Betty L. Gibb
Betty L. Gibb, age 80 of Canton, died Wednesday Sept. 4, at Canterbury Villa of Alliance. She was born July 3, 1922 in Salem to the late Charles and Virginia Carpenter. She graduated from Salem High School in 1940 and married Robert S. Gibb in 1942. They were married for 26 years. She graduated with honors from Kent State University in 1969, with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology. She completed graduate work in education, library science and communication at Kent State University. Before retiring she was employed by the Can ton Public Library, Goodwill Industries and a head librarian at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. She is survived by her son, Jim Gibb of Salem and her daughter, Elizabeth Betsy Hicks of Justin, TX; a brother, Robert Carpenter of Peninsula, OH; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a sister, Verna Glass and a son, Tom Gibb. According to Betty's wishes there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canton Public Library. Betty's arrangements are entrusted to the Heritage Cremation Society.

Catherine M. Young. Following cremation a memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Rev. Dr. Carey E. Sloan III officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the services. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Stark County Humane Society, PO Box 7077, Canton, OH 44705. The Arnold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Emory Boykins, passed away after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 9, 2002 at 4 p.m. at Rhoden Memorial Home. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of service.

Joanne M. Scarfone
Joanne M. Scarfone, age 67, of Canton, passed away Thursday afternoon. Born in Canton, she was the daughter of the late Bernard J. and Rose A. Scavelli Scarfone. She graduated from Timken Vocational High School, was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a regular attendee of daily 8 a.m. mass. Joanne retired from Hercules Engine and was associated with the Arcadia Grill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian M. Kinkead, and a niece, Mary Susan Tennill. She is survived by her brother, Bernard J. and Joan Scarfone of Canton; nieces, Laurie Kinkead, Nedra Petro, both of Canton; nephews, Greg and Kris Marino of Waynesburg, Jim and Dea Kinkead of Canton, Tim and Lilly Kinkead of Taiwan, Denny and Theresa Kinkead of North Canton, David Kinkead of Akron, Chris and Penny Scarfone of Louisville; a special friend, Margaret Bushway of Canton; and many grand nieces and grand nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Frank Carfagna as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday 6-9 p.m. in the Wackerly Funeral Home and in St. Joseph Church Monday morning 9-10 a.m. The procession will form at the church.
John Shernit
John Shernit, age 93, died Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Gaslite Villa in Canal Fulton. He had been a resident of the Waterford at St. Luke in North Canton for the past five years. He previously had been a long time resident of Steubenville, OH and had retired from Weirton Steel Company after 42 years of employment. He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Richard of Canton and William of McLean, Virginia; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private arrangements are being handled by Wackerly Funeral Home of Canton. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Steubenville.

Sophie D. Lombardi
Sophie D. Lombardi, age 86, died September 4, 2002, following an extended illness. She was born November 13, 1915, and was a life resident of Canton. She was a devoted member of All Saints Catholic Church in Canton where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James Jon and Nita (Mollet) Lombardi of Canton, and Edward Lee and Patricia (Hissong) Lombardi of Wintersprings, FL; a brother, Stanley Maciag of Canton; a sister, Florence Johnston of Canal Fulton; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary (Orzeck) Maciag; her husband, Lee C. Lombardi, who died May 21, 1980; a sister, Helen Waltz; and a brother Edward J. Maciag. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 9, 2002, at 10 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, Canton, with Rev. Thomas G. Bishop officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, September 8, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. at Heitger Funeral Service - Jackson Chapel, 5850 Wales Rd. N.W. (Rt. # 241), Jackson Twp., and 9-10 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church prior to the service.
