Albert O'Mealy, Jr.
Albert H. O'Mealy, Jr., age 79, died early Tuesday morning April 9, 2002, at Austin Woods Rehabilitation Center in Austintown from injuries received in an automobile accident on February 5, 2002. A native of Williamsport, PA. He had resided in the Alliance area since 1945. He retired as Superintendent of the Weld Shop from E.W. Bliss in Salem, after working for over 27 years. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lutsch O'Mealy with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June. Other survivors are daughters, Susanne Tarnovich (Ron) of Charlotte, NC., and Constance Mentzer (Timothy) of Austintown; grandchildren, Jennifer May (John) of Alliance and Douglas Tarnovich (Claudia) of Orlando. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Sherry O'Mealy and brother-in-law, Fred Cristini of Williamsport. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert O'Mealy; a brother, Thomas L. O'Mealy; and sister, Margaret Cristini all of Williamsport; and his mother, Beatrice (Mitcheltree) Braunbeck of Alliance. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alliance, where he had served as a Sunday School Teacher, Council Member and 30 year Choir Member. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class and Club 55. During WWII, Albert was a Gunner's Mate on an L.C.S.L. at the landings on Okinawa and Saipan. A 50 year Mason and 33rd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton he had served in the following positions: Past Master of J.E. McFadden Lodge #697, Past Most Wise Master, Brenton Chapter of Rose Croix, Past Sovereign of Holyrood Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine and Past Patron of Alliance Chapter #296 Order of Eastern Star. He also held membership in the York Rite Bodies, Chapter, Council and Commandry in Alliance. He was also a member of Tadmor Shrine in Akron and member of the Alliance Shrine Club. He was a former member of the Scottish Rite Brigade. He will be remembered for his various portrayals in the Masonic Degrees. Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday April 12, 2002 with a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 13, 2002. There will also be visitation at the church one hour preceding the funeral. Anthony M. (Lambrakis) Couto
Anthony M. (Lambrakis) Couto, age 52, of Cleveland, and also of Canton, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2002 in Lexington, KY after a brief illness. He was born in Canton, OH then moved to Cleveland. He was a member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. He was retired from the Navy after 22 years of service and was a Petty Officer E6. After his retirement, he was employed as a private investigator in Cleveland area. Preceded in death by his parent, Joseph C. and Bessie Jane (Lambrakis) Couto. Survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph M. and Jennie Couto of Lexington, KY, Christopher Michael Couto of Kenosha, WI; grandson, Anthony Couto; a sister, Kathryn Wayda of Parma, OH; special aunt, Helen Cotopolis of Canton. Services will be held Friday, April 2002 with a brief prayer service at 10:30 a.m. in the Rossi Funeral Home, additional services Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Haralambos Greek Church with Rev. Fr. Michael Pastrikos as officiant. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home. Audrey J. Lawrence
Audrey J. Lawrence, 97, of Ocean Trail Nursing Home formerly of Canton, OH., died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Southport, NC. Born in Massillon, OH., on December 30, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Lake and Cynthia Snyder Tasker. Mrs. Lawrence was the oldest living retiree of the Canton Repository, and was a member of the First Christian Church of Canton. Survivors include a son, Deane Lawrence and wife, Joan, of Southport, NC; two grandchildren, Charles Lawrence of Jacksonville, FL., Pamela Cole of Clinton, OH; eight great - grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2002, in the North Lawn Cemetery, Canton, OH.

Charleston E. McPherson
Charleston Mike E. McPherson, age 77, of Massillon, passed away Monday at Doctor's Hospital. He was born on November 5, 1924 in Indiana to the late Harold and Lottie McPherson. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. Charleston was a retired fireman with Marin County in California. He has lived in the Massillon area since 1987 and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Clark in 2001; and brothers, Harold and Adrian McPherson. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rose Marie (Valentine) McPherson of the residence; daughter, Tina Dasco of California; step-daughter, Rose Mary Fletcher of California; step-sons and step daughters-in-law, Joe Clark of Canton, Thomas F. and Karen Clark of Massillon, Gregory and Suzanne Clark of California, Christopher and Tracy Clark of Canton, Timothy J. and Dawn Clark of Massillon; brothers, Robert McPherson of California, Wendell McPherson of California; 11 grandchildren; Roman Dasco, Natalie Clark, Jennifer Clark, Emily Clark, Shawn Martin, Ryan Clark, Nicole Clark, Brandon Clark, Benjamin Clark, Cory Clark and Katie Clark; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Clark and Kayden Fricke; and numerous nephews and nieces. Cynthia K. Slabaugh
Cynthia K. Slabaugh, age 56, of Canton, OH, passed away Tuesday morning, April 9, 2002, in the residence following an extended illness. Born in Canton, OH, January 29, 1946 to her parents the late Earl and Evelyn Baxter, she was currently an employee of Portage Electric Products. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Judy and her brother, Otis Baxter. Survivors include her husband, Clarence D. Slabaugh of the home to whom she was married 36 years; three children, Jacqueline Slabaugh of Navarre, OH, Martin Boots Slabaugh of Canton, OH, Eric Slabaugh of the home; her sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Kenneth Richards of Canton; one granddaughter, Kayla Slabaugh of Canton, OH; numerous nieces; and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday 10:30 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Propst officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. David D. Augustine
David D. Augustine, age 48, of Canton, died early Tuesday morning in Mercy Medical Center. Born Aug. 2, 1953 in Grove City, PA, he was a truck driver for Dalton Trucking Co. for many years. He was a member of Hanoverton Christian Church. Preceded in death by his mother, Lois Augustine. Survivors include his wife, Connie of Canton; his father and stepmother, Dale and Gail Augustine of Alliance, OH; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Walter Snyder of Hanoverton, Donna and Denny Snyder of Salem, OH, Diana and J.R. Moyer of Canton, Peggy Sue Morrow of North Carolina; one brother, Charles T. Augustine of Texas; four stepchildren, Audrey, Lewis and Amy Tucker, April and Gary Craven; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. in the Reed Funeral home. There will be no calling hours.
