Anne Marciniak
Anne (Niedenthal) Marciniak, a loyal Tribe fan, of Canton, passed away Monday morning with her loving family at her side. A loving mother to her five children and their spouses, Cindy (Robert) Dorety, Kim (Joe King) Janus, Jan (Bryan) Webler, Kevin (Laura) Marciniak and Lisa (Mark) Day; dearest grandmother of Sara, April, Hope, Shelby, Cody, Jessica, and Amy. Cherished sister of Gwen Bussinger; and loved by her many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, John; brothers, Bill, Norm, and Dick Niedenthal; and her sister, Mary Sis Thomas. Services will be Thursday at 12 Noon in the Schneeberger Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, John. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home.

Emma Mowls
Emma Emmy Broadwater Mowls, age 81, died Sunday morning at Windsor Medical Center. Born to Robert and Alice (Laughrey) Broadwater in McComb, OH., she grew up in the Fairmont Boulevard area of Canton. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1938. She married Herman Mowls in 1940 and together they lived in Georgia, Coshocton, Malvern and North Canton. Emmy sold baby clothing and children clothing for O'Neil's and Higbee's. Emmy was a member of First Christian Church and the Co-wed Sunday School Class and served as a greeter on Sundays and at the church pageants. Emmy hosted a Tender Loving Care group in her home. Emmy loved her home and family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Elwood, Herbert and Robert; and sister, Florence. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Herman of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jon Robertson of Malvern, OH., Sara and Robert Furey of Rochester Hills, MI; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Rose Mowls of Chagrin Falls, OH., Roy and Lisa Mowls of Monroe Falls, OH. Emma has ten grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. Her grandchildren said that Grandma does everything like it's a party. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church Memorial Chapel, 2600 Chapel Ave NW, with Rev. Manley C. Pierce and Rev. Peter Nathan officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends may call Wednesday 7-9 p.m. in the Karlo Sons Funeral Home and Thursday one hour before services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church.

Ethel Sue Buckland
Ethel Sue (Hewitt) Buckland, age 65, of Canton, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 in her home following an extended illness. She was a resident of Canton most of her life and was employed at Davis Cab for 40 years and retired from Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX in 1985. Preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John and George Hewitt. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Ed Bean of Walnut Bottom, PA, Patty Smith and Ron Pritchard of San Antonio, TX; two sons, Kevin Bobby Hewitt of Myrtle Beach, SC and David Hite of Canton; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Sandra Wiegel of Owosso, MI and Cheryl Irwin of Canton; one brother, Russell Cook of Canton; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loving friends. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Kreigbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Sandy Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the family.

Eunice H. Atkinson
Eunice H. Atkinson, age 82, of Louisville, loving mother and sister, passed away Monday, January 14, 2002 in the Green Meadows Care Center following a recent illness. Eunice was born March 12, 1919 in Louisville to the late Ward and Louise (Klopfenstine) Sluss. She was a former sales clerk for J.C. Penny. Eunice enjoyed sewing and was an avid gardener. She was a member of Paradise United Church of Christ in Louisville. Eunice leaves behind two sons, Don Atkinson of New York and Michael Atkinson of Louisville; two sisters, Susan Lively of Canton and Norma Smith of Louisville; three brothers, Bernard, John and Richard Sluss, all of Louisville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Atkinson; two sisters, Thelma Sluss and Ruth Hagerman; and two brothers, William and James Sluss. Funeral services for Eunice will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Paquelet-Falk Funeral Home in Louisville with Rev. John Bertsch officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Paradise United Church of Christ.

Grady W. Maze, Jr.
Grady W. Maze, Jr., age 49, of Canton, OH, died Jan. 5, 2002 in Petroleum, WV. He was born March 8, 1952 in Canton, the son of the late Grady W. and Donna Boswell Maze. Grady was a locomotive Crane Repairman with Republic Steel for 29 years and served in the U.S. Army with service in Vietnam and Europe. Survived by one son, Frank D. Maze, Sr. of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Gladys Vugrin and Shirley McNutt, both of Canton; one grandson, Frank D. Maze, Jr.; aunts and uncles, Marilee and Paul Reinhardt of Ludlow Falls, OH, Eugenia Maze and William and Judy Boswell, all of Canton, Richard and Sherry Boswell of Florida; one special niece, Stephanie; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by an uncle, Ralph Maze. Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Helen Mae Furney
Helen Mae (Brown) Furney. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Canton Baptist Temple with Dr. Harold Henniger and Rev. David Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Calling hours in the Reed Funeral Home Tuesday (today) 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.

