Angeline V. Miller
Angeline V. (Abatangelo) Miller, age 84, of Canton, passed away Wednesday after an extended illness. A life resident of Canton, she was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles N. Miller; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Charlie Dembraski; great-grandson, Brian Marsh; two sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Jim Gallo of Canton; grandchildren and spouses, Brenda and Dennis Marsh, Teri and Donald Lautzenheizer, Julie and John Moldovan, Tony and Lori Gallo, Michael and Michelle Gallo; seven great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A Private Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family. For those who wish, donations can be made in Mrs. Miller's name to a hospice of your choice. Anna Belle Burton
Anna Belle Burton, age 85, formerly of 2160 Park Rd. SE, Carrollton, OH, died on Thursday, April 12, 2001, in the Altercare Nursing Home in Alliance, OH, following a one year illness. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Harsh Memorial U. Methodist Church in Harlem Springs with Rev. Jane Betts officiating. Burial will be in Harlem Springs Cemetery. Gordon L. Cook, Jr.
Gordon L. Cook, Jr., age 75, of Canton, unexpectedly passed away in the early morning hours of April 13, 2001. Gordon was born in Canton on July 24, 1925. He was one of eight children in the home of Gordon Sr. and Mary Catherine Cook. His sisters, Claira and Francis (deceased), and his brothers, William, Walter, Frank (deceased), Louis (deceased), and James (deceased) were each very special to Gordon. He took great pride in his siblings as well as his many nieces and nephews. Gordon graduated from Canton Mc-Kinley High School in 1945, where he was a superior athlete. In addition to lettering in football, basketball, and baseball, Gordon made All Ohio in football his junior year. After high school, Gordon joined the Army where he was promoted to Sergeant in the Military Police. He was honored with a World War II Victory Metal. Gordon married Agnes Bagnoli in 1953 and they were together for 39 years until her passing in 1992. He retired from Republic Steel in 1992 after 30 years of hard work. Gordon's profound love for his family will always be remembered. He will be missed by his two sons; two sons-in-law; three daughters and daughter-in-law, Greg Cook, Paula Cook, Brian and Valerie Cook, Cecilia and Ted Adams, and Laurie and Scott Dale. His five grandchildren, Nathaial and Christopher Adams, Ashley, Aaron and Austin Dale will always remember his sky-blue eyes and quick laugh. We will all miss him from the coast of South Carolina to the beaches of Hawaii. If there is a seashore in heaven, Gordon and Agnes Cook are now walking it together, once again, and for always. Mass of Christian Burial will be sung Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church with Msgr. John Finnigan as celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Harley D. Greenburg
Harley Dale Greenburg, age 72, of Temperance, MI, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in his home. Retired vice president of Engineering and Quality Assurance for Teledyne CAE in Toledo, he worked for Teledyne for over 40 years retiring July 1, 1997. He started working for Teledyne shortly after graduating in 1951 from Way-ne State University with a BSME in Mechanical Engineering. The son of William and Martha (Schwartz) Greenburg, he was born June 4, 1928, in Detroit, MI. Prior to his work at Teledyne, he served in the US Army during the Korean War as a projects engineer. He began his career at Teledyne CAE in Detroit in 1956. He moved to the Temperance area in 1970 when he was placed as Engineering Department Head at Teledyne's Toledo Plant. He was the Director of all R D Engineering efforts, engine designs and new business initiatives and was responsible for quality assurance, management and logistical support. An active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Lambertville for over 20 years, he assisted his church in many ways as past chairman, vice chairman, deacon, building committee and held about every office possible there and in 1997 was presented the Servant Award for his work. While attending Southeastern High School in Detroit, he was class president and valedictorian in a graduating class of 570 students. He earned 7 athletic Varsity letters and was all-city in track for the 440 yard dash. In 1950 he was voted the most versatile athlete at Wayne State University. At Wayne State, he earned 8 Varsity letters and was awarded 30 medals in track. He also was president of the Lutheran Student Association for 3 years. Harley was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Leadership Society. Although work was his life, he had a tremendous love and athletic ability for baseball. While playing for the U.S. Army, he pitched over 40 no-hitters, and pitched several games in which he struck-out the entire team (21 batters). Known nationally for his softball pitching prowess, in 1954, he was listed by Sports Illustrated as one of the 6 best softball pitchers in the United States. While in the Army, he pitched two All-Army softball tournaments and set four records. He was so good that as a young man he was being drafted into professional baseball by the New York Yankees when his dad intervened and insisted that his education was more important. Of all his achievements, he was proudest of becoming an Eagle Scout with 4 Palms and 55 merit badges. Harley was the first Scout in the Country to receive the Pro Deo et Patria award. He was past-president of the Detroit Management Club. