Dennis C. Bernardi, age 56, of Malvern, OH, died Tuesday evening in Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Born August 20, 1956 in Steubenville, OH to Louis and the late Dorothy M. Bernardi. Dennis is preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Gregory Bernardi and one sister, Lena Mae Bernardi. Survivors include his father, Louis Bernardi of the home; one son, Dennis Bernardi of Wellsburg, WV; one daughter, Leitha Bernardi of Smithville, OH; four brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Rhonda Bernardi of Malvern, David and Lucy Bernardi of Amsterdam, OH, Richard and Lisa Bernardi of Minerva, and Robert Bernardi of Malvern; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Carl Myers of Canton, Linda and Howard Myers of Malvern, Kathy and Dean Offenberger of Malvern, Roseann and James Offenberger of Malvern and Betty Offenberger of Canton; his special friend, Joyce Jackson; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edna P. Shotwell
Edna P. Shotwell, age 77, of North Lisbon St., Carrollton, Ohio, died Wednesday, September 4, 2002, in the Mercy Medical Center, Canton, Ohio, following a short illness. She was born on December 15, 1924, in Jewett, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Boyd E. and Annie (Currington) Schaeffer. She was a life resident of Carroll County; a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carrollton and the VFW Auxiliary and FOE of Carrollton. She was a Foster Grandmother at the St. John's Villa. She was a press operator at the former Carrollton Mfg. Co. She married on April 24, 1943, to Chalmers W. Shotwell, who died on March 9, 1995. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, John E. and Linda Shotwell of Carrollton, Richard R. and Carol Shotwell of Malvern, George T. and Bobbie Shotwell of Winchester, VA., Roy A. Shotwell of Uhrichsville, Ohio; one daughter, Edna M. Davis of Carrollton; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ellis Schaeffer; and one sister, Lia Ellen Pugh. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Carrollton with Reverends Jack Lumley and Larry Lalama officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery. Floyd V. Warner
Floyd Vernon Warner, age 80, of Louisville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his home following a short illness. He was born April 8, 1922 in Harrisburg to the late Edward and Ortilla (Snider) Warner. Floyd was a retired Case farm mechanic and a farmer in Marlboro. He and Lois enjoyed retirement, spending winters in St. Cloud, FL. Floyd was an avid fisherman, turtle trapper and gardener. He will be sadly missed by all his buddies. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lois Miller Warner; his three daughters, Jane Warner of Dayton, Suzanne Warner of Dover and Brenda Warner of St. Cloud, FL. Papa will be missed by his grandsons, Christopher and Joseph Warner. He is also survived by his brother, Russell Warner of Alliance; sisters, Rita Luther of Andrews, NC and Bernie May er of Struthers and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Wilbur Warner and sisters, Dorothy Robinson, Luella Tuttle, Irma Sharon and Gladys Javins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday Sept. 7, at

Gwen G. Moreland, 73, of Airway Circle, Carrollton, died Tuesday afternoon, September 3, 2002 in Aultman Hospital, Canton after an extended illness. She was born May 17, 1929 in Carrollton, OH, daughter of the late Dwight and Gladys Hawk Croxton. She retired from Carrollton Exempted Schools after 22 years as the librarian at Bell Herron Middle School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carrollton and a former 4-H advisor. She is survived by her husband, Harold, whom she married November 28, 1948; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Moreland of Carrollton; one daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Dale Howell of Carrollton; one sister, Mrs. John (Peggy) Dewell of Scio, OH; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. Private services will be held by the family. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Carrollton. Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton supervised the arrangements.
Hulda A. Coleman
Hulda Anna Coleman, age 98, passed away Sunday at Aultman Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born January 25, 1904 in Cincinnati to the late, John Wesley Daisey Louise DeVaughn. Living most of her life in the Massillon-Canton area and was employed by the Perry family in Massillon. She enjoyed all kinds of needle work such as crocheting and knitting. She was a member of St. Paul AME Church in Canton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburt Coleman, sister, Rev. Laura Gregg, brothers, Joseph, William, John, Robert DeVaughn, a niece whom she raised, Josephine DeVaughn Snowden and a foster grandchild, Ronald DeVaughn. She is survived by her foster grandchildren, Mary Louise Rhodes, Charles L. Snowden both of Providence, RI and Edward Keith Snowden of Roanoke, VA and many great-nieces nephews. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's AME Church in Canton. Friends may call 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Brooks Funeral Home in Massillon and from Noon until the service at the church on Friday.
