Gladys Cross
Gladys I. Cross, 100, of Sunbury, died Monday afternoon (Aug. 14, 2000) at Cancio's Adult Family Home near Sunbury.
She was born on April 4, 1900, in Columbus to Isaac Allen and Myrtle Louise (Edwards) Shannon. Gladys worked at Nestlés in Sunbury for many years before she went to work at the Delaware County Clerk of Courts office and served as the Delaware County Clerk of Courts from 1950 until 1957. She was a lifelong Sunbury area resident.
Gladys was a member of Sunbury United Methodist Church and the Progress Club. She enjoyed roses and gardening.
Along with her parents, she was proceeded in death by two husbands, Lamont Kempton and Clarence Cross; a brother, Arthur Shannon; three sisters, Hazel Edmister, Harriet Kiser and Mildred Ross; and a nephew, Jim Ross.
Surviving are her sister, Mary Satterfield of Columbus; three nieces and their spouses, Patty and Clair Stout of Marion, Ind., Judy and Fred Shumway of Lewis Center, and Barbara and Charles Nuckles of Palmdale, Calif.; four nephews and their spouses, John Edmister of Tennessee, Edon and Barbara Edmister of Howard, Rollin and Yvonne Kiser of Lewis Center, and Donald and Alma Shannon of Sunbury; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation was at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, where funeral services followed with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Interment followed in Sunbury Memorial Park.
Lela B. Crowl
Lela B. Crowl, 91, Sunbury, died Sunday (Oct. 17, 1999) at St. Ann's Hospital.
She was born Feb. 3, 1908, on the Delaware/Licking County line to the late Christopher and Byra (Hartsock) Needles.
A 1925 graduate of Hartford High School and a lifelong Sunbury area resident, she had been a clerk for various area grocery stores, was employed at the former Kilgore and Nestle plants and was retired from the microfilm department at the Franklin County Courthouse.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and John Wise, Sunbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Leland P. Crowl, who died Oct. 25, 1994; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Calling hours were at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury. Funeral services were held with the Rev. Larry Griffin officiating. Interment was in Sunbury Memorial Park.
Melvin Croy
Melvin R. Croy, 84, Kenton, died on Sunday (November 17, 2002) at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
He was born on September 24, 1918, in Hardin County to the late Alva and Moade (Reed) Croy. A member of the Kenton High School Class of 1937, he retired from Conrail where he worked as a brakeman and conductor. He served in World War II in the United States Air Force with the 6th Cargo Squadron, and he also served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Masonic Latham Lodge 154, Elks Lodge 157, and St. John's Lutheran Church, Dola.
Surviving are his wife, Marie (Gatchell) Croy, whom he married in Dola on August 25, 1946; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane E. and Earl William Hawkins of Sunbury and Nancy and John P. Rea of Columbus; four grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Ronald "Red" Wolford of Lima.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ardinell Richards.
Visitation was held at Schindewolf Stevens Stout Funeral Home, where funeral services were held with Pastor Jeff Elmquist officiating.
Interment was in Dunkirk Cemetery with graveside military honors performed by the Honor Guard of AmVets Post 1994.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church of Dola.
Pauline L. Balch Crumb
Pauline L. Balch Crumb, 77, of Delaware died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at the Arbors of Delaware.
She was born on February 23, 1923, in Delaware County and was a 13-year employee of the Boston Store. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Walter Balch and Paul Crumb.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Anna Balch and Larry and Marjorie Balch, all of Delaware; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held at Bennett Brown Rodman Funeral Home, Delaware, where funeral services will be held with Rick Balch officiating. Burial was in Fancher Cemetery.
Lottie Crum
Lottie Crum, 73, died Monday (January 21, 2002) at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, two sisters and two brothers.
Crum is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Mike Kelley of Centerburg; by sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Sue Crum of Lima and Charles and Brenda Crum of Centerburg; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters; two brothers; numerous nieces and nephews; and by many special friends at Regency Plaza.
Visitation was at Evans Funeral Home, Columbus, where services were held with Brother Ed Sutherland officiating.
Interment was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Kathryn Culbertson
Kathryn Angie Russell Culbertson, 82, of Sunbury and formerly of Powell Road, Lewis Center, died Wednesday morning (Oct. 4, 2000) at Grady Memorial Hospital, Delaware, following an extended illness.
She was born in Zone, Fulton County, on July 18, 1918, to the late Malon and Eva Rupp Russell. A graduate of Fayette High School, she was a lifelong homemaker who greatly enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Daffodil and Iris societies.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband whom she married on Dec. 5, 1939, Raymond Culbertson, on Feb. 3, 1995; a sister, Barbara Atkins; and her stepfather, Charles McGowan.
Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Peggy Culbertson of Skiatook, Okla., Larry and Carol Culbertson of Las Cruces, N. M., John and Beth Culbertson of Troy, and Mikel and Sandra Culbertson of Vandalia; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dan Triplett of Sunbury; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lowell McGowan of Bevan.
Visitation was held at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Delaware, where funeral services were held with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial was in Kingwood Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the charity of the donor's choice.
Arthur Culver Jr.
Arthur Moore Culver Jr., 83, Sunbury, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born in Sunbury on May 16, 1917, to the late Arthur M. and Mary E. (Price) Culver Sr. and spent most of his life in the Sunbury and Galena area. He was a member of Galena United Methodist Church, and a member of the Sunbury High School Class of 1935, where he was an honor student, president of his senior class and athletics participant.
A wonderful husband and very loving, kind, and sharing father, he had a keen interest in sports. A graduate of Office Training School, he attended Ohio State University and was a former employee of Buckeye Transport, E. Brooke Matlack, and the Department of Interstate Commerce Commission, where he retired as district supervisor.
He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, having served in the Philippine Islands. Mr. Culver was a member of Sparrow Lodge No. 400 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple Shrine, Delaware County Scottish Rite, Delaware County Shrine Club, American Association of Retired Persons, the national and state associations of Retired Federal Employees, Sunbury American Legion Post No. 457, Big Walnut Historical Society, founding member of the Berkshire Township Zoning Board and a former worker for the American Cancer Drive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bronson Culver, and a sister, Jeannette Foster.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Pauline (Shultz) Culver, whom he married on November 4, 1939; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol E. and Clark Wood of Galena and Anita and Thomas O. Wolverton of Columbus; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Marge Culver of Delaware; seven grandchildren, Curtis (Donna) Lohr, Dwight (Leslie) Lohr, Deanna, Clinton and Andrew Wolverton and Bryce and Kelsey Culver; two step-grandchildren, Jeff and Paige Wolverton; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, with a Masonic service also held. Funeral services were held at Galena United Methodist Church with the Reverend Sue Antolik officiating. Interment, with military honors, was at Sunbury Memorial Park.

Terry L. Curren
Terry L. Curren, 34, Sunbury, died November 28, 2001 at his residence. He was born July 19, 1967 in Delaware.
Mr. Curren was an employee of Shelly and Sands Company in Delaware, a graduate of Big Walnut High School and Delaware JVS, and a member of the Eagles Lodge in Sunbury.
He is survived by one son, Jay Curren of Sunbury; one daughter, Christine Curren of Sunbury; his mother, Rachel (Coleman) Curren of Delaware; his father, Larry Curren of Sunbury, a sister, Jennill Keece of Delaware; his paternal grandfather, Frosty Curren of Galion; and the mother of the children, Laura Kines of Galena.
Visitation was at Bennett Brown Rodman Funeral Home in Delaware where funeral services were held. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Ray Curtis
Ray Curtis, 69, of Delaware, died Friday evening (March 27, 1998) at his home following a five-month illness.
He was born in Flat Gap, Ky., on June 19, 1928, to the late Samantha Curtis. He had lived in Sunbury for 41 years, and the last four years in Delaware. He was a breeder, trainer, and driver of standardbred horses, and had three horses on the circuit with his son during 1997. He had previously owned the car wash in Sunbury, and also had one in Westerville. In his early years, he had worked as a towmotor operator for the Galena Brick and Shale Co., with 25 years of service.
He was a member of the Delaware County Harness Horsemen and the United States Trotting Association.
He married Carrie Conn in Delaware on Dec. 24, 1952; she survives. Mr. Curtis also is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Steve and Nance Curtis of Delaware; granddaughters Angel and Katie; great-granddaughter Devon Rachel; a sister, Margie Thompson of Delaware; his nephew and his wife, Larry and Judy Thompson of Kilbourne; and his mother-in-law, Christine Conn of Ashland, Ky.
Services were at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, with the Rev. Gerald Davis officiating. Interment was in Berkshire Cemetery.

Rouie Curtis
Rouie Curtis, age 91 of Kentucky, passed away on Sunday (August 6, 2000) at the home of her daughter in Park Hills, Ky.
She was born on Jan. 29, 1909 in Johnson County, Ky., to the late Alive and Belle (Salyer) Lemaster.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Bill Blair of Park Hills, Ky., and Carolyn and Willard Stambaugh of Sunbury; son and daughter -in-law Rexford and Nellie Curtis of Centerburg; brother Luther Lemaster of Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; and lots of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband James M. Curtis, one grandson, four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held at Jones and Preston Funeral Home, Paintsville, Ky., the Rev. Darin Stambaugh and the Rev. Wayne Knisely officiating.
