Beulah I. Vogel
Beulah I. Vogel, age 91 of Canton died Wednesday afternoon in Altercare of Canton following an extended illness. A life resident of Canton, Beulah was a 1928 graduate of McKinley High School. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and O.E.S. Chapter 190. Preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Vogel in 1980; two brothers, Darrel and Don Werner. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Sandra) Burrier of North Canton and Mrs. J. Mark (Susan) Stewart of Columbus; five grandchildren, Bonnie Riell of Delaware, OH, Wendy Burrier of Canton, Todd Burrier of Canal Fulton, David Stewart of Powell, OH and Darren Stewart of Westerville, OH; five great grandchildren. Funeral service will be Saturday 1:30 p.m. in the Spiker-Foster-SHRIVER Funeral Home, 4817 Cleveland Ave NW with Rev. Eli Klingensmith officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in the North Lawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dorothy M. Knappenberger
Dorothy M. Knappenberger, age 82, of N. Canton, died Wednesday in the Manor Care Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was a life resident of the Canton area and was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in N. Canton. Survived by her husband, Harold F. Knappenberger of the home; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Judith A. and Lawrence Chapman of Malvern, Sandra L. and David Jordon of East Canton, Carol L. and Dennis Hickman of Canton, Karen and Wayne Sexton of East Canton, Susan Russo of North Canton and Lisa Knappenberger of Canton; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Terry P. and Patti Winters of Canton, Gerald and Donna Knappenberger of Canton, Thomas Knappenberger of East Canton, James and Teresa Knappenberger of N. Canton and Michael Knappenberger of Canton; a brother, George Wallace of Atlanta, GA; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sons, Charles and Robert Winters and by three sisters and three brothers. Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Lamiell Funeral Home with Msgr. Jay Clarke officiating. Dorothy Naylor-Machan
Dorothy Naylor-Machan, age 80, of Canton, Ohio, went to be with the Lord, passing away Wednesday evening in the Country Lawn Nursing Home in Navarre following an extended illness. Born in Canton on April 19, 1921, she was a 1939 graduate of McKinley High School and former employee of the Timken Co. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Sarah Ilona Jameson; also a sister, Mildred Neibert; her first husband, Fred B. Naylor, who passed away in 1977; and her second husband, John S. Machan, in 1996. She was a former member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Canton. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Howard Anderson of Canton; her brother, Howard Jameson, Jr. of Canton; there are two grandchildren, Jennifer and Kevin Anderson both of Canton; her stepson and his wife, John Edward and Linda Machan of Lexington, KY; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Norma and Ron Bethel of Louisville, OH; and Debbie and C. Michael Rowland of Burlison, TN; there are seven step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Minister, Jeff Bullock officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Dorothy Schlote
Dorothy Schlote, age 95, of Canton, passed away Thursday afternoon January 24, 2002 in Bethany Nursing Home. She was born in Oil City, PA on September 4, 1906 to the late Barney and Rose (Brodsky) Slesnick, and moved to Canton when she was 11 years old. Dorothy was a graduate of Kent Normal School and Western Reserve. She was a teacher for over 22 years in the Canton City Schools. She was a member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue and taught Sunday School. Dorothy was active in Senior Citizens Affairs at the Canton Jewish Center. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Schlote in 1975 and son, Atty. Lawrence Richard Schlote; sisters, Florence Michelson, Sarah Zwerman, and Rhea Slesnick; brothers, Sidney, Archie, and Cyril Slesnick. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie (and Glenn Oldroyd) Myers, and Sue and Steve Papell of Strongsville; three grandchildren, Leslie and Ron Crete of NH, Jeanne and Chris Sweazy of FL, and Dan and Kim Papell of Shaker Heights; and three Great-grandchildren, Devon Crete, Madison Papell, and Gabriel Papell. Funeral Services will be Sunday 1:00 PM in the Arnold Funeral Home with Rabbi John Spitzer and Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Final Resting Place is Canton Hebrew Cemetery. George H. Harrison
George H. Harrison, age 90 of 5th St., Dillonvale, OH died Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH. George was born August 31, 1911 in Welston, OH, son of the late Robert and Georgia Harrison. He was a member of the American Bowling Congress and protestant by faith. George led a healthy, active life following his retirement at age 64 as a machinist from Case Machine in Cleveland. His favorite activities included golfing, bowling, traveling and visiting his family which he was fortunate enough to enjoy until December. In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by his wife Sophia Winski Harrison who died in 1983, one son, Ronald Harrison and one half brother, Charlie Harrison. George is survived by one son, Robert Harrison and his wife, Shirley of Navarre, OH; one daughter, Sharyn Swedlund and her husband, Richard of Bay Village, OH; five grandchildren, Debra Biggs, Roland Harrison, Marsha Elkins, Ryan Harrison and Bryn Swedlund; three great-grandchildren, Chelsea Elkins, Cory Elkins and Zachary Harrison. Friends are invited to attend visitation Friday 5-9 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 154 Second St., Dillonvale, Ohio, where services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Paul Gerycz. Jake J. Miller
