Roberta Camp Walls, 76, of Blanchester, died 5:03 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 17, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Walls, who died Dec. 3, 2001. They were married March 20, 1976.
Mrs. Walls was born June 2, 1926, in Clinton County, daughter of the late John William and Mamie Jelena Nichols Camp.
She is survived by three stepsons, James A. Walls of Dayton, Michael E. Walls of Wilmington and Gregory A. Walls of Wilmington; a daughter, Vicki D. (Harry) Lambcke of Summerfield, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Sandra (Randell) Clouse of Fairborn; three brothers, James D. Camp of Indiana, Kenneth (Joan) Camp of Wilmington and Dean A. Camp of Wilmington; a sister-in-law, Ruth Camp of Wilmington; a sister, Shirley A. Dawson of Middletown; two grandchildren, Jeffery A. Lambcke of Summerfield, Fla., and Jason W. (Debra) Lambcke of Ocala, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Joseph Lambcke, Jesse Lambcke and Hayley Lambcke; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Clarissa Walls, Eric Roberts and Candace Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a stepson, Jonathan S. Walls.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, Sidney Clay officiating, with burial in New Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Cpl. James L. Griffith Jr.
Died: Saturday, August 17, 2002
Age: 24
Cpl. James L. Griffith Jr., 24, of 320 Fleming Road, New Vienna, died Saturday (Aug. 17, 2002) as a result of an automobile crash in California. He is survived by his wife, Amy Griffith. They were married Nov. 24, 1998.
Cpl. Griffith was born Oct. 4, 1977, in Wilmington, son of James L. Sr. and Marilyn Griffith of New Vienna. He was an amateur boxer. He attended the East Clinton Local School District.
He was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He reported to MCRD Parris Island on May 13, 1998. He joined VMFA 314 as an aircraft maintenance mechanic on Feb. 9, 1999. He embarked aboard the USS Stennis from Oct. 29, 2001, through May 23, 2002, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He performed his duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner as an airframes mechanic. His qualifications included collateral duty inspector, final checker both aboard ship and afloat, aircraft tune-up qualified, day crew supervisor for VMFA 314 and airframe shop. Work center collateral duties included safety awareness, FOD prevention and technical publication library clerk. Accomplishments while assigned to the work center included two overseas deployments -- one in Operation Southern Watch over Iraq and one in support of Operation Enduring Freedom over Afghanistan; participation in Operation Noble Eagle Homeland Defense; meritorious mast for outstanding performance in training 12 new Marines to become flight deck qualified on board the USS John C. Stennis, which deployed two months earlier than scheduled; and certificate of commendation for assisting in over 20 phase inspections while deployed on the USS Stennis in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. At this time, the squadron's 12 F/A-18 aircraft flew a record number of over 2,800 combat flight hours. His first-class leadership and attention to detail were directly responsible for maintaining full mission capable aircraft for combat operation in Afghanistan. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (three), the Meritorious Unit Citation and the Armed Forces Expedition Metal. Furthermore, he was due to received the Good Conduct Medal in December.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a brother, Mark (Aleshia) Griffith of Sabina; two sisters, Kelly Ann Griffith of New Vienna and Pam Weisenberger of Wilmington; his grandparents, Ralph and Virginia Brockman of New Vienna; two nieces, Carissa Weisenberger and Amie Griffith; a nephew, Zachary Griffith; and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by three grandparents, Harold Griffith, Leona Griffith and Mary Griffith.
Services will be held noon Saturday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, with burial in Clinton Memory Gardens, Wilmington, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Marine Corp. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Corporal James L. Paul R. Young
Died: Saturday, August 17, 2002
Age: 90
Paul R. Young, 90, of Midland, died Saturday (Aug. 17, 2002) at Kettering Memorial Hospital. His wife, Opal Hopkins Young, survives. They were married in Blanchester on Dec. 12, 1945.
Mr. Young was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Norwood, son of the late John William and Isadora Marconett Young. He was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Friends Church in Westboro. Mr. Young was a professional Chrysler mechanic, a former employee of Hollon Trucking of Blanchester, and retired from Wojcinski Sohio of Blanchester. He was a school bus driver for the Blanchester School District for over 18 years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Young is survived by a son, Kenneth (Glendora) Young of Midland; a daughter, Karen (Rick) Winters of Midland; a grandson, Galen Young of Midland; seven nieces and four nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Young was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Young; and three brothers, Harley Young, Leonard Young and Clarence Young.
A funeral service will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the DAVIS-TURNER FUNERAL HOME, 201 Broadway St. in Lynchburg, the Rev. Mary Cochran officiating, with burial in the Lynchburg Cemetery. Military honors will be provided at the cemetery by the Highland County Honor Guard. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Dorothy Ellen Moore Karnes

