Alice L. Ross
Alice L. Ross, age 80, passed away peacefully at Windemere Nursing Home in Augusta Georgia on Nov. 17. She was a resident of North Canton most of her life and a lifelong member of Zion United Church of Christ. She was born to Gertrude and Edward Stahler. Preceded in death by husband George L. Ross. Survived by brother Logan Stahler, brother and sister-in-law Phil and Florence Stahler, son Jon Ross, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Jim Wilkin, daughter and son-in-law Margaret Ross and Charles Wallace, grandson Tim Wilkin, granddaughter Aimee Wilkin, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held (and announced later) in late winter or early spring.
Betty J. Cole
Betty J. Cole, age 78, of Alliance, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 22, 2001. The daughter of the late Elmer and Leonora (Stettenbenz) Hermann, she was born April 27, 1923 and moved to the Alliance area in 1960. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Alliance, where she enjoyed numerous church activities. A member of the Order of St. Luke's, she also had a great love for travel which took she and her friends to various locations throughout the world. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rojean Cole of Alliance; son, William Cole of Witchita, KS; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and David Rickard of Salem, OH; a sister, Arlene Engberg of West Palm Beach, FL; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Cole in 1968. Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church, 1659 West State Street, Alliance with Rev. Gordon L. Thomas officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Arcadia Cemetery, Buffalo, NY. Beverly J. McGuire
Beverly J. McGuire, age 60, of North Canton, passed away Friday evening in the residence after an extended illness. She was born in Canton, a daughter of the late, Robert S. Shelker and Leona Neading Shelker of Canton, and resided in East Sparta until 1960 when she moved to North Canton. She was a 1959 graduate of Sandy Valley High School. Beverly retired in June of 2001 from The Timken Co., after 26 years service, where she worked in the Insurance Benefits Office. She was a member of East Sparta United Methodist Church and Bolivar Chapter #368, Order of Eastern Star, which she served as Worthy Matron in 1983. Surviving besides her mother is her husband, Charles K. McGuire, with whom she celebrated their 41st Wedding Anniversary on Jan. 17th; her twin sister, Bonnie Mahaffey, of Dover; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and LaVonne Shelker, of Scottsdale, AZ; and several nieces and nephews, including Carla Shelker, who helped care for her aunt. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home with Chaplain Rick Brinsley of Pastoral Care at Mercy Medical Center, officiating. David A. Green, Jr., age 61, David departed this life on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at Aultman Hospital. David A. Green, Jr. was born on October 6, 1940 in Cedar, AL, to Amelia Rowser Jones and the late David Green, Sr. Preceded in death by his wife, Edna R. Green who passed away in 1997; sister, Mary Alice Anderson. David leaves to cherish his precious memories three sons, David (Valentina) Green, III, Cedric A. Dennis L. Bender
Dennis L. Denny Bender, age 75, of Canton, went home to be with the Lord on Thanksgiving Day. A native of Canton, Denny was a graduate of McKinley High School, Class of '44 and Ohio University with a degree in Business. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served his country during W.W. II. For 39 years he was employed by Curtis 1000 Inc. as a salesman, retiring in 1985. A longtime member of Dueber United Methodist Church. Memberships also include Wm. McKinley Lodge # 431 F. A.M., A.A.S.R. Valley of Canton, Nazir Grotto. He was a past advisor for Canton Chapter, Order of DeMolay. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Bender in 1985; parents, Harvey Elson and Katherine (Deal) Bender; stepfather, Lee Morris; brothers, Wilbert and Eugene Bender. Survived by two sons and their wives, James E. and Rebecca L. Bender of California, Brice D. and Diane L. Bender of Canton; grandchildren, Jaclyn and Ryan Bender; and his close friend, Hilda Blount. Dorothy G. Lough
Dorothy G. Lough, age 81, of East Sparta, died Thursday Nov. 22, 2001, in the Arbors of Canton, following an extended illness. Daughter of the late Calvin and Bessie (Clingerman) Perdew, she was an East Sparta area resident for the past 23 years, retiring from Timken Mercy Medical Center in 1980 after 21 years of service. She attended the Howenstine Christian Church and was a 1959 graduate of Mercy School of Nursing. Also preceded in death by her husband, William H. Lough in 1966, and one son, Donald Edward Lough in 1983. Survived by one son, William W. Lough of East Sparta; six grandchildren, Jeff Lough, Shawn Lough and Shelly Rinehart, all of Canton, Kimberly Jacobson of St. Charles, MO, William J. Lough of East Sparta, Donald Lee Lough of Massillon; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Calvin and Sherry Perdew of Canton, Wayne and Shirley Perdew of Gulf Shores, AL; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Margaret Cook, Teresa Hammonds, Geraldine and Ernest Wilson, all of Cumberland, MD; sister-in-law, Gladys Cespedes of Canton and a special friend, Mary Wolf of Canton. Gary W. Miner
Gary W. Miner, age 53, of East Canton, died Thursday after a sudden illness. Born in Wise County, VA. He had been a Canton area resident most of his life. He was employed as a truck driver for Shenandoah Trucking Co. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Survived by his wife, Cindy L. Miner of the home; a son; a step-son; a step-daughter; five grandchildren; five sisters; and four brothers. An American Indian Ritual will be Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001 at 11 a.m. at The Bolivar Dam. There will be no calling hours. The Lamiell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Helene Corman
