Athena Schmidt
Athena Janet Schmidt, 82, Columbus, passed away on Sunday (October 21, 2001) at Mt. Carmel East Hospital after a long illness.
She retired from General Motors and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, and a great-grandson, Mark J. Schlaegel.
Surviving are her devoted, loving husband of 64 years, George W. Schmidt; her loving daughter, Wanda Mae (James) Sharon of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two granddaughters, Sunday M. (James) Schlaegel of Galena and Sandy S. (Tim) Prawdzik of Gahanna; a grandson, James E. (Candy) Sharon Jr. of Croton; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many friends and family.
Funeral services were held at Schoedinger East Chapel, Columbus, with the Reverend David Leckrone officiating. Interment was in Glen Rest Memorial Estate.
L. Merlin Schroeder
L. Merlin Schroeder, 81, of Marion and formerly of Marengo, died Friday morning (November 16, 2001) at Sunbridge Care Facility, Marion.
He was born on June 27, 1920, in Beloit, Wisconsin, to the late Charles and Julia (Hackett) Schroeder, and was a veteran of the United States Army in World War II. Lewis moved to Marion in 1997 from Marengo, and worked as an outreach liaison for Seniors on Center, Mount Gilead, for 10 years and had owned and operated the former Village Shoppe, Marengo, for 16 years.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, Marion; Ambassadors Sunday school class; and the American Legion Post No. 97, Cardington.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Thelma Cutts, Hazel Bradenburg and Vivian Stickler Garde.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Mary Alice Davis Webb Schroeder; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Debbie Schroeder of Walworth, Wisconsin, and Gary and Eva Schroeder of Elkhorn, Wisconsin; a daughter, Trudie Ernest of Redwing, Minnesota; four stepsons and spouses, Tom and Zeenat Webb of Delaware, Terry Webb of Orient, Bob and Lori Webb of Columbus, and Mark and Tammi Webb of Huber Heights; a stepdaughter and spouse, Kim and Curt Grau of Duncan, South Carolina.; 29 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, H. Wayne Schroeder of Beloit, Illinois; and 45 foster children.
Visitation was held at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, where funeral services were held with Pastor Phil Williams officiating. Interment, with military honors, was in Bloomfield Cemetery, Sparta.
Carl Emerson Schug
Carl Emerson Schug, 70, Pedro, Ohio, passed away Tuesday (May 22, 2001) at VAMC in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born January 24, 1931 in Coal Grove, Ohio, the son of the late Earl and Nora Haynes Schug.
Schug was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Zoar Ridge Pentecostal Church on Slabfork. He attended Linden-McKinley High School and Bliss College in Columbus. Schug was a sales manager for Singer Sewing Machine Company and operated Carl's Antiques in Ironton.
While he was born in Coal Grove, Schug lived most of his life in Franklin County, moving back to Lawrence County in 1989.
Schug is survived by his wife, Helen M. Lyall Schug whom he married September 12, 1951. He is also survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Karen Haverkos of Reynoldsburg and Sharen and Barry Collins of New Brighten, Pennsylvania; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Joyce Schug of Westerville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Chester Schug of Grove City; and one sister, Donna Potts of Indiana.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Wellman Ray Schug.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, is in charge of the arrangements.
Carter E. Scites
Carter Eugene Scites, 77, Youngtown, Ariz., a former insurance agent in Delaware, died Friday (Sept. 10, 1999) in Sun City, Ariz.
He was born July 25, 1922, in Pedro, to Wilbur and Belle Scites.
Mr. Scites was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He was a master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard. An Allstate insurance salesman for 32 years, he was a member of Post 62 of the Peoria Arizona American Legion, Hiram Masonic Lodge of Delaware and the Elks in Delaware. He was a past commander of the American Legion post in Delaware.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Jane Scites; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer and Charles Hess, Fredericksburg, Va., and Janice Scites, Basking Ridge, N.J.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Garey and Lori Scites, Naperville, Ill., and Gene and Lilia Scites, Phoenix; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Priscilla and Garnet Steel and Pansy Arnold.
Memorial services were at Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church, Sun City, Ariz. Burial was at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix.

