Alfred Filliez
Alfred Fred Filliez, age 63, passed away Feb. 13, 2002 in his home in Florida after a courageous battle with cancer. A 1956 graduate of Canton South High School. Survivors are wife, Kathy of the home; daughter and granddaughter, Tris and Danielle Moriondo, of FL; two sisters, Trudy Johnson of Canton and Alberta Gulley of North canton; numerous nieces, nephews; and friends. Fred, may you be at peace at last in His arms.
Amerigo Mastreano
Amerigo S. Archie Mastreano, age 93, passed away Friday, February 22, 2002, at Aultman Hospital, following an illness of six weeks. He was born October 19, 1908 in Pitcairn, PA to the late Domenico and Josephine Mastroianni. He lived in Calabria, Italy during his early teenage years, returning to live in the Canton-Massillon area. In 1935 he moved to New Philadelphia where he owned and operated Goodyear Shoe Repair for 26 years. He spend the next 20 years working as a Right of Way agent for the State of Ohio and for Stark County Engineers. Archie was a member of Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia, Porky Club, Canton Ex-Newsboys Association, was one of the original organizers of the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival organization, and many other organizations in Tuscarawas County. In the late 1930's he trained and managed several young men as amateur boxers. Two of them later went on to AAU upper levels and competed in championship matches at Boston Gardens in Massachusetts in 1940. Archie loved opera, classical music, and ballroom dancing. He also loved hunting and fishing and made a wonderful large garden every year. He was preceded in death in 1995 by his wife of 60 years, the former Virginia Antonini of Alliance, whom he wed November 28, 1935. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Treva and Richard Aeling of Canton, with whom he made his home in recent years. In addition, he is survived by grandson, Douglas Aeling of Stratford, CT; granddaughter, Julia Aeling of Chicago, IL; brother and sister-in-law, William and Carmel Mastreano of Massillon; niece, Dorine Firestone of California; nephew, Bill Mastreano of California; six nieces and one nephew by marriage; and many cousins in the Canton area. Calling hours will be Monday 4-7 p.m. at Geib Funeral Home, 116 2nd St. NE, New Philadelphia and one hour before the funeral in Canton at Our Lady of Peace Church, 833 39th St. NW. Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Peace at 11 a.m. Graveside committal services will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alliance, OH. Andrew McCarty Canterbury
Andrew McCarty Canterbury, 85, of Trenton Falls, NY and Fort Myers, FL, died February 9, 2002 after a lengthy fight with leukemia. He was born November 9, 1916 in Canton, OH. The son of Gilbert and Beulah Canterbury, Andy graduated from McKinley High School in Canton in 1934, worked a year in his mother's book store, Canterbury-Crane Bookstore and then entered Hamilton College in Clinton, NY where he graduated in 1939. At Hamilton he was a member of the Charlatons theater group and Delta Upsilon Fraternity. That same year he married Marguerite Pugh, of Utica, NY. At Marguerite's death in 1991 they had been married for more than 52 years. Andy joined the Navy in 1945 and following his stateside military training, served as an ensign with the Seabees and Marines in Sasebo, Japan until late 1946. Andy was employed by the Garlock Packing Company, first as an office manager in Palmyra, NY, and then as the company's sales representative for the northern half of New York State. In 1959 he started up his own mechanical packing company, Utica Packing and Plastics, which he ran for 25 years until his retirement in 1984. He and Marguerite, together with two friends, began a women's clothing shop, Country Classics, in Barneveld, NY. The Canterbury's later bought the entire store which they managed for 25 years. Andy's great passion was the theater and he played many leading roles for the Players Club of Utica. Some of those included Dr. Sanderson in Harvey, Donald Marshall in Irene Henri Trochard in My Three Angels, Lt. Cmdr. Queeg in The Caine Mutiny, William of Sens in The Zeal of Thy House, Henry Drummond in Inherit the