Alan Charles Braun
Alan Charles Braun, age 74, long time resident of Atwood Lake, died January 28, 2002 at the Hennis Health Care Center of Bolivar. He was born in Cleveland. He was a graduate of Rhodes High School and the Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He moved to Canton in 1951 and was President of Geiger Insurance Agency for 40 plus years before retiring. He was a former member of the Masonic Fidelity Lodge, the Insurance Board of Canton in which he held various offices and Atwood Yacht Club. He was a Charter Member of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Canton where he was Elder and Treasurer, currently he was a member of Bolivar St. John's United Church of Christ, Bolivar. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia C. Braun; sons, Clarke A. and his wife, Pamela Braun of Dellroy, Douglas A. Braun; grandchildren, Jonathan, Jason, Amy, and Meagan Braun; step granddaughters, Nicole, Heather and Michelle. Funeral service will be held Wednesday January 30, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, Bolivar with Rev. Carol Clements officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday prior to services from 10-11:30 a.m. Burial at North Lawn Cemetery in Canton. Donations may be made to Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Canton, or St. John's United Church of Christ, Bolivar.
Charles W. Clark
Charles W. Clark, age 65, of Canton, died Monday morning in his home following an extended illness. Son of the late Charles E. and Relda Mae (Hockensmith) Clark. He was a life resident of the North Industry area, retiring from National Feedscrew and Machine which was formerly Massillon Steel, in 1999, after 35 years of service. Member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He was a 1954 graduate of Canton South High School and was an avid Canton South baseball, Perry baseball and softball fan, where he supported his grandchildren's athletic programs. He was an Air Force veteran. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis A. (Givins) to whom he was married 44 years; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis Clark of Canton, Bret and Jeanette Clark of Massillon; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Rick Freday of Canton; five grandchildren, Matthew, Tyler and Nicholas Freday, Alicia and Shane Clark. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on South Cleveland Ave. with Rev. Ed Rinehart officiating. Interment in Melscheimer Cemetery. Donald J. Thoma
Donald J. Thoma, age 91, of East Canton, died Monday morning in the Oakhill Manor Care Center following a brief illness. He was born July 24, 1910 in Paris Twp. to the late Jacob and Emma (Mong) Thoma. He was a life resident of the Paris Twp. and East Canton area, retiring from the Osnaburg Local Schools in 1968 after 36 years of service. While he was there he served as Teacher, High School Principal and Superintendent. A graduate of Minerva High School, Mt. Union College and received his masters degree from Kent State University. Member of Mt. Taber United Methodist Church, where he had served as Treasurer for more than 40 years, a 50 year and Charter Member of the East Canton Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Member of the Jr. O.U.A.M., Osnaburg Twp. Historical Society, the Stark County Retired Teachers Assoc., and the AARP, East Canton. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Lucille E. Thoma in 1989; an infant son, Richard; and one sister, Pauline Tomlinson. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Nick Botean of E. Canton; three grandchildren, Stephen Botean and Susan Leslie both of E. Canton, Cindy Leasure of Paris, OH; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Myers- Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home in E. Canton with Rev. David S. Reed officiating. Interment in Center Church Cemetery. Elizabeth I. Smith
Elizabeth Irene Smith, age 59, of Canton, died Monday morning in her home following a brief illness. She was born in Louisville, OH, on Sept. 9, 1942 to her parents, the late David and Ina Mae Bouscher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Smith, Sr. in 1995; and her brother, Raymond Bouscher. Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Roy Hesson of Canton, William Hesson of Magnolia, OH, Eugene Hesson of Uniontown, OH, George Smith, Jr. and Max Smith, both of Canton; daughters, Frances Hesson and Michele (Edwin) Martin, both of Canton; 14 grandchildren; brothers, John (Monica) Bouscher of Canton and Keith (Shannon) Bouscher of Massillon. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Gladys F. Wyss
Gladys F. Wyss, age 102, formerly of Minerva died Monday afternoon in Oakhill Manor in Alliance following a long illness. She was born Dec. 3, 1899 in Magnolia to W.L. and Hattie (Perrien) Hime. She is a retired school teacher, having taught for Malvern Local Schools. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Franklin and she attended Magnolia High School, and graduated from Minerva High School and Mt. Union College. She is survived by two sons, William R. Wyss of Alliance, Frank E. Wyss of Louisville; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters. She is preceded in death by a sister, Helen Hime; a brother, Virgil Hime. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 12 Noon in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva. Burial will be in Moultrie Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Herman Ellsworth Kerr, II