Bernard Searles
Bernard J. Searles, 85, Village of Westerville Retirement Center, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Village of Westerville Nursing Center.
He was born in Berkshire Township on Nov. 18, 1914, to the late Jay M. and Minnie (Mead) Searles.
A retired farmer and livestock inspector, he was a 50-year member of Condit Presbyterian Church and served as an elder and trustee. He was a 60-year member and past master of Sparrow Lodge No. 400 F&AM, a 50-year member of Columbia Chapter No. 33 Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus and Aladdin Shrine. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corp.
Surviving are his wife, Lola Dell (Jennings) Searles; a daughter and son-in-law, Nan and Keith Wampler, Granville; a brother-in-law and wife, Raymond and Helen Jennings, Gallipolis; a sister-in-law and husband, Mary Elizabeth and Tom Brenner, Sunbury; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Arlo; and two sisters, Lillian Carnes and Mildred Satterfield.
Calling hours were at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury. Funeral services were held with the Rev. Carol Weiss officiating. Burial followed in Trenton Cemetery.

Lolly Searles
Lola Dell "Lolly" Searles, 85, Westerville, formerly of Sunbury, died Sunday morning (April 15, 2001) at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville.
Born in Condit, Delaware County, on October 10, 1915, to the late Dan and Bessie (Farris) Jennings, she was a retired high school teacher with the Big Walnut School District, where she taught for 27 years before retiring in 1976. She also taught in Miamisburg High School for five years prior to teaching at Big Walnut.
A graduate of Otterbein College, she was a member of Condit Presbyterian Church, Friendly Club, Church Women United, Columbia Chapter No. 33 OES, and the Search Light Club, and was secretary of the residents council at Huber Village and a reading volunteer for Pointview Elementary School. She tutored many students after her retirement.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her stepmother, Millie (Leach) Jennings, who raised her after her mother's death; and her husband, Bernard J. Searles, who passed away on December 30, 1999.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Nan and Keith Wampler, and her grandson, Jay Wampler, all of Granville; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Ray and Helen Jennings of Gallipolis; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Brenner of Sunbury.
Visitation was held Tuesday at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, and one hour prior to the funeral service held Wednesday at Condit Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Carol Weiss officiated. Interment followed at Trenton Cemetery.

