Eugene N. Bittner
Eugene N. Bittner, 64, of Ashland, with relatives in Sheffield Lake, died March 27 at Kings Daughters Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born in Akron, he served in the U.S. Army and lived in Ashland for several years.
He retired from General Motors and was a former employee of the Cleveland Electrical Illuminating Company. After moving to Ashland, he was self-employed as a carpenter and remodeled homes.
Mr. Bittner was a member of Ashland Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witness.
Survivors include his wife, Constance “Connie” (nee Ambrose); son, John of Columbia Station; daughters Elaine Ughrin of Sheffield Lake, Laurie Madden of Flat Rock, N.C., and Desiree Pierce of Valley City; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; his mother, Marjorie Beal Bittner of Berea; and brothers Mike of Brook Park and Charles of Cleveland.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Bittner.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. April 13 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 24000 Royalton, Columbia Station.
Edith F. Gauchat
Edith F. Gauchat (nee Barnes), 77, of North Ridgeville died Thursday at St. Augustine Manor in Cleveland following a short illness.
Born in Cleveland, she lived there for most of her life and had been a resident of North Ridgeville for the past seven years, moving from Lakewood. She had also lived in Las Vegas and Glendale, Calif.
She enjoyed playing bingo, watching soap operas and collecting beanie babies.
Survivors include daughters Susan Adair of Canyon Country, Calif., Karen Spencer of Elyria, Donna Chapon of Cleveland and Anita Naulty of Brook Park; sons Dennis Penny of Georgia, Gerard Jr. "Pete" of California, Ronald of Marysville, Ohio, and Donald of Las Vegas; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother Thomas Barnes of Cleveland; and a sister, Dorothy Inverso of Glendale, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard "Jerry"; parents Charles and Florence Barnes; sons Michael and David; and brothers Glen P. Barnes and Leon DeFrame.
Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. Saturday until the time of services at 5:30 p.m. in the David Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville.
The Rev. Joe Romanski, Chaplain of St. Augustine Manor, Cleveland will be the celebrant.

Jon P. Garrett
Jon P. Garrett, 51, of Wellington died Tuesday at Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin after suffering a heart attack.
He was born and raised in Elyria. Mr. Garrett was a Wellington resident for the past 17 years after relocating from Amherst, where he had lived for seven years.
He was a graduate of Elyria High School and attended Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., where he received a bachelor's degree.
Mr. Garrett spent three years in the United States Peace Corps as a teacher, serving in Uganda and Malaysia.
He was employed as a designer with General Electric in Oberlin for 13 years and as a lead designer for NASA Plumbrook Station in Sandusky for 11 years.
He was a volunteer for the Lorain County Sheriff's Department, serving as an auxiliary deputy sheriff for the past 18 years.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Joanne (nee Milne), whom he married in Panang, Malaysia, while they were in the Peace Corps; a daughter, Jennifer Garrett of Wellington; a son, Kenneth of Wellington; a granddaughter; his mother, Ruth (nee Kaiser) Garrett Baker of Portsmouth, Ohio; brothers Richard of Peoria, Ill., and David of Marietta, Ga.; and four nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Garrett, in 1963.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and 1:30 p.m. until the services at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home at Chestnut Ridge Road and state Route 57 in Elyria.
The Rev. Janet Long, pastor of Washington Avenue Christian Church, will officiate.
Burial will take place at a later date.

Joseph Mahilo
Joseph Mahilo, 89, of Vermilion died Monday at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Cleveland, he lived in Vermilion since 1960.
He was employed by U.S. Steel in Lorain as a welder and retired in 1975 after 38 years of service. He also was a farmer.
Mr. Mahilo was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion.
He also was a member of Vermilion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7576 and Vermilion AMVETS Post 22.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and tending his orchard.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Goldie (nee Hodovan); a son, Donald of Vermilion; a daughter, Goldie Ann Burrer of Elyria; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters Mary Walchko of Lorain and Ann Maurer of Elyria; and brothers William of Elyria and Harry of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katherine (nee Dudush), and brothers John and Alex.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St. in Vermilion, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Prayers will be said at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St. in Vermilion.
The Rev. Steve Blum will be the celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military graveside services.