Herman Ellsworth Kerr, II, age 59, died Monday. An accountant, he was a member of Greentown United Methodist Church. Survived by wife of 41 years, Marylou (Dayton) Kerr of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and John Zaegel of Greentown, Kathy and Richard Walters of Louisville; sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Melissa of North Canton, Michael and Shari of Canton, and Bradley and Christine of Louisville; son, Christopher of Canton; daughter, Karissa Kerr of Urbana, Virginia; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Richard) Spring, Richard Walters, Jr., Travis, Joshua, and Zachary Kerr, Allison Pollard, and Andrew Kerr; sister, Susan Barker of North Canton; three nephews; and four nieces. Preceded in death by parents, Herman E., I, and Mildred (Halstead) Kerr; brother, Harley. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Karlo-Feucht Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. Kenneth M. Ancil
Kenneth M. Ancil, age 60, of Canton, passed away Saturday evening. A life resident of Canton, he was an Army Veteran, and a retired machine repairman. He is survived by his father, John W. Ancil; mother, Charlotte A. Biggs; daughters and son-in-law, Karey (Ancil) and Peter Coleman of Nashville, TN, Jennifer Ancil of Jackson Twp.; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jennifer Ancil of Canton, Michael Ancil of North Canton; grandchildren, Bradley and Noah Ancil, Matthew Coleman; brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Shelagh Ancil of Warrenton, VA. Friends will be received on Tuesday (tonight) from 6-7 p.m. in the ROSSI FUNERAL HOME. A Memorial Service will be held 7 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor John Hampton officiating. As were his wishes, Mr. Ancil will be cremated.
Marcella M. Carson
Marcella M. Carson, age 85, formerly of Minerva, died 9:45 p.m. Sunday Jan. 27, 2002 in the Green Meadows Health Wellness Center in Louisville. She was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Minerva to Arthur and Bertha (Haines) Summer. She was a graduate of Minerva High School, worked as a Cook at Minerva High School for many years, was a member of Minerva First Christian Church and a member of OAPSE. She is preceded in death by her husband, John O. Carson, who died May 5, 1987, a daughter, Janice Hahn, a sister, Maravene Mallernee, a brother, Ronald Summer. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Donna) Thomas-Tapplin of Canton, OH; a sister, Lorena Vandegrift of Minerva, OH; a brother, Noel Summer of Pompano Beach, FL; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Following cremation a memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Chapel in East Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Rusty Summer officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Neil C. Chapman
Neil C. Chapman, age 75, of North Canton, died Monday in Mercy Medical Center. He retired from the City of North Canton in 1985. Survived by daughter, Joy McIntyre of the home; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Kelly, Van, Gordon and Keith Chapman, all of Arkansas. Preceded in death by wife, Gladys in 1999 and son, Timothy in 1989. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Karlo Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Reid Firestone officiating. Paul J. Friscat, age 81, of North Canton. Survived by his loving wife, Dorothy J. Friscat; his sons, John Friscat of Bolivar and Jeff Friscat of Pittsburgh, PA; grandson, John Friscat, Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Little Flower Catholic Church, Rev. Peter Simon Bailer, Sr. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Philip Willis
Philip Willis, age 89, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away in his sleep Saturday morning in the comfort of his daughter's home in Canton. Born on Oct. 13, 1912, in Blount Spring, AL. He attended high school in Pennsylvania, where he was a star player in football, basketball, and baseball. After graduating in 1931, he was recruited and attended Louisville Municipal College in Kentucky. He then came to Ohio, where he met and married Kathryn R. Stokes, his devoted wife of 57 years. He was a 35 year employee of the Hoover Co., where he retired in 1977. Philip Willis was an avid and determined political voice in the City of Canton. He regularly attended city council meetings where he fought on behalf of the average citizen. Philip's fight for fairness extended over many decades and included communications with newspaper editors and reporters, politicians, and other legislative bodies- including the US Supreme Court. It would not be unusual for them to receive regular correspondence written from his golden manual typewriter. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathryn Willis; parents, Bruce Philip Willis and Ella (Willis) Justice; stepfather, William Justice; and two sisters, Audrey Hill and Louise Butler. Survived by his daughter, Shirley (Charles) Green; grandchildren, Philip Tucker, Steven (Darlene) Tucker, and Donna (Stanley V.) Williams; nieces, Patty Good, Rita Jordan, Kathy Mayle, and Candace Butler; nephews, William Glenn and Theodore Butler; 14 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and a host of great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday January 30, 2002 in the Schneeberger Funeral Home, 2222 Fulton Rd. N.W. Canton, with Rev. Rickey L. Lawson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling Hours will be Tuesday (tonight) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Robert W. Sheil
Robert W. Sheil, age 79, died January 19, 2002, in Voorhees, NJ., after a lingering illness. Born in Canton, to William and Ruth Sheil. Bob was a graduate of McKinley High School and Mt. Union College, where he was affiliated with SAE Fraternity. He saw active duty both in World War II and the Korean War, remaining in the Air Force as a Reserve for 20 years. After a career in Traffic Management, Bob retired to Florida in the mid '80's, moving to Voorhees just recently. Preceded in death by his wife, Muriel. He is survived by his son, Jon (Rose); his daughter, Mara (Clint) of Florida; four grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Elsaesser of Canton. Burial will be in Florida at a later date. The Wooster Funeral Home in Voorhees, NJ is handling arrangements.

