Ancel H. Merriner
Ancel H. Merriner, age 74, of Canton, OH., passed away Wednesday morning following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hundred, WV., on November 29, 1927 he was a retired employee of the Republic Engineered Steel, retiring in 1998 after 48 years of service. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and a member of the Wm. McKinley Masonic Lodge #431 F AM., Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Canton and Tadmor Shrine Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Rebecca Merriner; a sister, Cecil Fowler; and four brothers, Harold, Charles, Junior and Wilbur Merriner. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty Merriner of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Foster Cunningham of Atwater, OH., Bonnie and Donald McLaughlin of Canton; grandchildren, Kevin and Tammi Walther and Dale McLaughlin. There are three great grandchildren; two brothers, James and Gerald Merriner; and a sister, Betty Merriner all of Clarksburg, WV. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in Sunset Hills Burial Park with Rev. Donald McKee officiating. There will be calling hours at the Reed Funeral Home on Friday from 4-8 p.m. McKinley Masonic Lodge will hold services Friday at 6:45 p.m.

Daniel C. Smith Sr.
Daniel C. Smith Sr. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Kreighbaum- Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. Interment in Melscheimer Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation at 1373 Grandview Ave Ste 200, Columbus, OH. 43212.

Doris A. DeFord
Doris A. DeFord, 95, of Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Carrollton, died Monday afternoon, May 20, 2002, after an extended illness. She was born December 25, 1906, in Carrollton; daughter of the late Phillip and Ida Roudebush. Doris moved to Winter Park in 1959. Doris attended Ohio State University and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was a member of the Winter Park Presbyterian Church, the John Young Science Center, Young Woman's Community Club, Loch Haven Art Society and the Morse Art Gallery. On July 10, 1972, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Deane C. DeFord; five sisters: Wilma Johnston, Lois McConnell, Frances McAbee, Lila Bonifant and Esma Helwig are also deceased. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John C. (Sue) DeFord of Carrollton, Dr. James W. (Terrie) DeFord of Gainesville, Fla.; one brother, Earl Roudebush of Sebring, Fla.; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Roudebush of Carrollton, Mrs. Katherine Emsley of Canton, Mrs. Helen Trethaway of Crampton, NH., Mrs. Mary Moore of North Carolina; four grandchildren: David, Jodi, Monica and Deane; two great-grandchildren: Carly and Kyle; sister-in-law, Ethel DeFord Sweeney. Memorial services will be Saturday, June 1st., at 11 a.m. in the Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton with Rev. Wayne Barnard officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery. The family requests memorials be made in Doris's memory to the Donors favorite charity.

Edna H. Flynn
Edna H. Flynn, age 91, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2002. Born in Akron, Oh, she was a longtime Canton resident and member of Trinity United Church of Christ and a member of The Welcome In Sunday School Class. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Flynn in 1969 and her three sisters. Survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Bebe Flynn, Robert and Barbara Flynn, Russell and Patricia Flynn; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and John Muncer, JoAnn and Thomas Schwitzgable; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ with Pastor Darlene D. Garber officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends will be received Saturday from 9-11 a.m. in the church parlor. The family suggests memorials be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 3909 Blackburn Rd. N.W., Canton 44718.

