Carl R. Farber
Carl R. Farber, age 73, of East Sparta, passed away early Wednesday morning after a short illness. Born in Magnolia, a son of the late Robert Jay and Florence Hartline Farber, he had been a life resident of the area. Carl was retired from Diebold, Inc. in 1976 after 26 years of service as a door builder. He was a member of East Sparta United Methodist Church and the Sandy Valley A.A.R.P. Survived by his wife, Dorothy H. Farber wth whom he celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 3, 2000; one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Ned Sickafoose of Magnolia; one son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Veronica Roni Farber of Massillon; one sister, Doris Clark of Canton; one granddaughter, Kristen Manos. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home with Rev. Nancy Manner officiating. Friends may call Friday 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home. Caroline M. Brotton
Caroline M. Brotton, age 80, of Canton, died Sunday morning following an extended illness. Born Oct. 29, 1920 in Akron to the late Glen and Laura Smith. Preceded in death by her husband, John C. Brotton. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Lynn Brotton of Chattanooga, TN; one daughter, Beverly K. Rutherford of Akron; one sister, Betty Fesler of Akron; one aunt, Dolly Fair of Stow; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two nephews; several cousins. At her request there will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held Saturday June 23, 2001 at 1 p.m. in Mayfield Manor Senior Center, 3846 11th St. SW, Canton, OH. Charles Ray Porter
Charles Ray Porter, age 76, of North Canton, died Tuesday night in Mercy Medical Center. Born in Canton to the late Harry and Pearl (Powell) Porter. He was a 1942 McKinley High School Graduate. He was a World War II Army Veteran, having served with the First Ranger Battalion, and was a POW in Germany for 18 months. He was the retired owner and operator of the Porter Plumbing and Heating Co. Ray was a member of the Eagles, Elks and Moose Lodges, the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. He was also a former Auxiliary Policeman and Plain Township Volunteer Fireman. Survived by his wife of 24 1/2 years, Gail B. Porter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Keith Kell of North Canton, Paula and Joe Burns of Louisville; three granddaughters, Mandie and Mindy Burns, Jenny Zaytzeff; two stepsons, Theodore R. Schneider of Kansas City, MO., John R. Schneider and his wife Sue of Florence, S.C.; five step grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Jane Lapp of Canton, Elaine and Jack Toy of Massillon; and a sister-in-law, Sadie Porter of Massillon. Preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Franklin Porter; and a brother-in-law, Carl Lapp. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Lamiell Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas A. Patton officiating. Dorothy E. Flagg
Dorothy E. Flagg, age 87, of Canton, passed away late Tuesday evening in the Meadow Wind Nursing Home in Massillon. Born March 2, 1914 in Massillon and had lived in this area all of her life. For 50 years she was the self employed owner operator of day care centers, The Playschool and Alphabet Nursery, retiring in 1976. Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Williams and Etta Cramer Williams Sands; her husband, Charles W. Flagg, in 1967; brother, Jack S. Williams; grandson, Graham C. Flagg. Survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Joan and Richard Sonnhalter of Lake Mohawk, Mary D. Fowler of North Canton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles W. and Jill Flagg of Hudson, Thomas D. and Janey Flagg of Jersey City, NJ; a brother, Richard K. Williams of Massillon; three sisters-in-law, Mary Flagg of Massillon, Angie Flagg of Canton, Dollie Hobson of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; also numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. in Greenwood Christian Church, 4425 Frazer Ave. NW, Canton, with Rev. Tony Amerine officiating. The family requests material contributions to the Timken Mercy Hospice.
Dorothy S. Ireland
Dorothy S. Ireland, age 85, of Sebring, passed away Sunday morning in Crandall Medical Center after a short illness. Born in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Samuel and Florence Devison Steenson, she had been a North Canton resident since 1972, mostly recently moving to Copeland Oaks Retirement Center. After studying education at Muskingum College, where she graduated in 1938, Dorothy received a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She was went on to teach elementary school, and at the University of Pittsburgh and at Kent State University. Most recently she taught first grade at Barr Elementary School where she retired in 1976. In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by a brother, Bill Steenson. She is survived by her husband, Rev. Charles V. Ireland, to whom she was married on May 18, 1952; one daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Dennis Weals, of Jackson Twp.; one step-daughter and her husband, Adrienne and John O'Leary, of Berea, OH; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Dot Steenson, of Mayfield Heights OH and Bob and Esther Steenson, of Lakeland, FL; three grandsons, Brian Anderson, Andy Hughes, and Michael Weals; and four nieces and six nephews. A Memorial service will be held at a future date.