Dorothy C. Welch
Dorothy C. Welch, age 74, of Canton, died Tuesday in the Arbors following an extended illness. Daughter of the late Charles and Lucille (Booth) Allen. Preceded in death by her husband Allen Welch. Survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Julie and John Musisca of Canton, Jane Bruder of Beach City; one son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Linda Allen of Georgia; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Andy Allen. Eileen R. Class
Eileen R. (Geyer) Class, age 83, of Magnolia, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at Aultman Hospital. She was born in Strasburg, OH, July 3, 1918 to the late, Frank and Marie (Stanley) Dreher. Eileen was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple, and the Jolly Sixties. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Class; a son, William H. Geyer, Sr.; and two brothers, Ralph (Bud) and Donald Dreher. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Genetta and Joseph Campitelli of Louisville; a sister, Irene Humphrey of Canton; a brother, Charles Dreher of Canton; two grandchildren, Scott L. Fox and J.R. Geyer both of Canton. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Stier-Israel Funeral Home, Louisville. Friends may call one hour before services on Friday. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memory Garden.
Eugene O. Hatfield
Eugene O. Hatfield, age 82, of North Canton and Naples, FL, died Tuesday afternoon in the Canton Regency after an extended illness. Born in Kirksville, MO on February 8, 1920, Mr. Hatfield began his career with the Hoover Company in 1948. Following numerous field positions in sales he became General Manager of Hoover Latina, Executive Vice President of Hoover American Latina, Field Sales Manager of Marketing in the Home Office of North Canton, and retired in 1985 as Vice President of Marketing. An avid golfer Gene was a member of Brookside Country Club, and Imperial Golf Club of Naples, FL. Preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva in 1963. He is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Hatfield; son, Larry Gene (June) Hatfield of Chesterfield, MO; two step-children, William (Diana) Dutton of California and Nancy Potter of Washington, DC; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be on Saturday 2 p.m. in the Spiker-Foster-SHRIVER Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave NW, with Dr. Alan F. Kimber officiating. J.B. Byers, formerly of Canton and more recently of Maysville, GA., died in his home on Tuesday April 9, 2002 following an extended illness. Mr. Byers was retired from the Timken Co. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Byers of the home; his mother, Katie Bruce of Lawrenceville, GA; two sons, Jay B. Byers of Canton and Arthur Byers of Maysville, GA; two daughters, Tammy James and Pamela Young of Maysville, GA. Joel F. Hathaway
Joel F. Hathaway, age 40, went home to be with the Lord on April 9, 2002, after a courageous 15-year battle with cancer. Born in Massillon, OH, on January 27, 1962. He was a loving husband to wife, Melody (Millar) for 17 years. Joel graduated from Jackson High School in Massillon. He attended Akron University and Marion Technical School of Nursing. He was employed at Worthington Christian Village in Worthington, Ohio for 10 years. He volunteered for Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He had actively participated in football and baseball while living in Massillon. He enjoyed sports, astronomy, music, reading, traveling and spending time with friends and family. Joel bravely underwent three bone marrow transplants at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus in order to beat his disease. Joel was an inspiration and a role model for many. He spoke at many support groups encouraging others to be a survivor like him. He taught us all how to live one day at a time and to live each day to the fullest. Joel is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Melody; his parents, Jerome and Mildred Hathaway; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerome (Mary), Jeff (Vicky), Jonathan (Margaret), Jason (Ellen); nephews, Jerome, Jeffery, Alex and Ian; nieces, Lisa, Stacey, Ashley, McKenna and Morgan; father and mother-in-law, Roland and Sally Millar; brother-in-law, Marty Miller and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pilacki; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Hathaway; aunts and uncles and beloved family dog Rufus. Joseph J. Dearman, age 48, formerly of Canton and more recently residing in Pompano Beach, FL., passed away Sunday at the home. Born in Canton on November 15, 1953, he was a 1971 graduate of Canton South High School; and a graduate of the Calhoon MEBA Engineering School in Baltimore, MD. He was a retired employee of the Lykes Shipping Lines Inc., where he had worked for 20 years. He had attended Bethel Temple Assemblies of God Church. Survivors include his wife, Bettie Dearman of Canton; daughter, Ericka Dearman of Canton; and son, Zachary Dearman of Canton; stepson, Michael Blevins of Florida; his mother, Laverda Dearman of Canton; his father and stepmother, Frank and Daryl Dearman of Canton; brother, Daniel Dearman of Canton; and two sisters, Amy Simon of Canton and Candace Pryor of Pompano Beach, FL. Margaret T. Davis