Wind, and Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman. He played Scrooge in A Christmas Carol for several years in Utica a the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Museum and on television. He was president of the Players Club of Utica in 1960 and 1961 and served on the board of directors. He was a longtime member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Barneveld where he taught Sunday School and served on the vestry. He was a member of the Fort Schuyler Club in Utica and a charter member and commandant of the Kuyahoora Yacht Club on Hinkley Lake, NY where he could often be found selling his Comet-class sailboat. Andy loved classical music, dark Godiva chocolate, and the yellow house he built and lived in for 40 years by the creek falls on Dover Road in Trenton Falls, NY. He hated blue jeans, coffee mugs and pizza. He was seldom seen without his gold pocket watch and chain and he carried the same Parker 21 fountain pen for 50 years. He always had a white handkerchief in his back pants pocket and looked you right in the eye when he gave you one of his firm handshakes. Andy is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Anne Canterbury, of Eagle River, Alaska; his second wife, Lucy Upson Canterbury, whom he married in August 1998, who now lives in Fort Myers; a grandson, Christopher C. Canterbury and his wife, Michaela and their son Connor McCarty Canterbury, also of Eagle River; and a granddaughter, Heather Canterbury McEwen and her husband Paul, of Long Island, NY. A memorial service will be held this summer, at a date to be announced, at St. David's Episcopal Church in Barneveld. Cleo L. Weller
Cleo L. Weller, age 94, of Canton, died Monday, February 18, 2002 in Canterbury Villa of Alliance following an extended illness. Daughter of the late William and Minnie (Marks) Miller. Resident of East Canton for 45 years, retiring from Rapports Women's Clothier after 30 years of service. Member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church. Preceded in death by her husband, Ross Weller; and two sisters. Survived by one sister, Gladys Green of N. Canton; and one nephew, William Rampage of Louisville. A Graveside service will be Thursday February 28, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Larry Houff officiating. The Myers-Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home in East Canton is in charge of arrangements.
Dolores L. Vaughn
Dolores L. Vaughn, age 71, of North Canton, passed away Friday afternoon in Mercy Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Bernadette Duplain Silverthorn. She was a 1949 graduate of Timken Vocational High School, and she retired from Canton City Schools as a teacher's aide. She was a former member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Theresa B. Vaughn, who died in 1979, and brother, William L. Pat Silverthorn. Dolores is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Vaughn of the home; son, Thomas A. Vaughn of Louisville; daughters, Cynthia L. Vaughn of Atwood Lake, Michele M. Baus, Lisa A. Abraham, Stephanie F. Vaughn, Kimberley J. Lewers, all of Canton; brothers, Frederick and Jane Silverthorn of Sun, AZ, Thomas and Sandra Silverthorn of North Canton, Lawrence Silverthorn of Canton, Jack and Sally Silverthorn of Houston, TX; sisters, Doris and Buck Rick of Canton, Barbara Vinas of Canton, Linda Tucker of Carrollton; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Wackerly Funeral Home with Fr. Thomas Bishop officiating. Friends may call Monday 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. She was kind, funny, and patient. She loved animals, Snoopy and Charlie Brown. Her courage and strength were an inspiration to us all. We will miss her greatly.
Edward Vance
Edward Vance, 31, of Canton, died Saturday in his home after a three month illness. Born in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. He had been a Canton resident for eight years. He was the owner of Roland Lawn Care. Survived by is wife, Linda R. Vance, of the home; his parents, Carol and Ernest Vance, of Dover, OH; his grandmother, Bessie Persall of Left Hand, W.VA; and many loyal friends and family members. Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home. Following the calling hours his body will be cremated.
