Alton J. Ferguson
Alton J. Fergy Ferguson, age 76 of Canton, died Sunday morning in Aultman Hospital following a sudden illness. Son of the late Alton Sam and Jessie (Hunt) Ferguson. He was a Canton area resident for the past 45 years, retiring from Babcock Wilcox in 1983 after 32 years of service. Member of the Full Gospel Lighthouse Church where he was very active and served as an elder and board member. Member of the Atwood Beagle Club and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was the former president of the United Steel Workers Union Local #92. He was a WWII and Korean War Veteran serving with the Marine Corp. He is also preceded in death by two infant sons, Larry Gene and Jonathon Wayne Ferguson; one sister, Ruth Spencer. He is survived by his wife, Ila Fern (Garner) to whom he was married 57 years; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bob Ferguson of Canton, Joe and Hollie Ferguson of Canton; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Alice Lyons of East Liverpool. Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Full Gospel Lighthouse Church with Rev. Gary J. Ferguson and Rev. Thomas L. Dooley officiating. Interment in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Stillwater, OH. Carolyn S. Goodlet
Carolyn S. Goodlet, age 58, passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family Saturday afternoon January 19, 2002. Born July 4, 1943 in Yorktown, VA. Carolyn has been a Hartville resident since 1978 until recently moving to North Canton. Member of Marlboro Christian Church. She attended Kentucky Christian College in Grayson, KY., where she met her husband. Survived by her husband, C. Richard Goodlet; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kari and Craig Wentling of Brewster, OH., Cindi and Steve Perry of Lynchburg, VA; son, Christopher Goodlet currently attending Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA; and special sons, Guy Hall of Marlboro and John Kelley of Hartville; her parents, Charles and Mildred (Overby) Shelton of Newport News, VA; two sisters, and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Mickey Neill of Yorktown, VA., Phyllis and Roane Hunt of Gloucester, VA; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Martin and Kay Shelton of Williamsburg, VA., Carl and Fran Shelton of Newport, VA., Wayne and Susan Shelton of Yorktown, VA; adopted sister, Brenda Moffitt of Williamsburg, VA; four grandchildren, Sophie Wentling, Faith, Ben, and Esther Perry; and numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn F. Blume, age 88, of North Canton, OH., died Friday in St. Luke Lutheran Home after a brief illness. Born in Cleveland, OH., she had lived in Brunswick, OH., until moving to North Canton, OH., in 1997. Preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Blume in 1992; a sister, Irene Hill; a brother, Fred Hill; and a niece, Janice Kowalski. Survived by a sister, Violet Majorossy of North Canton; two great nieces, Grace Wakulchik of North Canton, Mary Hickerson and her husband, John of Overland Park, KS; great nephew, Robert Kowalski and his wife, Jane of Temperence, MI; nephew-in-law, Rev. Dr. Ronald Kowalski and his wife, Martha of Longmont, CO; and eight great great nieces and great great nephews, Anna, Carolyn, Stephen, and Matthew Wakulchik, Elise and Sean Hickerson, Janice and Robert Kowalski. JacK Dempsey Jones, 74, of Canton, passed away Saturday January 19, 2002 in Aultman Hospital. Born in Canton, the son of the late, Daniel and May Jones. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and retired from Republic Steel in 1988. A life time resident of Canton, member of the American Legion and the Eagles Club. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary in October 2000; one son, Terry Lee Jones. Survived by four sons, Jack C. Michael B., Mark F., and James A. all of Canton; two daughters, Mary Louise Host and Mrs. Carl ( Kelly) Host both of Canton; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. Lee D. Brown
Lee D. Brown, age 77, of East Sparta, passed away Sunday morning in Aultman Hospital. He was born in East Sparta, a son of the late Clifford and Arlene McKinney Brown, and was a life resident. He retired in 1985 from the U.S. Ceramic Tile Co. in East Sparta, after 36 years service, where he had been Plant Manager and head of Quality Control. Mr. Brown was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sandyville; a 50 year member of Caldwell Lodge #330, F A.M. in Bolivar; also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton; the National Association. of P-38 Pilots; and the Friends of the U.S. Air Force through the Air Force Museum at Dayton, OH. He was a member and had served as Commander for 20 years of Isaac L. Kinney American Legion Post #244 in East Sparta, and also a member of New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp Photo Reconnaissance in the South Pacific during WWII in 1945-46. Preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lois Kennedy. Survived by his wife, Grace M. Brown, with whom he celebrated their 54th Wedding Anniversary on June 7, 2001; four daughters and a son-in-law, Alexa Dazey of Magnolia, Kathie and Timothy Hutchison of Jamestown, PA., Judy Greene of N. Carl J. Busch
