Betty R. Golden
Betty R. Golden, age 70, of 1072 Federal Ave. Alliance, OH, departed this life on March 23, 2002 at 4:20 a.m. at Alliance Community Hospital after a sudden illness. A lifetime resident of the area, she was born April 23, 1931 in Sebring, OH, the daughter of George and Vera Ross Heinz. Mrs. Golden retired after 25 years of service as licensed practical surgical nurse at Alliance Community Hospital. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church of Alliance, and was a member of the Missionary Society, Adult Sunday School and Morning Prayer Band, and enjoyed reading and collecting elephants. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 51 years, George P. Golden, Sr., whom she married on October 8, 1950; three sons, George P. (Virginia) Golden, Jr., of Cleveland, OH, Roderick A. Golden of Alliance, OH, and Ernest W. (Karen) Golden of Akron; one daughter, Teresa D. Golden-Sims of Alliance, OH; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Vera Ross Heinz; one brother, Donald Heinz; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy J. Woods-Golden. Family representatives will receive friends as the body lies in state on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 from 5-7 p.m. at the Sibley-Murray Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at New Zion Baptist Church where friends may call from 10 a.m. until Noon. Arrangements and professional services were handled by Sibley-Murray Funeral Home, Alliance.

Beulah M. Long, age 92, of Big Prairie, OH, passed away Sun. March 24, 2002. Preceded in death by husband, Chester; two brothers; one sister; one grandson and one great-grandson. Survived by children, Dean Foster of Wooster, Keith Foster of Tampa, FL, Wanda Stallman-Kendel of Green, Nancy Bly of Akron; sister, Lelah Kemerer of Paris, IL; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-granchildren. services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Ripley Church of Christ with Jim Platner and Ken Mulpas officiating. Dennis A. Pennington Sr.
Dennis A. Pennington Sr., age 40 of Massillon, OH, passed away unexpectedly Monday evening, March 25, 2002 in Mercy Medical Center following an apparent heart attack on March 16th. Born in Cleveland, OH, September 22, 1961, he lived most of his life in the Canton-Massillon area and was a graduate of Buckeye Trail High School in Old Washington, OH. Mr. Pennington was currently an employee of Roadway Express and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Pennington and granddaughter, Savannah Pennington. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl (Dugan) Pennington of the home to whom he was married 20 1/2 years; three children, Dennis A. Pennington Jr. and his wife, Valerie of Massillon, OH, Charles Robert Pennington of the home, Jesse Dakota James Pennington of the home, his mother, Sharon Clegg of Byesville, OH; his brother, Lynn Pennington of Raeford, NC; his sister, Mellody Pennington of Parkersburg, WV; one grandson, Jacob Allen Pennington; his special friend and cousin, Jan Smerz of Beach City, OH. There are numerous nieces and nephews also surviving. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday 7:00 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. James Allen officiating. Calling hours at the funeral home two hours prior to services on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. At the request of the family, his body will be cremated following the services. Emily R. Warburton, age 99, of North Canton, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in Manor Care in Belden Village. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Bruce Cox of North Canton; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1993 and son, Robert, in 1974. Funeral services will be conducted Friday in the Community Christian Church at 12 p.m. with Dr. Donald G. Baird officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Gladys M. Deardorff
Gladys M. Deardorff, age 88, of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN passed away March 25, 2002. Born February 17, 1914 in Hartville, OH, to the late Aaron and Lottie (Carper) Kinsley. She was former owner of the Deardorff Restaurant and Deardorff Confectionery both at Hartville, OH. She was also secretary at the Akron (OH) Savings Loan. She was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren and a graduate of Hartville High School and from Manchester College. She married the late Harry H. Deardorff on June 14, 1935. He died January 28, 1994. Survived by two sons, Barry (Arlene) Deardorff of Glenview, IL, Darryl (Juanita) Deardorff of Elgin, IL; brothers, Evan Kinsley of North Manchester, IN, Gene Kinsley of Dayton, FL, Keith Pontius of Fairfield Glade, TN; sisters, Bette Gump of Trotwood, OH; two grandchildren, Duane (Darla Kay) Deardorff, Durham, NC and Dana (Vicki) Deardorff of San Francisco, CA; one great-grandchildren. Gussie Mae McQuay