Valerie Lee Dull
Valerie Lee Dull, 49, of Middlebranch, OH, passed away quietly in the loving arms of her husband, David Dull, in their home, on January 26, 2002. Valerie fought a valiant fight with cancer which finally claimed her. We mourn our loss, but rejoice in the fact that she is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Valerie was preceded in death by her father, Donald Nagel, a brother, Donnie Nagel and a mother-in-law, Arlene Albert. Valerie is survived by her husband, David Dull, Sr.; her daughters, Jodi Oliver of Canton, OH, Jennifer Mason of Malvern, OH; a stepson, David Dull, Jr. of Lebanon, OH; stepdaughter, Laura Dull of North Canton, OH; seven grandchildren; her mother, Betty Nagel; and stepfather, Phillip Peterson of North Port, FL; a sister, Sheila Mestel of Louisville, OH; a father-in-law, Paul Albert of Niles, MI: and several nieces and nephews. Valerie donated her body to the Cleveland Clinic for advancement of medical sciences. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. January 31st in the chapel at the First Christian Church at 2600 Cleveland Ave., Canton, OH.
Victoria Moldovan
Victoria Moldovan, age 79, of Canton, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Aultman Hospital. A lifetime resident of Canton, she was a member of St. George Romanian Catholic Cathedral, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens of the church. Preceded in death by her husband, John Moldovan, Jr.; parents, Anna and Andrew Popa; stepfather, William Nemes; a brother, Cornell Popa; a sister, Aurelia Majestic. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and John Stoker of Canton, Vicki Lynn and John Dan of Michigan; a son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Sandy Moldovan of Canton; five grandchildren, Lori, Stephanie and Elisa Stoker, Ashley and Brett Dan; a brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Jennie Popa of Canton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Bill Snyder of Canton, Dorothy and Steve Kounouzvelis of Canton; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. George Romanian Catholic Cathedral. Fr. Emanuel Samayoa and Fr. John Skala will officiate. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. Rose M. (Ziemba) Schumacher, age 78, of Canton, passed away Saturday afternoon, January 26, 2002 in Mercy Medical Center. Born October 19, 1923 in Ludlow, MA, to the late, Michael and Victoria (Majka) Ziemba. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was a former employee of Haines Directory. Preceded in death by her husband, Herman F. in 1992; and her brothers, Frank, John and Mitchell Ziemba. Survived by sons and daughters-in-law, William M. and Mary Sharon Schumacher of South Euclid, OH, Robert M. and Thelma Schumacher of Louisville, David B. and Mickey Schumacher of Canton; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Adam Wesolow of Lake Elmore, VT; sisters, Julia Rolla of Ware, MA, Nellie Opalinski of Wilbraham, MA, Evelyn Pereira of Ludlow, MA; a brother, Ted Ziemba of Ware, MA; grandchildren, Kristen (Matt) Webb, Julie (David) Bilson, Brett, Justin, Joshua and Jordan Schumacher; great-grandchildren, Matthew Webb and Hannah Bilson. Rose was the unofficial tour guide of the Amish Community for the past 12 years. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Beneleit as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Don Williams Funeral Home.