Helene Corman, age 89, formerly of Canton, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2001, one month from her 90th birthday, in Lakeview Homes in Mission Viejo, CA. She was born in Canton, December 25, 1911, went to business school and was in sales at Bon Marche'. Helene had a real estate license and worked for a realtor and was also a district manager for a market research company. When she was younger, she was active in the Canton Jewish Center and the Players Guild. She was a member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue and on Friday nights she had led services in the Jewish Home, Lakeview Homes, where she had resided for the past two years. Helen enjoyed playing cards, tennis and traveling. Preceded in death by her husband, Ben in January 1999 and an infant brother. She is survived by her daughter and fiance', Nikki Corman and Joseph F. Russo of Huntington Beach, CA, Joanne Lattavo, who was like a second daughter, of Canton; brother-in-law, Saul (Naomi) Corman of Canton; nieces, Barbara (Art) Rosenstock of Canton, Susan (Peter) Cahn of Indiana, and Jill (Don) Bryan of Florida; and other family members in California. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 26 at 11 a.m. in Shaaray Torah Synagogue with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Interment in Canton Hebrew Cemetery. Jerry H. Schneider
Jerry Harold Schneider, 63, died Monday, November 12, 2001, at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Fairbanks, Alaska. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Harold Adolph Schneider and Mary Katherine Schneider. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara Schneider; sister, Barbara Gallo of Canton, OH; five children, Debrah Osgood of Chugiak, AK, Jeri Steiner of Eagle River, AK, Stephen Schneider of Fort St. John, BC, Joanna Wiggins of Delta Junctions, and David Schneider of Delta Junction; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Jerry was born April 22, 1938 in Canton, OH. He graduated from Lehman High School. He worked for Goodyear Aero-Space and Babcock Wilcox Research Center. He moved to Palmer, AK in 1976, and then to Delta Junction, AK in 1984 where he made his home.

remember Jerry's quiet strength and dedication to his family and to his Lord. The inspiration of his selfless love, tireless labor and wise counsel will remain a living legacy and to bless all who were honored to know a man who lived his principles for God, and whose example

Leonard P. Grant
Leonard P. Grant, age 81, of Canton, died Saturday, November 24, 2001 in Green Meadows Nursing Home of a brief illness. Born in Middlebranch he had been a life resident of the Canton area. Leonard retired from Diamond-Portland Cement Co. with 43 years of service. He was an avid sports fan. In addition to his parents, Michael and Josephine Grant, Leonard was preceded in death by sisters, Angeline Grant, Mary Severance and Violet Dottore and brother, Anthony Grant. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Helen E. Grant of the residence; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tony Rogers of Magnolia, OH, and Judy and Dick Manley of North Canton; two step-sons and daughters-in-plaw, Ron and Jean Kintz of Freeport, OH, and Dave and Jean Kintz of North Canton; 18 step-grandchildren; and 33 great-step grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; three sisters, Helen Lawson and Eleanor Grant of Middlebranch and Genevieve Rizzo of Parma, OH. Lulu M. Gooding
Lulu M. Gooding, age 100, who resided at Hospitality House for the past three years, departed her earthly body on November 24, 2001. Mrs. Gooding was born on March 21, 1901 in Queensville, IN to Christian and Lily Dennerlein. Mrs. Gooding was directly descended from the Mayflower, tracing her heritage to Peregrine White. She was born two months after the death of her 3 year old sister, Mabel, who died of diphtheria. Mrs. Gooding still keeps a lock of her sister's hair. Others who preceded Mrs. Gooding in leaving this earth were her husband, Harley L. Gooding; her son, Harley L. Gooding, Jr.; her daughter, Mary Lou Bowman; her brother, Clyde; and her many beloved cousins. Mrs. Gooding is survived by her grandson, Eric Blumensen of Beaverdam, VA; her granddaughter and her husband, Connie and Tim Lewis of Canton; her great-grandsons, Christopher and Stephen Lewis; her son-in-law, Robert S. Bowman and his family. They include Mike and Mikey Bowman of Canton, Carl and Celinda Bowman of Clinton, Ron and Hilda Bowman of Cuyahoga Falls, and Tom and Cindy Joseph of Akron and their children and a niece, Bette Mae Fisher of Indianapolis, IN. She is also survived by cousins in Indiana. Mrs. Gooding came to the Canton area in the late 1930's, first residing in Louisville and then moving to Canton. She retired from Aultman Hospital in 1963. She was a gentle person who loved animals and hated to see them neglected. In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made to the Stark County Humane Society or the Animal Protection Guild. The family would like to thank Hospitality House for their kindness and care of Mrs. Gooding during the time she was there. Marvin Ray Ott, Sr., age 84, of Canton, passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2001 in Mercy Medical Center. Born in Coburn, WV, he was the son of the late Harrison and Anna Ott. He worked for the CCC and was retired from the Hoover Company. He was a member of the NRA. Preceded in death by his wife, Zelma, in November 1991. He is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur Bud and Caroline of Los Angeles, CA, Raymond G. and Barbara of Columbus, Everett F. and Sue of Marcola, OR, Robert K. and Sandra of Canton, Marvin R., Jr. and Beverly of Kensington; sister, Rosemary; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren. Orlando J. Stevens, age 81, passed away Friday November 9, 2001 after a long illness. Mr. Stevens retired from the US Army as an E-8 after 24 years of service. Robert L. Battershell Sr.