Ethel K. Muntz
Ethel K. Muntz, age 92, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Hennis Care Centre in Dover. She was born July 8, 1909 in Oakdale, PA, to the late Arthur L. Kaltenborn, Sr. and Effie G. Bower Kaltenborn. Mrs. Muntz was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was past worthy Matron of the former Orange Chapter No #302, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Muntz served for 45 years as a board member of the American Cancer Society Tuscarawas County Unit and was very active in Reach to Recovery, which provides support and information to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Muntz, in 1997; a daughter, Margaret Proefrock; son, Arthur Harvey Muntz; and a brother, John B. Kaltenborn. Mrs. Muntz is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ethel G. Katoll of Sherrodsville; a brother, Arthur L. Kaltenborn, Jr. of Kent; ten grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be on May 31, 2002 at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with the Eastern Star Service conducted at 8:45 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. The memorial service will be on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 11: 30 a.m. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Pastor Michael E. Walters and Mrs. Muntz's nephews, Rev. John Muntz and Rev. James Browne, officiating. Immediately following the memorial service, a meal will be shared in the church. Eugene G. Miday. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 11 a.m. in West Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Paul Rudy officiating. Family and friends will meet at the Fourth Street Entrance of West Lawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Aultman Hospice, 4510 Dressler Road N.W., Canton, OH 44718. The Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Stowell Rice
George Stowell Rice, 73, died at his residence in Massillon, OH Monday May 27, 2002. He was born in Elyria, OH, February 21, 1929, the son of the late, Nadine Motts Rice and Gerald Stowell Rice. He attended elementary school in Sullivan, OH, graduated from Timken High School in Canton, OH in 1947 and attended college at Ohio State University and Kansas Wesleyan. Military service include a stint with the U.S. Navy at Ohio State and the U.S. Air Force in both Alaska and Kansas. While with the Air Force he served with the Strategic Air Command. He later served as an Air Force Reserve member out of Youngstown, OH and also with the Ohio National Guard. He began his business career in partnership with his father and brother in the family business, the Maytag Rice Company in Canton, OH, and later worked for the Hoover Company and the Timken Company in that city. Throughout his lifetime, he maintained a close interest in the family farm in Ashland County near Sullivan, OH. His sisters survived him, Margaret Sue Mears and husband, Richard of Huntington, WV, and Geraldine Rice Burden and husband, William J. of Mendham, NJ; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Rice of Decatur, GA. A brother, William Eli Rice preceded him in death. Survivors also include eight nieces and nephews; Michele Johnson, Columbus, OH, Nadine Moehlenkamp, Woodbridge, VA; Jay Burden, New Providence, NJ, Ted Mears, Sauk Rapids, MN, Todd Mears, Culloden, WV, John Mears, Huntington, WV, Philip Rice, Chattanooga, TN and David Rice, Anniston, AL and fifteen great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Rice will be held Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sullivan Christian Church in Sullivan, OH. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the Sullivan Southview Cemetery following the services. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, PO Box 182039 Dept. 013, Columbus, OH 43218-2039 or to the Sullivan Christian Church 495 U.S. Rt. 224, Sullivan, OH 44880. Glen C. Fowler
Glen C. Fowler. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church. There will be calling hours at the Reed Funeral Home on Thursday (tonight) 6-8 p.m., where The K. of C. will hold services Thursday at 6:15 p.m. His wishes were to be cremated following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Canton Ex-Newsboys.

Helen M. Bracey. Memorial service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 3500 Cleveland Ave. NW at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002.

James H. White
James H. White. Funeral services will be conducted in the Kight Funeral Home in Cumberland, MD, on Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Lukes Lutheran Cemetery in Cumberland. Calling hours will be in the Reed Funeral Home Thursday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 925 S. Main St., North Canton, OH 44720.

Joseph R. Czech
Joseph R. Czech. There will be no calling hours. Family members will meet at 1 p.m., one hour before services to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (today), at the Welch-Sekeres-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Ronald M. Klingler, Pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church will officiate. Burial immediate following at Calvary Cemetery.

June Flesher
June Flesher, age 76, died Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Altercare of Navarre. Born December 13, 1925, she was the daughter of Clifford and Alemeda Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack W. Flesher. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ, 915 State Avenue, Massillon, on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 11:00 a.m.

Lillian M. Chipps
Lillian M. Chipps, age 96, of Calera, OK., died Monday, in the Calera Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness. Daughter of the late Fred and Anna (Bambeck) Philippi. She was a life resident of the Canton area, prior to moving to Oklahoma. Member of the Canton Baptist Temple. Lillian greatly enjoyed walking, flowers and bird watching. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Harrison Chipps, in 1970; her daughter, Janet Baker; three sisters, Rose Adkins, Arline Shocksnider and Evelyn Haines; one brother, Fred Philippi. She is survived by one daughter, Joanne Eidson of Durant, OK; one son, David Chipps of Knoxville, TN; one sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Erv Staub of Canton; one brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Amy Philippi of Canton; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on South Cleveland Ave., with Dr. Harold Henniger officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Lucille W. Loos
Lucille W. Loos, age 93, died May 25, 2002. Born in Canton, she was a longtime resident of Akron. A member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Akron Women's City Club and Stan Hywet Hall Women's Auxiliary Board, She had worked at the Harter Bank in Canton. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Loos, Sr., she is survived by her sons, Robert W. Loos of Akron and Jackson A. Loos of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, 2726 W. Market St., Akron, with Dr. Kenneth Sauer and Rev. Jean Hansen officiating. Private Family interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. There are no calling hours.

Mary Lang
Mary Lang, age 84, of Canton, passed away Tuesday morning, May 28, 2002, in Aultman Hospital following a sudden illness. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband, Carl, with whom she would have celebrated 54 years of marriage this July 17; a son, Charles and Karen Lang of Canton; granddaughters, Sara, Carol and Rachel; sisters, Margaret Wieland and Ann Wieland, both of Akron; a brother, Paul Wieland of California. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Youngblood and a brother, Joe. Funeral services will be held Friday at 12 noon. in St. Joseph Church with Msgr. Frank A. Carfagna as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Don William Funeral Home.