Jake J. Miller, age 86, of Uniontown, went home to be withthe Lord Wednesday night, January 23, 2002 while wintering in Sarasota, Florida. He was born on July 2, 1915 in Mesopotamia, Ohio to the late Joseph and Mary (Miller) Miller. He retired from the Teamsters Union as a truck driver. He was a member of Hartville Mennonite Church. Jake's hobbies were Steam and Antique Engines, and Saw Mills. He was preceded in death by brothers, Bill, Atlee, and Dan; and sisters, Anna Byler, Mary Miller, and Lizzie Miller. He is survived by his wife, Susan, with whom he would have celebrated 63 years of marriage on March 18, 2002; daughter, Ella Toy of Sarasota, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, William R. and Patricia Miller of North Canton, James E. and Marty Miller of Uniontown, and Samuel E. and Veronica Miller of Hartville; sister and brother-in-law, Fannie and Elmer Gingerich of Uniontown and FL; grandchildren, William R. II and Crystal Miller, Jennifer Miller, Jacob Jake Miller, Jimmy Miller, Melanie Miller, and Jonathan Miller. James Leo Gulling
James Leo Gulling, age 74,, of Naples, FL, formerly of Louisville, OH, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002. Mr. Gulling had lived in Louisville, OH, before moving to Naples 21 years ago. He was a graduate of Kent State University, class of 1951. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Louisville Rotary. He was previously employed as a project manager for over 20 years with Gibbons-Grable Construction Co. and in Naples he worked with PBS Construction Company. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; his daughters, Cecilia A. Gulling of North Canton, Barbara (Melvin) Huber of Cincinnati, Colleen (Gerry) Forde of Naples, FL, Beth (Peter) Shoup of Naples, FL, Kathy (Bill) Evans of Marietta, GA, Susan (Jim) Franke of Pascagoula, MS. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and two sisters, Marge (Don) Monnot of Alliance, Frances (Jim) Kendall of Canton. Mary Ellen Holderbaum, age 66, of East Sparta, OH, died January 23, 2002, in her home from a brief illness from cancer. Born June 18, 1935, at Sistersville, WV to the late Harrison Leroy and Zona Marie (Strosnider) Snider. She was a homemaker and of Protestant faith. Mary Ellen was a care giver to the Holderbaum family and to all her friends. Survived by her husband, John C. Holderbaum, who she married July 4, 1952 at Sistersville, WV; sons, Charles of the home, Dennis and wife, Cheryl Holderbaum of East Sparta, OH; grandchildren, Shawn, Vanessa and Kyle Holderbaum of East Sparta, OH; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Glenn and wife, Edna Holderbaum of Massillon, OH, William and wife, Kathy Holderbaum of Canton, OH, Mildred Lunsford of Canton, OH, Vivian Havenga of Dayton, OH; many loving nieces and nephews. Michael L. Lopez
Michael Louis Lopez, age 75, of North Canton, died Wednesday morning in Mercy Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Cleveland, Mr. Lopez founded Canton Sports Wear in 1969 with his partner, Joseph Axelrod. The company was later sold to Dalton that he continued to manage. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Knights of Columbus of N. Olmstead, OH and the North Canton Elks. Preceded in death by a son, Michael J. Lopez in 1999. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Doreen Jae Lopez; daughter, Debra J. Lopez of Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph M. and Theresa Lopez of Canal Fulton; son, Marc J. Lopez of Youngstown; four grandchildren; sister, Grace Soukup; three brothers, Joseph, Vince and Larry Lopez, all of Cleveland. A private service will be Saturday in the Spiker-Foster-SHRIVER Funeral Home with Pastor Robert P. Sander officiating. Entombment will be in the North Lawn Mausoleum. Mildred E. Devis
Mildred E. Devis, age 87 of Canton, passed away Thursday morning in the Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Danora, PA on March 18, 1914. She was a former beautician; living the greater portion of her life in the Canton area. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Canton, the Booster Sunday School Class, Order of Eastern Star Chapter #190, and for many years had been active with several of the square dance groups in Canton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Earl L. Devis, who passed away September 22, 1995; a sister, Mary Prysock; and a brother, John L. Hehr. Survivors include three sisters, Jean Young of Canton, Doris Upperman of Louisville and Donna Grell of Oviedo, FL; her brother, Bill Hehr of Canton; she is also survived by very special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church of Canton with Pastor Kenneth D. Scheck II officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Naomi R. Ebling
Naomi R. Lindy Ebling, age 66, of Perry Twp., passed away peacefully Tuesday evening in her home. Born in Canton, she is the daughter of the late Stanley and Anna Laurie Ebling. She is retired from Superior Dairy where she was employed for 40 years. She was a Red Cross Volunteer and memberships include First Christian Church, A.A.R.P., Perry Grange. Also preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and one nephew. Survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirleyann and Eddie Rehfus of Canton, Sue and Robert Brackin of Carrollton, Patricia and Paul Plot of Minerva; one brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Thelma Ebling of Carrollton; two nieces, Kaye and Tammy; one nephew, Brad; dear friend, Mary Darlene Hahn; and her three special little friends, Precious, Cocoa, and Sassy. Services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Schneeberger Funeral Home. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. prior to services. Private burial services will be held in Sunset Hills Burial Park at a later date. The family suggests memorials be made to The Stark County Humane Society and The American Diabetes Association.