Robert L. Battershell Sr., age 84, of Marlboro Township, passed away Friday Night, November 23, 2001, one month away from his 85th birthday, in Altercare of Hartville. He was born in Alliance, OH on December 21, 1916 to the late John Grace (Beacom) Battershell. Robert had attended Alliance High School and at a younger age established a milk route. A lifetime Dairy Farmer, he also drove a school bus for Marlington School District for 33 years. He was a member of Marlboro Grange and the Stark County Farm Bureau, and served on the Board of Directors of the Marlboro Township Volunteer Fire Company. Preceded in death by his wife Hazel L. (Ginther) Battershell in 1995; sister, Eileen Egli; and brother, Donald Battershell. Rocky D. White
Rocky D. White, loving husband and best friend, age 73, of North Canton, OH, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly Friday evening, November 23, 2001 in Aultman Hospital. Born in Canton, OH, May 8, 1928, he was a retired employee of the Hoover Co., retiring December 31, 1988 after 44 years of service and was a Veteran of the National Guard having served in the Korean Conflict. He attended Canton Christian Fellowship and was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his loving wife who will love him always, Ann of the home to whom he was married 44 years; two brothers, Herman White of North Canton, OH, Tony White of Canton; two sisters, Mary Forney of Bradenton, FL, Vera Ehlert of Maryland; numerous nieces, nephews, and host of friends. Susan M. Hoffman
Susan Marie Hoffman, age 47, of Canton, died Saturday morning in her home following an extended illness. Susan was on leave from American Greetings in Cleveland where she was the Executive Art Director. She attended Miami University and graduated from Kent State University. Susan was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron and the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was very active in many charitable organizations. Survived by her husband, Judge John R. Hoffman, Jr. of the home; step-daughter, Kristen Richeson of Cary, NC; parents, John and Marge (Starks) Palazzo of Akron; sisters and brother-in-law, Chris and Jeff Noyes of Cincinnati and Patty Palazzo of Los Angeles; brother and sister-in-law, John and Cindi Palazzo of Akron; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. William A. Rohr
William A. Rohr, age 88, of Dover, OH, passed away Friday evening in Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Massillon, he was the son of the late Adam C. and Mary E. Rohr. He was a graduate of Massillon Washington High School, retired as a dairy farmer in 1959 and then retired as a Milk Tester for the State of Ohio in 1973. Bill was a Life Master for the American Contract Bridge League, a member of the Canton Jewish Center Bridge Club, the Massillon Toastmasters, the Independent Order of Forresters, the C.Y.C., the Massillon Y.M.C.A., and once served as a Justice of the Peace for Jackson Twp. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Rohr who died in 1993; and brother, Ralph Rohr. He is survived by his son, Theodore A. Rohr of Wildoman, CA; daughters, Elaine A. Smith; and her husband, Tom of North Canton, Joann Kindelberger and Charles Yost of Dover, OH, Rhonda L. Baker; and her husband, Charlie of Green, OH; sisters, Carolyn Haer of Southlake, TX, Florence Meeting and her husband, Maurice of Jackson Twp; 15 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. William Hansen
William Hansen, Lt. Colonel, USAF (Ret.), born June 12, 1932 in Canton, Ohio, died November 9, 2001 in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and was laid to rest November 13 at the Florida National Cemetery with services performed by an Air Force Honor Guard which fired a 21-gun salute honoring his outstanding 21-year career as a pilot for the United States Air Force. He graduated from Lehman High School in 1950 where he was an outstanding football and baseball athlete. A graduate of Ohio University in 1954, he entered the Air Force and earned his wings that same year. During his flying career he was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and nine air medals. While in the Air Force, he was stationed, with his family, in Japan, France, Okinawa, and many U. S. Bases. After retirement he had a second career as a real estate broker for Dee Hansen Properties in the San Diego, California, area. Hansen had a small third career performing as a stand-up comedian in Florida and California clubs and also performed during his Air Force career. Preceding him in death were his parents, Christ and Evangeline Hansen. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dee Hansen; a son, Earl William Hansen; daughters, Holly (Russell) Hanlin, Vicky (Daniel) Leeyer, Heidi Hansen, Valerie (Michael) Kennard, and Julie (Quinn) Beyer plus eleven grandchildren; a sister, Diana (John) De Bartolomeo; and three brothers, Nick (June) Hansen, Tom (Christine) Hansen and Harry (Carol) Hansen. A memorial service will be held in La Mesa, California at the Journey Community Church, Center Drive, at 2:00 p.m. on December 2. He soared through the skies as a pilot; his loving spirit soared through the hearts of family and many friends. Happy Landings. Rest in Peace.
