Betty Eckstein
Betty Eckstein, passed away on October 1, 2002 at 7:40 a.m. She had been a teacher in the North Canton and Plain Local School Districts for thirty years. She is survived by her husband, Robert to whom she was wed for 53 years; two daughters, Jean (Thomas) Sawyer of Idaho and Barbara Eckstein, Ph.D, of Iowa; three grandchildren, Robert (Pam) Sawyer, Eric Sawyer and Zoe Eckstein; three brothers, William Triner, James (Roseann) Triner of Massillon and Robert (Jean) Triner of Canton; four sisters, Martha (James) Crawford, Nancy (James) Weber, Jane (Douglas) Brediger and Susan Triner, all of Massillon; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Jane (Louis) Dauterman of North Canton. There will be no calling hours or public service. If you wish, contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or Aultman Hospice.

Celestia M. Williams
Celestia M. Williams, age 75, a resident of Mayfield Manor, passed away Wednesday morning in Altercare of Canton. She was born in Canton, a daughter of the late Howard and Daphine Wisler Eckerman, and was a life resident. Mrs. Williams was a 1945 graduate of Timken Vocational High School and was retired from Rite Aid Pharmacy, where she was a clerk. She was a member of Canton Central Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Martha Evans and Ruth and Tracy Traugott, all of Canton; one son, David Williams of North Canton; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home. Interment in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. Contributions in Mrs. Williams memory may be made to the Canton Central Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Don S. Heidy
Don S. Heidy, age 87, of the New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover, and a former Dellroy resident, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 1, 2002 in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness. He retire in 1980 from the former White Motors in Canton and had previously worked for many years at the former Whitacre-Greer Co. in Magnolia. He was born Dec. 31, 1914 in Dellroy and was the son of the late Elmer Stocking and Mary Olive Slates Heidy. Don was a member of the Christ Community Church in Dellroy and a 1932 graduate of the former Dellroy High School. Don had an appreciation for the outdoors, and as a result, was an avid fisherman, loved to go hunting, was a camping enthusiast and enjoy the game of golf. He was a handyman who could repair virtually anything. Blessed with a marvelous sense of humor, he loved to play euchre with his friends and cherished the company of his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Wetzel Heidy, who died June 10, 1993; also preceded in death by two brothers, Doyle and Ralph Heidy; a sister, Nora Thorley; grandson; a great-grandson. Survived by three daughters, Mrs. William (Nancy) Aston of Sherrodsville, Mrs. Gary (Donna) Hall of Dellroy, Mrs. Carolyn Grasselli of New Philadelphia; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren. In accordance with Don's wishes, the body has been cremated and a memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Christ Community Church at Dellroy with Pastor Ron silver and Rev. Rick Chappell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Interment of ashes will occur at a later date in the Leavittsville Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville is handling arrangements.

F. Tracy Sullivan
Francis Tracy Sullivan, age 77, of Canton, passed away Tuesday after a brief illness. Born in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Crockett) Sullivan, He was a retired business machine technician. Memberships include Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus, Council #341. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Sullivan in 1988. Survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends will be received Thursday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. in the Schneeberger Funeral Home.

Harry C. Creager
Harry C. Creager. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Calling hours in the funeral home Thursday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Savior United Methodist Church or to the Wilderness Center.

Helen J. Wellman
Helen J. Wellman-Shearer, age 87, of Canton, passed away October 1, 2002. She is survived three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Richard and Lisa Wellman; and two great-grandchildren. Helen will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Irene L. Purdy
Irene L. Purdy. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Fri. Oct. 4, in the chapel. of the Canton Christian Home with Rev. Robert Walther and Chaplain Ron Iwanusa officiating. Arrangements by the Reed Funeral Home.

Jean R. Grace
Jean R. Grace, age 87, went to be with the Lord, October 1, 2002. A homemaker and area resident most of her life, she was a graduate of Kent State University and was a member of Queen of Heaven Church and North Canton Elks. She enjoyed sports and was an avid Bridge player. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; brothers, Jack Raupple and Dr. Carl Raupple; grandson, Kevin Grace; and great-granddaughter, Gabriele Grace. She is survived by her children, Philip (Marian), Jeanne Grace, James (Lette), Marianne (Fredrick) Sullivan and Robert (Mary Beth); 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hecker Funeral Home in Uniontown. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Church, Father David Durkee, Celebrant. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Summit County.

