Dawerance H. Skatzes
Dawerance H. Skatzes, 86, Old Washington, Ohio, died Wednesday (February 21, 2001) at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky where he had resided for two years.
He was born August 21, 1914 in Delaware to the late Carl A. and Eulaha Clara (Stricklen) Skatzes. A protestant by faith, he was a retired teacher, principal and superintendent in the Old Washington School District. He was also a teacher and administrator in Zanesville and Columbus.
Skatzes was a World War II veteran, a member of the Cambridge Lodge 66 F&AM, Scottish Valley of Cambridge and V.F.W. Kipling. He joined the Ohio Army National Guard at the age of 18 and continued his service until he retired. He was a life member of the Eagles and Moose
He is survived by his wife, Mildred (Stillion) Skatzes, whom he married February 18, 1975; three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Thelma) Moore of Delaware, Mrs. Robert (Etta Ann) Williamson of San Jose, California, and Mrs. Neil (Neatha) Snyder of Avon Park, Florida; two sons, Carl A. (Monique) Skatzes of Tomball, Texas, and Brent A. (Sheila) Skatzes of Sunbury; three sisters, Mrs. Jane Boster, Mrs. Virginia Skatzes and Mrs. Dale (Shirley) Wilson of Delaware; 13 grandchildren; and by 10 great-grandchildren.
Skatzes was preceded in death by brothers Arthur, Norman and Richard Skatzes.
Visitation was Sunday at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services were held with the Rev. Andrew Woods officiating.
Burial was in Old Washington Cemetery.
Ruth Skeels
Ruth I. Skeels, 77, of Cardington and formerly of Fargo, died Wednesday (Oct. 21, 1998) at Galion Community Hospital.
She was born on March 26, 1921, in Scioto Township near Waverly to the late Cap and Melissa (Lyons) Sherman. She lived in the Fargo area from 1964 until 1988 and was a Cardington resident for four years before moving to Lakeview. Before retiring, she worked as an assembler for General Motors of Columbus. She attended Marion Enterprise Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Surviving are five sons and four daughters-in-law, David Parks of Columbus, Conroy and Ann L. Parks of Marengo, Roger and Elaine Parks of Las Vegas, Nev., James A. and Kathy Skeels of Missouri, and Ralph and Pandora Skeels of Las Vegas, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lee Sherman of Arizona and David Sherman of Kentucky; and two sisters, Marie Thomas of California and Susan Parks of Ohio.
Visitation was held at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, where funeral services were held with the Rev. Ben Gregory officiating. Interment was in Marengo Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the oncology department of Galion Community Hospital.
David Skeens
David I. Skeens, 64 of Sunbury, died unexpectedly Monday (May 17, 1999) at his home.
He was born in Harlem Township on Nov. 13, 1934 to the late Edward and Gertrude (McComas) Skeens. He had lived most of his life in Delaware County. He was a member of the Worthington Christian Church, Valley Tractor Club in Newark, Delaware County Tractor Club, Friends of 4-H volunteer, Harlem Boys Breakfast Club and tutored at Big Walnut Elementary and Middle Schools. He worked as a prep-cook at Worthington Retirement Village and served in the National Air Guard from 1953-1962.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jeanetta (Carpenter) Skeens; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Tammi Skeens of Sunbury; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Norman Pilkington of Sunbury; grandchildren Jason and Tracy Pilkington, Aimee Skeens and Kristen Zimmer; brother Robert Skeens of Sunbury, and sisters Betty June Stout of Columbus and Anita Wurm of Delaware.
He was preceded in death by his son, Keith Skeens on July 25, 1981.
Visitation was at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, where funeral services were held with Dr. Marshall Hayden officiating. Burial was in the Africa Cemetery.
Wayne Skinner
Wayne Ellis Skinner, 75, of Sunbury, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville.
He was born in Texarkana, Ark., on Sept. 29, 1924, to the late Robert and Esther (Cheatham) Skinner. A veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, he retired in 1987 as plant manager for North American Rockwell International, Columbus. He was a member of Rosehill Baptist Church, Reynoldsburg; Aerie 3614 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles; and a life member and former officer of the VFW Post No. 8736.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Dobota) Skinner in 1976; and three brothers, Norman, W.R. (Dub), and Bob.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Russell and Mickey of Larkspur, Colo., Norman and Kathy of Cincinnati, and Rockland of Dayton; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Robert Drumm of Pataskala; six grandchildren, Sherry, Rusty, Aaron, Dannielle, Greg and Mark; a great-grandson, Thomas; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Ray of Rockwell, Texas, Pete of Dallas, Texas, and Cecil and Linda Sue of Sunbury; and his loving friend and companion, Carrie Tobin and her family.
Visitation was held at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, where services were held with the Rev. Carol Weiss officiating. Interment was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with military honors by VFW Post No. 8736.
Emma M. Skiver
Emma M. Skiver, 84, of Canal Winchester, formerly of Sunbury, died Sunday morning (March 8, 1998) at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
She was born in Columbus on Nov. 13, 1913, to the late John and Agnes (Hymes) McMillen. She was homemaker and had lived in Canal Winchester since 1986.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rebecca Pfleager of Columbus; grandchildren and spouse David Pfleager and Anita and John Steele; great-grandchildren Austin and Alysha; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Pfleager on June 9, 1953, and Norman Skiver on Jan 7, 1986; one brother, John McMillen; and her sisters, Dorothy Worster and Mary Wimer.
