Aretha Jenkins
Aretha Rita Jenkins, age 30, passed away Wednesday night, May 8. 2002 at Aultman Hospital following a long illness. Born on May 31, 1971 in Canton. Preceded in death by her grandparents, Aggienore and Linke White, Carlene and Ed Jenkins; aunts, Bessie Fields, Doris Bowdre. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Former member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, singing in the choir and participating in talent shows in New York, also a former member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. Aretha was a graduate of McKinley Senior High School, where she was an outstanding track athlete, receiving numerous trophies and certificates, she was also involved in gymnastics. Aretha attended Akron University, where she was going for her degree in child psychology. Aretha leaves to cherish her precious memories, daughter, Brittney N. Jenkins; son, Antonio M. Johnson, Jr., of the home; parents, Rev. Lewis and Ruby Jenkins of Canton; three sisters, Vivian Ball, Denise Hammond, Shirley Smith, all of Canton; six brothers, Bobby Lewis Jenkins of Columbus, OH, Tommy Lee Jenkins, Dennis Jenkins, Dontay Jenkins, Mark Jenkins, all of Canton, Jeffery Jenkins of Norfolk, VA; special aunts, Margaret Henderson of Lithonia, GA, Colia Jefferies, Juanita (Russell) Reed, Earlene White, all of Kansas City, MO, Bernice White of Hollandale, MS, Annie Hamilton of Canton; uncles, J.W. White of Kansas City, MO, Robert Jenkins of Chicago, IL; special friend, Antonio M. Johnson, Sr.; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Bette E. Lehman
Bette E. Lehman, 84, of Canton, died Sunday morning, May 12, 2002 at home. She was a member of Westbrook Park United Methodist Church and was well known for over 30 years as a waitress and caterer at The American Legion of Canton and the Four Winds Restaurant. Born in Canton, July 4th 1918 to the late Harry and Edna (Owen) Hinton, she is survived by her husband of 65 years, Charles J; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Norman Ward of Canton; son, Timothy C. of Akron; grandchildren, Timothy J. Ward, Jennifer E. Ward, and her fiancee, Jeff Geisey, Timothy Lehman; great grandson, Cody Ward; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn J. Hardesty. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday May 16th at Karlo-Feucht Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. Blaine Steven Hall
Blaine Steven Hall, age 17, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 11, 2002. Born December 13, 1984 to parents, Lana V. Brandt and Ivan (Joe) B. Hall Jr. He was a resident of Canton and Bolivar, where he resided with his aunt and uncle, Mr. Mrs. Tab (Jennifer) Hartman. Also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Lanacrista and Brad McCallister, nephew, Devon Alexander Moore; grandparents, Nancy and Doug Gunnoe, Donna Kuehn all of Canton; great grandmother, Juanita Veon of Salem and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. Calling Hours will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. with a memorial service at 8 p.m. in the Schneeberger Funeral Home.
Daniel J. Womack
Daniel J. Womack, age 46, went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born in Canton, Nov. 15, 1955, and had lived in this community his entire life. He attended Canton McKinley High School and was a member of The Golden Pheasant Softball League and joined Mt. Calvary Second Baptist Church at an early age. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23. He leaves to cherish his memory mother, Alice Womack; daughter, Starla Tuck; son, Daniel Pride; sisters, Ida Gooden, Delores King, Luehieldry Drue' all of Canton, Jerry (Otha) Pretty of Raleigh, NC, Mildred Redmond of Columbus, OH; brother, Donnie Marshall and host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 16th, 2002 at 12 Noon at Mt. Calvary Second Baptist Church, where Pastor Anthony Robinson will be officiating. Jack G. G. Hendershot, Sr. MD
Jack G. G. Hendershot, Sr. MD, died Monday at the home of his son in Findlay after a brief
illness. Born Sept. 22, 1921, Dr. Hendershot lived the first seven years in his native Canton, OH. A rapid decline in the economy forced a plunge into primitive living in an antiquated log house with its truck farm. His family of four eked out a living by raising crops for door to door peddling in Canton. A last six years of elementary education was obtained at the one room Hickory Grove School. McKinley High School, Bachelor of Science degree from Capital University in Columbus, MD from Ohio State's College of Medicine, and internship at his home town Mercy Hospital was to be followed by a call to active duty as a medical officer assigned to the Air Corps as an orthopedic surgeon. While a medical student he was joined in marriage with Marjorie Fowler. This union resulted in the birth of a daughter, Susan Marie (Master of Science in Nursing), a son, Richard J. MD, and a second son, Jack G.G. Jr. MD. General practice of medicine was begun within ten days of separation from service and pursued for the following 20 years in North Canton. At the age of 46 he began a residency in Anesthesiology (D.A.B.A.) and was installed as a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologist (F.A.C.A.). Dr. Hendershot retired in 1985. An accomplished pilot, he was qualified to fly single and multi-engine land planes, single-engine sea planes and gliders. In retirement he