Mapha Drake Hoskins
Died: Monday, December 30, 2002
Age: 98
Mapha Drake Hoskins, 98, died Dec. 30, 2002, at Cordova Rehabilitation Center in Memphis, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hoskins.
Mrs. Hoskins graduated from Blanchester High School in 1922 and received a county elementary certificate from Wilmington College in 1923. She was a member of the Crestview Presbyterian Church in Columbus.
She is survived by a son, Jack E. Hoskins of Avon, Ind.; two daughters, Marilyn Anderson of Waverly and Diane Sullivan of Memphis, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Janice Hoskins and Sabra Heilman; and a son, Bruce Hoskins.
A memorial service will be held noon April 5 at the Blanchester Cemetery.
Marjorie L. Hertlein
Died: Saturday, December 28, 2002
Age: 72
Marjorie L. Hertlein, 72, of Lynchburg., died Saturday morning (Dec. 28, 2002) at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Her husband, Harold C. Hertlein, died Jan. 11, 1981.
Mrs. Hertlein was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Dayton, daughter of the late Lee and Louise Wahrer Aydelott. She was a former member of the Lynchburg Order of Eastern Star, and had volunteered with the Lynchburg Life Squad for several years.
She is survived by three sons, Michael (Rita) Hertlein, David (Nancy) Hertlein and Alan (Debbie) Hertlein, all of Lynchburg; two daughters, Nancy (Jerry) Pfister and Janet (Brian) Collins, all of Lynchburg; 11 grandchildren, Tracy Pfister of Jacksonville, Fla., Matt Pfister of Wilmington, Tammy Hertlein of Columbus, Hannah Collins of St. Martin, Ryan Collins of Lynchburg, Emily Livengood of Blanchester, Cassie Young of Lynchburg, Ashley Collins of Lynchburg, Britney Hertlein of Lynchburg, Brett Hertlein of Lynchburg and Brooke Hertlein of Lynchburg; and a great-grandson, Zackary Howard of Jacksonville, Fla.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Welty.
Services will be at the convenience of the family Tuesday at the DAVIS-TURNER FUNERAL HOME, 201 Broadway St., Lynchburg, Pastor Bob Skipper officiating, with burial in Lynchburg Masonic Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Lester Welch
Died: Saturday, December 28, 2002
Age: 82
Lester Welch, 82, of Wilmington, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dayton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Nell Shaffer Welch. She died Jan. 29, 2002.
Mr. Welch was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Hamilton, son of the late John and Minnie Harrison Welch. He and his wife were the former owners and operators of the Little Giant Restaurant in Wilmington. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
He is survived by a daughter, Becky Perdue of New Vienna; two granddaughters, Christy and Stacey Perdue, both of New Vienna; three brothers, Edsel (Mae) Welch of McKee, Ky., Robert (Shirley) Welch of Dayton and Alvis (Lorraine) Welch of Everton, Ind.; and a sister, Bernice Sparks of McKee, Ky.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Chester, Jim, Edgar, Herman, Fred, Earl and Lyndon; and two sisters, Beatrice and Marie.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the DAVIS-TURNER FUNERAL HOME, 201 Broadway St., Lynchburg, the Rev. William Shaffer officiating, with burial in Dunn's Chapel Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Highland County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Erma Lee McCallister
Died: Friday, December 27, 2002
Age: 80
Erma Lee McCallister, 80, of Hillsboro (Allensburg), died Friday (Dec. 27, 2002) at her residence. Her husband, Joseph McCallister, died July 19, 1999. They were married April 16, 1949.
Mrs. McAllister was born Nov. 26, 1922, daughter of the late Harry and Inez Syferd Hinkson. She retired from the Blanchester school system and was the owner and operator of McCallister's Gift Shop. She was a member of the Westboro Friends Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Jeri (Donald) Strider of Midland, Ginger (Jim) Carpenter of Charlotte, N.C. and Jody (Rob Ford) Conner of Wilmington; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Hinkson; and a sister, Mary Jo Palmer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina, with burial in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westboro Friends Church.
Vivian Maxine Thacker