Carl J. Busch, age 79, of Alliance, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the home following an extended illness. He was born in Bellaire, OH, on Aug. 20, 1922. He was a retired veterinarian, 1950-1989, and was former owner of Tri-County Veterinarian Hospital. Member of First United Presbyterian Church and was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps as a radar operator. Graduate of Bellaire High School, Air Corps, attended Mt. Union College in Pre-Vet, graduate of Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1950. Member of Homeworth Lions, Conrad Lodge #271, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, Tadmore Shrine, Alliance Shrine Club Transportation Unit. Preceded in death by his parents, Carl F.W. Busch and Margaret (Hunter) Busch; son, William F. Busch in 1995; brother, William F. Busch. Survived by his wife, Barbara F. (Firestone) Busch of Alliance; daughter, Kathy J. Mirakovits of Portage, MI; son, James R. Busch of Columbus, OH; six grandchildren. Catherine Marie Ditmore, age 45, of Canton, died unexpectedly Tuesday in the home. Born July 6, 1956 in Hiawassee, GA. She was a former employee of the Whippledale Workshop and was active with the Special Olympics. Preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Bernice Wheeler; paternal grandparents, Henry and Gertrude Ditmore. Survivors include her father, Clay Ditmore; mother and step-father, Betty and Randy Bechtel; one brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Debra Ditmore, all of Canton; one sister and brother-in-law, Susan (Ditmore) and Paul Knott with home she resided; nephews and niece, Matthew and Lauren Ditmore and Even Knott; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Catherine had many friends and touched the lives of many people. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Howard officiating. Emily E. Phillips, age 88, of Canton, passed away Saturday evening in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Hawley, PA, on April 2, 1913 she was the daughter of the late, Harry A. and Catherine Sommerville. She was a member of the Berean Christadelphians. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William Whitehouse Phillips who passed away October 29, 2001; also by her stepmother, Margaret E. Sommerville; and two brothers, John and Robert Sommerville. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Harry T. and Phyllis Phillips of Bolivar, OH., Williams R. and Eleanor Phillips of Wellington, New Zealand, and John C. and Mary Phillips of Canton. There are four grandchildren, Elizabeth Male, Michael, Matthew and Letisha Phillips; one brother, David Sommerville of Northboro, Massillon. Francis E. Godfrey
Francis E. Fran Godfrey, age 45, of Alliance, passed away unexpectedly on Friday January 18, 2002. He was born in Alliance on December 2, 1956 to the late Robert and Eva (Mulinix) Godfrey, attended Alliance High School, and prior to disability had been a press operator for Alliance Steel. He was always smiling and was a free spirit. Preceded in death by his sister, Judith Metze, and brothers, Robert Thomas Tor Godfrey and James Godfrey. Survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene Godfrey of Alliance, Eva Mann of Canton, Rosemarie and David Bradley of Cameron, WV, Susette and Keith McCord and Michele and Norman Bickley all of Alliance; brother, Arthur Godfrey of Alliance; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. George L. Deal
George L. Deal, passed away unexpectedly at the Arbors of Canton on Saturday, January 19, 2002, following a brief illness. Born in 1914, he was a Canton resident all his life.
Mr. Deal was preceded in death by his parents, Alva L. and Luella R. Deal; his first wife, Harrietta Smith; and his second wife, Eleanor Graham. Mr. Deal graduated from McKinley High School, Oberlin College, The Harvard Business School and The William McKinley School of Law. He was employed by the Timken Company from 1936 until his retirement from the position of Vice President, Finance in 1974. He also served on the Timken Company's Board of Directors. Very active in community affairs, Mr. Deal served as the General Chairman of both the 1966 United Fund Campaign and the 1975 Cultural Center for the Arts United Arts Fund Campaign. In 1973 he received the greater Canton Chamber of Commerce Award of Merit. A member of The Stark County Community Foundation, The Stark County Historical Society, Brookside Country Club, The Avondale Community Improvement Association and numerous other community organizations. Mr. Deal also worked tirelessly in support of the McKinley Museum. At the time of his death, he was President of the Canton Cemetery Association. Mr. Deal attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George L. Jr. and Rebecca M. Deal; his brother, James R. Deal; his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth D. and Theodore E. Blohm all of Canton; and two nieces, Barbara Van Horn of Canton and Cassandra Pasko of Akron. A private service was held by the family at Spiker-Foster-SHRIVER Funeral Home on January 22, 2002. There were no calling hours. Entombment will be in the North Lawn Chapel Mausoleum. Gerald E. Palmer
Gerald E. Palmer, age 98, of Chapel Hill Community Nursing Home, Canal Fulton, formerly of Cadillac Drive in Boardman, died Friday afternoon, January 18th at the center. Mr. Palmer was born on April 3, 1903 in Allen County, IN, the son of John F. and Caroline Conine Palmer. He graduated from Indiana University and moved to the Youngstown area in 1930. He was a school teacher with the Youngstown Board of Education for 42 years, retiring in 1966. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he taught Sunday School and belonged to the XYZ Club. He was a member of the Latin Club with the Youngstown Schools. His wife, of 76 years the former Elva I. Hopkins, whom he married on September 13, 1924, died June 16, 2001. He leaves his son an daughter-in-law, John and Donna Palmer of Canton, OH; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Oliver Thomas of Bloomington, MN; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Palmer. Private Services were held Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, Boardman. There were no calling hours. The family request that material contributions take the form of donations to Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman, OH 44512. Jerome T. Peters
