Donald Fording, Jr.
Donald M. Fording, Jr., age 75, of Alliance, OH., died at Akron General Hospital, Thursday, March 28, 2002. Son of the late Donald M. Sr., and Nora Irene (Stockburger) Fording. He was employed at White Engines / Hercules in Canton for 25 years, after his retirement in 1989, he was employed at Permco Machine Co., in Streetsboro, for five years, retiring in 1994. Former employee of Limoge China Co. in Sebring. An Army Veteran of World War II, Company B 511th. Parachute Infantry. He was a member of Sebring Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Vera (Hutmacher) Fording, who he married December 3, 1955; daughters, Mrs. Tibi (Cheryl Dawn) Marian and Mrs. Jim (Pamela Kathleen) Fording-Laphman both of Alliance, Mrs. Randy (Ann Yvonne) Wilson of N. Canton, and Darlene Vera Metts of Orlando, FL; son, Mr. Donald Samuel and Theresa Fording of Alliance; sister, Esther Louise Candusso of Alliance; brother, Frank R. Fording of Stow; 16 grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Betty Jane Fording and Mildred Ruth Fording Hawkins Wayt; and a brother, Alan L. Fording. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 1, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. in the Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home, Sebring, OH., with Dr. James Doty officiating. Interment in Highland Memorial Park. Calling hours Sunday, March 31, 2002, from 2-9 p.m. with the family present from 7-9 p.m.
Doris E. Ward-Malm
Doris Dusty E. Ward-Malm, 73, passed away Wednesday, March, 27, 2002. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind her brother, Ret. SGM Donald E. Beebe; sister, Muriel Kuehn; children, Rebecca Horton and family, Deborah Sorrell and family, Donald (Ladd) Ward and family, John Ward and family, Douglas Ward and family, Tracy Wheeler and family, Matthew Scott Ward and family, Shannon Chamblee and family, Bridget Apodaca and family, Gretchen Ward; father of children, Donald G. Ward; 29 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Scott, Michelle, Kathy and Pam Malm; best loving friend, Gloria Lujan; several relatives, friends and neighbors. Services will be held at Grace Apostolic Church, 1301 3rd St. S.W., in Albuquerque, on Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at 10 a.m., with Pastor Gilbert Apodaca officiating. EdithAnn Downey Jefferson, age 50, of Canal Fulton for 33 years died Friday, March 29, 2002 at her home after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 127 Cherry Rd., Massillon. Friends may call Monday 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, Rt 93, Canal Fulton and one hour prior to service Tuesday at the church. Kay K. Novak
Kay K. Novak, age 62, of Canton, died Friday in her home after a short illness. She was a life resident of Canton and was a 1958 graduate of Central Catholic High School. Kay was a former employee of WOAC-TV and Eller Media, and was presently employed at Canton Plating Co. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and St. Michael's Ladies Guild. Preceded in death by her parents, Cletus and Evalene (McKimm) Kast, and a brother, Cletus Kast, Jr. Survived by her husband of 40 years, Joseph A. Novak; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph A. II and Diane Novak of Canton, and Timothy J. and Cindy Novak of N. Canton; a daughter, Tammy Novak of Massillon; four grandchildren, Breanna, Alex, Nicole and Heather Novak; a sister, Darlene Barkan of Canton; a brother and two sisters-in-law, George and Annie Kast of North Olmsted, OH; and Barbara Kast of Louisville, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Zamary as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Larrie Stortz
Larrie Stortz, age 58, of Longford, KS, passed away March 28, 2002, in Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center, Topeka, KS. He was born November 5, 1943 in Canton, OH, to his parents George Stortz and Dorothy Fortney. He served in the US Army as an MP. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include daughter, Bonnie Abouswid of Longford, KS; son, Joseph Stortz of San Leandro, CA; three grandchildren; and mother, Dorothy Stortz of St. Petersburg, FL. Graveside services Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Rose Meron Cemetery in Clay County, KS with Pastor Steve Thadden officiating. Burial in Rose Meron Cemetery, Clay County, KS. Mary B. Calabretta
