Ruth Benedict
Ruth I. Benedict, 66, of Mt. Gilead died Thursday (June 17, 1999) in the Kobacher House in Columbus.
She was born on August 10, 1932, in Johnstown to the late Gladys Marie Tippett Brush Goodman and Arthur Brush, who survives in Galion.
She was a resident of Morrow County most of her life and graduated from Mt. Gilead High School in 1952.
She was a homemaker and gardener who helped operate the family farm, and was also a retired supervisor for the United Telephone Co. for over 20 years and former employee of the Mt. Gilead School System. She was a member of the Tangerine Twig at Morrow County Hospital, Wayside Garden Club, Creative Homemakers Club and the United Telephone Pioneers Association.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Charlotte S. Benedict of Marion and Debra and Donald Buchanan of Marysville; a brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Elaine Brush of Myrtle Beach; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and June Benedict of Nyssa, Ore.; and niece and nephew, Cindy Rogers of Columbus and John Brush of Washington.
Along with her mother, she was preceded in death on April 12, 1997 by her husband, Amos S. "Butch" Benedict, whom she married on July 3, 1953.
Visitation was held at the Craven Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, where funeral services were held with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Schultz officiating. Burial was in Rivercliff Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or Morrow County Hospice.
Beatrice Bennett
Beatrice B. Bennett, 104, formerly of Marengo and 289 N. Union St., died Monday morning (June 14, 1999) at Wintersong Village Nursing Facility.
She was born Dec. 23, 1894, in Ashley to Oscar and Laura (Randolph) Beardsley. She was a farmer's wife, a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a past chief of the Marengo Pythian Sisters.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Dorothy Bennett of Delaware; and a sister, Pansey Huffman of Bradenton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin Bennett, who died in 1970.
Visitation was held at Bennett Brown Rodman Funeral Home, Delaware, where funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Bloomfield Cemetery, Centerburg.
Glenn Bennett
Glenn Irwin Bennett, 84, Delaware, died unexpectedly Tuesday (February 5, 2002) in Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Florida.
He was born December 19, 1917, in Marengo, to Irwin Bennett and Beatrice (Beardsley) Bennett. A Delaware resident since 1945, he was a partner in the Bennett Brown Funeral Home from 1952 until his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Bennett was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where for many years he served as treasurer, Kiwanis Club of Delaware, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks No. 76 and Delaware Moose Lodge.
He also was a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 18, where he served as treasurer for 30 years, the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Delaware County Scottish Rite Club, where he was secretary for more than 25 years, Delaware Chapter No. 54 Sidney Moore Council No. 84 and the Aladdin Temple Shrine.
He enjoyed golfing and boating on Lake Erie.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two stepdaughters, Susan Rowoldt and Marsha Jones, both of Delaware; six stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and four cousins, Paul Burns of Texas, and Ronald Burns and Donald Huffman, both of California, and Mike VanDivort of Ohio.
His first wife, Nellie, died in 1987.
Visiting hours were Sunday (February 10, 2002) at Bennett Brown Rodman
Funeral Home, Delaware, where Hiram Masonic Lodge performed Masonic rites. Services were held at the funeral home with the Reverend Dr. Warren Campbell-Gaston of Asbury United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial was in Bloomfield Cemetery near Sparta.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Raymond E. Beougher
Raymond E. Beougher, 88, of Columbus died Saturday (March 21).
He was a retired battalion chief for the Columbus Fire Department. He was a member of the F. & A.M. Neoacacia Lodge 595, Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus, the Old Buzzards, Westerville Art League and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and Blendon Senior Citizens.
Ray also worked for the monthly newspaper for Minerva Park and was responsible for the overall layout work for the fire department's Unit 4 newspaper, posters, and special events papers from 1956 through 1995.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Beougher; grandsons and wives, Matthew and Amy Beougher, Brian and Daphne Beougher; granddaughter, Molly Beougher; great-grandchildren, Nickolas and Emylee Beougher; step-son and wife, Mick and Sandra Burlingame; grandsons and wives, Robert and Kathy Burlingame, Vince Burlingame, Tony and Lesley Burlingame; great-grandchildren, Michelle, Jerime and Chris Burlingame; step-daughter and husband, Nancy and Ray Finnerty; grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Lynda Finnerty, Pam and Mike Mesharer, Terrie Finnerty, Tracie Brown; great-grandchildren, Amy Finnerty, Timmy Brown, Vince Mesharer.
The funeral service was held at the Long Funeral Home on Cleveland Ave. in Columbus. The Rev. Carlton Sutorius presided. Internment was at the Union Cemetery. A memorial may be given to Shrine Hospitals for Children, Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229.
Dr. R. Scott Berger
Dr. R. Scott Berger, 41, Sunbury, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri, died unexpectedly Monday (January 21, 2002) morning at Mount Carmel Medical Center.
He was born in St. Louis on March 20, 1960 to Richard Berger and Sandra (Gould) Silverman, both of St. Louis. He was a loving and caring father and husband.
