William "Bill" Levi Miller
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 97
William "Bill" Levi Miller, 97, of Wilmington, formerly of Bourneville, died 11:30 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 26, 2002) at the V.A. Medical Center in Chillicothe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laurena Mae Fels.
Mr. Miller was born July 3, 1905, in Ross County, son of the late William Thornton and Amanda Josephine Alexander Miller. He was a U.S. Army veteran and started working at the age of 14 for the state highway department. He helped in the construction and demolition of Camp Sherman and also worked on the initial construction of the current veteran's hospital. He worked on the railroad, for a highway contractor and at the veteran's hospital. In his later years, he was a self-employed small farmer.
He is survived by a son, Charles "Chuck" J. (Carol) Miller of Wilmington; a granddaughter, Christina A. Miller of Wilmington; a brother, Joe Miller of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Josephine "Tommy" Jernigan of Memphis, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and David; four brothers, Ralph (Hortence) Miller, Lou (Grace) Miller, Charles (Edith) Miller and Earl (Wilma) Miller; and four sisters, Ruth Miller, Blanche Miller, Jean Miller and Sara Katherine "Pete" (Bill) Anderson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the SMITH-MOORE FUNERAL HOME in Bainbridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Homer Carl Wright
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 55
Homer Carl Wright, 55, of 580 E. Washington St., Sabina, died 4:20 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 26, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Wright was born July 8, 1947, in Wilmington, son of the late Homer E. and Helen Lukens Wright. He was a birthright Quaker.
He is survived by two brothers, David (Barbara) Wright of Wilmington and William L. (Mari-Ann) Wright of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia Wright Wolfe of Sabina and Carolyn (Vernon) Baker of Springfield; seven nephews; seven nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family Tuesday at Sugar Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.
Georgia Mae Ritchie
Died: Friday, October 25, 2002
Age: 51
Georgia Mae Ritchie, 51, of South Lebanon, died peacefully Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) at her home.
She was born April 4, 1951, in South Lebanon, daughter of her dear mother, Jessie Howard of South Lebanon, and her father, the late Eugene Stephens. She was employed at Avco Tube and Bar Co. in Mason for the past five years. She was a life-long resident of the area and attended Kings High School. She was an avid bowler at her favorite lanes in Lebanon and Wilmington.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Clint Hobbs Jr. of South Lebanon and Lee (April) Hobbs of Morrow; a daughter, Crystal (Jaimie) Keeton of Clarksville; four brothers, Melvin Ritchie, Alfred, Red and Tommy Stephens; four sisters, Pauline Spurling, Mary Melzer, Thelma Wilson and Lois Tucker; and two grandchildren, C.J. and Christopher Hobbs.
Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Tuesday at STINE-KILBURN FUNERAL HOME, 801 Monroe Road, Lebanon, with burial in Deerfield Cemetery, South Lebanon. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held noon Wednesday at Deerfield Cemetery.
Shirley Elaine Gibbs
Died: Friday, October 18, 2002
Age: 66
Shirley Elaine Gibbs, 66, of Greenfield, died 1:47 p.m. Friday (Oct. 18, 2002) at Grant Medical Center, Columbus. Her husband, Richard Howard Gibbs, died Aug. 14, 1998.
Mrs. Gibbs was born March 26, 1936, in Chillicothe, daughter of the late James and Virginia Louise Johnson Davis. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by nine children, Melissa Turner of Greenfield, Dana Turner of Midland, Mark Turner of of Greenfield, Emanuel Jr. (Angelika) Turner of Hillsboro, John Turner of Greenfield, Tina Turner (Msgt. Clemmie) Jones of Fort Bragg, N.C., Albert Horne of Columbus, Mary Johnson (William) Jones of Columbus and Amy Harrington May of Greenfield; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Melissa Jane Davis Austin of Columbus and Joyce Ann Davis of Hillsboro; and a brother, James Everett Davis Jr. of Oklahoma City, Okla.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Twanna Gibbs; and a sister, Constance Austin.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at ANDERSON-STRUEVE FUNERAL HOME, 306 S. Washington St., Greenfield, the Rev. Franklin Gray officiating, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Roger Allen Flint
Died: Thursday, October 17, 2002
Age: 58
Roger Allen Flint, 58, of Wilmington, died Thursday (Oct. 17, 2002) at Autumn Years Nursing Center, Sabina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Faye Vanscoy Flint.