pursued the many hobbies of wood working, photography, free lance writing, fishing, hunting, tree farming, water and acrylic painting. He was a member of the national (AMA, ASA, AAGP, and IARS) state (OSMA, OSA, OAGP), as well as county components of those organizations, Phi Chi Medical fraternity, Kappa Alpha Pi (scholastic honors) and Delta Phi Alpha (German Honors) comprise his college and university fraternal affiliations. Survived by his daughter, and son-in-law, Susan and Dr. Brady Stoner of Cambridge, OH; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard and Saundra Hendershot of Kansas City, KS, and Dr. Jack G.G. and Candace Hendershot, Jr. of Findlay; six grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Elwell of San Jose, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie, Oct. 20, 2000. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Eli O. Klingensmith officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Karen Cooper
Karen Cooper, 49, passed away May 13, 2002. Born in Alabama, Karen lived in the Akron/Uniontown areas most of her life. She graduated from Kent State University and was a third grade teacher for St. Mary's Catholic School in Akron. Karen was a member of Eastern Star, Past Worthy Advisor, Rainbow Girls and Advent Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Randy; daughters, Jennifer (Marie) and Julie Cooper; parents, Howard and Phyllis VanScoy; brother, Mike VanScoy all of Alquippa, PA; sisters, Cynthia Spearmen of Covington, Ga. and Denice Mills of Houston, Tex. Katherine L. Williams
Katherine L. Williams, age 85, of Canton, OH, passed away Monday evening in the Altercare of Canton. Born in Guernsey Co., Ohio on June 29, 1916 she had lived the greater portion of her life in Canton. She was the former owner and operator, along with her husband Tiny of the Elgin Cycle and Grocery Store. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilbur Tiny Aderholt who passed away March 27, 1964 and her second husband, Ernest C. Williams, who passed away in 1975. She has no immediate family. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the North Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Tucker officiating. There will be no calling hours and the Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rexford L. Taylor
Rexford L. Taylor, age 71, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his home. He was born in Oil City, PA, Aug. 10, 1930, to the late Rexford A. and Melinda Taylor. Rex was retired from Downtown Ford and he had attended the Paradise United Church of Christ in Louisville. He was a member of the Porsche Club. Preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Taylor. Survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Stephen Nervo of Louisville; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Caroline Taylor of Bay Village, OH; two grandchildren, Taylor Victoria Nervo and Cameron Lewis Taylor. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Stier-Israel Funeral Home of Louisville with Rev. Dr. Kline Roberts III officiating. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Louisville. Robert A. Banta, Sr.
Robert Allen Banta, Sr., age 58, of Dellroy, OH, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, May 12, 2002 following an apparent heart attack. Born in Hannibal, MO, Dec. 2, 1943 to his parents the late Warren Russell and Lovie C. (Stringer) Banta, he lived most of his life in the Canton area and was a 1962 graduate of Timken High School. He was currently Vice President of P.J.'s Fabricating Inc. Mr. Banta was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and National Reining Horse Assoc. He died doing what he enjoyed most which was riding his horses. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Survived by his loving wife, Theresa Banta of the home to whom he would have been married 12 years, Nov. 16, 2002; three sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Banta Jr. of Port Orange, FL, Joseph and Starla Banta of Malvern, OH, David Banta of Bellingham, WA; three brothers, Russell Banta of Indiana, James Banta of East Canton, OH, Gary Banta of Canton; four grandchildren, Tailor, Courtney, Jesse and Dallas. He will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond L. Tucker officiating. Visitation for the immediate family and friends will be two hours prior to the services Wednesday 5-7 p.m. At the request of the family his body has been cremated.

Robert L. Mcallister
Robert L. Mcallister (Baby Boy), age 31, passed away Sunday evening, May 12, 2002, in Arbors Nursing Home of complications from gunshot wounds. He had attended GlenOak High School and was a member of Dueber United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joan Camille Mcallister and William Keith Mcallister. Will be dearly missed by his fiancee and best friend of five years, Christine M. Naugle; dearly missed by brothers, John L. Mcallister of West Virginia and Richard A. Mcallister; nieces and nephews and many friends. He was self-employed in lawn care. Memorial services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. in Dueber United Methodist, 645 Dueber Ave. SW, Canton, OH, with Dr. Chester Harris and Rev. Grace Baughman officiating. There will be no calling hours. At his request, his body has been cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the funeral home for funeral expenses. The Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