Jennings Ford McGraw
Jennings Ford McGraw, age 74, formerly of Jackson Twp, died Sunday January 13, 2002. Born October 2, 1927 to the late Jennings and Myrtle McGraw in West Virginia. He moved to Canton in his teens and worked construction (mainly Hopple Bros. and Bernard Pipeline) He retired early to care for his ailing wife of 41 years Arlene (Gardner) McGraw who died in 1988. Also preceded in death by two sisters; two brothers; and step-daughter, Joann Armbrust. Survived by wife of 11 years, Carlyon (Carol) McGraw of West Virginia; son, Jay McGraw of Jackson Twp; daughter, Kathy Cain of N. Royalton; step daughter, Judy Armbrust of Canton; granddaughters, Veronica (Ronni) Barnhart of Georgia, Roberta (Bobbi) Sheaks of Canton and Miranda (Randi) Uber of Cleveland; great granddaughter, Sunshine (Sunni) Armbrust of Tennessee; great-grandsons, Joe Hileman of Malvern, Trent Sherrod of Canton; and great great granddaughter, Angelica-Sky (Gelli) Armbrust of Canton; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral will be Wednesday January 16, 2002 at 2 p.m. with calling hours two hours prior at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer, West Virginia.

Lawrence L. Garcia
Lawrence L. Garcia, age 77, of Massillon, died Friday afternoon in Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Niagra Falls, NY, to his parents, the late Raymond and Pura Garcia. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and served as an air traffic controller and sharp shooter. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from Akron University and was employed as a training supervisor for the Timken Company for 33 years, retiring in 1985. Mr. Garcia was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and McKinley Eagles Lodge #2370. He was an avid bowler and golfer and recorded two holes-in-one after his 70th birthday. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Mr. Garcia is survived by his son, Troy Garcia of Massillon; daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and David DuPlaine of Massillon; grandson, Noah Garcia; stepson, John Williams of Pittsburgh, PA; and stepdaughter, Cheryl MacIntyre of Seville, OH; two sisters, Bea Lombardi of Massillon and Olga Lombardi of Lewiston, NY; numerous nices, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Michaels Church with Rev. Father Joseph Zamary officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours were Monday 7-9 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home.

Mary Ethel Dunlap
Mary Ethel Dunlap. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday (tonight) at 7 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Chaplain Ron Iwanusa officiating where calling hours will be held one hour prior to services, 6-7 p.m. Eastern Star services will be held at 6:45 p.m. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Longview Cemetery in Bowerston, OH.

Mary I. Sherer
Mary I. Sherer, 90, of Tuscarawas, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at New Dawn Health Care Center in Dover following a brief illness. Born in Warwick Township, she was the daughter of the late Adam H. and Emma Baker Boltz. She was a 1929 graduate of the former Tuscarawas Warwick High School and had attended the Ohio State University. Mary was a member of the Sharon Moravian Church in Tuscarawas where she had served as a church elder and was a member of the Sunshine Circle. She was an avid reader and a member of the Tuscarawas Library Book Club and also served as a former member of the Tuscarawas County Board of Education. Her husband, the late Cloyd B. Sherer preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis M. Ronald of New Philadelphia and Dawn M. Bazler of San Gabriel, California; a son, Kenneth L. (Christine) Sherer of Canton; nine grandchildren, Shelley (Dean) Wehr, Kim (B. David) Smith, Bruce R. Ronald, Brenton R. (Sally) Ronald, Kenneth C. Sherer, Allison Sherer, Brandi (Scott) Wolchko, Brendan Bazler and Corbett Bazler. A brother is deceased. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 17, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sharon Moravian Church in Tuscarawas with Rev. Michael Foran officiating. Burial will be at Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery in Tuscarawas. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2002, 5-8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia. Nelson W. Hawk
Nelson W. Hawk, age 82, of East Canton, passed away Friday, January 11, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center. He was retired from Republic Steel. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Canton; and was a World War II Veteran. Nelson was an avid bowler and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents and a close friend, Arlene Fiscus. He is survived by many friends. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Stier-Israel Funeral Home of Louisville with Rev. William Seymour III officiating. Friends may call one hour before the services at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mapleton Cemetery.

