Walter L. “Lee” Copeland
Walter L. “Lee” Copeland, 84, of Columbus, died Friday (June 18, 2004) at Kobacker House.
He was a pilot during World War II and was retired from Smith Brothers Hardware. He was a member of the Dublin Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Fran; daughters, Linda (Chic) Dortmund, Patricia (Brent) Dutcher, Nancy (Stuart) Douglass; grandchildren, Lee (Jenny), Amanda, Matt, Charlie and Andrea (Nate) Gonzalez, Holly and Andy; great-granddaughter, Isabella; brother, Dale (Florence) Copeland; sister, Gale Klingensmith.
Visiting hours will be at 12:30 p.m. prior to the service at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell, 450 West Olentangy St., Powell. Private burial will be in Dublin Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Thomas Camden Thorne Jr.
Thomas Camden Thorne Jr., 48, of Delaware, died May 23, 2004.
He was born April 5, 1956 to the late Thomas and Fay Thorne, formerly of Delaware. He was employed at Acoust-A-Fiber Inc. and enjoyed his job. He loved to go fishing, canoeing and camping whenever he could. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a great cook and enjoyed spicy and hot recipes of all kinds.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Autumn and Fred Curtis of Delaware; grandchildren, Justis, Carmen and Mija; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice and Floyd Arnholt of Ocala, Fla.; Beth and Vinney Argiro of Chesapeake, Va.; Cathy and Mike Curtin of Centerburg; a brother and sister-in-law, David and D’Vina of Big Pine Key, Fla.; an aunt, Nina Overturf, of Sunbury; and cousins, Sue Overturf of Sunbury and Jim and Brenda Overturf of Shepardsville, Ky.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Freddie.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 27 at Blue Limestone Park, King Avenue, with a picnic lunch to follow. For more information, contact Cathy Curtin at 740-965-9034.

Helen Bates Downing Owen
Helen Bates Downing Owen, 93, of Delaware, died Monday (Aug. 9, 2004) in the Sarah Moore Health Care Center. She was born Feb. 16, 1911 in Kinsman to Edward and Estelle (Storier) Bates. A resident of Delaware County since 1922, she graduated from Delaware High School in 1929 and from the Office Training School in Columbus in 1931. She was employed in the office of Bess Humphrey’s Auto Agency and as a clerical worker for the Chamber of Commerce before retiring. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church since 1922, the Rebecca Circle and a member of a mothers club.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Marcella Downing of Delaware and Ray and Linda Downing of Snellville, Ga.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Gene and Wilma Owen of Franklin; a stepdaughter, Nancy Elder of Las Vegas; six stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was precededin death by her husbands, Wallace Downing, on Feb. 3, 1969 and Edwin Owen, on Sept. 12, 1997; a brother, Harold Storier Bates; and a sister, Dorothy Bates.
Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Robinson Funeral Home, 32 W. Winter St., where a funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Benita Rollins officiating. Burial will be in Marlborough Cemetery.

Judith “Judy” Eaches Schellenberg
Judith “Judy” Eaches Schellenberg, 59, of Delaware and formerly of Radnor, died unexpectedly Friday (Aug. 6, 2004) at her residence.
She was born Jan. 9, 1945 in Paulding County, Ohio to Raymond John and Mary Margaret Noneman Daeger. A Delaware County resident since 1970, she had worked for Buehler Foods in Delaware in the service department. She volunteered for People In Need and the Council for Older Adults. She was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
She is survived by her foster parents, Don and Marge Parsons of Richwood; one daughter, Jan Belcher of Marion; one son, John Eaches of Marion; three grandchildren, Kelsie Eaches, Allison Belcher and Emily Belcher; two brothers, John Daeger of Paulding and Richard Daeger of Blythewood, S.C.; and one sister, Joan Todd of Fort Wayne, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Peggy Heil.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rodman Bennett Brown Funeral Home, 92 N. Sandusky St., where the family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m.