Jerome (Jerry) T. Peters, age 56, of Massillon, passed away Monday, January 21, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born in Massillon on January 25, 1945 to the late August John and Eva (Eckroate) Peters. He had worked at Republic Steel as a millwright. He was a member of St. Phillips James in Canal Fulton, Sons of Herman, and was a musician in the Massillon and Canton area for 35 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Albert Peters; and sisters, Mary Catherine Peters and Evelyn DeRush. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kay (Marks) Peters of the residence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Wendy Peters and Kevin and Carrie Peters both of Massillon; grandson, Kyle Peters of Massillon; sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Dale Rohr of Canal Fulton; brother and sister-in-law, Richard A. and Dorothy Peters of Massillon; brother-in-law, Ray Marks of North Canton along with many numerous nieces, nephews and very special friends. A Mass of Chrisitan will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Phillips James Catholic Church. Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home. Linda K. Shepherd, age 55, of Waynesburg, died Sunday evening in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born Dec. 18, 1946, in Canton, to the late Harold and Margaret Mackey. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carole S. Lidderdale. Survivors include her husband, Ronald of the home; one son, Michael Pucci of Waynesburg; three daughters and son-in-law, Lori Pucci of Magnolia, Vicki and Daniel May of Canton, Leighann Wells of Waynesburg; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Jim Starkey of North Carolina and Jill and Mark Ott of Massillon; nine grandchildren; one sister, Marianne Reiter of Canton. Mabel D. Krauter
Mabel D. Krauter, age 99, died Sunday night in the Inn at Belden Village. Born in Monroe County, OH., to the late Sanford and Ella (Yaussy) Fraley, she had lived most of her life in Bucyrus, OH., moving here six months ago. Preceded in death by her husband, Paul Krauter, who died in 1976; and two sisters, Etta (Fraley) Roth and Selma (Fraley) Krauter. Survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Shirley Krauter of Scotia, NY, Dean and Marilyn Krauter of Canton; Kenneth and Sally Krauter of Truckee, CA; a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Joe Oppenlander of Shelburne, VT; a sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Walter Marty of Monroe County, OH; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Martha Ann Norcia
Martha Ann (Drakulich) Norcia, of Lake Placid, passed away Sunday at her home. She was born in Stark County, OH, and had been a resident of Lake Placid since 1999 coming from Cooper City, Florida, were she had resided from 1969. She was a homemaker and Catholic by faith. She is survived by her husband, Richard Norcia of Lake Placid and her children, Deborah Paschal of Coral Springs, Mark Norcia of Ft. Lauderdale, Michael Norcia of Tennessee and Nicholas Norica of Davie, FL; three sisters, Della Hendershot of Eustice, FL, Mary Jensen and Violet Jensen both of Ohio; and six grandchildren. Mary Alice Rubel
Mary Alice Rubel, age 96 of Canton, OH, passed away Monday evening in the Hanover House following an extended illness. Born in Barnesville, OH., on May 15, 1905, she was a former employee of the Westside Curtain Laundry in Canton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis D. and Edwina Rubel; also by six sisters, Grace G. Schwartz, Mildred Haymaker, Viola Morrison, Amy Wilson, Dorothy Shook and Rose Barnes; and four brothers, Ben, George, Sam and Mancel Rubel. Survivors include two nephews and their spouses, Ralph R. and Genny Schwartz of Leetonia, OH, and Donald G. and Ginger Schwartz of Canton. There are several other nieces and nephews surviving. Private services and burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Tucker officiating. Mary Jane Elizabeth Cantrell, formerly of Navarre, OH, and since 1980 has been residing in Bonita Springs, FL, passed away suddenly Saturday morning at the home. Born in Canton she was the daughter of the late, Michael and Mary Lombardi. She was a retired employee of Ekco Housewares in Canton retiring in 1980 after 19 years of service. She was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple, the Canton Chapter #190 Order of Eastern Star and she received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Bonita Springs Lions Club. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Lombardi. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Weldon M. Cantrell of the home; her son and daughter-in-law, Jerome Jerry and Pat Cantrell of Carrollton, OH; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michele and James Watson of Ruckersville, VA, and Carol and Floyd Cross of Navarre, OH; one sister, Nancy and Edwin Krumm of Canal Fulton, OH; three grandchildren, Amy, Amanda and Adam, and one great-grandson, Seth; also by an aunt and several nieces and nephews. Paul Egri, age 87, of Canton, OH, passed away Sunday afternoon in the Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Austria-Hungary on August 24, 1914, he was a retired self-employed photographer. He attended St. Paul's Catholic Church in Canton. Survivors include his wife, Anna Egri of the home; two sons, Gary and Paul Egri, both of Pittsburgh, PA; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two stepchildren. John Lovaty and Delores Brahler both of Canton; six step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours or services. His wishes were to be cremated and his cremains will be buried in the Smithfield Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA. The Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pearl Kreighbaum