Lillian Edith Allmon
Lillian Edith Allmon, age 81, of Thomas Ave. NW, Carrollton, Ohio, died in her residence Monday, September 30, 2002. She was born on June 18, 1921, in Conneaut, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late John and Emma (Ericson) Rintanen. Lillian was married on November 4, 1944, to William Thomas Allmon who died on January 30, 2002. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carrollton, where she was a former Sunday School teacher; a charter member of the Carrollton Chapter of the Child Conservation League. She was valedictorian of her class in 1939 at Conneaut High School; and she completed Erie Business College. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Allmon, Veterinarian in Chardon, Ohio, Thomas Allmon, a family physician, and Beverly Burke of West Linn, Oregon; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Stoneham, an attorney, and Bill Stoneham both of Carrollton; one sister, Edna Kieser of Vinton, VA; three grandsons and one granddaughter, Jesse Burke-Allmon, Dylan Burke-Allmon, Ethan Stoneham, and Maureen Stoneham. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edwin Rintanen; two brothers-in-law, Gerald B. Allmon and Ralph Kieser. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Carrollton with Dr. Charles Naylor and Rev. Mark Statler officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery. Calling hours will be observed at the First United Methodist Church from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church. William T. Allmon Scholarship Fund, Carroll County Hospice or the Carroll County Visiting Nurses. Allmon-Dugger Hively Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Martha Baughman
Mary Martha Baughman, age 84, of Massillon, passed away Tuesday afternoon in Windsor Medical Center. She was born in Canton, a daughter of the late Gus and Martha Bowers Naylor, and was a life resident of this area. She attended McKinley High School. Mrs. Baughman had been a telephone operator at both Aultman Hospital and Union Metal Mfg. Co. Preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Edgar B. Baughman, on April 27, 1994, and a brother, James Naylor. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Richard Hammerly, and Chris and James Bednar, all of North Canton; six grandchildren, Tamara, Ryan and Aaron Brozovic, Laura Rose and her husband Randy, James Bednar, Jr. and Jason Bednar and his wife, Suzy; seven great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home with Rev. Larry F. Morrison officiating. Entombment in North Lawn Mausoleum. Friends may call Friday 6-8 p.m. and Saturday 10-11 a.m. Contributions in Mrs. Baughman's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Maureen B. Burchell
Maureen Beth Burchell. Services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia. Friends may call Thursday (Tonight) 6-9 p.m. and Friday 10-10:30 a.m.

Mrs. Gladys Seale
Mrs. Gladys Berrong Seale, age 76, of Hiawassee, GA, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 2, 2002. She was a at Mt. View Community Living Center in Clayton, GA. Mrs. Seale was born and raised in Hiawassee, she returned here in 1978, after spending 32 years in Canton, Ohio. Gladys was a daughter of the late Sanford and Anna (Eller) Berrong. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Howard Seale of Hiawassee, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Shari and Frank Allen of Canton, OH; two grandchildren, Michele Janice Hensley of Hiawassee, GA and Michael Howard Hensley of Hiawassee, GA; two brothers, Wayne and Donnie Berrong of Hiawassee, GA and Edwin and Monita Berrong of Hiawassee, GA; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 4, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Upper Hightower Baptist Church with Rev. Dwayne Beck and Rev. Glen Eller officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Upper Hightower Baptist Church Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m. Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee, GA in charge of arrangements.

Vera F. Glodde
Vera Frances Glodde, age 76, a resident of Green Meadows Health Wellness Center, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 in Mercy Hospital. Born in Union, ME, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Carrie Tolman. She was a homemaker all of her life. Preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Glodde. Services will be held Friday at 11 am. in the Earl B. Jack Funeral Home. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Virginia M. Gribbin
Virginia M. Gribbin, age 81, of Canton, passed away Tuesday evening in Aultman Hospital. She was born in Jamestown, NY, a daughter of the late Richard and Esther Widholm Field, and had been a Canton resident since 1954. Mrs. Gribbin was retired from Mercy Medical Center where she was a Registered Nurse. Survived by her husband of 51 years, John H. Gribbin; one daughter, Lucinda Ludwig, of Canoga Park, CA; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Vinton and Beth Ludwig, of Santa Ana, CA and Michael Gribbin, of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Mrs. Eleanor Sundquist, of Jamestown, NY; and two grandchildren. According to Mrs. Gribbin's wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no calling hours or services. The Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Layton, Sr.
William R. Layton, Sr., died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 in Aultman Hospital. The son of the late Robert and Gladys (Stevens) Layton, he was born in Akron, October 6, 1920. A retired supervisor of maintenance for the City of Akron, he was an avid ham radio operator and served in the U.S. Army throughout Europe during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (Forney) Layton in 1998. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, William R., Jr. and Barbara Layton of Pasadena, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Tom Strouble of Hamilton, OH; son, David Riegler of Canton; son and daughters-in-law, Fred Fritz and Patty Riegler of North Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Karen Layton of Uniontown; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Karlo Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Eli Klingensmith officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pegasus Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center, 7490 Edison St. NE, Hartville, OH 44632.

