Alfred Mayle, age 71, of Canton, passed away Thursday afternoon in Aultman Hospital following a four month illness. Born Aug. 2, 1929 in Philippi, WV. He had worked six years as a construction worker, five years for Canton Pattern and 16 years for Bonnot Foundry of Canton, retiring as a grinder. Preceded in death by parents, James (Jimbo) and Etta Mayle; three brothers, Gus, Philip, Leander Mayle; nephew, Wilkie Mayle. Survived by his former wife, Betty Mayle of Canton; two daughters, Rosemary Cutshall of Canton, Linda Himes of Junior, WV; two sons, Hayward Lee Woods of Philippi, WV and Dwayne Mayle of Paris, OH; four sisters, Sarah Tabler and Carrie Tabler, both of Malvern, Stella Dalton of Canton and Flo Ann Mayle of Louisville; three brothers, Ira (Cab) Mayle, James (Dump) Mayle, both of Philippi, WV, Junior Mayle of Canal Fulton; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Canton Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Marvin Jack Mayle officiating. Friends may call Saturday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 7-9 p.m. in the Waltner-Simchak Funeral Home. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

August Liermann Jr
August Liermann, Jr., age 77, of North Canton, died Thursday afternoon in Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Penowa, PA, he had resided here most of his life. Mr. Liermann retired after 30 years of service as a tax examiner with the Ohio Department of Taxation. He was a 1941 graduate of McKinley High School and a 1949 graduate of Ohio State University. He served during World War II in the Navy as a Motor Machinist Mate 1st Class in the European Theatre. Mr. Liermann was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Our Lady of Peace Men's Club, Knights of Columbus Council #341 and Secular Franciscans. An avid gardener, Augie and his wife, Eileen until 1990 fostered 43 infants from birth until their adoption. Preceded in death by a son, Philip, in 1974; five brothers, Charles, Matthew, Frederick, Francis and Joseph; two sisters, Gertrude Lilly and Zita Murphy. Survivors include his wife, Eileen (McCaulley) to whom he had been married for 35 years; daughter, Donna Liermann of W. Hollywood, CA; son, Lawrence of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Mary Cuenot and Rita Liermann, both of Canton; brother, James of Aztec, NM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. John Nentwick as officiant. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday 1-4 p.m. in the Spiker-Foster-SHRIVER Funeral Home, 4817 Cleveland Ave. NW. Beth Smoot
Elizabeth Ann (Smoot) West was born February 21, 1941 and transitioned from her earthly home on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at 7:04 p.m. atDeKalb Medical Center, Decatur, GA, following an extensive illness. She was surrounded, as she wished, by loving family and friends. Libby as she was affectionately called, was the first of five children born to the late George West and Matilda Stewart West. She was born in Wheeling, WV, but was reared in the small farming community of Smithfield, OH. Libby was educated in the public school of Smithfield, OH, in Jefferson County. She continued her education at Kent State University and Stark Tech Secretarial School. After relocating to metro Atlanta, she joined Greenforest Community Baptist Church in June 1986 and served as a faithful member until her transition. She was a member of the church executive staff, serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Executive Pastor. A member of the Cancer Support Group. Not only was Libby His handmaiden, she was a servant to the community. She broke ground with many firsts in her life. She was the first female to serve on the board of the Canton, OH Chamber of Commerce, the first woman to serve as an insurance representative with the John Hancock Insurance Company in Canton and the first female commissioner of the Canton Midget Football League. She taught parenting classes for the DeKalb County Foster Parents Association. Her past and present civic involvement includes: The Jefferson County Civic Club and Right of Way Association in Canton, OH, the DeKalb Foster Parent's Association, Continental Societies Decatur-Stone Mountain Chapter and The Coalition of 100 Black Women, Decatur-DeKalb Chapter. Her community service was rewarded with several awards, including the Jefferson County Civic Club Outstanding Achievement Award and Right of Way Agent. Libby's employment in DeKalb included Agnes Scott College, Georgia State University and Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Operations for the South DeKalb YMCA, a position held for three years until becoming employed with Greenforest Community Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish memories of her life, her four sons, Shawn (Cari) West of Canton, OH, Ramond Corey RC: Smoot of Lithonia, GA, Jodie Thomas JT (Linda) Smoot of Stone Mountain, GA, Stuart Smoot Latimore of Belmont, CA; adopted sons, Oscar (Denise) Skinner of Massillon, OH, and Robert Bobby Perkins of Santa Ana, CA; seven grandchildren; her sibling twins, Mary