Ova L. Swiney
Ova L. Swiney, age 86, formerly of Canton and more recently of Clendenin, WV, died Saturday. Born December 13, 1915, in Clio, WV, to the late William and Edith Abbott. She was a former employee of the QP Restaurant and was of Baptist faith. Preceded in death by one son, David K. Swiney, Sr., and two brothers, Leslie and Opie Abbott. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and George Bruggner of Peoria, AZ; one son, Kenneth Walker; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline and Jack Parker, Imogene Sloan, Irene and Charles Briesenbine, all of Clio, WV, and Betty Bierwirth of Huntington Beach, CA; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Abbott of East Canton, OH, Clyde and Lecta Abbott of Clendenin, WV, and Richard and Cleo Abbott of Charleston, WV; four grandchildren, Gena Schank of Canton, Kimberly Collaso of Ohio, Stephanie Somers of Canton and David Swiney, Jr. of Bolivar, OH; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Henniger officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Patricia B. Albright
Patricia B. Albright, age 78, of Gnadenhutten, OH, died Sunday in Alterra Health Care at New Philadelphia following a lengthy illness. She was born October 27, 1922, in Folkstone, England, a daughter of the late Cecil G. and Helen B. (Hardy) Cornes. She was a member of the Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church and the choir. She had been a legal secretary for many years and local librarian for several years. She loved sewing, knitting, reading, gardening, playing games with her grandchildren and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. She is survived by five children, Geoffrey and Kathy Albright of Dover, Michael and Shirley Albright of California, John and Kathy Albright of Canton, Carolyn and William King of Gnadenhutten and Anne and Michael Toth of Dover; eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death on Dec. 5, 1990, by her husband, Walter J. Albright whom she joined in marriage Nov. 6, 1943. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dorothy Penny-Larter officiating. Burial will be in Gnadenhutten Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, (tonight) in the Gowins Funeral Home at Gnadenhutten, 6-9 p.m.