Gussie Mae McQuay, went home to sleep in death on March 23, 2002 in Aultman Hospital unexpectantly. Gussie Mae Mackey was born February 22, 1925 in Newton, GA. She was employed to the Ohio Power Company and retired after 15 years of service. She enjoyed talking to people, gardening and cooking. She was preceded in death by her parents, Augusta and Leona Hall Mackey; step-father, Jesse Jones; brothers, Willie Mackey Sr., and Bennie Mackey; sisters, Elizabeth Mackey and Elizabeth Robinson. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Robert J. McQuay Sr; two daughters, June (Alvin) Whitehurst, Judy (Wilsheard) Blackshear; two sons, Robert J. McQuay Jr., and Reginald McQuay; (Like a son) Joseph Holmes; six grandchildren, Quinn (Diane) Whitehurst, Leslie Whitehurst, Justin Blackshear, Nicole Blackshear, Robert McQuay III., Alexandria Chamlers; brother, Augusta (Rose) Mackey; sister-in-law, Ruth Mackey; special niece and nephews, Mary Strachan and Willie (Mary) Mackey and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Halim Assaad Faltas. Rested in the hope of resurrection and eternal life Monday March 25th at his home in Jackson Township Engineer Halim Assaad Faltas. Born 8-26-1911 in El-Meniah, Egypt. Mr. Faltas graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt in 1939, with a degree in construction engineering, He held the director of Engineering position with Shell Petroleum and Excavating Company in Sinai, Egypt and The General Company for Mineral Resources, Cairo, Egypt. Mr. Faltas lived a blessed life in the Christian faith and the love of God, his family and everyone he met. He left behind him his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Souraya Fares and daughters Marie-Therese Faltas, MD, MPH of South Carolina, Amal H. Assaad, MD, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, wife of Raouf Amin, MD, Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Manal H. Assaad, Ophthalmologist, Glaucoma and Eye Specialists, Inc., wife of Nabil Fahmy, MD, Gastroenterology and Hepatology Specialist, Inc. of Canton. Mr. Faltas left behind his six grandchildren Maryse, Annie and Lissa Amin and Joseph, Natalie and Alexander Fahmy. Harold D. Smith
Harold D. Smith, age 89, of Waynesburg, passed away Monday morning, March 25, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness. Born Aug. 25, 1912, in Franklin, NC, to the late Lawrence and Sally (Williamson) Smith and had lived in our area since 1950. He was employed for 23 years as a janitor for the Timken Co. of Canton, retiring Feb. 1, 1978. Survived by his wife, the former Beatrice (Bea) Dills, whom he married Oct. 18, 1934; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Frances and Urban Pendergrass of East Canton, Peggy Helen and Thomas Cooper of Nashville, TN, Polly Visnick of Canton; one son, Jay Smith of Waynesburg; one sister, Isabelle Williams of Lawrenceville, GA; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Greenwood and Anna Ledford and a brother, Wiley Smith. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002, in the Waltner-Simchak Funeral Home with Rev. Allen Brown officiating. Howard W. Kolberg
Howard W. Kolberg, age 75, of Canton, passed away Tuesday March 26, 2002 in Aultman Hospital. Born in Canton, the son of the late August and Florence Kolberg. A graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of '44. He served his country in W.W. II in the U.S. Army and was attached to the Honor Guard for Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Wm. McKinley Lodge # 431 F. A.M., A.A.S.R.- Valley of Canton. He was a steamfitter with The Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #94 since 1947 where he served terms as President and was currently Secretary of the Retirees Club. He retired from The Standard Plumbing Heating Co. after 45 years of service. Inducted member of Greater Stark County Fumbleball Assoc. He enjoyed flying and computers. Also preceded in death by his sister, Marylyn Kilway. Survived by his wife, Mary Louise (Parks) Kolberg, to whom he was married 56 years; son and daughter-in-law, Howard William and Bonnie Kolberg II; daughter and son-in-law, Diane Louise and William Haslar; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Paul and Sharon Kolberg; grandchildren, Kelley Kolberg, Kimberly (Matt) Hill, Kristin Kolberg, Kerri (Keith) Snyder, Tiffany Haslar, Michael and Elizabeth Kolberg; great grandchildren, Samantha, Kailee, and Sidney; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Harvey Sears; brother-in-law, James Kilway. Ida Mae Manse
Ida Mae Manse, age 81, of Canton, OH, went home to be with the Lord, passing away Tuesday morning in Altercare of Canton following an extended illness. Born in Star City, WV, on March 5, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Pearle Funk. She was a member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Tabernacle. Preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kay Manse and a granddaughter, Carol Lynn Manse. Survivors include her husband, LeRoy J. Manse of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Ann Manse of North Canton, Richard and Joanne Manse of Bradenton, FL, L. John and Beth Manse of Canton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jerry Miller of Louisville, JoAnn and Ron Young of Canton and Jeanne and Tony Virdo of California; her sister, Ada Whittaker of Canton; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren. Julius J. Tonges