John P. Michel
John P. Michel, R.N., C.R.N.I., age 50, passed away at his home on September 3, 2002. John had two great joys in life. First and foremost, was his love of family. He was a dedicated husband and father and loved nothing more than to be with his wife of 23 years and children, who meant the world to him. John's second passion was nursing and his dedication to the responsibility of caring for his patients. He loved good conversation was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, classical music, playing cards, and micro brew amber ales. He was employed by Summa Health Care System for 20 years and worked part-time for Option Care. He graduated for Oakwood High School in 1969, served in the U.S. Army, graduated from Kent State University in 1977 with a B.A. in Anthropology, and received his nursing diploma from Akron City Hospital Idabelle Firestone School of Nursing in 1982. Preceded in death by parents, Bernard and Virginia (Meyer) Michel; stepmother, Mary (Robertson) Michel; and mother-in-law, Ruth Hrouda. He is survived by his wife, Maggie; son, Nathan; daughter, Erin; sisters, Ann (Barry) Coplan of Cuyahoga Falls, Rebecca (Warren) Gillis of Coral Springs, FL, Cynthia Michael of Canton, Linda Arquilla of Princeton, TX, Marilyn (Lonny) Weatherspoon of Alliance; his brothers, Dennis (Mikki) Michel of Toledo, Andrew (Thuy) Michel of Westerville, Red (Wendy) Michel of Kent, Matthew (Diane) Michel of Pataskala; stepsisters, Diane (Warren) Grabner of Mt. Vernon, Jan (John) Benner of N. Canton, Betty (Pete) Van Norman of Bradenton, FL; father-in-law, Joseph Hrouda of Chardon; brothers-in-law, Joseph (Cheryl) Hrouda of Montville, Ron (Vicki) Hrouda of Chardon, and countless relatives, friends, and co-workers. Joseph S. Stefanko
Joseph S. Stefanko, age 85, of Perry Twp., passed away at his home Tuesday evening. Joe was born in Byesville, Oh, to the late Joseph and Ella Stefanko. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired in 1978 as a fire captain at the Ford Company in Canton after 31 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massillon, the K of C #554, VFW #5047 and the Slovak Fraternal Lodge. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Claudia Ream in August 1994 and a son, Joseph Stefanko in October 1999. He is survived by wife, Elizabeth (Okonsky) Stefanko of the residence with whom he would have shared 57 years of marriage on November 17th; daughter-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Stefanko of Massillon; grandchildren, Richard Ream of Texas, Jared Stefanko of Massillon, Seth Stefanko of Massillon, Marisha Stefanko of Massillon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, his pastor Fr. Raymond Paul will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Mary Ann Nelson
Mary Ann (Yuga) Nelson, age 68, of Canton, OH, passed away peacefully in her sleep, Monday at the home. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Nick and Earl Yuga; and her husband, Ernest J. Nelson. Survivors include her grandson, Bruce Myers; two daughters and son-in-law, Melissa Nelson, Karen and John Bednar; two sisters, Virginia Ross and Frances Spencer; sister-in-law, Ruby King; numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours or services. Her wishes to be cremated and her cremains will be buried in Sunset Hills Burial Park. The Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maryanne Kompara Pflug, 54, of Steubenville, died Monday, September 2, 2002. She was born August 1, 1948, in Massillon, OH., a daughter of the late Gus and Anne Krause Kompara. Maryanne was the owner and operator of MKP Research Inc. since 1988. A graduate of Jackson High School, Miami University of Ohio; she did graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh; taught Creativity at the Creativity Problem Solving Institute of The State University of New York. Instructor of Moderating Skills for Riva Market Research in Bethesda, MD., a past executive board member of the Qualitative Research Consultants Association (QRCA), having served as vice president and treasurer; member of the Women's Foodservice Forum, a member of the Board of Directors of the Trinity Health System, member o the Heather Twig; past president of the Neighborhood House, former president of Network Ohio Valley, former board member of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Wheeling Symphony Auxiliary and a member of the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, Wheeling, WV. Surviving are her former husband, Richard S. Pflug, Sr. of
Steubenville; one son, Richard S. Pflug, Jr. of Steubenville; one daughter, Kathryn S. (Katie) Pflug of Steubenville; one brother, Robert (Brenda) Kompara of Canal Fulton. Neil J. Pergande, age 73, passed away August 28, 2002 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Pergande was a minister for the United Church of Christ, serving pastorates in Braddock, PA, Richville, OH, Ashtabula, OH, and Stow, OH. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ann; Sons, John Pergande of Stow and Scott Pergande of Youngstown; sisters, Ione Swanton of Rochester, MN and Lorraine Lien of Elbow Lake, MN; and a host of friends. A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8th, at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 1480 Eastwood Ave. in Akron. Memorials may be made to the church or the Hospice Care Center.

