Emma Louise Hitzel
NORTH KINGSVILLE - Emma Louise Hitzel, 81, of East Center Street, North Kingsville, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.
Born on October 21, 1921, in Easton, PA, she was the daughter of Ernest and Bertha Snyder. Mrs. Hitzel lived in North Kingsville for the last 4 years, coming from Ft. Myers, FL.
Mrs. Hitzel married Charles F. Hitzel III in 1945. She was retired after working many years at Lake Erie College, in dietary services.
She enjoyed swimming at the YMCA and was presented a plaque honoring her for swimming over 1, 000 miles. She also enjoyed bicycling, crocheting, and sewing.
Survivors include a son, Charles F. Hitzel IV of North Kingsville; a daughter, Charlene Robinette of Piqua, OH; two sisters, Johanna Strouse of Bristol, PA, and Beatrice Radosin of Doylestown, PA; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband; and a son, Ernest Sharpe.
At the request of the family, no visitation hours will be held. A private memorial service will be held at a later time. Burial will be in South Easton Cemetery, Easton, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Ashtabula or North Kingsville Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Sam H. Ball
CHERRY VALLEY TOWNSHIP - Sam H. Ball, 83, of 4890 Hayes Road, Cherry Valley Township, OH, died on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at his residence.
Born on January 15, 1920, in Council, VA, he was the son of Matthew P. and Bessie (Perkins) Ball. Mr. Ball has lived in Cherry Valley Township since 1957; he was formerly of Princeton, WV, and Cleveland, OH.
Mr. Ball served in the U.S. Army as an infantry soldier during World War II in the European Theater, having received a Purple Heart. He worked for the former River Terminal Railway, currently LTV Steel, in Cleveland, as a conductor for 30 years, retiring in 1981.
He attended the Cherry Valley Church of the Nazarene, the Conneaut Church of God, and was a member of the Jefferson VFW Post #3334. Mr. Ball enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Laura A. (Bridgeman) Ball of Cherry Valley Township, whom he married on June 26, 1940; three daughters, Linda J. York of Kingsville, Christine M. Fraser of Rockford, MI, and Phyllis J. Ritchie of Ashtabula; eight sons, Roger H. Ball, Ralph A. Ball, and Johnny R. Ball, all of Jefferson, Charles C. Ball of Princeton, WV, Donald R. Ball of Linesville, PA, Marvin D. Ball of Dorset, and James D. Ball and Allen H. Ball, both of Cherry Valley Township; three sisters, Eva Porterfield of Greensboro, NC, and Erdie Lambert and Stella Beckner, both of Princeton, WV; one brother, Loay Ball of Princeton, WV; 43 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Joe E. and Jerry D. Ball; three brothers, Earl, Harvey, and Howard Ball; and one sister, Eula Ball.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at BAUMGARDNER FUNERAL HOME, 134 Prospect Street, Andover, OH, with Rev. Raymond Lamb of the Conneaut Church of God, and Rev. Duane E. Ball of the Harvest International Church in Saybrook, OH, officiating. Burial will follow in Cherry Valley Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, August 2, 2003, at the funeral home.

Joseph F. Mirch
KINGSVILLE - Joseph Frank Mirch, 77, of Ashtabula, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the Ashtabula County Rehabilitation Center.
Born February 24, 1926 in Fairport Harbor, he was the son of Joseph and Mary (Bertich) Mirch, and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1970, moving from Painesville.
Prior to his retirement from the A&B Dock, he worked as a machinist for Diamond Alkaline. A veteran of the U.S. Army Corps and the Air Force, he served during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of Mother of Sorrows Church and the Knights of Columbus, he enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, cars, and spending time with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Agnes (Surbella) Mirch, whom he married on May 20, 1947; five children, Linda Nemeth, Mary Pierce, Joanne Mirch, and James Mirch, all of Ashtabula, and Joseph Mirch of Rock Hill, SC; seven grandchildren, Michael, Debbie, and Matthew Nemeth, Amy and Kevin Pierce, and Joshua and Jacob Mirch; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hornyak of Ashtabula; and one brother, John Mirch of MI.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Victoria Lynn Nemeth, and Melanie Pierce; two sisters, Margaret Mirch in infancy, and Betty Merkosky; and his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Mother of Sorrows Church, 1464 West 6th Street, Ashtabula. Rev. Fr. Kevin Peters, Pastor, will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Zaback-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula.