Kay Lightner and Marion G. (Debbie) West of Alliance, OH; brothers, Spencer E. (Lynann) West of Massillon, OH, and Silas C. (Carolyn) West of Canton, OH; numerous aunts and uncles, including Gladys Castle of Dillvale, OH, Charmaine Ball of Niagra Falls, NY, Imogene Hendricks and Shirley Dokes of Steubenville, OH, Clairise Redmon of Williamsville, OH, John Stuart, Clyde Stuart and Donnie Stuart, all of Flushing, OH, and Marion Stuart of Martins Ferry, OH; other close and loving family in Ohio, Kenneth E. Toney, Sr., Kenneth (Charlotte) Toney, Jr., Keane O. (Sharon) Toney, Keith (Rosa) Toney, Kayanne Toney, Cynthia King Graham, Connie Vinson, Wilma Bess Lipkins, Cokey (Zonna) Crues, Bennard (Marsha) Hunt; and family friend, Willie Paul Milan; 19 nieces and nephews; 34 great-nieces and nephews; and devoted friend and companion, Sam Fleming; and a host of church family and friends. Bonnie L. Jensen
Bonnie L. Jensen, age 54, of Canton, died Wednesday evening in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born October 5, 1946, in Lewistown, PA., to the late Marshall and Reba Stouffer. She was a member of Canton Baptist Temple. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Jerry Stouffer. Survivors include her husband, Robert Jensen of the home; one dau-ghter, Tracy Tausch of Massillon; one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Tricia Jensen of East Canton; there are five grandchildren: Joshua, Kimberly, Brittaney, Kyle and Jacob; three sisters, Barbara Varner and Donna Kuhn both of Canton, Marcia Lowery of South Bend, Indiana; and three brothers, Marlin Stouffer of Lewistown, PA., Jammie Stouffer of Perry Twp. and Rodney Stouffer of Canton; there are several nieces and nephews also surviving. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Henniger officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. David A. Pettas
David A. Pettas, age 57, made his home for the past ten years with Barbara and Robert Derlich of Louisville, OH, passed away Thursday evening, March 22, 2001 in Aultman Hospital. Born in Canton, OH, March 6, 1944, to his parents the late Andrew and Addie (Williams) Pettas, he had attended Stark Elementary School and the MRDD Workshop. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Stahlman. Survivors include four sisters, Lucille Roush of North Canton, OH, Catherine Franzen, Helen Land and Irene Foster, all of Canton, OH; three brothers, James Longwell of Canton, OH, Eugene Stahlman of Navarre, OH, Mearl Stahlman of Uniontown, OH; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday 1:30 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond L. Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Monday 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Diane T. McKelley
Diane T. McKelley, age 38, of North Canton, OH, passed away Thursday afternoon at the home following an extended illness. Born in Massillon on May 3, 1962, she was a 1980 graduate of Timken High School and a graduate of Akron University. She received her Masters in Education from Ashland University and was a teacher for 16 years in the Canton Public School System, having taught at Cedar Elementary School. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and had been involved with the Canton Professional Educators Assoc. as a building representative. Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey McKelley and three daughters, Megan, Lauren and Caitlin McKelley, all of the home; her parents, Roman and Billie Todoran of Canton; three brothers, Dave Todoran of Creston, OH, Dan Todoran of Newark, OH and Tim Todoran of Canton; her niece and two nephews, Kristen, Patrick and Adam. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Rev. Dr. Carey Sloan officiating. Calling hours at the Reed Funeral Home Sunday 2-5 p.m. and one hour before the services at the church on Monday 10-11 a.m. Her wishes were to be cremated following the services and her cremains will be placed in a nich at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Dorothy Jean Everett Tomporoski
Dorothy Jean Everett Tomporoski, age 79, of Massillon died Tuesday in Eustis, FL following a sudden illness. Born in and lived her entire life in Massillon. She was a retired secretary with Eaton Manufacturing with 40 years service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she formerly served as secretary. Preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mae Dunlap, first husband, Kenneth T. Everett, April 4, 1989, and a brother. She is survived by her husband, Frank Tomporoski; son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Vickie Everett of Malvern; granddaughter, Krysta L. Everett; grandson, Sean M. Everett; and brother, Stanley Dunlap of Stuart, FL. Services will be Monday 1 p.m. at Atkinson-Feucht-Shaidnagle in Massilllon with Rev. Leslie A. Peine officiating. Fred Scharver
Fred Scharver, age 60, former resident of East Canton, OH, passed away Friday, March 16, 2001 after a short illness. Burial in Ft. Sill, OK, where he was stationed for 20 years in the Army. Survived by wife; daughter; son; four grandchildren.