Norma A. Niuman
Norma A. Niuman, age 83, formerly of Union Ave, Minerva died 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2002 in Minerva Eldercare following an extended illness. She was born April 6, 1918 in Paris, OH to Elmer and Sarah (Niederhiser) Gordon. She and her husband owned Niuman Meats from 1965-1991, a member of Minerva First Christian Church, she was a Sunday School Teacher for many years and a member of the UI Sunday School Class. She was also a 4-H Advisor. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Niuman, who died July 12, 1992; an infant sister, Edna; three brothers, Carl, Ralph and Ray Gordon; two great grandsons. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Joyce) Hunter of New Philadephia and Mrs. Tim (Joan) Wright of Minerva; a sister, Gertrude Barnhill of Tempe, AZ; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva with Mr. Arthur Guy officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be one hour prior to services in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the UI Sunday School Class at the church.
Thelma L. Baroni
Thelma L. Baroni, age 86 of North Canton, passed away Thursday morning after an extended illness. Born in Ravenswood, West Virginia, she had been a Canton resident most of her life. Preceded in death by her parents, Clinton and Harriet Charmicheal, husband Ernest Baroni, son Russell Pierce, and one brother. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marcelene and Don Wilson of Canton, Nancy Scorza of Sacramento, CA, Janice and Bob Bower of Carrollton, Alice Lombardi of North Canton; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. As were her wishes, Mrs. Baroni will be cremated. There will be no calling hours or services. The Rossi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Hansen
Thomas Hansen, age 74, of Canton, passed away in Aultman Hospital after a brief illness. He was a life resident of Canton. Member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. He was a graduate of Timken High School in 1945 and a member of the Timken Alumni. He was a retired employee of the Wheeling Lake Erie Railroad and was employed there for 20 years as a Switch Operator. He was a veteran serving in the Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Christine (Adams) Hansen, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage; daughter and son-in-law, Tyra and William Reeves of Bolivar; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Angie Hansen of New Port Ritchey, Christ and Rosemary Hansen, Dean and Janet Hansen, all of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Nick and June Hansen of Las Vegas, NV, Harry and Carol Hansen of Canton; one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and John DiBartolomeo of Holiday, FL; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christ and Evangeline (Peterson) Hansen; one brother, William Hansen. Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, with a brief Prayer service at 10:30 a.m. in the Rossi Funeral Home prior to going to the St. Haralambos Church for services at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Anthony Spirtos officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Donald E. Hupp
Donald E. Hupp, age 63, of Canton, OH, passed away Thursday morning, January 24, 2002 in Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Canton, OH, August 29, 1938 to his parents the late Kenneth and Jennie Hupp, he was a retired employee of Stark County Board of Mental Retardation, retiring May 1997 after 17 years of service. He was a life time member of VFW Post #3747 and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served in the United States Airforce. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Hupp. Survivors include his wife, Jean Hupp of the home to whom he would have been married 25 years, February 12, 2002; two sons, Brian Conklin of Canton, Steve Conklin of North Carolina; two daughters, Brenda Clarke of Indiana, Denise McCollett of Maine; three step-children, William Bracken, Jeffrey Bracken and Christopher Bracken all of Canton, OH; three sisters, Ethel Burge of Massillon, Linda (Joseph) Cirelli, Sandra (Richard) Miller; one brother, Paul Hupp all of Canton; two grandchildren whom he is raising, Jessica and Christopher; 11 other grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Pastor James Simone officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