Berger was Director of Program Development at Buckeye Ranch in Grove City and in private practice in association with Central Ohio Counseling in Worthington.
He was a member of the American Psychological Association; American Psychological Association, Division of Clinical Psychology; and Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.
Berger enjoyed baseball and played in over Thirty and Forty leagues.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Laurie (Schmeller) Berger who he married August 12, 1988 in Rocky River, Ohio; two daughters, Katherine and Alexandra of the home; and a son, Benjamin of the home. In addition to his parents, also surviving are his stepfather, Jarrett H. Silverman of St. Louis; grandparents, Selma and Gabe Gould of St. Louis; half-brothers Jeff and Jim Berger of St. Louis; sisters-in-law, Ann and Jim Kumse, Helen and Paul Dessen, Fran and Jim Moore, Roberta and Tom Schmid, and Lynn Schmeller as well as nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours were at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61, Sunbury, followed by services with Chaplain John Cantrell officiating. A graveside service was held in the United Hebrew Temple Cemetery, University City, Missouri.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Berger Children Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
Charles Berry
Charles E. Berry, 77, Beach City, died Thursday (June 3, 1999) at his residence following an illness.
He was born in Louisa, Ky., to the late Samuel and Minnie Katherine (Thompson) Berry.
He had been a Beach City resident for two years. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and retired from Rockwell International of Columbus. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a former deacon at Sunbury First Baptist Chirch and a member of the Johnstown Baptist church.
He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Donna and Jeffrey Mitchell, Johnstown, Charlene Neel, North Canton, and Phyllis Berry, at home; one brother Willie (Bill) Berry, Ironton; two sisters Lucille Lintz and Betty Marsh, both of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carlena Fisher Berry, on Dec. 5, 1998; and one sister.
Calling hours were at Lantzer Funeral Home, Beach City. Funeral services were helf with the Rev. James Mock officiating. Interment was at North Lawn Mausoleum, North Canton.
Kathryn Best
Kathryn L. Best, 90, of Delaware, died Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4, 2000) at The Arbors of Delaware following an extended illness.
Born on Aug. 3, 1910, on the family homestead farm in Centerburg to the late Guy and Martha Fern (Thurston) Best, she worked as a bookkeeper for Starner Milling and retired as a switchboard operator with GTE. She resided in Sunbury before moving to Delaware and was a member of Sunbury United Methodist Church and the church's Ruth Circle.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son. Surviving is her sister, Dorothy Glenn of Sunbury.
Graveside funeral services were held at Berkshire Cemetery with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Arrangements were in the care of DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury.
Trent L. Bethel
U.S. Army Sgt. Trent L. Bethel passed away Thursday (November 15, 2001) in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Formerly of Westerville, he was a 1989 graduate of Big Walnut High School.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Bethel.
Surviving are his mother, Nancy Bethel Smith; three sons, Joshua Thomas, Caleb Gary, and Aaron Michael Bethel; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Trevor and Brittany Bethel, Robert Smith, and Thomas Smith; and his stepfather, Robert Smith.
Visitation was held at Cotner Funeral Home, Reynoldsburg, where funeral services were held with the Rev. Russ Merrin and Major William Underwood officiating. Interment was in Glen Rest Memorial Estate.

Charles E. "Bubbles" Bevelhymer
Charles R. "Bubbles" Bevelhymer, 61, Marengo, died Friday, May 18, 2001 at his home.
Bevelhymer was formerly employed at Clark Grave Vault in Columbus and the Meijer's Store at Polaris. He was a member of Moose Lodge #1245, Whitehall, and the Sunbury Eagles Aerie #3614.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard, and a sister, Judy Bevelhymer.
Bevelhymer is survived by his former wife, Davis Jean Bevelhymer; two daughters, Pearl Lynn Bevelhymer of, Marengo and Karla (Lee) Fleming of Columbus; a son, Nelson (Crystal) Bevelhymer, and grandson, Cody, of Westerville; his mother, Margaret Bevelhymer of Westerville; two sisters, Ruth Kaiser of Westerville and Florence Cremeans of Columbus; a brother, Jerry (Debbie) Bevelhymer of West Milton; and by numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Visitation was at Moreland Funeral Home, Westerville where services were held. Interment was in Fancher Cemetery.
Charlotte Bing
Charlotte (Gilkerson) Bing, 69, Marengo (formerly of Ferris Road, Columbus), stepped into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Nov. 18 at home after a two-year battle with heart disease.
She was born Nov. 12, 1931 in Hetzel, W.Va. to the late Kenneth and Edna Gilkerson. Charlotte was the eldest of their 10 children.
On June 14, 1948 she married Lester (Dort) Bing in Catlettsburg, Ky. After retiring from the State of Ohio, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Charlotte and Dort moved to the Sparta/Chesterville area. Charlotte was a member at North Woodbury Alliance Church, but most recently attended NewLife Community Church in Fredericktown. Charlotte enjoyed praising and testifying about her Lord, encouraging her family and attending activities of her grandchildren.