Robert Searles
Robert M. Searles, 64, of Sunbury died suddenly Wednesday (Oct. 21,1998) at Riverside Methodist Hospitals, Columbus.
He was born on Sept. 22, 1934, in Berkshire Township to the late Arlo M. and Alice M. (Augenstein) Searles. A lifelong area resident, he was a member of the Big Walnut High School Class of 1953 and a graduate of Columbus Barber College and the Ohio State University. He was a CPA and owner of Robert M. Searles & Assoc.
Mr. Searles was a 33-degree Mason; past Most Wise Master of Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus; past Master of Sparrow Lodge 400 F&AM; past president of the 14th District Masonic Assoc.; past district education officer of the Delaware County Shrine; a member of the Ohio Lodge of Research Grotto; past patron of the Columbia Chapter No. 33 Order of the Eastern Star; and a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Accepted Royal Order of Scotland, the Masonic Vet. Association, the Masonic Service Association, and the Aladdin Temple Shrine.
He was also a member and former trustee of Sunbury United Methodist Church and the Grady Memorial Hospital Development Committee; and a member and past president of the Sunbury Lions Club. His former activities include the Grady Memorial Hospital Home Health Board, Sunbury Village Zoning and Tax Appeal boards, Big Walnut High School Steering Committee, VP Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity, President of Dollars for Scholars, American Legion, and the OSU Alumni Association.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jay M. Searles.
He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Joyce (Neal) Searles; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Linda Searles of Columbus; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teri and James Swonger of Westerville and Tami and Steve Blowers of Cincinnati; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Meredith, Michelle, Adam, and Neil; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Joan Starkey of Wooster, Phyllis and Danny Meige of Reynoldsburg, and Minnetta and David Boyd of Arizona; several nieces and nephews; and a special uncle and aunt, Bernard and Lola Dell Searles of Sunbury.
Visitation was held with a Masonic service at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury. Funeral services were held at Sunbury United Methodist Church with the Revs. David and Suzanne Hill and Dick Smith officiating. Interment followed in Sunbury Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Lodge No. 400 F&AM or Sunbury United Methodist Church.
Kerry Seavolt
Kerry K. Seavolt, 36 of Marengo, died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident early Saturday (Marc 6, 1999) in Marengo.
He was born in Mt. Vernon on Sept. 4, 1962. A graduate of Highland High School Class of 1981, he moved to Marengo from Mount Vernon in 1975. He worked in the construction trade as a house farmer for Ben Pickens Construction.
Survived by his parents, Patricia and Ed Cochran of Marengo and David and Sue Seavolt of Granville; children Kerry Seavolt II of Fulton, Amanda and Tracy Seavolt and their mother, Becky Vandall of Marengo; brother Kevin Seavolt of Wyoming; sisters Karen Cremeans of Centerburg and Tamara Cochran and Sabrina Lawson of Marengo; half-brothers Larry Cochran of Marengo and Steve Cochran of Delaware; half-sister Terri Cochran of Delaware; grandfather Cranston Whited of Marengo and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by grandparents, Mary and Ralph Seavolt and Eva Whited.
Visitation was at DeVore-Snyder Funeral home. Funeral services were held at Alum Creek Friends Church west of Marengo with Pastors Steve Jobe and Tony Watson officiating. Burial followed in the Church cemetery.

Thomas Schaad
Thomas E. Schaad, 67, Columbus, died Wednesday (February 6, 2002) at the Ohio State University Medical Center.
A member of St. Brendan Catholic Church, he was a retired employee of ABB and a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Schaad; and a brother, Father Jerome Schaad.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Jane Schaad; three daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Douglas Karcher, Carol and Kim Greenawalt, and Barbara and Timothy Simpson; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lori Schaad; a sister, Sister Elizabeth Anne; a brother and sister-in-law, Laurence and Nancy Schaad; and six grandchildren, Cory, Ryan, Cassie, Cody, Tyler and Isaac.
Visitation was held at Tidd Funeral Home, Hilliard, with a Mass of Christian Burial held at St. Brendan Catholic Church with celebrant Reverend Joseph J. Trapp II.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the MICU for their compassionate care, and sincere thanks goes to the Norwich Township paramedics.

Lawrence Lewis Schirtzinger
Lawrence Lewis Schirtzinger Sr., 62, died unexpectedly Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville.
He was born on Aug. 12, 1937, to the late Harold and Irene (Reed) Schirtzinger.
Surviving are his wife, Norma; four children and their spouses, Lora and Mike Montgomery, Joanna and Pete Ecos, Larry Jr. and Annette Schirtzinger, and Eric and Rena Schirtzinger; seven grandchildren, Trent and Ryan Montgomery, Evan and Caelan Ecos, and Gerrod, Joshua, and Christina Schirtzinger; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Bill Hamilton and Darlene and John Gaughan; his father- and mother-in-law, Roy and Joan Ralston; two sisters-in-law and husbands, Hannah and Art Hunt and Julie and Denny Davis; a brother-in-law and wife, Chris and Carol Ralston; a cousin, Bill Schirtzinger; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation was held at Moreland Funeral Home, Westerville. A Mass of Christian burial was held at Church of the Resurrection, New Albany, with the Rev. Tom Petry as celebrant. Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery.
