Gary Dean Thomas

Gary Dean Thomas, 55, of North Richland Hills, Texas, and formerly of New London, died Monday in Kentucky in an automobile accident.

Born in New London, he lived in Shelby, Ohio, for several years and had resided in the Fort Worth, Texas, area for the past 20 years.

He was a 1966 graduate of New London High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970.

Mr. Thomas was self-employed as an auto technician and specialized in Corvettes and muscle cars. He raced a 1968 Camaro called the “Widow Maker” at Norwalk Raceway Park in the mid-1970s, and he also raced at Mansfield Motor Sports Speedway.

Survivors include a daughter, April Howard; and a son, Gary Thomas Jr,. both of Shelby; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; his mother, Louise Thomas of New London; and a sister, Karen Nebergall of Bailey Lakes, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father, William R. Thomas, in 1992.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main St., New London, where funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday.

The Rev. Reuben Dunckel, pastor of the New London Alliance Church, will officiate.

Burial with military rites will be in Grove Street Cemetery in New London.

Bacil H. O’Neal Sr.

Bacil H. O’Neal Sr., 83, of Lorain died Friday at Autumn Aegis Retirement Center after a long illness.

Born in Mount Savage, Md., he moved from Maryland to Lorain in 1949.

He served as a tank driver in the Army during World War II, serving with Company B of the Eighth Tank Battalion - Fourth Armored Division under General George S. Patton in Europe. He became a sergeant and saw action in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge.

He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was a clerk in the shipping department at U.S. Steel Lorain Works for 33 years before retiring in 1982.

Mr. O’Neal was a member of United Steelworkers Local 1104 and the VFW in Mount Savage.

He enjoyed hunting and camping.

Survivors include daughters Carol Lee Hensley and Susan Ralich, both of Lorain, Debbie Hall of Sullivan and Patty Wiseman of Cumberland, Md.; sons Robert F. of Water Valley, Ky., James D. of Lorain and Bacil H. Jr. of Sullivan; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret E. (nee Lilly), in 1998; granddaughters Lanette Hall, in 1995 and Kim Godles, earlier this year; his parents, Clarence A. Sr. and Susie (nee Skipper) O’Neal; brothers John, James and Clarence Jr.; and a sister, Zola “Teab” Shriner.

Friends may call 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, where services will be noon Tuesday.

The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain, will officiate.

Burial will be in Beckly Cemetery in Rochester Township. The Rev. Steve Carmany will preside over committal rites.

George C. Ach

George C. Ach, 76, of Elyria, died Sunday at Elyria Regional Medical Center following a short illness.

Born in Cleveland, he had lived in Elyria the last 20 years, moving from Pittsburgh.

Mr. Ach served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a graduate of Ohio University.

He worked in sales for Tenk Machine in Cleveland.

He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1079, Elyria, Elyria Moose Lodge and Spring Valley Country Club.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, crossword puzzles, traveling and spending time with his children.

Survivors include his companion of 20 years, Mary Ellen Flowers; daughters Joanne Nadalin of Evergreen, Colo., and Kathy Bellino of Pittsburgh; stepsons Jim Flowers of Omaha, Neb., Tim Flowers of North Ridgeville and Kelly Flowers of Sheffield; and seven grandchildren.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home, Chestnut Ridge Road and state Route 57, Elyria.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Judge Catholic Church, 590 Poplar St., Elyria.

The Rev. Edward J. Smith, associate pastor, will be the celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Building Fund, 590 Poplar St., Elyria 44035.

Sister Kathleen Barnes

Sister Kathleen Barnes, formerly Sister M. Joachim, 67, of Columbia, S.C., and formerly of Elyria, died Thursday in Columbia.

She served with the Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals since 1953. She retired in 2002.

Born in Elyria, she entered the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine from St. Mary’s Parish in Elyria in 1953.

A sister of Charity of St. Augustine for 50 years, she professed her first vows in 1956 and her final vows in 1959.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Timken Mercy Medical Center in Canton, earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Ursuline College in Cleveland and earned an associate degree in health information management at Midlands Tech in Columbia, S.C.

She ministered as an assistant in cottages at Parmadale and was director of the hospital cottage and clinic there. She also was a driver and worked in the infirmary with the sisters at Mount Augustine. She was a staff nurse at St. Augustine Manor and St. John Hospital in Cleveland, where she also helped the homebound and the sick and poor in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhoods.

While in South Carolina, she was a staff nurse at Providence Hospital and a medical records technician at both the downtown campus and Providence Northwest hospitals in Columbia.

Her volunteer activities included working with P.A.L.S., an organization that supports HIV-positive people.

Survivors include a sister, Winifred Beckloff of North Ridgeville; a brother, James of Lorain; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Rita and Genevieve, and her brothers John and Charles.

The funeral liturgy was Monday at Mount Augustine in Cleveland.

Burial will be 9:30 a.m. today at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland. Family and friends will meet at the Miles Avenue entrance.

McGorray Brothers Funeral Home, Westlake, handled arrangements.

Brady services

Services for Margaret E. “Peg” Brady, 80, of North Ridgeville, will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at David Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville.

The Rev. Robert Schroyer, associate pastor of Church of the Open Door, Elyria, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Brady died Sunday at North Ridge Health Center, North Ridgeville.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Eleanor Carroll Crist

Eleanor Carroll Crist, 64, of Clarendon, Pa., and formerly of Elyria, died Monday at EMH Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Born in Nitro, W.Va., she lived in Lorain County most of her life before moving to Pennsylvania in 1987.

She worked at Dairy Pak in Olmsted Falls at one time, and retired from the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Pennsylvania in 2002 as a waitress.

She also was a member of Moose Lodge of Elyria.

Mrs. Crist enjoyed playing bingo and traveling to Las Vegas.

Survivors include daughters Randi Rose of Grafton, Cindy Schuh of Cincinnati and Sandra Youngblood of Elyria; stepsons Tony Mihalis of Martinsville, Ind., and Michael Crist of Florida; a stepdaughter, Vicki Crist of Columbia Station; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick, in 1993; her parents, Arville and Helena Thompson; and a sister, Gloria Hammond.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Blackburn Funeral Home, 1021 Main St., Grafton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Resthaven Memory Garden, Avon.

The Rev. Chuck Mentrup will officiate.

Entombment to follow at Resthaven.

Lois C. Dial

Lois C. Dial, 78, of Elyria, died Thursday at her home.

Born in Cleveland, she graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland.

She worked at Brunswick Post Office, Brunswick.

Survivors include sons John W. Wildhaber of Hayden, Idaho and Robert C. Wildhaber of Grafton; daughters Barbara L. Borbas of Elyria and Terry E. Brenning of Nova; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Dork of Lebanon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Margaret A. “Peggy” Bolling; and a brother, William Peist.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.

The Rev. Michael Manosky, pastor of Sugar Ridge Baptist Church, North Ridgeville, will officiate.

Dicken Funeral Home, Elyria, is handling arrangements.