Mary B. Calabretta, age 76, of North Canton, passed away Thursday afternoon with her family at her bedside. Born in Kamay, TX, she had lived in the Canton and North Canton areas since 1946. A retired bookkeeper for the Mayfair Restaurant which her husband Joe Kelly was the owner. Mary was a member of the Southern Baptist Church and was an avid tennis player and golfer. She loved gardening and painting portraits, was an avid movie buff, and had a love for poetry and plays. Preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Carrol (Norman) Hasley; brother, Marion Hasley; great-granddaughter, Angela Calabretta. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph Calabretta Sr.; son, Joseph Calabretta Jr. and Betty Fryfogle of Massillon; daughter and son-in-law, Carrol and John Ostrum of North Canton; grandsons, Joseph Paul and Eric Joseph Calabretta; brother and sister-in-law, Mickey and Patty Hasley of Dallas, TX; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Joseph Pontino of Hubbard, OH; sister-in-law, Vickey Sabella; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Danny and Lovella Calabretta; many loving nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Sunday 6-9 p.m. in the Rossi Funeral Home and Monday one hour before services 10-11 a.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Robert Graber officiating. Mary Ellen Piper
Mary Ellen Piper, age 84, of Massillon, passed away Thursday at Altercare of Navarre. Mary Ellen was born January 1, 1918 in Strasburg to the late Earl W. and Ruth M. (Lab) Spindler and lived most of her life in Massillon. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Piper in 1972 and a sister, Margaret Ann Spindler in 1976. She is survived by her aunt, Mary Alice Breitmeier of Bolivar and a cousin, Trudy Hobart of New Philadelphia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massillon, her pastor Fr. Raymond Paul will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be no calling hours and the procession will form at the church Monday morning.
Mary Lou Slayman
Mary Lou (Leahy) Slayman, died in her home on March 26, 2002 in the loving care of her husband, Donald E. Slayman and family. Best friend, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She brought life to the home with her decorations of love. Forever in Donald's Eye's she will be the most beautiful lady that ever lived. Memorial Mass of repose will be held Monday April 1, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church. As was Mary's wish there will be no calling hours. Cremation will be handled by Schneeberger Son Inc. Funeral Home. Before her death, Mary asked that there be no flowers or donations made at the time of her death. Her only desire was that those who choose spend a few silent moments in earnest prayer.
Pauline Erbland
Pauline Erbland, age 90, of Canton, died Friday, March 29, 2002 in Aultman Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Karlo Sons Funeral Home.
Vera T. Oberster
Vera T. (Casali) Oberster, age 73, of North Canton, passed away Wednesday evening in her home. Born in Canton, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Angela Casali and was a 1946 graduate of Central Catholic High School. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in North Canton, coordinator of the Senior Luncheon Group at St. Paul's, a former member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Little Flower Altar and Rosary Society, the Garden Club at Little Flower, and the church choir. She was also a former member of the Santa Marie Club and a past Cub Scout den mother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl and infant brother, Orlando Casali, infant sister, Antoinette Casali and sister, Adelaide M. Dreussi. Vera is survived by her husband of 46 years, Arthur E. Oberster of the home; sons, Roderick A. Oberster, and his wife, Karen of Pickerington, OH, Joseph A. Oberster of East Canton, Jeffrey A. Oberster, and his companion, Arne Klein of Cleveland Heights, OH; daughters, Cynthia L. Favilla, and her husband, John of North Canton, Heidi A. Nicodemo, and her husband, Richard of North Canton, Angela M. Eckinger, and her husband, Robert of Dalton, OH; sisters, Beatrice DiNarda of North Canton, Mary Beth Keeton of Bronson, FL, Malvina Caiazza of North Canton; grandchildren, Melissa, Ricky, Annaliese, Richard, Jackie, Matthew, Anthony, Katie, Stephen, Karissa, Kyle, Joshua, Jacob; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, North Canton, with Msgr. James A. Clarke as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Monday 6-9 p.m. in the Wackerly Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, North Canton, or Mercy Hospital Visiting Nurses and Hospice.