Mr. Flint was born Aug. 16, 1944, in Wilmington, son of the late Virgil and Fay Floyd Flint.
He is survived by a son, Christopher Allen Flint of Wilmington; a sister, Ruby Prickett of Wilmington; a brother, Freddy (Linda) Flint of Wilmington; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Dean Flint and Phillip Flint; and a sister, Joyce Ann Flint.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, Earl Vanscoy officiating, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery, where the Wilmington American Legion Post 49 memorial squad will conduct full military honors. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in care of the funeral home.
Kathleen Roe
Died: Thursday, October 17, 2002
Age: 68
Kathleen Roe, 68, of Wilmington, died 9:57 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 17, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, James K. Roe. They were married Sept. 16, 1984.
Mrs. Roe was born Feb. 4, 1934, in Kentucky, daughter of the late Sam and Mary Short Raleigh. She was a member of the Lynchburg Church of Christ.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Vaughn R. (girlfriend Brenda S. Knisley) Burton of Wilmington and Russell E. (Chris) Burton of Wilmington; two stepsons, Mike (Sheryl) Roe of Sabina and David (Jody) Roe of Leesburg; a stepdaughter, Lisa (Jerry) Kessler of Sabina; a brother, Vernon Raleigh of Summerset, Ky.; three sisters, Betty (Gary) Smith of Lynchburg, Imogene Walter of Hillsboro and Maxine (Marvin) Brose of Cornith, Miss.; two grandchildren, Sasha Burton and Sheena Burton; six stepgrandchildren, Adam Roe, Chelsey Roe, Sarah Roe, Andrew Roe, Dustin Kessler and Brittany Kessler.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Muskecamp; and a stepbrother.
Visitation will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.
William Melville Bailey
Died: Wednesday, October 16, 2002
Age: 70
William Melville Bailey, 70, of Brandon, Fla., formerly of Wilmington, died Wednesday (Oct. 16, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Bailey was born May 13, 1932, in Wilmington, son of the late Emmett H. and Marion Bailey. He graduated as valedictorian from Greenbrier Military Institute and received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University, where he was valedictorian and first in his law class. He was cadet commander of the Washington and Lee R.O.T.C. and served as an officer during the Korean War. He was corporate counsel for Western Union and Campbell Soups prior to practicing law in Wilmington. He retired as the law director of the Hillsborough County Law Library in Tampa, Fla. He was a member of the Eagle Scouts, Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the Coif and the Washington and Lee Endowment Fund.
He is survived by two brothers, David E. (Connie) Bailey of Wilmington and John E. Bailey of Pebble Beach, Calif.; and four nieces, Katie Collett and Laura Moyer, both of Wilmington, and Suzanne Herrera and Deborah Bailey.
Interment will be held in Brandon, Fla. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the donor's choice.
Betty Jean Plank
Died: Wednesday, October 16, 2002
Age: 62
Betty Jean Plank, 62, of Wilmington, died 2:25 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 16, 2002) at Dayton Heart Hospital.
She was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Morehead, Ky., daughter of the late Ollie and Dolly Stacey Steagall. She was a nursing assistant in home health care. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Wilmington.
She is survived by two sons, Denver W. Plank of Wilmington and Jerry A. (Jennifer) Plank of Wilmington; a brother, Robert J. Steagall of Morehead, Ky.; two stepgrandchildren, Scott and Nicholas Baker; and many special friends.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, Jerry Schaffer and Phillip Zeigler officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.