Edward J. Kendzerski
ASHTABULA - Edward J. "Eddie Joe" Kendzerski, 52 of Rock Creek, died Friday, May 30, 2003, in the Hospice Unit, at Ashtabula County Medical Center, after a four month battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born on August 1, 1950 in Ashtabula and is survived by his parents, Edman and Lois (Bebout) Kendzerski of Rock Creek. A son, Michael (Rebecca) Kendzerski of Andover; three daughters, Carol Ann (Marty) Nelson of Andover, Carly (David) Harrington of Crockett, TX, and Cody Kendzerski of Crockett, TX; five grandchildren; four brothers, Ralph, Robert, Ronald, and Donald; and two sisters, Linda Stowers, and Mary Lou Boczar.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 3119 West Water Street, Rock Creek, with Rev. A. K. Graff as celebrant. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Rock Creek.
Friends will be received between 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003, at the funeral home.
Memorial donations are requested to the Hospice Unit at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Mary E. Augustine
ASHTABULA - Mary Elizabeth Augustine, 72, died Monday, March 31, 2003, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born May 8, 1930, in Ashtabula, the daughter of William and Katherine (Miller) Murphy.
For more than 30 years, she was employed by Ohio Bell, AT&T and Alltel.
She enjoyed traveling and reading.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; two daughters, Terry Gowday of Ashtabula, and Sandi Mathis of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Eric Gowday, Brian Gowday, Lisa Mathis and Shawna Mathis; and a sister, Joann Smith of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Private funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.

Lena L. Hayes
ASHTABULA - Lena L. Hayes, 100, of Lake Avenue, died Friday, March, 28, 2003, at Silver Sands in Ashtabula.
She was born May 28, 1902, in Scranton, Pa., the daughter of Israel and Miriam C. (Rubel) Moskowitz.
She was a teacher at public schools in Pennsylvania and was a bookkeeper.
Mrs. Hayes was a member of Tefereth Israel Synagogue in Ashtabula. She also was a member of the Senior Center of Ashtabula.
Survivors include her two grandchildren, Scott Dinner of Scranton, Pa., and Candi Brodsky of Ashtabula; and four great-grandchildren, Mandi, Stephen, Sara and Samuel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marty Hayes; a son, Israel Dinner, in 1984; three brothers, Newcomb, Ike and Harry Moskowitz; and six sisters, Sarah Druck, Lillian Harris, Rose Reich, Hannah Meyer, Esther Brandwene and Florence Hollander.
Graveside service is 11 a.m. Friday at Montefiore Cemetery in Philadelphia. Rabbi Harold Waintrut will officiate.

David L. Maurer
NORTH KINGSVILLE - David L. Maurer, 56, of North Kingsville, died Sunday afternoon, March 30, 2003, at University Hospital in Cleveland, after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 27, 1946, in Conneaut, the son of Don W. and Jean B. (Bashioum) Maurer.
A 1964 graduate of the former Rowe High School, he also graduated from Erie Business Center and Kent State University.
He served in the U.S. Air Force between 1968 and 1972, and was in Thailand from 1970 to 1971. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of staff sergeant and received the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Following his discharge from the Air Force, he was employed as treasurer at Conneaut Savings and Loan. He then served as director of financial services at Brown Memorial Hospital for 12 years before becoming treasurer for the Conneaut Area City School System.
He was a member of the Conneaut First Assembly of God, where he served as board member and treasurer for 28 years. He was also the church's sound man, Sunday school teacher, bus driver, and was a Royal Ranger leader.
He was treasurer of the Conneaut Community Foundation and was a member of the Ashtabula Kent State Scholarship Committee.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and also enjoyed church, old cars and the Ohio State University's Buckeye sport teams.
Survivors include his mother, of Conneaut; his wife, the former Sue Henry, whom he married Aug. 21, 1971; two sons, David L. Maurer II of Marysville, and Matthew S. Maurer of North Royalton; two granddaughters, Hannah L. Maurer and Abigail L. Maurer; and a sister, Joi Cunningham of Strongsville.
He was preceded in death by his father, on May 19, 2002; and his grandparents.
Service is 1 p.m. Friday at the Conneaut First Assembly of God, 389 W. Main Road, Conneaut. The Rev. Don Matthews will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Jeff Maurer of Family Fellowship Foursquare Gospel Church. Burial with full military honors will be held at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church, and then noon Friday until the time of service at the church.