James Robert Jewell
James Robert Jewell, age 75, of Malvern, died in Mercy Medical Center Thursday evening, March 22, 2001 following a short illness. Born June 29, 1925 in Salineville, OH. He was an auto mechanic. A Navy (Merchant Marines) veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Martha (Henrick) Jewell of the home; brothers, Michael Jewell of Guilford Lake, OH, John R. Jewell of Hanoverton and Jeff Jewell of Willoughby Hills, OH. Preceded in death by daughter, Jacquelyn Shasteen of Salem. Memorial service will be held at the Bartley Funeral Home, Minerva, Monday, March 26, 2001 at 10 a.m. with Msgr. John Michael Campbell officiating. Joseph A. Eafrate
Joseph A. Eafrate, age 69 of Canton, OH., passed away Thursday afternoon in Doctors Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Canton on November 21, 1931 he was a retired car salesman, having worked at several area automobile dealerships and receiving several awards as outstanding salesman. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Dymphna National Shrine in Massillon and the Loyal Order of Moose #233. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Anna Eafrate; and two sisters, Esther Maruca and May Jane Longenecker. Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patsy and Wilbur Shreffler of Canton and Rita and David Wyandt of Magnolia; brother-in-law, John Longenecker of Louisville. There are numerous nieces and ne-phews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday (TODAY) at 11:30 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Fr. Matthew Herttna officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Section at North Lawn Cemetery. Julius A. Pucci
Julius A. Jiggs Pucci, age 90, of Canton, passed away Thursday afternoon after a brief illness. Born in Fulton Run, PA, to the late Policarpo and Amelia (Lassafare) Pucci, he had been a Canton resident most of his life. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Northern Italian Club and the Fraternal Order of Police. Jiggs was a retired detective having retired first from the Canton City Police Dept., and then the Stark County Sheriff's Dept. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice M. (Concato) Pucci; son, Joseph; daughter, Amelia; grandson, Paul Pucci, Jr.; brothers, Alfred, Edward, Leo; sister, Parmelia Andaloro. Survived by daughters and son-in-law, Joanne, Buch of California, Anita and Don Farelli of Massillon; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Sr. and Roseann Pucci of Louisville; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Alma Risaliti of Pittsburgh, PA; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Pucci, Laura Pucci, both of Canton; many nieces and nephews. Leroy E. Vanicek
Leroy E. Ernie Vanicek, age 59, of Louisville, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his home following an extended illness. Ernie was born November 28, 1941 in Martins Ferry, OH, the son of the late Ernest and Carol (Ruskin) Vanicek. He was a member of the F.O.E. Louisville Aerie #2374 and the German American Club. Ernie was a self-employed contractor who enjoyed carpentry, golfing, fishing and gardening. Ernie leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Patricia (Aventino) whom he married March 29, 1962; two daughters and a son-in-law, Denise and Randy Norris of Louisville and Katherine Vanicek of Canton; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Diana Vanicek and Joe and Carolee Vanicek, all of Louisville; a sister, Diana Bradley of Ontario, CA; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Lois Vanicek of East Sparta; two step-sisters, Diana Vanicek and Debbie Swogger, both of Canton; eight grandchildren, Brittnee, Jonathan, Taylor, Kristen, Ashlee, Zackery, Dylan and Josie; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Marie Blackman
Marie Blackman, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2001 at McKinley Health Care Center. She was born on August 10, 1911 to Charles and Ida (Webb) Syph. She married David Holman Sr. and from this union, one son, David Jr. was born. On March 5, 1949, she married Patrick Blackman and raised his three children, Patrick Jr. (Bro), James (Ray) and Yvonne (Tut), as her own. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Blackman Sr., sons, David Holman Jr. and Patrick Blackman Jr., brothers, Charles Syph, Adolf Syph, Cleophus Syph and Harold Syph, sisters, Lucille Russell, Leola Johnson, Ruth Turner Beatrice Syph. She was a member of Sherrick Road Church of God, where she was a Deaconess, choir member, Missionary Board Member and Youth Fellowship President. She leaves to cherish her memory, son, James E. Blackman of Germany; daughter, Yvonne L. Marvin R. Roush