Richard Bartlett
Richard Bartlett, 71, of Lancaster, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 2004) at Grant Medical Center.
He was a real estate broker and co-owner of Bartlett Benner Realty. He was a former real estate director for Anchor Hocking for 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean conflict. He was past president of the Chamber Improvement Corp. for the Lancaster Fairfield County Chamber.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; two sons, Steve Bartlett of Lancaster and Gary (Patricia) Bartlett of Canal Winchester; and three grandchildren, Zachary and Nicholas Bartlett and Kelsey Kelly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harper and Edith Bartlett; and a brother, Russ.
Visiting hours will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 Wednesday at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N. Columbus St., Lancaster. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 163 E. Wheeling St., Lancaster, with the Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Friends may also call one hour prior to service at the church. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Ricky J. “Rick” Black
Ricky J. “Rick” Black, 44, of Delaware and formerly of Mount Vernon, died Sunday (Oct. 10, 2004) at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville.
He was born Jan. 27, 1960 in Columbus and was a 1978 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. He was employed as a golf course greens keeper, having worked in Denver, Charlotte, N.C., and most recently at the Royal American Golf Club near Westerville. He was a member of the Central Ohio and National Greens Keepers associations. He attended the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his wife, Lelia (Johnson) Black; his mother, Gloria (Miesse) Black-Humes of Lewis Center; his son, Rick O. Black, of Mount Vernon; his daughters, Rachel (William) Stacy, Elizabeth Black and Carla Black, all of Mount Vernon; his stepson, Shane Graham, of Mount Vernon; stepdaughters, Melissa (Robert) Calbert; Rachel Graham and Elizabeth Graham, all of Mount Vernon; stepgranddaughter, Cierrah Calbert; his maternal grandmother, Pauline Miesse Neal, of Delaware; uncle, Jerry (Joyce) Miesse, of Apple Valley; and cousins, Barth Miesse and Barry Miesse, both of St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by his father, Owen Black, in 1990; stepfather, Garrett Humes, in 1992; maternal grandfather, Donald Miesse; and paternal grandparents, Okie and Donna Black.
Visiting hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Assembly of God, 1051 Beech St., Mount Vernon, where a memorial service will follow at 5 p.m.

Joel Isaiah Dowler
Joel Isaiah Dowler, of LaRue, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 2004) at Children’s Hospital.
He was born July 11, 2002 in Marion to Phillip and Sheryl (Brooker) Dowler.
He is survived by his parents; his twin brother, Jude Dowler; two sisters, Whitney and Emily Dowler; a stepbrother, Benjamin Stephens of North Carolina; his grandparents, Robert and Mildred Dowler of Upper Sandusky and Nancy Brooker of New Bloomington; and a great-grandmother, Lucille Dowler of Upper Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Carl Brooker; a great-grandfather, Dean Dowler; and an uncle, Dennis Brooker.
Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Boyd Funeral Home, 122 W. Columbia St., Marion, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Herb Jordan and the Rev. Paul McKenzie officiating. Burial will be in Agosta Cemetery.

Janice L. Litter
Janice L. Litter, 64, formerly of Chillicothe, died Friday (Oct. 8, 2004) at her home after a brief illness.
She was born April 5, 1940 in Delaware and moved to Corbin with her husband 19 years ago. In 1997, she retired from a management position with the Knights Inn. She attended the Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Litter; three daughters, Deborah Hunt and her husband, Ted Hickman, of Corbin, Kathy Payne of Chillicothe and Sharon Painter of London, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Anita Turner and Shawn Hunt of Corbin, Jordan, Ashton, Lincoln and Mikiah Payne of Chillicothe, and Shirrah Moore of Marysville; five great-granddaughters, Makaila, Cheyenne, Makena, Danielle and McKenzie; four sisters and two brothers, Barb and Larry Opel, Jean and Jack Hemsworth and Vonna and Marvin Hughes, all of Delaware, Jane Cahill of Arizona, Larry and Pam Hillard of Missouri and Chuck Hillard of Whitehall; mother-in-law, Alice Litter of Chillicothe, Art and Ann Litter, Bud and Sally Mark, Mark and Denise Litter, Martin and Beth Litter, Laura Litter, Joe and Kim Litter and Peter Litter, Molly and Byron Lloyd; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen McClain Hillard; her father and stepmother, John and Darlene Hillard; a brother, Gerald; an infant daughter, Glenda; and an infant great-granddaughter.
Visiting hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Bell Tower in Bourneville, where services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Chillicothe.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; son, Shea; parents, John (Betty) of Powell and Betty (Jim) Bringardner of Lewis Center; brothers, Mike (Debbie) of Ostrander, Roger (Debbie) and John (Sandy Fraley), all of Delaware and Jimmy Bringardner of Lewis Center; sister, Kathy (Pat) Glassburn of Delaware; father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Elmyra Culp of Columbus; sister-in-law, Vickie (Bill) Saunders of Sunbury; special aunt, Virginia Dodd of Powell; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Ken Schuette and Harold Heinz; grandparents, Walter and Garnet Schuette; and uncle, Jim Dodd.
