Anna M. Graves
Anna M. Graves, age 97, passed away on July 20, 2002 at McKinley Life Center. She was born in Alabama and had lived in the Canton community for many years. She is preceded in death by three daughters, Helen Graves, Betty Graves, and Mary Wilson; one son, Augustus Graves. She leaves many memories to ten grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Rhoden Memorial Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service. Grace Ann James. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Rudy officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 6-8 p.m. Grace requested thanks to Dr. Weeman and all the staff who cared for her at Aultman Hospital, Cancer Center and Aultman Hospice. Also thanks to Goodwill Industries and staff for always finding a job for her, each time she returned to work following medical leaves. H. Frances Bankerd
H. Frances Bankerd, age 80, of Crandall Medical Center, formerly of Marlboro, died at Crandall Medical Center Thursday, July 18, 2002. She was born June 17, 1922 in Freeburg, to Harry and Wilda (Reed) Unger and was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Bankerd was an employee of the Ford Motor Co. in Canton for 30 years in the payroll department as an accountant clerk until retiring. She enjoyed plants and gardening. She is survived by one brother, Russell (Buz) Unger of Apopka, FL; one sister, Grace McNenny of Mukilteo, WA; three nieces; two nephews. Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert J. Bankerd, whom she married July 19, 1962 and who died Oct. 15, 1981. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 at 7 p.m. in Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 South Union Ave., Alliance, with Dr. Kline Roberts of Paradise United Church of Christ in Louisville officiating. Helen D. Barnhouse. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday (tonight) 8 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Tucker officiating. Michael J. Palmer
Michael J. Palmer (Boozer) age 56 of Freeport, OH and a native of Canton died July 22, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center after a sudden illness. He had been employed at the Ford Motor Co. for 14 years as a machinist. He was of Catholic faith. He was preceded in death by his father Earnest N. Palmer; two brothers, Earnest C. Palmer and Eugene M. Palmer. He is survived by his mother, Rita Palmer of Freeport, OH; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Cheryl Palmer of Dennison, OH; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita Karlosky of Peterburg, KY, Elaine and Paul Craig of Howell, MI, Catherine Whaley and Larry Rukes of Freeport, OH. Also many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9p.m. in the Rossi Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. John Zucik officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Rossi Funeral Home, his wish was to be cremated.
Richard P. Mentzer
Richard P. (Dick) Mentzer, age 82, of Westerville, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at St. Ann's Hospital after a lengthy illness. Retired from Davey Tree Service, formerly known as Karl Kuemmerling Associates. U.S. Army Veteran, World War II where he received the Bronze Star. Preceded in death by mother, Grace Spane; and son, Michael R. Mentzer. Survived by wife of 53 years, Maxine; son, Dennis Mentzer of Powell; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Steve Hodge of Westerville; grandchildren, Mickey Mentzer of Cincinnati, Missy Leach of Hilliard, Michael and Kyle Hodge of Westerville and Samantha Mentzer of New Rome; great-granddaughter, Breane Leach; brother, Harold (Wren) Mentzer of Florida. Per Richard's request there will be no visitation or funeral service, however, the family will hold a private memorial service. Ruth M. Fernandez
Ruth Mary Fernandez, age 79, of Canton, passed away Sunday July 21, 2002 in at her home following an extended illness. Born in St. Clairsville she was the daughter of the late Guy, Sr. and Anna Hall. A graduate of Timken High School in 1944, she retired from McKinley High School in 1978, having worked there as the cafeteria cashier. She was a former member of Women of the Moose, Lodge #233, and First Mennonite Church. She was known as Grandma to everybody. Preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Hall; two sisters, Marlene and Alma and Hall. She is survived by four daughter, Mrs. Clifford (Judy) Meek of North Canton, Mrs. Johnny (Carmen) Maton of Riverdale, GA., Mrs. Don (Brenda) Newcommer of Canton, Mrs. Nabil (Anna) Mlaiki of Canton; three brothers, Guy Hall Jr., of Canton, Glenn Hall Sr. of Waco, Edger Hall Sr. of Louisville; two sisters, Pegg Brown of Georgia, Betty Hall of Canton; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Earl B. Jack Funeral Home. Burial in St. Jacob's Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 6-9 p.m. or one hour prior to services.
Willard B. Eby
Willard B. Eby, age 80, went home to be with the Lord, July 21, 2002. Willard was born on March 18, 1922 to the late Herbert and Maude (Lee) Eby. He was a Canton resident all of his life. Willard was an army veteran of WW II and earned a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for the Republic Steel Co. for 40 dedicated years, retiring in 1980. After his retirement, he and his wife, Thelma spent the winters in Sebring, FL where they made many good friends and memories. Willard was a member of Faith Community Church (formerly called Christian Tabernacle) where he faithfully served on the Board of Trustees, as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, bus driver and any other capacity where his time and talents were needed. He was a member of the Happy Hearts and the Canton Center Mall Walkers Club. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Herbert and Harold Eby and his half sisters, Violet Miller and Viola Manley. Survived by his wife of 58 years, Thelma (Bixler) Eby; daughters and son-in-law, Wilma and James Pettay of Massillon, Cynthia Eby of Canton; grandsons and spouses, Dr. James and Kim Pettay of Akron, Jeffrey and Tammy Pettay of Massillon; great grandchildren, Alina and Jackson Pettay of Massillon, and Austin Pettay of Akron; special grandsons Omar and Carlos; sisters, Ann Von Seeger of Iowa and Helen Bixler of Carrollton; brothers-in-law and their spouses, Dalton and Cynthia Bixler of Dover, William and Carol Bixler of Nevada; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wilbur of Massillon as well as many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be at Schneeberger Funeral Home on Thursday, July 25 from 4-8 p.m.. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Rodney Price and Rev. Glen Osborn on Friday July 26 at 11 a.m. at Faith Community Church. The family wishes to thank the staffs at Aultman Hospital and Hanover House for the wonderful care he received in the last few months of his life.