Gennie P. Thomas
Gennie Philomena (Cammel) Thomas, age 76, of Canton, passed away Friday evening after a long illness. A life resident of Canton, who never left 17th St., she was a 1943 graduate of Canton McKinley High School. A former member of Calvin Presbyterian Church and currently a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, she retired from Danner Press in 1987 after 27 years of service. Preceded in death by her parents, Dominick and Antoinette (Tavonne) Cammel; husband, Clarence W. Thomas in 1991; sister, Nikoletta Rossi; brothers, Frank and Nick Cammel. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Mia Thomas; daughter, Carol Ann Thomas, all of Canton; grandchildren, Benjamin Phillip and Mollie Anna Thomas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vince and Nesta Cammel, Don and Kathy Cammel, all of Canton; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Bridge of Garden Grove, CA, Evelyn Numbers of Canton, Mrs. Donald (Rose) Everhart of Louisville; sister-in-law, Rita Cammel of Canton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jesse R. Thomas
Jesse R. Thomas, age 87, of Canton, died unexpectedly Friday evening in Doctors Hospital. Son of the late Dr. William J. and Margaret Thomas. He was a Louisville area resident for 24 years prior to which he had resided in Canton. Retired from Republic Steel in 1977 after 43 years of service. Former member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #233, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #141, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #68 and the American Bowling Congress for many years. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Gladis L. Thomas in 1999; a granddaughter, Traci Brown; three brothers; and one sister. Survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Grace Thomas; one daughter and son-in-law, Jessie and Terry Brown, all of Canton; two stepdaughters, Joyce and her spouse, V. George Burson of Warren, Brenda Reichard of Wooster; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters. John O. Jack Dresser, age 75, of Cuyahoga Falls, died February 22, 2002. He had been a professor for 30 years at Stark State College of Technology; was Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army; and an active member of the Boy Scouts for 37 years. John R. Thompson, Jr., age 35, of Canton, died unexpectedly Thursday evening. John was born on May 24, 1966, he was a Cleveland Browns fan and loved to fish. Survivors include his parents, John R. Sr. and Ruth Thompson of Canton; one sister and brother-in-law, Dayna and Tom Baker of Canton; one nephew, Alexander J. A.J. Collier and Amanda Nicole Thompson, a very special child in John's life; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom were very important in John's life. Lillian W. Hoffman, age 97, of Canton, passed away Friday morning. She was born November 5, 1904 in Canton, was a life resident of Canton and a member of North Industry United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, Lester in 1970. Survivors include one daughter, Diane Barnett; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Pat Hoffman; one granddaughter and husband, Arleen and Ron Hupp all of Canton; and one grandson, Ron Hoffman, Jr. currently serving in the Navy and stationed in California. Mary F. Radford, age 66, of Canton, died Saturday afternoon in the home following an extended illness. Born July 6, 1935 in Drakesboro, KY. She was retired from the Red Lobster after 20 years of service. Preceded in death by her husband, Otto Radford on July 18, 1987 and her father, Roy E. Dennis in 1982. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, James D. and Arlene Radford, Daniel Radford and one daughter, Edith Kahle, all of Canton; three grandchildren, Douglas Kahle, David Radford and Cassandra Radford; her mother, Gladys Dennis of Canton; two brothers and sister-in-law, Harold W. and Mary C. Dennis and Roy C. Dennis, all of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Richard Schreffler of North Canton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Price
Mary Butterfield Price, age 93, of Rockford, IL, died 12:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center after a short illness. Born Nov. 4, 1908, in Granville, NY, daughter of Harry and Harriet (Roe) Butterfield. Lived six years in Rockford, coming here from Pittsburgh, PA. Graduate of McKinley High School, Canton, OH, in 1927 and the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1931. married Gordon A. Price in Canton, OH, on Dec. 9, 1927; he predeceased her in 1964. She was a fashion illustrator for the Stern Mann Co., Canton, OH until her daughter's birth. Upon the death of her husband, she assumed the directorship of Price Advertising and Display Co., which was founded by her husband and father-in-law. In 1969 she was named chairman of the decoration committee for the Hall of Fame Festival. She was a charter member of Canton Players Guild and an organizer of the Canton Art Institute, formerly the Little Civic Art Gallery. She was a member of the Emanuel Episcopal Church, Rockford; the Fox Chapel Episcopal Church Guild in Pittsburgh, and was on the Quota Club's board of directors. Survivors include daughter, Susan (James) Black of Rockford; granddaughter, Megan Raisley Black of Boston, MA; sister, Jeanne Gill of Canton, OH; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband. Velma M. Wilson
Velma M. Wilson, age 101, a resident of St. Luke Lutheran Home, passed away there Saturday morning. She was born in Carrollton, a daughter of the late William and Mary Rutledge Smeltz, and had been a resident of the Canton area since 1924. Mrs. Wilson was a former schoolteacher in Harlem Springs, OH. Preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur D. Wilson on September 26, 1994, two sons, Dale and Harry, and eight brothers and sisters. She will be lovingly missed by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Wilson and Thomas and Karen Wilson, all of North Canton, and Dorothy Wilson of Canton; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and step-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home with Pastor Jean Hansen of St. Luke Lutheran Home officiating. Interment in Sunset Hills Burial Park.