Marvin R. Roush, age 73, went to be with God on March 22, 2001 after a brief illness at Aultman Hospital. Born in Canton December 23, 1927 to his parents the late Carl Roush Sr. and Esther Roush, he was a retired employee of Republic Steel. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1949. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, whom he married on May 24, 1952, Janice L. Roush; his loving son, Gilbert E. Roush of Canton OH; his loving daughter and son-in-law, Janice D. and Wayne D. Spencer of Navarre, OH; grandchildren, Jamie and his wife, Robyn Spencer of Canton, OH, Kevin and his wife, Nicole Spencer of North Carolina, Melanie Black of Canton, Sabrina Swogger of Canton; his brother, Carl H. Nadine L. (Clark) Lehmer, age 40, of North Canton died Friday in Aultman Hospital. She was a 1978 graduate of Hoover High School and owner /operator of Classic Drive Thru in Canton. Survived by husband of six years, Thomas Lehmer; parents, William and Jeanette (Kasper) Clark of North Canton; son, Corey; daughters, Ashley and Kaitlin, all at home; paternal grandmother, Margaret Clark of Lakewood; sister, Lorraine Clark of Massillon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Neil and Kelly Clark of Columbus, Eric and Becky Clark of Canton; sister, Dana Clark of Tampa, FL; several uncles; uncles; nieces; and nephews. Preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Albert Clark; and maternal grandparents, George and Lillian Kasper. Philip Iffland
Philip Iffland, age 83, was born April 11, 1917 and died March 3, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret E. (Adam) Iffland. Survived by son, Dr. Philip H.; wife, Karyn; and grandsons, Philip and William of Canton, OH; and son, Henry; wife, Beverly of Cleveland, OH. Mr. Iffland was a recipient of the Bronze Star of heroic service in World War II and an Akron area jeweler for over 50 years. Memorial services were private at Mr. Iffland's request. Rev. Allen Purdom Jr.
The Rev. Allen B. Purdom Jr., age 74, of 929 W. Summit St., Alliance died in his home Friday, March 23, 2001. He had lived in Alliance since 1996, before that Winter Park, FL for 25 years. Rev. Purdom was born at Wauchula, FL on December 16, 1926 to his parents, the late Allen Bradford Purdom and Lena (Morrison) Purdom. He was a graduate of Wauchula High School, University of Florida (BA), Berkley Division School Yale (STM), University of the South, Sewanee TN with Masters in Sacred Theology. He was ordained in 1958, and served as Priest for over 40 years at the Episcopal Church. He served as Canon to the Ordinary Diocese of Central Florida 1970-1989, President of the Florida Council of Churches, Associate Dean for Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL. He served as Rector for several Parishes in Central Florida, and currently served as Priest of St. Michael and All Angels in Uniontown. OH. He was also a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Navy. He is survived by two daughters, Britton King of Deltona, FL and Amanda March of Maitland, FL; a son, The Rev. Bradford Purdom of Alliance; sister, Sara Ann Lee of Wauchula, FL; seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Uniontown at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2001 with the Rt. Rev. Frank Gray, Assistant Bishop of Virginia and The Rt. Rev. Arthur Williams, Bishop Suffragan of Ohio officiating. Interment will be in Wauchula, FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Michael and All Angels Church, 13118 Church Ave., Uniontown, OH 44685.

Ruth E. Fry
Ruth E. (Goff) Fry, age 84, of Massillon, died Friday afternoon at the McKinley Health Care Center in Canton. Her death followed a lengthy illness. She was born on October 28, 1916, in West Union, WV and was the daughter of the late Elmer L. and Delphia (Knight) Smith. She was an area resident since 1937. She was a homemaker and a member of the Massillon Baptist Temple. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Goff, her sons, Richard and Larry Goff, her stepson, Ronald Fry, three brothers and five sisters. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Ray F. Fry of the home; her daughter, Janet Urban of Canton; her sons, Edward Paul Goff and David Goff both of Massillon; and her stepson, Neil Fry of Bolivar, OH, Larry Fry of Massillon; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home with Rev. W. Jay Dolvin officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5-8 p.m. and one hour before the services. Memorial contributions may be to the Alzheimer's Association, 4815 Munson Ave. NW, Canton, OH 44718.