Ethel M. Haupt
Ethel Mae Haupt, of Sebring, passed away Tuesday morning, June 19, at 8:30 a.m. at McCrea Manor Nursing Home in Alliance following a lengthy illness. She was born December 6, 1919 in Sebring to the late Jesse and Mary Ellen (Loutzenhiser) Betts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winfield Scott Haupt, whom she married June 30, 1950. She was a member of the Pine Lake Christian Church and Loyal Bereans Sunday School class. She was a graduate of Sebring McKinley High School and attended the Cleveland School of Nursing. She worked as a bookkeeper at the former French Saxon Company. She was very active in the community serving twice as secretary of the Sebring Charter Commission. She also served as the Western Mahoning County Republican Chairperson for many years. She was a long-time member of the Sebring Country Club and a former member and president of the Sebring Garden Club and Sebring Women's Club. She was a member of Alliance Chapter #296 of the Eastern Stars. She was a loving mother and is survived by a daughter, Maryellen of North Canton. Calling hours will be held at the Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home 2- 9 p.m. on Thursday with the family present 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with John Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sebring/West Branch Community Foundation.

Gertrude C. Spires, age 94, of North Canton, OH, died on Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center. Member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Canton, and the Ladies Guild of the church. A retired Registered Nurse. Survivors include brother, Charles (Isabelle) Hammack of San Diego, CA; sister, Helen Hogan of San Diego, CA; nieces and nephews, Carol Yavno, Julie Gorton, Dr. Michael Hammack all of San Diego, CA, and Dr. Mark Pizzato of North Carolina. Preceded in death by her husband, Harry Spires; parents; one brother and one sister. Graveside service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary Cemetery of Lancaster, OH with Rev. Fr. Donald Franks officiating. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 833 39th St. NW, Canton, with Fr. John R. Nentwick officiating. Glenn L. Hummel
Glenn L. Hummel, age 68, of Canton, died Wednesday in Aultman Hospital. Born in San Francisco, CA, he had lived in Akron, moving to Canton about 30 years ago. He was a Korean War Army veteran, and was a member of the Asbestos Workers Local #84. He was a life member of the Amvets and was a member of the Moose and Eagles Lodges, the V.F.W., the American Legion, and the Slovak Club. Survived by his wife, Mona V. Hummel; two daughters, Debra Harmon of Akron and Linda Bowen (Dan) of Tallmadge, OH; a son, Glenn L. Hummel II of North Canton; two stepsons, Ronald Louis (Jan) of Norton, OH and Richard Louis (Germaine) of Canton; eight grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Wayne Marks and Larry Hummel. Preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Aileen Hummel and a half-brother, Ronald Marks. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the Lamiell Funeral Home with Pastor Grace Baughman officiating. Jack N. Nigro
Jack N. Nigro, age 66, of Minerva died Wednesday June 20, 2001 in Aultman Hospital following a short illness. He was born Nov. 25, 1934 in Malvern to the late Mike Nigro and Mae (Campbell) Nigro Carnahan, He retired from Hannon Electric in Canton after 30 year of service as International Manager. He is a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Minerva and was a US Navy Veteran. He graduated from Malvern High School in 1952 and Akron University with a Degree in Electrical Engineering. He is a member of the American Legion and the North Canton Elks. He is survived by his wife, Connie (Campbell) Nigro whom he married May 28, 1995; three step-daughters, Mrs. Kurt (Sheree) Larson of Minerva, Christee Sfassie of Windermere, FL, Mrs. Dee (Tammee) Gamble Tiller of Salineville; a sister, Mrs. Tom (Nancy) McDonald of Canton; a brother, Tom and wife, Cathy Romano of Oxford, OH; seven grandchildren, Dana Larson of Canton, Ryan and Dustin Sfassie of Windermere, FL, Deanna, Shane, Dylan and Sarah Tiller of Salineville; several nieces and nephews. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Minerva with Rev. Msgr. John M. Campbell as celebrant. Jacquelyn Smith, age 69, of Canton, passed away early Tuesday morning. A member of Amvets Post 124. She was preceded in death by husband, Burl Smith and son, John Hill. Survived by children, Ruhama Smith, Peggy Anstine, Paula Hill, Sean Hill and Tim Smith; sisters, Sue Wise and Esther Bungard; brother, Roger Koontz; grandchildren, Jamie, Anya, Arsenio, Hank, Greta, Kari; great-grandchild, Ian. Leo F. Carraher
Leo F. Carraher, age 70, of Massillon, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001 in Doctors
Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born in Lyndhurst, OH. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. A former letter carrier with Canton U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1988 after 30 years of service. An avid bowler, he also enjoyed watching drag racing. Preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his wife, Marion (Cice) Carraher, they would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17, 2001; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Gordon Fothergill of Massillon; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Mary Carraher of Massillon; grandchildren, Aaron Salamon of Canton, Courtney and Bruce Noftsinger of Massillon. Graveside services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Rev. Paul Myers will officiate. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.

Mary M. Pacurar, age 80, of Canton, died Saturday afternoon in Manor Care. Born Oct. 3, 1920 in Canton to the late Andy and Stella Prehodick. She was a former Press Operator at A.C. Tower. Preceded in death by her husband, Charles Pacurar. Survived by one son, Robert; several good friends including her neighbor, Dorothy Herbeth. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours Thursday (today) one hour prior to the services 10-11 a.m.