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Albrecht June 27, 1971. October 6, 1976 he married Donna Jean Richardson in Canton, OH. She preceded him in death March 29, 1992. He is survived by his sister, Winifred Klinger; niece, Marilyn Tobeler of Grosse Pointe, MI; cousins, Don (Donna) Ellenger and brother-in-law, Edward (Patricia) Richardson of Canton, OH; and many dear friends. Friends may call Friday 4-8 p.m. in the Bedford Funeral Chapel, 8300 Lewis Ave., Temperance, MI. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Lutheran Church Sterns Road, Lambertville, MI by the Pastor, Rev. Ronald P. Scheer where his body will lie in state from 10 a.m. till time of service. Entombment will take place Monday at 1 p.m. in Northlawn Cemetery, Canton, OH. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

John Reed
John 'Red' Reed, age 84, of Canton, passed away Wednesday afternoon in McKinley Life Care where he was a resident. Born June 10, 1916 in Nashville, OH to the late Clarence and Ruth Reed. He lived most of his life in the Meyers Lake Village. He was a 1935 graduate of McKinley High School, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran having served in the Persian Gulf Theatre, was one of the original members of the Meyers Lake Fire Department and was a charter member of the Meyers Lake Sportsman Club. Preceded in death by his wife, Joan (Valot) Reed and one sister, Ruby Sichel. He was a loving father and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Guy and Linda Reed, John and Pat Reed, all of Canton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Katie and Bill Grosskopf of Canton and Joan Aileen and Matt Origo of Galeton, PA; two grandsons, Matthew Reed, Mitch (wife Cheryl) Reed; and granddaughters, Melanie Reed, Jenny and Charlotte Sturtz, Sara and Mary Daum and Gale Grosskopf; two great-grandchildren, Makenna and Alexis Sturtz; one niece, Ruth Reed. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Deb Beaver officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Justin Wilson Laird
Justin Wilson Laird, age 18, of Canton, OH, passed away Thursday afternoon at his home. Born in Canton on December 28, 1982, he had attended Timken High School and was self employed in construction and home improvements. He was a member of the Louisville Baptist Temple. Survivors include his father, David Laird of Canton and his mother, Lori Laird of Paris, TX; two brothers, Jason Laird and fiancee, Emily; and nephew, Jason II of Canton and Jeremy Laird of Texas; sister, Julia Laird of Texas; and half sister, Erin Marie of Canton; grandparents, Ervin and Donna Potts of East Canton, Dick and Barb Cordes of Paris, TX, Ed and Peg Fiori of Canton, Allen and Nancy Laird of Pontiac, MI; great-grandmother, Ruth Laird of Cambridge, OH; several aunts and uncles, Barb Parsons of Canton, Gail Laird of Louisville, Geno Parsons of Massillon, Jeff and Cris Calhoun of Paris, TX, Kelly and Gail Fiori of Texarkana, TX and Mr. and Mrs. Dino Fiori of Sandy Valley; his best friend and cousin, Derrick Parsons of Canton; special friend, Tyra Sullivan of Canton; numerous other cousins and friends. Laverta Close
Laverta Close, age 100, of Magnolia, passed away Friday morning in Park Village in Dover. She was born in East Sparta, a daughter of the late George and Minnie Yarger Halter and was a life resident of this area. Mrs. Close was a member of East Sparta Christian Church, a charter member of the New Idea Circle of the church and had served as Sunday School Supt. as well as Sunday School teacher. Preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, H. Gray Close on Oct. 31. 1989, and a great-granddaughter, Bethany Anne Cordes. Survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Kathleen Close, with whom she resided; two grandchildren, Mrs. Richard (Marybeth) Cordes of Magnolia, Thomas Close and his wife, Cindy of North Canton; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Ashley and Philip Cordes, and Joshua and Amanda Close. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia with Don Phelps officiating. Interment in East Sparta Cemetery. Mary Louise Bauer
