Joseph W. Millard
ASHTABULA - Joseph W. Millard, 72, E. 40th Street, died Saturday May 5, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center of cancer.
He was born Nov. 2, 1928, in Hartsgrove, a son of William A. and Anna L. (Ferron) Millard, and was a lifelong area resident, mostly in Jefferson.
Mr. Millard was a U.S. Army veteran.
He worked as a truckdriver and retired from Mobil Chemical Corp. in 1991, after being employed there for 20 years.
Mr. Millard was a member of Teamster Locals 377 and 407, the Jefferson Eagles Aerie Lodge 3881, the Ashtabula Moose Lodge, and B.P.O.E. in San Benito, Texas. He enjoyed camping, cooking, reading and watching westerns.
Survivors include two sons, William L. Millard of Jefferson and Bart A. Millard of Ashtabula; two daughters, Deborah L. Michalosky of Mechaniesville, Va., and Becky J. Fowler of Ashland, Va.; six grandchildren, Eric and Chad Millard, Brianna and Ashley Michalosky, and Morgan and Benjamin Fowler; one brother, Donald Millard of Corona, Calif., and a sister, Theresa Armstrong of Melbourne, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
No services will be held at this time. Cremation will take place following calling hours at the Family Care Group Cremation Center.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Walter Keaton
ASHTABULA - Walter Keaton, 71, of Kain Avenue, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at University Hospitals, Cleveland.
He was born May 29, 1930, in Tannery, Ky., to Ervin and Lonie (Cooper) Keaton and had been Ashtabula resident for more than 50 years.
He married Sylvia Lambert on Jan. 15, 1954, in Jefferson.
Mr. Keaton worked for New York Central Railroad for more than 16 years and retired from Rockwell Plastic Co., Ashtabula.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing, hunting and outdoor activities, as well as socializing with family and friends.
He was a member of Church of the Living God, Ashtabula.
Survivors include wife; a son, David of Ashtabula; a daughter, Lydia Nejbauer of Ashtabula; brothers Ray of Covington, Va., and Clyde of Maysville, Ky.; sister Elma Lewis of Dycusburg, Ky.; and grandchildren, Angela Keaton of Ashtabula and Jeanette Keaton of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Tina Marie; three brothers; and four sisters.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Potti Lakeside Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Robert Falke of the Church of the Living God, Ashtabula. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery, Ashtabula Township.
Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Kaleb J. Ball
ASHTABULA - Kaleb James Ball, the infant son of Joshua Ball and Rebecca Marsch, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Survivors include his parents; maternal grandparents Edward Marsch of Rock Creek and Tammy and Larry Suplinski of Ashtabula; maternal great-grandparents Donald Leers of Ashtabula, Laverne Marsch of Andover, Susan Suplinski of Ashtabula, and Larry Suplinski, Sr., of Ashtabula; paternal grandparents, Joe and Karleen Ball of Ashtabula; paternal great-grandparents, Ray and Cathy Ball and John and Claudia Tackett, all of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother, Connie Leers; maternal great-grandfather, Edward Marsch and paternal great-grandmother, Vina Ball.
A private service was held Sunday at the Morgan Union Cemetery Chapel in Rock Creek. Burial was in Morgan Union Cemetery in Rock Creek.

Herbert Gill
ASHTABULA - Herbert Sherman Gill, 85, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at his son's home in College Grove, Tenn.
He was born in Ashtabula, the son of William C. and Lena Shipbaugh Gill.
He was a retired railroad conductor with Conrail. He attended Bethany Lutheran Church in Ashtabula and Lutheran Church in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Survivors include two sons, David of College Grove, and Kevin of Massillon; three grandchildren, Maggie and Chris Gill of College Grove, Tenn., and Steven Gill of Orrville.; and special friend, Terri Huebner of Ormond Beach, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elli.
Memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Ave., Ashtabula. A gathering will follow in the church fellowship hall. Inurnment will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

Jerry L. Messenger
ASHTABULA - Jerry L. Messenger, 58, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, in his residence.
Mr. Messenger was born Oct. 4, 1943 in Kingwood, W.Va., the son of Vance and Opal (Turner) Messenger.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He worked for 30 years as a polyline operator for the Morton Salt Co. and retired in 1998.
Mr. Messenger enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Debbie (Yuse), whom he married on Jan. 31, 1994; two sons, Derek of Ashtabula and Jerry M. of Bowden, W.Va.; daughter, Sandy Cowger of Madison; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Connie (Wiles), in 1989 and his second wife, Suzanne (Blood), in 1992.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zaback-Czup Funeral Home, 500 Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Raymond S. Smith Sr.
ASHTABULA - Raymond S. Smith Sr., 85, formerly of Niles, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Parkhaven Nursing Home in Ashtabula.
He was born July 11, 1917, in Niles, the son of David and Elizabeth Jones Smith.
Mr. Smith was a 1935 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and was employed at Reactive Metals Inc. as a cost accountant for 47 years, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Smith married Angelyn Marra on November 1, 1941.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Niles, Niles City Park and School Board, Niles YMCA, and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II as a Technical Sergeant.
He enjoyed bowling and golf.
Survivors include one son, Raymond (Skeeter) Smith Jr. of McDonald, Ohio; two daughters, Carla Hague of Ashtabula and Stephney Manter of Mobile, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Angelyn, in 1999; and two brothers, Kenneth and Ralph Smith.
Mass of Christian Burial is 9:30 a.m. Friday at Mount Carmel Church in Niles, preceded by a 9 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Niles City Cemetery.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph Rossi Funeral Home in Niles, where the Mount Carmel Bereavement Society will conduct prayers at 7:30 p.m.
Earl V. Capitena
ASHTABULA - Earl V. Capitena, 73, of Ashtabula, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Nov. 29, 1928, in Ashtabula, he was the son of Paige and Carmel (Altomare) Capitena.
An Ashtabula High School graduate, he retired from Conrail in 1988 as an electrician.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Knights of Columbus Council 360, B.P.O.E. Ashtabula Lodge 208, Hickory Grove Golf Club and the East Ashtabula Club.
Mr. Capitena enjoyed his church, his family - especially his grandchildren - golfing, bowling and being a spectator at area sporting events.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Anne (Peterangelo); two sons, Gary of Ashtabula, and Ronald of Boca Raton, Fla.; a daughter, Cheryl Johnson of Ashtabula; six grandchildren, Chad Johnson, Kristen Capitena, Amy Capitena, Jenna Capitena, Cara Capitena and Mallory Johnson; two sisters, Louise Noce of Ashtabula, and Helen Stenback of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Capp.
Service is 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Guerriero Funeral Home, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula.
Members of the Ashtabula Elks will meet at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home for a memorial service.