Rev. Deacon Edgar M. Cobett Sr., Ed.D.
Rev. Deacon Edgar M. Cobett Sr., Ed.D., Northeastern Ohio educator and clergyman, Dr. Edgar Cobett, passed away on September 3, 2002. Dr. Cobett, an avid life-long swimmer, collapsed and died suddenly while swimming laps at the North Canton, OH, YMCA. He had a history of cardiac difficulties. Dr. Cobett was born in Canton on July 2, 1929. He graduated from Canton McKinley High School, in 1947. He attended the U.S. Military Academy and the Ohio State University before transferring to St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN., where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. Dr. Cobett received his Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. He continued his graduate studies at Kent State University and eventually earned his Doctor of Education from Case Western Reserve University in 1969. In 1949, he married his High School sweetheart, Norma Jean McLaughlin. Together, they raised four children. After college, Dr. Cobett held teaching and coaching positions in Fort Wayne, IN., and in North Canton, OH. He was principal at Southeast Local High School in Portage County, OH. In Ashtabula County, OH he served as principal and superintendent of the Jefferson Area Schools. During his employment with Parco Scientific, in Warren, OH., he authored a series of science textbooks, which were published by the American Book Company. In 1968, Dr. Cobett became an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Kent State University. In 1972, he moved to Youngstown State University, where he served as Professor and Chairperson for Administration and Secondary School education. The Outstanding Secondary School Student Teaching Award at YSU is named in his honor. Dr. Cobett retired from YSU in 1987. Edgar Cobett, Sr., was the co-founder of NEOLA, Inc., Coshocton, OH., an innovative consulting firm that reviews and updates the by-laws and policies of school boards in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. In 1984, Dr. Cobett became an Ordained Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church. He served in the Diocese of Youngstown and later served as the Associate Director of the Pastoral Institute and Co-chairman of Diaconate Formation for the Diocese of Venice, FL. Most recently, Dr. Cobett served the congregation at Little Flower Parish in North Canton, OH. Dr. Cobett was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a Danforth Fellow, a Fellow of St. Joseph's College, and distinguished Professor and Chairperson Emiritus at Youngstown State University. Edgar M. Cobett, Sr., is survive by his wife, Norma, of N. Canton, OH; son and daughter-in-law, Ed Jr. and Judy Cobett of Irvine, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jan Cobett of Strongsville, OH; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Richard Morgan of Uniontown, OH; son, Jim Cobett of Chino Hills, CA; three grandchildren, Emily and Scott and Noah Cobett; two sisters, Rose Marie Campbell of Massillon, OH., and Mary Bucklew of Canton, OH; and a brother, John Cobett of Canton, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Little Flower Catholic Church with Fr. Kevin Fete as Celebrant. Entombment will be in the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Richard W. Sautters
Richard W. Sautters, age 77, of Canton, OH., passed away Wednesday morning at the home following a brief illness. Born in Canton on June 3, 1925, he was the son of the late, Karl E. and Gertrude (Ressler) Sautters. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School and was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Aircorp. He was a self employed carpenter, working for his father, Karl E. Sautters Contracting; and was a retired employee for the Snyder Cabinet Shop in North Canton, retiring in 1989. For many years he was involved with Roller and Tumbling Pigeons in Stark County; and he enjoyed working with model trains and airplanes as his personal hobbies. He attended St. Peters Catholic Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Swick. He was a devoted husband and loving father and is survived by his wife, Vivian Sautters of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Denise Sautters of Canton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy Farmer of Copley, OH., Sherri and Mike Trissel of Canton, Connie and Tom Pifer of Canton; there are 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Msgr. John C. Finnigan officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Ruth E. VanOrman