James Jim Aslanes
James Jim Aslanes, age 71, of Massillon, passed away in his home Monday morning after a brief illness. He was a life resident of Canton. A member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Massillon. He was a retired employee of Babcock-Wilcox Co., where he was employed for 32 years, after which he was employed for ten years at Heinz Frozen Food Co. He served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1949 to 1952, where he was a Sergeant. Survived by his wife, Poliniki (Adamides) Aslanes, with whom he celebrated 35 years of marriage; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Kristin Aslanes of Potomac Falls, VA, Harry and Mary Aslanes of Massillon, Anthony and Barbara Aslanes of Canton; one brother and sister-in-law, Gregory and Janet L. Aslanes of Massillon; one grandson, Anthony S. Aslanes Jr. (A.J., his pride and joy). Preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Androniki Aslanes; a daughter, Denise Aslanes; a sister, Rosemarie Aslanes. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Canton with Rev. Fr. C.J. Shepis officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Rossi Funeral Home Tuesday (tonight) 6-9 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday, where the body will lie in state. Max J. Clark
Max J. Clark. January 11, 1922 - July 21. 2002. Loving husband and beloved father passed away following a brief illness of pancreatic cancer. He was born in Ashland, OH. This year family and friends celebrated his life by honoring him on his 80th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of 59 years, whom he courted and married shortly before serving in the Army in World War II. He served our country in the 29th Battalion receiving a purple heart and a good conduct medal along with several other medals of service. After the war, Max graduated from Ashland College and received his law degree from Western Reserve. He was sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He retired as a Medicare Hearing Officer from the Nationwide Insurance Company with nearly 35 years of loyal service. He loved to garden and tend his yard, but most of all, he loved the Lord and enjoyed sitting on committees throughout his life which enhanced the ministry of Christ United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles L. Clark in May of this year. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children and their spouses; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Randy Best of Kentucky; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Linda Clark of Massillon; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Kevin Bandy of Marysville, Ohio; and daughter-in-law, Sue Clark of Massillon. He enjoyed being with his seven grandchildren, Matt, Ben, and Kati Best, Jennifer Bury and Jeremy Clark and Sean and Lisa Clark as well as his six great-grandchildren. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Karlo-Feucht Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. NW, Canton, OH and one hour prior to service at the church. Service 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Christ United Methodist Church, 3500 Cleveland Ave. NW, with Rev. Nancy Conley officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Eleanor Besselman
Eleanor McArdle Besselman, age 85, life-long resident of Canton died July 20, 2002 in Marietta, OH, where she had resided recently. She was born September 4, 1916, in Mason City, WV, a daughter of the late Arthur and Leona Stanley McArdle. She was a 1934 graduate of Canton McKinley High School and attended Canton Business School and Walsh College. Her professional career spanned more than fifty years primarily among three companies. She was office manager/bookkeeper for Karl Kuemerling, Kling Motors and Robert Smart. She was a past member of the Canton Executive Club, Credit Executive Club and Canton Women's Breakfast Club. She had also served as a volunteer at both Aultman and Timken Mercy Hospitals and was a charter member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and hosted the coffee bar. She is survived by two daughters, Geneloise Besselman Schwaner and her husband, Alex of Marietta, OH, and Cheryl Besselman of Canton; and one son, James S. Besselman and his wife, Susan of Marietta, GA; and her beloved grandchildren, Christian Schwaner of Colorado Springs, CO, Merredith Schwaner of Shaker Heights, OH, Jimmy Besselman of Marietta, GA; and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Schwaner Toman; and sister, Glenna Fruth. Mrs. Besselman was one of five children and was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jim and Joseph McArdle; her sister, Mary Eloise Roush; and her children's father, William Besselman. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Canton, OH, with Fr. John Nentwick as celebrant. The family will be present meet friends at the Lamiell Funeral Home, 1353 Cleveland Ave., Canton, OH from 2-4:30 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday. Donations may be made in her name to Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
Norma E. Douglas
Norma E. Douglas, age 67, of Canton, OH, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002, in Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. Born in New Matamoras, OH, October 5, 1934, to the late Wilbert and Anna Farnsworth. She retired from the Hoover Company in 1995. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Douglas; son, Timothy; one brother; one sister. Survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Diana Douglas of North Canton; grandson, Christopher; granddaughter, Cassandra; five brothers; two sisters. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, 251 25th St. N.W., Canton, OH, with Father Michael Pastrikos officiating. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Friends will be received at Karlo Sons Funeral Home, Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. where a Trisagion service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
