Stella M. Battles
ASHTABULA – Stella Marie Battles, 64, of East 23rd Street died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Cleveland Clinic surrounded by her family's love.
She was born February 19, 1945 in Lakewood, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Niznik) Dubovec and had been a lifelong area resident.
Stella worked in the meat department for various area grocery stores including Krogers and Loblaws.
A member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, she was a talented seamstress making many outfits for her kids and grandkids over the years. She also enjoyed polkas, Elvis and Jeff Gordon, enjoyed riding their motorcycle, cooking, crocheting, embroidery, making dolls, traveling, gardening, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
Her survivors include her husband of 43 years, Tim Battles, whom she married May 7, 1966; three daughters, Michelle (Shawn) Hall of Windsor and Suzy (Randy) Richards and Tami (Daniel) Hazen, both of Saybrook Twp.; her mother, Mary Tenjido of Kelloggsville; six grandchildren, Jonathan and Andrew Hall, Tim Wilson, Emily and Rylee Richards, and Kaylee Hazen; two sisters, Louise (Sam) Bucci of Ashtabula and Fran (Roth) Warner of Kelloggsville; one brother, Rudy (Trish) Dubovec of Florida; and her half-brother-in-law, Kenneth (Linda) Manes.
She was preceded in death by one grandchild, Marky Murzynski; and her father, Frank Dubovec.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, August 7, 2009 at the Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 PM Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 1200 E. 21st Street, Ashtabula. Fr. Thomas Eisweirth of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Salem, OH will preside. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, N. Kingsville.

Kathy L. Kelly
ASHTABULA – Kathy Lou Kelly, 55, of Fargo Drive died Sunday, August 9, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 15, 1954 in Geneva, the daughter of Andrew and Helen (Reynolds) Anslow and had been an area resident for most of her life.
A Jefferson High School graduate, she later earned a two-year certificate for both cosmetology and truck driving as well as receiving her CDL before being employed as a truck driver.
A member of Central Missionary Baptist Church in Jefferson, OH, she was also a member of Grace and Truth World Outreach Ministry in Harvest, AL where she resided for six years. She believed that faith and family were the two most important things in life and devoted all of her time to her family. She was a very strong and independent woman and never hesitated to give to others.
She is survived by her children, Christina (Renee) Madison, Aleasha Ashford (Justin Krenisky), Jacquelyn Ashford (Lee Wells), and LaVeander Ashford all of Ashtabula, and Rasheeda Wynn and William Ashford III (Tejas Tavernie) both of Hunstville, AL; grandchildren, Cincere Whitted, Jasmine Krenisky, Jaselle Krenisky, and Harmoni Wells, all of Ashtabula, and Tavaris Wynn of Huntsville, AL; sisters, Bonnie (Larry) Pratt of Ashtabula and Jane Thomas of Dorset; brother, Lyle (Bernice) Anslow of Dorset; special nieces and nephews, Jamie Robertson, LaTessa “TC” Pratt, Larry Lee Pratt, and Anthony Pratt; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn Anslow and John Arbuckle; and her parents.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. No calling hours will be observed.

Gerald Brown
ASHTABULA - Calling hours for Gerald Brown of Ashtabula will be 7 to 9 p.m. today and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
Service at the funeral home will be 11 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be at Ridgeview Cemetery.
He died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
David R. Shank Sr.
ASHTABULA - David R. Shank Sr., 71, of Conneaut, OH, died Saturday afternoon, June 7, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula, OH. He was born June 17, 1931, in Milroy, PA, a son of Oliver and Florence (Baker) Shank.
A Conneaut resident for the past 31 years, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed as plant manager at the former Plycraft, retiring in 1995. He was a former member of the Elks Club, was an avid hunter and enjoyed auto racing. His passion was working on his farm.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma (Bartlett) Shank, whom he married Sept. 8, 1949; two sons, David R. Jr., of North Kingsville, OH, and Timothy S. of Conneaut, OH; four grandchildren, D.R. Shank, Stacie Shank, Scott Shank and Julie Shank; two great-grandchildren, Quinn L. Rudler and Tanner Ray Shank. Also surviving are five sisters, Alda Wilson and Donna Brinner, both of Phoenix, AZ, Ruth Hoar, Jane Glass and Irma Nale, all of Milroy, PA; and his brother, Kenneth Shank of Milroy, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Kenneth and Mark; and three brothers, Glen, Marlin and Alvin Shank.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev. Dr. Clyde A. McGee, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Elizabeth Takacs
ASHTABULA - Elizabeth Takacs, 90, of North Bend Road, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born on June 22, 1912, in Budapest, Hungary, the daughter of Julius and Elizabeth Badar, and had been an area resident for most of her life.
Mrs. Takacs was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Christ. She enjoyed ceramics, crocheting and cooking. She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.
Survivors include her five children, Delores Reed of Thornton, Colo., Violet Kalil of Ashtabula, Kenneth Takacs of Geneva, and Ruth Rebera and Donald Takacs, both of Ashtabula; two sisters, Irene Bertholf of North Kingsville, and Helen Sollie of Canton; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Takacs; one brother, Julius Bader; and her parents.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Ducro Funeral Services Jefferson Home, 17 N. Market St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Jim Onion, pastor's assistant of Second Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial will be at Edgewood Cemetery.
Calling hour is one hour prior to the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

George C. Sweeney
ASHTABULA - George C. Sweeney, 45, of East 15th Street, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his home.
He was born Jan. 21, 1957, in Welch, W.Va., the son of George and Jacqueline (Trump) Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney volunteered at State Road Elementary School, was active with his son in Cub Scouts, and enjoyed spending time with his children.
He also enjoyed camping, fishing, model cars, country music and going to yard sales.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Davey), whom he married April 23, 1994; his mother, Jacqueline Perkins of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, Brandon Sweeney of Ashtabula, and David Pochedly of Concord Township; two daughters, Kiffany and Carmen Sweeney of Ashtabula; a stepson, Michael Davey of Ashtabula; two grandchildren, Emmalyne and Peyton Royal; three sisters, Mildred Bennett of High Point, N.C., Lois Painter of Thomasville, N.C., and Crystal Bennett of Fayetteville, N.C.; and a brother, Larry Perkins, also of Fayetteville.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Service is noon Wednesday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Neroy Carter, pastor of the Jesus Only Pentecostal Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Sweeney Family Cemetery, McDowell County, W.Va.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Phillip D. Freeborn
ASHTABULA - Phillip D. Freeborn, 82, of North Ridge East, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at the Cleveland Veterans Hospital.
He was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Akron, the son of Dudley and Bernice (Wilcox) Freeborn, and had been an area resident for most of his life.
Mr. Freeborn worked for Dunn Rubber in Ashtabula, retiring 1970. He also held a barber and hairstyling license.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 943, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Army-Navy Union, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1476, Eagles Aerie 3881 of Jefferson, the Moose Lodge, and the American Legion of Orwell.
He enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include a daughter, Roxanne Sheffield of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren, Steve and Amanda; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald and Al.
Graveside service is noon Friday at Fairview Cemetery, Mesopotamia Township, where the VFW will conduct military rites.
The Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, has charge of the arrangements.