Ruth E. VanOrman, age 89, of 11080 E. Gypsy Lane Rd., Bowling Green, OH, passed away Tuesday morning in Wood County Nursing Home, Bowling Green, OH. She was born February 23, 1913 in Canton, OH to her parents, Emmett E. and Isa S. (Haag) Davis. She was a charter member of he BL Chapter of the PEO, past president of the PEO, Eastern Stars, Trirosis Chapter, all of Canton and St. John's United Church of Christ in Genoa, OH. Preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. VanOrman, whom she married October 17, 1936 in Massillon, OH; her parents; and one brother. Survived by son, Walter W. VanOrman of Dalton, OH; daughter, Judith Wilbarger of Bowling Green, OH; sister, Naomi Regula of Massillon, OH; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Services will be Friday, September 6, 2002 at 7 p.m. in the Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas D. Moyer officiating. A private burial will be held. William C. Gotschall
William C. Gotschall, age 81, of North Canton died Tuesday, September 3, 2002, in Wade Park Veterans Hospital. Born in Wellsville, OH. Bill had been a Canton area resident since 1944. He retired in 1964 as Clerk in the Canton Post Office with 16 years of service. Bill had been a member of Lathrop Lodge #676, AASR, Tadmoor Temple and Army Veteran of World War II serving in Africa and Italy. Survivors include his wife, Patricia H. Gotschall of the residence; four stepchildren, Galand Emigh of Canton, Brenda (Steven) Books of Massillon, Pamela (Dennis) Fouse of North Canton and Mark (Tammy) Emigh of Canton; 11 step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; brother, George Gotschall of Brunswick, OH. William C. Morgan
William C. Morgan, age 79, of Brandon, FL, formerly of Lake Mohawk, Malvern, OH and before retirement Bergholz, OH died Monday in the Brandon Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Bill was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Bergholz, OH, the son of the late, William and Sadie Jenkins Morgan. He was a graduate of the Bergholz High School. A member of the Masonic Lodge in Salineville, the Valley of Steubenville Scottish Rite, the American Legion Post 375 of Malvern, the Loyal Order of Moose in Brandon, FL and a lifetime member of the Bergholz Church of Christ. He proudly served his country in World War II in the Naval Air Corps as a crew member on a B-24. Bill loved people and never met a stranger. He retired from the Voto Manufacturing and Sales Co. of Steubenville after 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Morgan, two sisters, Willavene Westcott Greenfield, Mary Louise Holligan. Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, whom he married on Feb. 26, 1944, Anna Kacsur Morgan of Brandon, FL; one daughter, Kathy Foltz and husband, Dwain of East Canton, OH; two sons, Richard Morgan and wife, Jeanne of Marion, OH, William Morgan and wife, Olivia of Corpus Christi, TX; one sister, Margaret Paisley, of Bergholz, OH; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Charles Salimbeni
Charles Vincent Salimbeni, departed this life suddenly in Aultman Hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002. He was born April 11, 1948, in Canton, OH. He was a graduate of the Class of 1967 at McKinley High School. He worked briefly at Timken Roller Bearing and Diebold, after that he was recently self-employed. He was a past member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and later Greater Bethel Apostolic Church. He is preceded in death by his father, Armondo Salimbeni and maternal grandparents, Victor and Josephine Milini.
