Bettie Kehl
Bettie (Marie C.) Kehl, age 84, passed away on April 11, 2002 in Richland, Washington with her family at her side. She died following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She will be cremated. A memorial service will be held later in the year when her remains are placed in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton, Ohio. Born April 17, 1917 in Wilkinsburg (near Pittsburgh), PA to Edgar and Marie Clark, Bettie attended Wilkinsburg High School and obtained advanced training as a secretary and bookkeeper. She worked as the secretary and bookkeeper for her father's auto repair facility. In her mid-twenties, Bettie went to work as a secretary at the Gulf Research and Development Lab in Harmarville, PA. It was there that she met her future husband, William (Bill) Kehl, a physicist and crystallographer. They made their home on a farm in Fox Chapel, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Bettie's lifelong hobby was herb gardening and the use of herbs in cooking and healing. She was an officer of the Picadilly Herb Society in Pittsburgh, and a hard working member of the National Herb Society. Bettie was a well known authority on the cultivation of herbs. She kept her son and daughter out of mischief during their formative years by requiring them to repaint the white picket fence around her vast herb garden each summer. She was also an excellent cook who could make a tasty meal from whatever could be collected from the garden on short notice. She rarely ever referred to a recipe. Her cinnamon rolls were legendary. For more than 20 years, Betty owned and operated the Polycrystal Book Service, supplying technical books and manuscripts to the world-wide scientific community. Often she was the only source of technical books for scientists in under-developed countries. She was the only book dealer who would extend credit to those impoverished individuals. Her business travels took her to all corners of the developed and under-developed world, and she was on a first name basis with many leading physicists of the day. She was enthusiastically known as Bettie the Book Lady. When Bill retired from Gulf, they moved to Louisville, OH, to be near Bill's family. For nearly ten years, Bettie provided 24-hour in-home care for Bill as his health deteriorated from Parkinson's disease. Upon Bill's death, Bettie became very active in community volunteer organizations. She was very active in the construction and maintenance of the gardens at the Hoover Historical Society. She frequently dressed in period costume and conducted public tours of the gardens. Bettie also volunteered as a secretary at the Juliard Senior Center in Louisville. She was famous for organizing Victorian tea parties for the ladies. Older than most of the seniors at the Center, she often joked that her job was to take care of all those old folks! Bettie was a member of the Paradise United Church of Christ in Louisville and was active in the design and upkeep of their Peace garden. She organized the Hat Ladies who would wear Victorian hats and sit together during services. Bettie enjoyed spending one month each summer at her son and daughter-in-law's mountain vacation home in Joseph, Oregon. Each afternoon, she would sit under her favorite pine tree next to the tumbling stream and read until she fell asleep. She often said that she loved the spot because it was so peaceful. In April 1998, Bettie moved to Richland, Washington to be closer to her son. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Millie Clark of Fox Chapel, PA; son and daughter-in-law, Denny and Linda Kehl of Richland, WA; daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Jay Miller of Uniontown, PA; granddaughter, Edie Periera of Richland, WA; grandson, Mike Kehl of Seattle, WA; and in-laws, Dorothy Kehl, Larry and Martha Kehl, Donald and Ruth Kehl all of Louisville, OH, Ray and Annabelle Kehl of San Antonio, TX, Wesley and Rosemary Kehl of Indianapolis, IN, Esther Rampton of Jacksonville, FL and Fred and Eileen Schneiter of Cincinnati, OH.