Julius J. Tonges, age 76, of Alliance, OH, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Alliance Community Hospital. Born Dec. 16, 1925, to Julius and Anna (Molnar) Tonges in Massillon, OH, he resided in the Alliance area since 1948. He was a graduate of Massillon Washington High School. He received a B.A. from Baldwin Wallace College and a Master's degree from Kent State University. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church. He taught and coached at Alliance High School for 40 years, served 30 years in government for the City of Alliance; ten years as 6th Ward Councilman, seven years Civil Service Commission, two years Councilman-at-Large and four years as mayor, Stark County Regional Planning Commission (SCRPC) for ten years, serving two years as president and four years on the Executive Committee. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survived by wife, Dorothy; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Shawn Wise, all of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cindy Tonges of Canton, OH; grandchildren, Daniel and Stephen Wise and Bradley Tonges. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Glenn Waggamon and Rev. William Sadler officiating. Oscar P. Bartlow
Oscar P. Bartlow, died in Aultman Hospital on Saturday, March 23, 2002, in his 100th year. He was a resident of Canton since 1927. He was a Certified Public Accountant with a private practice for over 50 years. Prior to that he was an instructor of accounting and auditing at the former Canton Actual Business College. He remained a mentor to many of his former students throughout their working careers. In 1927 he was graduated with honors from the former Beckley College, Harrisburg, PA., where he studied accounting. In 1930 he received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the American Extension University, Los Angeles, and in 1935 his certification as a Certified Public Accountant was received from the State of Ohio Board of Accountancy. He was a member of the national Society Sons of the American Revolution based on the service of Daniel Dugan, one of several ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War. Many charitable and educational organizations in the greater Canton area and also in Lycoming County, PA., were his beneficiaries. Oscar was raised a Lutheran but was associated with the First Baptist Church, Canton, for many years. Born in Jordan Township, Lycoming County, PA., on August 11, 1902, Oscar was a son of George M. and Ida M. (Sones) Bartlow. Mr. Bartlow was predeceased by his wife of almost 60 years, the former Adda M. Gardner in 1985; and his son, Carl E. Bartlow in 1992. He was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Harry, Clyde, Rollie, Frank and Thomas Bartlow, Minnie Gordner, Mary Farnsworth and Mabel Watts, all of PA. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Arlene A. Bartlow of New York City, and Betty Jean B.J. and F. Stuart Wilkins of North Canton; grandson, James S. Wilkins and his wife, Jill of Lexington, KY; sisters-in-law, Olive A. Sones of Muncy, PA., and Frances Gardner of Danville, PA; two step-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. Private graveside services were held yesterday with the Rev. Kevin E. Slyh of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in North Lawn Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Lamiell Funeral Home. Stanley J. Kuceyeski
Stanley J. Kuceyeski, age 83, of Louisville, passed away Monday, March 25, 2002, in St. Joseph Care Center following an extended illness. Stan was the son of the late Julius and Stella (Kesicki) Kuceyeski who were immigrants from Poland. He was born November 26, 1918 in Natrona, PA. He and his family moved to Alliance at the age of seven. After graduating from Alliance High School in 1938, Stan participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He later served three and half years in the Army during World War II. Stan received a BS in Education from the Ohio State University, and a master's degree in counseling from Kent State University. A resident of Louisville for all his adult life, he spent a lifetime in education, teaching at Marlboro High School, McKinley High School and Lehman High School. He was later a guidance counselor at Alliance High School. Stan capped his career with 12 years as a placement counselor at Stark State Technical College. Throughout this time, he spent 23 years working part time for Diebold Corporation as an engineer. In addition to a full professional life, marriage, and raising six children, Stan was a devoted and active participant at St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville. Stan leaves behind his wife, Dorothy (Pavelka) with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage on November 10, 2001; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Jo and Thomas Miles of Argonia, KS, and Rayna Alsberg of Palatine, IL; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas Kuceyeski of Alliance, Robert Kuceyeski of Kalahco, HI, David and Joyce Kuceyeski of East Canton and Paul and Sandy Kuceyeski of Louisville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Laura Burchfield of Columbus, Camille and Tony Visi of Del Ray Beach, FL and Nellie and Walter Wood of Ft. Wayne, IN; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Ignatius and John Kuceyeski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Louis Catholic Church with Msgr. Ken Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Parish cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Paquelet-Falk Funeral Home in Louisville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Care Center or St. Louis Catholic Church.