Mary Louise Bauer, age 77, of North Canton, passed away Wednesday afternoon in St. Luke Lutheran Home after an extended illness. She was born in Canton, a daughter of the late Leo and Mae Shario Biedenbach, and was a life resident of this area. Mary Louise was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton. Survived by her husband, Jack L. Bauer, to whom she was married 53 years on Sept. 13, 2000; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Christina and David Amato of Bolivar, Kathleen and Randy Millat of Boardman, OH., and Lisa M. Bauer of North Canton; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Ramona Bauer of Milwaukee, WI., Terry Bauer and his fiancee, Barbara Adams of Cleveland and Patrick Bauer of Mt. Vernon, OH; one sister, Mrs. Helen Volzer of Canton; one brother, Robert Biedenbach of El Cajun, CA; and eight grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be sung on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton with Fr. Joseph Rudjak as Celebrant. Interment in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Robert F. Pitts
Robert F. Pitts, age 60, of East Rochester, OH., died April 12, 2001, at Akron General Hospital. Born June 4, 1940, in McCombs, Kentucky, to his parents, Garvin and Mable (Justice) Pitts of Hanoverton, OH. He spent most of his life in the Rochester area. He was a self employed truck driver and member of Local #92 of Canton. Including his parents, he is survived by wife, Vicky Lynn (Martin) Pitts of the residence; two daughters, Miss Danette Rae Pitts of Minerva, OH, Mrs. Jeffrey (Tammy Leigh) Shuman of Carrollton, OH; one son, James Erin (Jill) Pitts of Minerva, OH; two granddaughters, Megan and Madison Pitts of Minerva; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Geneva) Donaldson of Carrollton; three brothers, Doug (Mary) Pitts of Mechanicstown, Richard (Margie) Pitts of Salem and Larry (Janet) Pitts of Carrollton. Preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Pitts; sister, Jennetta Pitts; and brother, William Pitts. Robert M. Henry
Robert M. Henry, age 76, of 145 Amsterdam Rd., Scio, OH, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 in the Legends Care Center in Massillon following a short illness. He was born on September 14, 1924 in Thornwood, WV. He was the son of the late Arthur and Bessie Lou (Starks) Henry. He lived most of his life in Perrysville. Robert retired from Kopp Clay in Malvern in December 1987. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from September 1944 to June of 1946. Survivors include his daughter, Tamara Bryan of Carrollton; grandchildren, Michael Bryan, Neil and Angela McLean; his son, Robert A. Henry and wife Kay; grandchildren, Steven and Caitlin of Lakeland, FL; a sister, Virginia Miller of Perrysville; brothers, Keith Henry of Perrysville, Jim Henry of Carrollton, and David Henry of Perrysville. Memorial services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Allmon-Dugger Hively Funeral Home in Carrollton with Rev. Tom Dawson officiating. Friends and relatives will be received at the funeral home from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday. The body was cremated and burial will follow in Perrysville Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the VFW, DAV and the American Legion. Russell B. Frank
Russell B. Frank, age 72, of Jackson Township, died Tuesday in the home after a courageous three year battle with cancer. His parents were the late Leo and Edna Boron Frank. He lived his entire life on the farm which had previously been owned and farmed by his father and grandfather. Farming was his passion, having been in the Dairy Business in his younger years, and more recently had a beef and grain operation. He was also employed for 19 years at the Kent State University Stark Branch, retiring in 1986 as Building and Grounds Superintendent. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, with a gentle spirit and a true love of God and his Catholic Faith. Russell and his wife enjoyed 25 years of Western Square Dancing in the area. He was a charter member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Eugenia (Genie) Gill Frank; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Les Moor, and Melissa and Bradley Metzger, all of Jackson Township; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Judith Frank of Dalton, OH; six grandchildren, Johnathan and Heather Moor, Jordan and Megan Metzger and Brian and Sarah Frank; a sister, Catherine Werner of Jackson Township; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Wilma Frank of Jackson Township, Leo and Wilma Frank and Donald and Elizabeth Frank all of Lawrence Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church with Fr. Leo Wehrlin as celebrant. Entombment will be in the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Ruth Mary Pignotti, age 70, of Malvern, died Thursday afternoon following a short illness. Born in Carroll County, Aug. 1, 1930, to the late D. L. Berry and Beulah (Hood) Berry, who resides in Canton. Member of Mohawk Trail Garden Club and Minerva Mother of Twins. She attended the First Christian Church of Minerva. Survivors include her husband, Albert Pignotti of the home; her mother, Beulah Berry of Canton; son, Tom (Cindie) Pignotti of Malvern; daughter, Marcia (Mike) Kidder of Tucson, AZ; son, Ken (Kathy) Pignotti of Amherst, OH; daughter, Kathi (Alex) Rocovitz of Palm Dessert, CA; brother, Samuel Berry of Delroy, OH; sister, Donna Studer of Canton, OH; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Preceded in death by father, D. L. Berry and brother, David Berry.