Calling hours, followed by services, were at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury. Deacon Fred Schmitt officiated. Interment was in Trenton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Frances N. Slack
Frances N. Slack, 82, Mentor and formerly of Sunbury, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, in Altercare of Mentor in Mentor.
Slack, who was born May 17, 1920 in Youngstown, was the Deputy Clerk for the Mentor Municipal Court from 1977 until her retirement in 1983. Prior to that, she assisted her husband in operating William H. Slack Funeral Home from 1949 until 1961 in Sunbury.
She was a member of Mentor United Methodist Church, Mentor; a former member of Lake County Historical Society from 1965-77; Western Reserve, Geauga County, Wayne County and Morrow County societies; Order of the Eastern Star in Sunbury; former member of Quota Club and Mentor Women's Club; Who's Who of American Women 1975-76. She loved genealogy. She attended Bliss College (1937-39).
Slack is survived by daughters Susan K. (Charles) Horn of Mentor and Nancy Slack of Mentor; sons William Trenton (Roxanna) Slack of Fairfield and Robert J. (Roseann) Slack of Toledo; seven grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister Beatrice Stratton of Columbiana, Ohio; and brother John A. (Phyllis) Nees of Louisville, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Slack, whom she married on April 3, 1939. William was a funeral director with the Brunner Funeral Home in Mentor from 1963 until his death in 1980.
Services were held at Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Mentor. Interment was in Glendale Cemetery, Cardington.

Amelia Smith
Amelia Smith, 97, Sunbury and formerly of Blacklick, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at Morning View Care Center, Sunbury.
She was born Dec. 1, 1902, in Franklin County to the late Peter and Mary (Steltzer) Hartung.
She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Columbus until 1994 when she move to Sunbury. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Violet and Frank Peterfy, Sunbury; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Anita Smith Jr., Alexandria; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death in 1960 by her husband of 36 years, Paul L. Smith; and several brothers and sisters.
Private graveside funeral sesrvices were held at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, handled arrangements.
Ephriam E. Smith
The Rev. Ephriam E. Smith, 99, died Friday (March 31, 2000) at Southern Oaks Health Center, St. Cloud, Fla.
He was born March 22, 1901, Elliott County, Ky., to the late Morris R. and Mary C. (Rabb) Smith. On March 15, 1926, he married the former Emily E. Conn, now deceased.
He was a former resident of Karr Road, Jackson.
He is survived by two daughters, Glenna Jean Martin, Melbourne, Fla., and Alta Mae Presceno, Cocoa, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Myrtle Smith; two daughters-in-law, Shirley and Carolyn Smith; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Paul, Morris and William; seven brothers, Edward, Fred, John, Don, William, Herbert and Walter; five sisters, Beetha, Grace, Sarah Lillian and Lecta; and one granddaughter, Dewana Kay.
Calling hours were at Mayhew Funeral Home, 135 Broadway St., Jackson. Graveside services were at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Coalton, with the Rev. J.R. Smith officiating.
Ephriam E. Smith
Glenn Smith, 64, Sunbury, died at his home Monday evening (February 18, 2002) following an extended illness.
He was born on August 17, 1937 in Elliott County, Kentucky to the late Herbert and Maude Conn Smith. Glenn came to the Sunbury area in 1956 from Kentucky. He had worked for 20 years for the Galena Brick Company and 10 years for the former Nestle's Plant in Sunbury. He was a member of the Delaware Eagles.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 46 years, Roberta Carnell Smith, whom he married June 29, 1955 in Jacobs, Kentucky; a son, Robert (Penny) Smith of Sunbury; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Jeanie; a brother, Raymond (Alice) Smith of Richlands, Virginia; two sisters, Mary Benevento of West Berlin, New Jersey, and Ruby Rea of Baltimore, Maryland; and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Smith of Wascom, Texas, and Dee Smith of Sunbury.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Jack.
Friends called at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61, where funeral services will be held with Minister Frank Kirk officiating. Interment will follow in Trenton Cemetery.

Jack Smith
Jack B. Smith, 70, of Sunbury, died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville.
He was born on Oct. 7, 1929, to the late Herbert and Maude (Conn) Smith. Coming from Kentucky, Jack resided in Sunbury for 45 years. He had worked for the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Company and was retired from the maintenance department of the Galena Brick Company. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mona L. (McGlothlin) Smith; daughters Jeanie Paulette Squires of Chesterville, Brenda Marie Smith of Mt. Vernon, Shirley Lynn Smith of Sunbury, B. Lois Smith of Sparta, and Patricia Annett Smith of Prospect; sons Michael Jack Smith and Billy Joe Smith of Condit; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Glen and Roberta Smith of Sunbury and Raymond and Alice Smith of Richlands, Va.; and sisters Ruby Rea of Baltimore, Md., and Mary Benvento of New Jersey.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Lee Smith; a son, Johnny E. Smith; and brothers Kenneth and Billy Smith.