Pearl M. Kreighbaum, age 89, of Canton, died Monday evening in the Canton Christian Home following an extended illness. Daughter of the late Preston T. and Ella M. (Motz) Griffeth, she and her husband, John H. Kreighbaum, were the former owner-operators of the Kreighbaum Funeral Home. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Pike Grange, Canton South Women's Club and the Order of Eastern Star Delta Chapter #539. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John H. Kreighbaum, in 1969; two sisters, Genova Griffeth and Mary Yoder; two brothers, William and Forest Griffeth. She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Harry (Mary Jane) Peterson of River Forest, IL, Mrs. Robert (Virginia) Marthey of Applecreek, OH; one nephew, Rev. William J. Yoder of Chaing Mai, Thailand; also great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday at 4 p.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. with Rev. Carolyn Griffeth officiating. Interment in the Sandy Valley Cemetery, where there will be a private graveside service for the family on Saturday. Rev. Paul L. Mohler
Rev. Paul L. Mohler, age 91, of St. Johns Street, Grafton, WV., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom he served faithfully for 60 years on Monday, January 21, 2002 at the WVU Hospital Morgantown, WV. He was born on November 16, 1910 in Middlebranch, OH., a son of the late Frank E. Mohler and Katherine (Ebie) Mohler. Rev. Mohler was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanette Louise (Werner) Mohler who passed away on November 16, 1978. Surviving are one son, Nathanael H. Mohler and wife, Carol Mohler of North Canton, OH; one son-in-law, Darrell Stewart of Friendsville, MD; one grandson, Jeffrey Mohler; three granddaughters, Donna, Dana, and Jewelie; five great grandchildren, Rachel, Jessica, Chaunte, Christopher, and Ryan; one sister, Myrtle Haldeman of Canton, OH. Rev. Mohler was preceded in death by three children, Tessie Lou Mohler, Rebekah Stewart, and Matthew Bryan Mohler; two brothers, Ned Mohler and Hubert Mohler; one sister, Goldie Kinsley. Rev. Mohler was retired from the First Grace Brethren Ministerium was a member of the First Grace Brethren Church of Grafton and also a member of the Association of Grace Brethren Ministries. Funeral services will be conducted at the Middlebranch Grace Brethren Church on Friday January 25, 2002 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeffrey Mohler officiating. interment in the Warstler Cemetery in Middlebranch, OH. Viewing for Rev. Mohler will be from 12 Noon to 1 p.m. at the church.
Viola M. Haag
Viola M. Haag, age 84, of Massillon, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Meadow Wind Health Care Center, after a lengthy illness. She was born October 2, 1917, in Newcomerstown, OH, and had lived in Massillon most of her life. She was a homemaker, and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the Altar/Rosary Society, and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers at St. Joseph's. She is survived by one son, Harold Haag, Jr. of New Philadelphia, OH; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and James Weiss of Hermosa Beach, CA, and Sue and Brent Burton of Canton; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Haag in 1985; her parents, Ira and Mary (Knopf) Eagon; and one brother, Donald Eagon. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Paul officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Massillon. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Heitger Funeral Service - Massillon Chapel, where a scriptural service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to Mercy Medical Center Hospice, 1320 Mercy Dr. NW, Canton, OH 44799.
Virginia (Ginger) Franta
Virginia (Ginger) Franta, age 77, of N. Canton, died Tuesday in Mercy Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Gary, IN, she had been a Canton area resident most of her life. She had formerly been employed by the Stern Mann Co. and at Ohio Bell as a service representative. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where she served as a greeter. Ginger was an avid tennis player, and was an expert skier. She enjoyed skiing in Colorado. She spent many happy hours working with her beautiful stitchery. She was an inspirational and active partner with her artist husband, Tom, in his water color business. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Valerie Franta, a son, Maurice Franta, her parents, Ralph and Ethel Cropley, and two brothers, William and Robert Cropley. Survived by her husband, Thomas J. Franta, of the home; a grandson, Robert (Rob) Clow of Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Dick Halteman of N. Canton; a sister-in-law, Jane Cropley of N. Canton; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Marge Franta of Canton, and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Zamary as Celebrant. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home and on Friday from 9-10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Michael's Church.