Jones services
Services for Elizabeth Geraldine "Libby" Jones, 69, of Lorain will be at 2 p.m. today at the Salvation Army, 2056 Broadway, Lorain, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services.
Maj. Robert Thomas and Maj. Doris Thomas will officiate. Mrs. Jones died Wednesday at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a long illness.
Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
Born in Amherst, she lived most of her life in Lorain.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Salvation Army in Lorain and the Salvation Army's Home League Ladies.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, listening to music and babysitting.
Survivors include sons Randy, Dewey, Robert, Brian, Stephen and Gerald, all of Lorain; daughters Annie Alves and Cheryl Sanchez, both of Lorain; stepsons Jeff Jones of Michigan and Michael Jones of Florida; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Ross of Lorain; and a sister, Betty Hefley of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert, in 1981; her parents, Stephen D. and Annie L. (nee Crumpston) Ross; and a brother, Stephen D. Ross.

Victoria Caroline Bodnar
Victoria Caroline Bodnar (nee Warashis), 90, of Amherst died Monday at Amherst Nursing Home after a long illness.
Born in Pittsburgh, she was raised there and moved to Lorain, with her family, as a teen-ager. She moved to Amherst in 1949.
She was employed at the GM Plant in Elyria as an inspector for 20 years before retiring in 1969.
Mrs. Bodnar enjoyed knitting, instant games and bingo and was very fond of animals.
Survivors include her sons Joseph Szabo of Amherst and Michael Szabo of Eddington, Alberta, Canada; stepsons Jack Bodnar and Bob Bodnar; stepdaughters Darla Trepoy and Judy Koski; eight grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 26 years, Joseph C. Szabo, in 1956; her second husband of 25 years, Joseph Bodnar, in 1973; her parents Karol and Adela (nee Herman) Warashis; a brother, Alex Warashis; and a sister, Helen Flora.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland St., Amherst.
The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
Virginia M. Dobis
Virginia M. Dobis (nee Klukovich), 77, a lifelong resident of Lorain died Tuesday at Oak Hills Nursing Center in Lorain after a long illness.
During World War II, she worked at the Steel Stamping Co. in Lorain.
Mrs. Dobis was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain.
She enjoyed listening to music, dancing to polkas and reading the newspaper.
Survivors include sons William E. of Lorain and Joseph C. of Galipolis Ferry, W.Va.; daughters Marcia E. Stahl and Kathleen M., both of Lorain; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a stepbrother, Edward Klukovich of Elyria; a sister, Lucille Jessel of Lorain; and a longtime companion, Steve Balla of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Joseph, in 1968; a grandson, Kenneth Dobis; her parents, Vincent and Anna (nee Stanislawski) Klukovich; a brother, Adelbert Charles, in 1990; and a sister, Florence Longwell, in 1998.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.
A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 2702 Elyria Ave., Lorain.

Gloria Crowell
Gloria Crowell, 56, of Riverside, Calif., died Aug. 4 in Riverside Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in North Tonawanda, N.Y., she had lived in Riverside for the past 15 years.
She was an administrative assistant at Aero-space and IT Corp. in Irvine, Calif., retiring in 1983.
Mrs. Crowell received a bachelor's degree in English literature from California State Dominguez Hills in 1986, where she graduated summa cum laude.
She was a member of the Bichon Frise Club of America and was a widely known handler and breeder of champion Bichon Frise dogs.
She enjoyed collecting and selling antiques.
Survivors include her sister, Beverly Ann Warrenfeltz of Riverside, Calif.; a niece, Deborah Warrenfeltz and a nephew, James Warrenfeltz both of Torrance, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Florence Reinhard, who owned and operated the Wishbone Restaurant in Oberlin from 1948 to 1968.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
The Rev. David Gross of St. Peter United Church of Christ will officiate.