Matilda R. (Boettler) Finnell
Mrs. Matilda R. (Boettler), Finnell died Tuesday, June 19, 2001 in Lake Park at the age of 105. She was born August 22, 1895 to Lewis and Sarah (Cramer) Boettler in Akron, OH. Mrs. Finnell taught in a schoolhouse that was located on her family's property in Green Twp. In the 1990's, this area was declared a national historic site. Her parents, husband, Roy D. Finnell and son, Alvin E. Hargreaves preceded her in death. Surviving is her granddaughters, Laurel A. Lloyd of Florida and Rebecca Bigelow of Wyoming; grandson, James E. Hargreaves of Florida; and great-granddaughter, Kate Bigelow. There will be no visitation. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, June 22, 2001 at 1 p.m. in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery, 6382 Monroe St., Sylvania, OH. Pete Kovick
Pete Kovick, age 66, of Canton, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 19, 2001 in the residence following a two month illness. Born in Allison, PA, April 30, 1935 to his parents the late Charles and Anna Kovick, he lived most of his life in the Canton area and was a retired employee of the Timken Co., retiring in 1995 after 40 years of service. Mr. Kovick was a member of grace Community Church of Massillon and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was a very special and loving person. Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret A. Kovick of the home to whom he was married 43 years; three sons and their spouses, Mark A. and Julie Kovick of Green, OH., John M. Kovick of Columbus, OH., Troy M. Kovick and his fiancee, Jennifer Clarke of Canton, OH; his granddaughter, Nichole Kovick of Green, OH' two sisters, pat Sosinski and Mary DiGiambattista both of Canton, OH; his brother, Andy Kovick of Aurora, OH. There are several nieces and nephews also surviving. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Bragg officiating. Phillip J. Carona
Phillip J. Carona, age 87, of Canton, passed away Tuesday evening in Altercare of Canton after a extended illness. He was born in Krebs, OK., and has resided in the Canton area most of his life. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, a member of North Canton Eagles Aiere #2223 and a member of Ben Marconi Sons of Italy Lodge. He was a graduate of McKinley High School in 1932. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the Army Air Force. He was a retired employee of St. Regis Paper Products Co. having been employed for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Carona on May 2, 1977; his parents, Phillip and Domenica Carona; two brothers, Nicholas and Campbell Carona. He is survived by three nieces, Joan and James Massengale of Canton, Phyllis and Lane Talbott of Navarre, Joyce and Robert Boyd of FL; a nephew, Nick and Kathy Carona of Canton; sister-in-law, Mary Carona of Navarre, OH; a number of great nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be sung Friday June 22, 2001 at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony Church with Rev. Fr. James McKarns as celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Robert J. Brenner, age 74, of Canton, OH, passed away Wednesday afternoon in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Canton on June 26, 1926 he was a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Navy. He was a retired employee of Republic Steel Corp., Berger Division, retiring in 1988 after 36 years of service. He was a member of the Slovak Club. Preceded in death by his wife, Gloria B. Brenner, who passed away February 2, 1996; a sister, Dorothy Luckett; and a brother, Keith Brenner. Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Bob E. and Renee Brenner of Navarre and William J. Brenner of Canton; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela J. and Larry Burgess of Canton; three brothers, Arnold Bud Brenner of Los Angeles, CA, Jerry Brenner Pollock of Anaheim, CA, and Herman Brenner, Jr. of Massillon; four sisters, Betty Lou Moretz of Florida, Jane Drummond of Londonderry, OH, Shirley Gottleib of Reseda, CA and Sandy McNutt of Mineral City; seven grandchildren. Terry J. Laird
Terry J. Laird, age 54, of Massillon, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning June 20, 2001. He was born in Canton on February 18, 1947 to John W. Mary Louise (Ford) Laird and was a Perry High School Graduate. Terry served in the Navy from 1966-1970, and for the past 30 years had been a technician for Time Warner Cable. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Laird in 1996. Survived by his wife of 33 years, Jackie (Hopps); daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Steve Summerfield of Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Tim Kristen Laird of Wadsworth, OH; mother, Mary Louise Laird of Canton; brother, Rod Laird of WY; grandchildren, Jessica, Steven, Tiffany, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Amanda; and four pet cats, Mousie, Smokie, Bootsie, and Tigger. Winifred Leigh Raftery
Winifred Leigh Raftery, age 83 of Sacramento, Ca. passed away Monday, June 18, after a brief illness. A former resident of Canton, Winnie was the daughter of the late Henry and Agnes Snasdell of Antioch, CA. Proceeded in death by her devoted husband of 54 years, Dr. Alan (Pete) Raftery. She is survived by her eight children: four sons and four daughters, Jim Raftery (Mary) of Burlingame, CA; Dr. Jack Raftery (Kathy) of Traverse City, MI; Bill Raftery (Jean) of Canton, OH; Dan Raftery of San Francisco, CA; Gail Faye (Pat) of Longmont, CO; Gwen Raftery of Littleton, CO; Gena Sarnowsky (Mike) of Concord, NH; and Gerre Young (Barry) of Inverness, CA. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren (Creed, Barrett, Heather, Meagan, Quinn, Josh, Rusty, Kelly, Chrissy, Jill, Grant, Jason, Elaine, Lauren, Gavin, Art and Lydia), and many special relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in San Pablo, CA on Friday, June 22, 2001, with Father Paul Raftery presiding.