Wilma L. Coplan
Wilma L. Coplan. Funeral services were held yesterday in the Reed Funeral Home. Burial was in North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Aultman Hospital Cardiac Program, C/O Brian Hill, Aultman Hospital, 2600 6th St SW, Canton, OH 44710.

Frieda A. Kimpton
Frieda A. Kimpton age 78 of Alliance, died at 5:25 a.m. October 1, 2002 at McCrea Manor in Alliance. Born in Mecca, Ohio on Jan. 20, 1924, a daughter of the late John L. and Fannie E. (Reynolds) Lahner, she lived in the Alliance area since 1946. A graduate of Williamsfield High School she attended Business School in Cleveland. She was employed as a Secretary at Girl Scouts of America, then worked with her husband at Barnes Provisions. For a short time she was employed by Jane Francis Nursing Home and she retired from Trentwood Manor as a supervising cook and housekeeper. She married Paul D. Kimpton April 19, 1946; he preceded her in death Aug. 21 1998. She enjoyed many hobbies too numerous to list, but she definitely was a lover of the great outdoors. She is survived by a son, Daniel L. (Gayle) of Bradenton FL, a daughter, Karen J. Kimpton Stewart of Salem, a daughter, Marjorie (Donald) Brown Oberlin of Alliance, a son, Robert (Penny Kunkle) of Uniontown, a daughter, Teri L. (Rick L.) Armstrong of Ravenna, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Highland Memorial Park Chapel with Rev. Arthur Guy officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Beloit. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lodge, 11432 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, OH 44106-2364. Arrangements are by Walton-Schrader Funeral Home, 1131 West State St. Alliance.

Richard J. Marks
Richard Joseph (Rick) Marks, age 48, of Desert Hot Springs, CA., passed away August 25, 2002 in Desert Regional Medical Center, Palm Springs, CA.,
following a brief illness. Rick was born September 1, 1953 to Joseph R. and Norma J. (Watkins) Marks. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas high School and Akron University with a bachelor of fine arts degree. He moved to California after graduation and for 26 years he worked in the whole sale/retail plumbing business. Starting in the warehouse he worked his way to regional manager. In an effort to simplify his life, he returned a year ago to the role of sales representative for Ferguson Plumbing International. Rick was active with Desert Hot Springs Little League where he served of the board, as equipment manger and umpire. When funds were low, Rick would buy the league needed equipment. His life desire was to be a major league empire. An accomplished artist, he painted in all media. Landscapes of the desert and mountains surrounding his home and Ohio in Autumn were his favorite subjects. Preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Richard Marks; maternal grandparents, Hazel L. Little and Willard M. Watkins and his wife, Fern; step grandfather, Harry L. Myers; sister, Charlyn Marie Marks; and niece, Jenna Shanabarger. in addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Joseph R. Marks; and one daughter, Ashley A. Marks both of Desert Hot Springs; one brother, Chris A. (Thersea) Marks of Louisville; three sisters, Jo E. (R. Michael) Allman of Lugoff, SC., Gina R. (James) Lathan of Elgin, SC., and Tina K. (Mark) Shaheen of Canton; grandmother, Lucille I. Myers of Canton; grandfather, Vincent A. Little Sr of Atwood Lake; and step-grandmother, Antonette Marks of Canton; three nieces, five nephews and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Rick's choice was to be cremated. A memorial service was held August 28, 2002 at Desert Chapel in Palm Springs with Pastor Mark Hackbarth officiating., Rev. Nicholas Mancini will conduct private services at Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends will be received Saturday October 5, 2002 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Klocker Hall, Sixteenth and Superior NE. Canton, to view Rick's Paintings and celebrate his life. Donations in his name may be made to Desert Hot Springs Little League District 58, P.O. Bix 701, Desert Springs, CA., 92240 or the charity of your choice.
