Hillsboro, died Saturday morning (Dec. 7, 2002) at the Valley View Alzheimer's Care Center in Frankfort, Ohio. His wife, Charlyne F. Browning Pinkerton, preceded him in death on Sept. 24, 1995.
Mr. Pinkerton was born July 18, 1921, in Dayton, son of the late Franklin B. and Opal Serena Cashner Pinkerton. He was the owner of the Intermatic Service Center. A 1939 graduate of the Verona High School in Dayton, Mr. Pinkerton was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a member of the Highland County Board of Elections, the Highland Lodge F & AM 38, and the Hillsboro Elks Lodge 361 where he was past exalted ruler and district deputy grand exalted ruler.
Mr. Pinkerton is survived by four sons, Frank B. Pinkerton III of Sardinia, Gerald K. Pinkerton of Hillsboro, Sam C. (Cindy) Pinkerton of Hillsboro, and Bruce (Sue) Pinkerton of Dayton; a sister, Vivian Ball of Palmdale, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Pinkerton was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Pinkerton; a brother, David Pinkerton; and a sister, Lorean Hall.
The funeral service will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at the TURNER & SON FUNERAL HOME, 602 N. High St. in Hillsboro, with John Dobbins officiating. Committal services will take place 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in West Milton, Ohio. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Hillsboro.
Eileen Taylor
Died: Saturday, December 7, 2002
Age: 67
Eileen Taylor, 67, of Cincinnati, formerly of Wilmington, died 11:27 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 7, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 27, 1935, of Gasville, Ark., daughter of Helsie Crownover Suggs Patrick of Wilmington and the late Arlie Suggs. She was a former manager of Home Federal Savings and Loan in Wilmington. She had been a former officer of that institution, also. She had been a paralegal with the Robert F. Alsfelder law office. She retired from P&C Bank. She graduated from Wilmington High School.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her stepfather, Virgil Patrick of Wilmington; a daughter, Deborah Taylor (Robert F. Jr.) Alsfelder of Cincinnati; a brother, Lyndell (Rae) Suggs of Wilmington; three stepsisters, Suanne Cookman of Florence, Ky., Janie Morris of Clarksville and Bonnie (Rick) Tuff of Virginia; four grandchildren, Robert F. Alsfelder III, James William Alsfelder, George Howard Frazer Alsfelder and Katherine Eileen Alsfelder; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, Keith Dimbath officiating, with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Charles Conger
Died: Thursday, December 5, 2002
Age: 55
Charles Conger, 55, of Morrow, died Dec. 5, 2002, after a long illness of heart disease. He is survived by his beloved wife, Edith Howard Conger. They were married 29 years.
Mr. Conger was born the son of Ruthella Kinney of Blanchester and the late Paul "Whitey" Kinney. He graduated from Little Miami High School. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army
and served in Vietnam,
Italy, Germany and the United States. He retired after
serving 20 years in the Army. He worked for 15 years
at Wilmington College until his health failed and he had to retire. He was a trustee at the Sugar Run Valley Baptist Church. He was a member of the Morrow V.F.W. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping and spending time outdoors.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two brothers, Roger Kinney of Franklin and Stanley Reid of Hunstville, Ala.; an aunt and uncle, Polly and Bob Daugherty of Wilmington; two nieces, Paula Noe and Karen Kinney, both of Franklin; two nephews, Keith Kinney of Franklin and Christopher Howard of Morrow; two great-nephews, Brandon and Christopher; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orbin and Edna Howard of Morrow; and a brother-in-law, Gary (Jennifer) Howard.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee Conger, who was 7 years old when he died in Germany in 1984.
Funeral services were held Saturday at VALE-HOSKINS FUNERAL HOME, Morrow, Pastor M. Earl McGuffey and Pastor William Webb officiated, with burial in Edwardsville Cemetery, where full military honors were accorded. Because Mr. Conger loved his church, memorial contributions may be made to the Sugar Run Valley Baptist Church, 5886 SR 132, Morrow, 45152.
Dale Eileen Linn Reno Sherman
Died: Monday, December 2, 2002
Dale Eileen Linn Reno Sherman died Dec. 2, 2002, following a brief and courageous battle with leukemia. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Edward Sherman.
She was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Waynesville, daughter of the late Ralph W. and Gladys Huff Linn. In 1965, she moved to Houston, Texas. She was an accomplished bowler and tirelessly promoted the game of bowling for many years. She wrote area notes and bowling columns for the Houston Post, Houston Chronicle and various bowling newsletters. She was a member of the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. In 1975 she founded the Houston Queens Tournament and she was a member of the Houston Bowling Hall of Fame. She loved her job and made numerous friends and acquaintances during her 30-year career in U.S. Postal Service uniform sales. She had a great love for animals, especially her dogs, Sugar and Spice.
She is survived by a son, Neil F. Reno; a daughter, Nina Reno Holland; and three grandchildren, Krysta Reno, Ryan Holland and Stefani Holland.
A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at EARTHMAN HUNTERS CREEK CHAPEL, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas. Visitation was held from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Houston SPCA, CAP or to the donor's favorite animal charity.
Charles " Jim " Alfred Pettry
Died: Sunday, December 1, 2002
Age: 78
Charles Alfred "Jim" Pettry, 78, died Dec. 1, 2002, at the home of his sister, Barbara (Gary) Anderson, who were his caregivers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mariellen Wilson Pettry.
Mr. Pettry was born July 18, 1924, in Pettus, W.Va., son of the late Alfred and Nora Pettry. He was known as "Jim" by his family and friends. He spent his childhood and young adult life growing up in Whitesville, W.Va. He retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation, where he worked as a construction engineer in District 8. He was a 51-year member of the Boone Masonic Lodge 162 in Whitesville. He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wilmington, where he served as elder for 28 years. He attended Colcord Presbyterian Church during extended stays in West Virginia. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Corps as a member of a bomber squadron. His plane was shot down over Germany and he was held by the Germans as a POW for many months. He loved flying and continue to fly his personal airplane up until his recent illness.
He is survived by four sisters, Bette (Charles) Dillon of Whitesville, W.Va., Henrietta Long of Whitesville, W.Va., Nancy (Tim) Strickland of Charleston, S.C., and Nora Bannwart of Laporte, Ind.; a brother, Philip C. (Polly) Pettry of Colcord, W.Va.; a half brother, Delbert (Barbara) Pettry of Leevale, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Wayne Pettry; and two sisters, Martha and Sybil Pettry.
Funeral services were held noon Dec. 4 at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, Whites-ville, W.Va., with David Pettry, CLP, officiating. A second service was held noon Dec. 5 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wilmington, with the Rev. Don Mertz officiating. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington. Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 3 at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 at the church. Local arrangements were under the direction of FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington.