Richard Sherman Jr.
Richard Levon Dick Sherman Jr., age 69, of Uniontown, OH, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2002, at Canton Mercy Medical. Mr. Sherman was born Dec. 17, 1932, in Marion, OH, living in the Mansfield area most of his life until moving to Uniontown one year ago. He retired from General Motors as a general foreman after 32 1/2 years. He graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Sherman was a life member and past commander of Am Vets #26, a member of Baggy Sacks #17, the Leiderkranz, Louisville Eagles #2374, Mogadore Moose Chapter #852, Venus Masonic Lodge, and Ontario VFW. He was a member of Fun Center Chordsman, Home Edition Barber Shop for 12 years, Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, and Ancient and Harmonious Society of Woodshedders. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force enlisting June 29, 1951, stationed in Alaska as a Cryptonalyst, and discharged May 3, 1955. He is survived by his beloved wife of 22 1/2 years, Millie Tharp Sherman; two sons and daughters-in-law, Noel and Lynn Sherman of Lexington and Doug and Teresa Sherman of Galion; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marty K. and Mike Stroup of Ontario and Dietra Sherman of Lexington; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sandra Tharp of City of Green, OH; a stepdaughter, Sherry Tharp Cunningham of Akron, OH; six grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Kenneth Ewers of Burbank, IL; a nephew, Jeff Sherman of Marion, OH; a sister-in-law, Gloria Sherman of Marion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Levon Sherman Sr., Feb. 2, 1978 and Eva Mary (James) Sherman, March 31, 2001; a brother, Robert Eugene Sherman, Aug. 2, 1987; a sister, Naomi Kay Sherman, April 4, 1945; a stepdaughter, Patricia Chaney Best Schupback May, July 13, 1995. Russell E. Pfau
Russell E. Pfau, age 74, of Canton, died Saturday in Mercy Medical Center. Mr. Pfau was a life resident of Canton. A graduate of McKinley High School, retired in 1968 from the Timken Company with 35 years of service and was a veteran of World War II. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bernice Pfau; two sisters, Mary Unsworth and Dorothy Pfau; and three brothers, William, Robert and Donald Pfau. Survivors include two sisters, Betty Hutter of Akron, OH and Elma Richards of Canton, OH; niece, Joyce Swoveland of Canton, OH; nephew, William Richards of Malvern, OH; two sisters-in-law, Fran Marrow of Kentucky and Sue Pfau of Magnolia, OH; many nieces and nephews and friends. Vivian B. Kelly
Vivian B. Kelly, beloved wife and mother went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 following a brief illness. Born Jan. 15, 1927. Vivian graduated from Glouster High School in Athens County before coming to Canton, where she was united in marriage to John R. Kelly. Vivian was employed at the Parisian Co., retiring after more than 30 years. And was a member of the Valley Chapel Brethren in Christ Church in East Canton. Preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Annette Kelly; parents, Garnetta and Clyde Mitchell and Bethel Mayle; mother-in-law, Inez Kelly; father-in-law, Royal Kelly; and one brother, James Hill. Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, John R. Kelly; two sons, Clyde B. Kelly of Milwaukee, WI, Curtis (Lynette) Freeman of Arlington, VA; five daughters, Cynthia (Paul) Hilliard of Pasco, WA, Diane (Lee) Wolf of Atlanta, GA, Elaine (James) Randle of Canton, Deborah Kelly of Canton, Royann (Rodney) Jackson of Columbus, OH; 13 grandchildren; great-seven grandchildren; one sister, Charlene (Richard) Colley of Canton; one sister-in-law, Irene Simmons of Malvern; two cousins, Cinderella Bessick of Canton, Harry Mitchell of Ft. Wayne, IN; one very special friend of 50 years, Mrs. Mildred Pryor of Malvern, OH; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones including her Valley Chapel friends in Christ. Lillie B. Laughlin
Lillie B. Laughlin, age 92, of Hartville went home to be with the Lord, Monday morning, January 14, 2002 in Altercare of Hartville, three months short of her 93rd birthday. She was born in Calhoun County, WV on April 12, 1909 to the late Earl and Roxanne (Suttle) Walker and moved to Ohio in the 1940's. She had worked for Goodyear and Lawsons. Preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1982; and seven brothers and sisters, Virgil, Orvil, Jimmy, Margaret, Mabel, Flo, and Lucille. Survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ted Owens of Akron; sons and daughter-in-law, Raymond Jr. of Canton, Burton of Hartville and Kenneth and Norma of Mogadore; adopted son, Steven of Hartville; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Friends may call Wednesday 4-7:00 PM in the Arnold Funeral Home Hartville. Funeral Services will be held Friday 11:00 AM with calling hours 10-11:00 AM in the Beech Church close to Spencer, WV with Pastor Leon Strickland officiating. Final Resting Place is Bailey Cemetery.

Jack LeRoy Drake
Jack LeRoy Drake, age 67, of Canton, died Sunday morning in the home following an extended illness. Born December 25, 1934 in Moundsville, WV to the late William and Estella Drake. He retired from the Akro Rubber Co. in 1994 after 40 years of service. Preceded in death by one brother, William Drake and one sister, Florence Drake. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home with whom he celebrated 46 years of marriage on August 6, 2001; two daughters and son-in-law, Patricia and Dale Jett of Ohio and Brenda Bordon of Lake, Florida; two grandchildren, Brooke Bordon of Florida and Brandi Sharpe of the home; two brothers, Ronald Drake of Pennsylvania and James Drake of Cameron, WV; one sister, Norma Newman of Cameron, WV; and his dear and protecting dog, Candy. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. James Black officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.