Margaret T. Davis, age 79, of Massillon, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Massillon Community Hospital, following an extended illness. She was born July 6, 1922, in Canton, and had resided in Massillon, Canton area her entire life. She was a graduate of St. Peters Catholic Grade school, and Mt. Marie High School in Canton, Class of 1940. She was a member of St. Joseph Church Parish in Massillon, AARP, and had worked as a candy dipper at Sugar Bowl for 50 yrs. She is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Samuel J. and Susan Davis, and Michael I. and Veronica Davis all of Massillon, two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah A. (Davis) and David Young of Massillon, and Michele M. (Davis) and David Hoffman of Green, Ohio, brother, Francis Aowad of Massillon, sister, Mary Williams of Canton, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph S. David (died 1981), her parents, Simon J. and Zahwee (Colell) Aowad; a brother, Brother Elias Aowad, S. J., and a sister Julie Gulling. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Church on Friday, April 12, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Raymond Paul officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Massillon. Mary E. Reed
Mary E. Libby Reed, age 83, of Canton, died Tuesday in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born January 15, 1919 in Huntington, WV to the late Edgar and Hazel Corum. She was retired from Delicious Cream Bakery where she had been a cake decorator. She had also been a cake decorator at Lavern's Bakery and had worked at the Timken Company during World War II. Preceded in death by her husband, George W. Reed in 1972; one brother, Lloyd Corum; and one sister, Alma Corum. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathleen Reed of Canton; one daughter, Karen Speelman of North Canton; five grandchildren, Sheri McCray, Brennan Arnold, Ryan Reed, Terry Speelman, Jr. and Robyn (Tedd) Guedel; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Michael McCray; and two brothers, Gene Corum of Morgantown, WV and Edgar Corum of Huntington, WV. It was Libby's request that her funeral services remain private for her family and that there be no flowers sent for her services.

Tommie Lee Grewe, age 40, of Marlboro, died at Alliance Community Hospital Monday, April 8, at 9:25 p.m. Mrs. Grewe was formerly employed by M.K. Morse in Canton. She was the daughter of Margaret Peg (Augustein) Bevington and the late Thomas L. Bevington. Survived by her husband, Scott P. Walter Edward Millard
Walter Edward Millard, age 86, of North Canton, passed away Wednesday April 10, 2002, in Aultman Hospital. Born August 15, 1915 in Alliance, he graduated from Alliance High School and attended Ohio State University. Mr. Millard was an engineer with The Hoover Company and retired in 1985 after 38 years of service. He was a member of Hartville Church of the Brethren, Industrial Management Club, Hoover Lodge #770 FAM and Scottish Rite Valley of Canton. Preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Elizabeth (Oyster) Millard, his wife, Charlotte Ann Millard on October 27, 2001 and a brother Wade Millard. Survivors include a daughter Linda Ann Cox of Citrus Heights, CA., son and daughter-in-law Steven and Cynthia Millard of East Rochester, OH.; two grandchildren, Susanne Rittenhouse and Cynthia Cox and a great granddaughter, Lauren Rittenhouse, all of Sacramento, CA.; a sister Virginia Pontius of Akron; three brothers, Robert Millard of Hollidaysburg, PA;, Lorin Millard of Bonita Springs, FL and Ralph Wendell Millard of Alliance, OH. Wilfred E. Tabb, Jr.
Wilfred E. Tabb, Jr., age 74, of Canton, passed away suddenly Tuesday evening in Aultman Hospital. He was born in Cleveland, a son of the late Wilfred E. and Goldie Manson Tabb, Sr., and had been a Canton resident since 1990, previously residing in Euclid many years. He had attended Fenn College for two years. Mr. Tabb was a retired Vice-President of Atlas Verticle Filing Systems, Inc., a small manufacturing company in Cleveland. He was a member of Presbyterian Church of The Covenant, which he served as Elder and Deacon; a 50 year member and Past Master of Cleveland Heights Lodge #651, F A.M. and now a member of Canton Lodge #60, F. A.M. He also was a member of all York Rite Bodies in Cleveland. Mr. Tabb served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and received the Purple Heart. Preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Katherine Jane Tabb, on July 9, 1996, and a grandson, Elliott Dauffenbach-Tabb. Survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Catharine J. Tabb-Bigler, M.D. and William Bigler, of Canton; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Wilfred E. Tabb III, Ph.D. and Dr. Vera Dauffenbach, Ph.D., of Green Bay, WI; one granddaughter, Hilary Dauffenbach-Tabb, of Green Bay; a cousin, Jean Howell, of Lyndhurst, OH; and a special friend, Vivian Geltz, of Canton.