Morris Hightower
Morris Hightower, age 102, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 26, 2002. He was born on December 4, 1899 in Preston, GA. Preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Molly Bell-Hightower; wife, Irene Smith-Hightower; daughter, Johnnie Bell-Tarpley; brothers, Arthur Shepphard, William, Gene, Lonnie, John and Marcellus Hightower; sisters, Versie, Eula and Ludie Hightower. Morris retired from Canton City Schools, as a crossing guard. He was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, serving in the caring and Sharing Food Programs, Male Chorus, Deacon Emeritus. Morris leaves to cherish his precious memories; daughter, Lillie Bell Hightower-Cantrell of Preston, GA; step-daughters, Alean Castellanos, Asrean (AL) Pierce, Betty Smith, Sylvia Smith, Annette Gardner, Deborah Smith, Diana Smith, Rhonda Smith; son, J.W. Cox of Virginia Beach, VA; step-sons, Lawrence (Pat) and Danny (Cynthia) Smith, of Houston, TX, Robert (Debra) Smith; grandchildren, Isaiah, Isaac (Michelle) and Gary (Adrienne) Robinson, Glenda (Thomas) Russell and a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, May 31, 2002 at 12 Noon, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 920 3rd St. SE, Massillon, OH 44646, Pastor Raymond Mason, officiating. Thomas J. Walsh, Jr.
Thomas J. Walsh, Jr., age 77, of Sandyville, OH, devoted husband, and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died suddenly Monday morning. Born in Canton, he had lived in N. Canton before moving to Sandyville in 1996. Tom was a 1942 graduate of St. John's High School and had attended Kent State University. During World War II he served with the Army in the European Theatre, the Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Germany. He retired in 1986 from Ashland Oil Co. after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and had been the Rector of the Canton Cursillo #15, and the Rector of Emmanuel Emmaus #3. Survived by his wife, Marjorie L. (Scott) Walsh; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy and Greg Drew of Wooster, OH, and Chris Walsh of Canton; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Tom Walsh III of Canton, Greg and Denise Walsh of Sandyvile, and Jim and Patrice Walsh of Canton; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Fran Walsh of Canton; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Schultz and her husband, Charles of N. Canton, and Rae Lynn Toolan of Canton; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. Sr. and Helen (Flagg); a sister-in-law, Kathy Delaney; and a niece and two nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the St. John's Catholic Church with Fr. Ronald Klingler as celebrant. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday (Tonight) from 5-8 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home. Twila Ruth Witte
Twila Ruth (Schweikert) Witte, 83, died May 28, 2002. Born Nov. 7, 1918, to James S. and Emma Margaret (Sherer) Ake in East Canton, OH, she was a graduate of East Canton High School in 1936, and Timken Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She was a member of Mercy Hospital Honor Society and Timken Mercy Hospital Alumni. Mrs. Witte worked as a second shift charge nurse after graduation and later was Dr. M.L. Greenberger's office assistant. She was an industrial nurse at Goodyear until 1945, and in 1971 returned to Goodyear Aerospace, retiring in 1982. Mrs. Witte was a member of Woodruff Grove United Methodist Church. She loved to fish and garden and was proud to be a nurse. Mrs. Witte was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Schweikert in 1972. She is survived by husband, Paul A. Witte of Wolcottville, IN; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Russ Kullmann of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter, Dora Jean Boyd of Akron; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Roger Nicholas of Akron; grandchildren, Todd Miller, Jennifer Martin, Kindra Boyd; great-granddaughter, Jadzia Martin; stepchildren, Darla Samra, Larry and Nedra Witte, Jean and Stephen Parnin; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Rev. Richard Frederick officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday, 11 a.m. until service time. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1236 Weathervane Lane, Suite 300C, Akron, OH 44313, or to ones favorite charity.

Alice M. Johnson. Funeral services will be held on Friday May 31, 2002 at 12 Noon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1403 13th St. NE, where Pastor C.A. Richmond will be officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service. Condolences may be sent to and procession will form at 432 Gobel Ave. SE, Canton, OH 44707. Interment in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

John D. Williams. Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 1, 2002 at 12 Noon at Shiloh Baptist Church in Massillon where Rev. Leonard Simon will be officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Condolences may be sent to and procession will form at 1730 Lincolnway E. Massillon, OH 44646. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