Age: 82
Vivian Maxine Thacker, 82, of Talbott, Tenn., formerly of South Charleston, W.Va., died Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002) at the Jefferson County Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Thacker.
Mrs. Thacker was the daughter of the late Leon and Mable Delbart. She attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
She is survived by a son, Dick (Pat) Thacker of Wilmington; two daughters, Connie (Roy) Blevins of South Pittsburg, Tenn., and Marti (Joe) Wolfe of Talbott, Tenn.; two grandsons, Scott Whittaker of Powell, Tenn., and Greg Wilmoth of Flintstone, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Katie and Kendall Whittaker and Tyler and Haley Wilmoth; a sister, Geraldine Bryant of St. Albans, W.Va.; and a brother, Phil Delbart of Parkersburg, W.Va.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Barker; and two brothers, Raymond and Basil Delbart.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the FARRAR FUNERAL HOME, 411 W. Broadway Blvd., Jefferson City, Tenn., Richard Booher, an elder in the Dandridge congregation, officiating, with burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Norma Ruth Dennington Burns-Pierce

Age: 67
Norma Ruth Dennington Burns-Pierce, 67, of Blanchester, died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2002) at Mt. Carmel West Medical Center, Columbus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Burns.
Mrs. Burns-Pierce was born Sept. 6, 1935, in Detroit, Mich., son of the late James Lee Dennington and Hazel L. Hale.
She is survived by five children, Daniel Burns of Williamsburg, Terry (Connie) Burns of New Vienna, Donna (David) Christian of Blanchester, Lisa Heeter of Brookville, Pa., and Paul Burns of Blanchester; a brother, Boyce Dennington of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Frances Noel of Louisville, Ky., and June Kudla of Port Charlotte, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, David Edwards Burns; and two brothers, Donald and Edward Dennington.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at TUFTS SCHILDMEYER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Main St., Blanchester, Brother Bill Webb officiating, with burial in the Blanchester I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Blanchester. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Nolie Powell
Died: Saturday, December 21, 2002
Age: 87
Nolie Powell, 87, of Oregonia, died Saturday (Dec. 21, 2002) at the VA Hospital, Dayton. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Grace Ann Newton Powell and Jean Water Powell.
Mr. Powell was born June 1, 1915, in Jackson, Ky., son of the late Byrd and Mary Ellen Wells Powell. He was a plumber and truck driver before he honorably served in the U.S. Army with the 439th Signal Battalion during World War II. He received training for farm managements from the Veterans Administration from 1949 to 1953. He then became a farmer in Warren County, raising grain and dairy cows along with swine until he retired. He enjoyed wintering in Summerfield, Fla., for many winters. He liked to deer hunt in Clifton Forge, Va., and in Wyoming. He was a life member of the VFW 8083. He lived most of his life in Warren County.
He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Walter of Clarksville, Bonnie Parker of Oregonia and Nola June Bryant of Clarksville; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arra of Lebanon and Fritz of Oregonia; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his two wives and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Miley, Erby and Malcom Powell; two sisters, Parrott Baker and Geneva Deski; and a stepson, Robert Howell.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at STUBBS-CONNER FUNERAL HOME, 185 N. Main St., Waynesville, with burial in Miami Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Glena Irene Bobbitt

Age: 83
Glana Irene Bobbitt, 83, of Wilmington, died 7:15 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 17, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Bobbitt.
Mrs. Bobbitt was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Forge Hill, Bath County, Ky., daughter of the late John M. and Emma Lee Sexton Ulery. She was a member of the American Legion Post 49 auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Max E. (Gladys) Bobbitt of Branston, Ky., and Ronald W. (Carol) Bobbitt of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Gloria Bobbitt Champion of Wilmington; two sisters, Alzada "Sadie" Bosier of Wilmington and Bertha Brinegar of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many special nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Ulery Jr., and a grandchild, Mark E. Bobbitt.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, the Rev. Elizabeth I. Looney officiating, with burial in Martinsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