Age: 85
Dorothy Ellen Moore Karnes, 85, of Columbus, formerly of Wilmington, died Friday (Aug. 16, 2002) at Mill Run Gardens Care Center in Hilliard. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Karnes. The couple was married 52 years.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended The Ohio State University. She was named to Who's Who of American Women in 1968 and 1969. She retired after 20 years service with the Nicklaus Prescription Center, where she worked from 1955-1975.
She is survived by a loving daughter, Sharon Boyer of Columbus; a son, James Daniel (Charlie) Karnes of Columbus; five grandchildren, Greg (Sue) Boyer of Hilliard, Tim Boyer of Westerville, Jill (Dr. Matthew) Lehnert of Germany and Jack Boyer of Hilliard; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Corwin (Kathryn M.) Hale of Wilmington and Mrs. Robert (Betty M.) Foster of Wilmington; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Joan Rulon.
A private family service will be held at the TIDD FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, with Pastor Steve Wachtman officiating and interment in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you send flowers to your own parents or someone you love.

Reuben Phillips

Age: 73
Reuben Phillips, 73, of 1291 Antioch Road, Wilmington, died 1:45 a.m. Friday (Aug. 16, 2002) at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Phillips, who died April 26, 1995. They were married Aug. 8, 1948.
Mr. Phillips was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Monterey, Tenn., to the late Hilliary and Sarah Phillips. He was well known throughout the community for the 47 years he spent working in service stations. During the 1940s and 1950s, he worked at the Pure Oil Station. From the 1960s through the 1980s, he worked at the Uptown Gulf, Southridge Shell and West End Shell stations.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Walter) Lambcke of Wilmington and Debra Hayslip of Wilmington; two brothers, Tim (Reba) Phillips of Monterey, Tenn., and M.G. (Susie) Phillips of Monterey, Tenn.; two sisters, Millie Whittaker of Monterey, Tenn., and Magdalene (Donald) Whittaker of Monterey, Tenn.; two grandchildren, John (Jodi) Lambcke of Naples, Fla., and Shelly (Chris) Arnold of Wilmington; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Arnold of Wilmington and Bailey Arnold of Wilmington; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Molliann Ousley of Naples, Fla., and T.J. Ousley of Naples, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a close family friend, Ted Moore of Mesa, Ariz.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Goodman Phillips; and two sisters, Lilly Thompson and Mary Bailey.

John D. Rahe
Died: Friday, August 16, 2002
Age: 67
John D. Rahe, 67, of Bradenton, Fla., died August 16, 2002, in Doctor's Hospital in Sarasota, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Joann Hallsted Rahe, whom he married July 27, 1957.
He was born Oct. 19, 1934, in Madeira, son of John Vincent and Loretta Cecilia Rape. He moved to Longboat Key, Fla., and later to Bradenton, Fla. in 1990. He was an educator and served as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent of Madeira City Schools for 15 years before retiring in 1990. He later served as the executive director of the Council for Academic Excellence until 1998. A graduate of Wilmington College, he went on to earn a master's and a doctoral degree. He was an aviation officer in the U.S. Navy. He also was a member of Tara Golf & Country Club and Our Lady of The Angels Church in Bradenton, Fla.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jana R. (Jim) LaVanway of Chandler, Ariz. and Jacqueline R. (Phil) Scott of Richmond, Ind.; five grandchildren, John LaVanway, Jamie LaVanway, Andy Scott, Alexi Scott and Abbie Scott; a sister, Juanita Rack of Cincinnati; and two brothers, Paul Rape of Mason and Thomas Rape' of Loveland.
Services were held Aug. 20 at STRAWSER FUNERAL HOME, Cincinnati, with Father Mike DeTemple officiating. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Cincinnati. Memorial donations may be made to the John D. Rahe Scholarship Fund, in care of Madeira High School, Madeira, Ohio, 45243.
Margaret Lee Collett Minick

Age: 66
Margaret Lee Collett Minick, 66, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 2002) at Highland District Hospital, Hillsboro. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Hayslip; her second husband, Carlo Collett; and her third husband, Wayne Minick.
Mrs. Minick was born March 2, 1936, in Hazard County, Ky., daughter of the late Isaac Mason Murray and Jane (Barrett) Murray.
She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy (Wayne Teboe) Murray of Lynchburg, Ramona (Mike) Lengefeld of Hillsboro, Betty (Steve) Street of Hillsboro and Brenda (Randy) Booker of Alabama; six sons, David (Karen) Hayslip of Hillsboro, Rick (Bonnie) Collett of Lynchburg, Bob (Tammy) Collett of Wilmington, Donnie (Becky) Collett of Idaho, Randy (Beth) Lewis of Reynoldsburg and Mike (Sonya) Stewart of Florida; four sisters; a brother; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, the Rev. Michael Barthel officiating, with burial in Clinton County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