Charlotte and Dort has loved, raised and influenced five daughters, one son and many "adopted" children through the years. She is survived by Dort, her husband of 52 years; daughters Kathryn Bing Tucker of Centerburg, Cumi (Steve) Roberts of Marengo, Vanessa (Andy) Brummel of West Liberty, Iowa, Delilah (Bryan) Hetterscheidt of Fredericktown, and Dort Denise (Dee Dee) Bing of Columbus; son Kenneth Bing of Columbus; grandchildren Wayne (Katrina) Souder of Delaware, Cumi Lee and Rhonda Marie Roberts of Marengo and Greg and Luke Hetterscheidt of Fredericktown; sisters Wilda (Clifford) Birt of Columbus, Joann Mounts of Columbus, Nancy Marquez of Columbus, and Carol (Fred) Francis of Columbus; brothers Tom (Faye) Gilkerson of Marengo, Dallas (Freda) Gilkerson of Columbus, Doug (Donna) Gilkerson of Columbus, Roger (Candy) Gilkerson of Middleburg and Darol (Loretta) Gilkerson of Columbus; sister-in-law Cumi Bragg of Alexandria, Va.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, Charlotte was preceded in death by an infant daughter Janice Kay, son-in-law Russell Tucker, brother-in-law Richard Mounts and sister-in-law Lois Gilkerson.
Visitation was at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury where the funeral services were held with the Reverend Dennis Turner and the Reverend Yogi Durbin officiating. Burial was in Northlawn Memorial Park, Westerville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to NewLife Community Church, Fredericktown or Hospice of Morrow County.
Irene Bingham
Irene Bingham, 82, died Sunday ( Sept. 17, 2000), in Arlington, Va.
She was born on Aug. 21, 1918, in Cadiz to the late Blaine and Jennie Hildreth. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister and sister Kathleen Roshon.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Darwin and Jean Bingham; two grandsons, Matthew and Michael; a granddaughter, Christine; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vance and Ellen Hildreth of Marengo and Floyd and Marcia Hildreth of Sunbury; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday at First Baptist Church, Sunbury, with the Rev. Larry Griffin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Grover Charles Bird
Grover Charles Bird, 84, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, died Tuesday (May 21, 2002) at the Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.
He was born on January 30, 1918 in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Jane Fredericks Bird. He moved to Hilton Head Island in January, 2001, from Sunbury.
Bird was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of Little Walnut Grange and Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Kurtz Bird of Mt. Gilead; a son, Ben Brian Bird of Delaware; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Tanya and Gary Young of Hilton Head Island and Jeanine and Chuck Wymer of Galena; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta Mason Bird.
Graveside services were held at Sunbury Memorial Park, Sunbury.

Peggy Ann Bishop
Peggy Ann Bishop, 72, Galena, died Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville.
She is survived by her husband, Walter; a son, Robert and his wife, Sandra; three grandchildren, Vanessa Lane and her fiance, Charles Socks, Tricia Youngblood and her husband, Christian, and Michael Bishop; three great-grandchildren, Nicole, Jessica and Charley; a nephew, Donald Meenan; a cousin, Alyce Thompson and her husband, Robert.
Visitation was at Moreland Funeral Home, Westerville. Graveside service and burial was at Union Cemetery, Columbus with Chaplain David Loynachan officiating.

Florence E. Blaker
Florence E. Blaker, 80, Galena, died Thursday morning (July 5, 2001) at her home. She was born on March 26, 1921 in Barnesville to the late Homer and Mable O'Neil Bowers. She moved to the Sunbury/Galena area 22 years ago from Columbus.
She worked in the home healthcare field as a private duty nurse and beautician. She attended Grace Brethern Church in Delaware.
Florence was an active golfer with the Westerville Ladies League. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and, most especially, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Clyde) Marcum of Galena; a son, Frank (Dosha) Blaker of Columbus; five grandchildren, Lisa, Justin, Kimberly, Cassandra and Shawn; four great-grandchildren, Nickolas, Grace, Taylor and Crystal; and by a sister, Jean Connor of Senecaville.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William, in 1987; a brother, James Bowers; and by two sisters, Clara DeLong and Mary Bowers.
Visitation was at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury. Burial will follow at a later date.

Charles Blackledge
Charles R. Blackledge, 57, Marengo, died Tuesday (April 13, 1999) at Grady Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 27, 1941, in Delaware County to the late Hubert and Evangeline (Hinderlong) Blackledge.
He was retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation where he worked in highway maintenance. He also worked for Delaware Cab Co.
He is survived by two daughters, Amy Blackledge and Janice Winterbower, Cardington; one grandson, Bradley Blackledge; two sisters, Clara Hatten, Marengo, and Mildred Kinnison, Cardington.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Blackledge.
Visitation was and funeral services were at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Marengo. Burial followed in Alum Creek Friends Church cemetery.
