Leon E. Smith
ASHTABULA – Leon Edson Smith, 93, passed away Monday, January 2, 2012 at DaVita Dialysis.
He was born July 4, 1918, in Ashtabula, the son of the late Clyde and Ida Mae (Stevens) Smith, and was a lifelong are a resident.
After graduating from Ashtabula High School in 1936, Mr. Smith served in the US Army, 3526th Medium Auto Maintenance unit, during WWII. In his 40’s he enjoyed playing softball and was known to his teammates as “Lightning”. He retired from GenCorp in 1981, where he was a lathe operator. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He enjoyed woodworking, fixing things, being a “Jack of all trades”, traveling and watching the Cleveland Indians.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, whom he married May 13, 1944; daughter, Elayne (Kevin Shelott) Smith of Ashtabula; a son, Eugene (Barbara) Smith of Ashtabula; two grandchildren, Stacey (Brian) Bagley of Jefferson and Stephanie (Daniel Meinke) Smith of Ashtabula; three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arnold Smith, Kenneth Smith, and Vernon Smith; sister, Lorene O’Brien; and his parents.
A service will be held 12PM Friday, January 6, 2011 at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave, Ashtabula. Rev. Dr. Stephen Long, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Ashtabula Township with full military honors by American Legion Dewey- Howlett Post #103 honor guard.
Calling hours will be from 11 AM until the time of service.

Ida M. Mendrala
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP - Ida M. Mendrala, 70, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Feb. 10, 1923, in Ashtabula, she was a daughter of Joseph and Rose (Takacs) Monda.
A member of Bethany Lutheran Church, she was a 1949 Ashtabula High School graduate. She was a retired employee of Sears Catalog Department.
She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and her family.
Survivors include her husband, Theodore; three sons, Jeffrey of Chardon and Doug and Greg of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Beverly Foderetti of Ashtabula and Trudy Williams of Medina.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church.

James Young
ASHTABULA - Services for James "B.Y." Young, 62, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ducro Funeral Services - Jefferson Home, 17 Market St., Jefferson.
Calling hour is noon to the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
Young died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Carington Park Nursing Home, Ashtabula.

Roger D. Novak
ASHTABULA - Graveside service for Roger D. Novak, in San Francisco, Calif., who died Nov. 27, 2000, will be noon Friday at Edgewood Cemetery, with the Rev. Stephen Long officiating.
Nicholas Varee
ASHTABULA Nicholas Varee, 72, of 6230 Runkle Ave., died Saturday April 14, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Varee was born in Spring Township, Crawford County, Pa., Nov. 21, 1928, a son of Constantine and Elizabeth (Schaeffer) Varee.
He was a retired employee of Millenium Inorganic Plant 1 of Ashtabula Townshipand also worked at Reactive Metals of Ashtabula Township for 10 years.
Mr. Varee attended St. Joseph Catholic Church of Ashtabula was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed carpentry and traveling.
He is survived by one son, Dennis of Ashtabula; four sisters, Marilyn Westropp of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lori McLaughlin of Conneaut, Madonna Glenn of Fredricksburg, Va., Connie Robbins of Ocala, Fla.; five sisters, Elizabeth Lehman and Barbara Varee of Conneautville, Pa., Marjorie Slubowski of Erie, Katherine Martin of Richmond, Mi. and Maggie Steigerwald of Springboro, Pa.; three brothers, Constantine of Madison Heights, Mich.., John of Springboro, Pa., and Joe of Conneautville and six grandchildren, Nicole, Mary, Stacy, Megan, Nyssa and Nicholas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frank; and two sisters, Frances Penn and Anna Varee.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church of Conneautiville, Pa., at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Robert Fedor of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Conneautville officiating.
Burial will be at Spring Cemetery in Springboro, Pa.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the White -Cod Funeral Home, 1405 Main St., Conneautville.

Eleanor A. Swanson
ASHTABULA - Eleanor A. Swanson, 85, of Lake Avenue, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at her home.
She was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Bobak) Simborski.
She graduated from business college in St. Louis, Mo., and worked as a secretary in New York and a secretary for Railway Express in Lima before moving to Ashtabula. She also worked for Kent State University library at its former Park Avenue location in Ashtabula, and retired from Railway Express in 1950.
She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star, and enjoyed reading.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Lott of Palm Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren: Ricky, Randy, Cindy, Debbie, Dave, Janine and Jeff; a brother, John Samborski; a sister, Theresa Gallagher of Richmond, Va.; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gustaf Swanson, in 1975; a son, Louis Maille; two brothers: Joseph and Henry; and a sister, Helen.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 615 W. Prospect, Ashtabula. The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton will officiate. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Wright
ASHTABULA - Ruby Wright, 91, formerly of Old Wood Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 22, 1909, the daughter of Warren Lee and Maude (Handman) Dodge, and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
Prior to retirement, she served as president in her family business, Dodge Lumber Co.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Elks Ladies Association.
She enjoyed sharing time with family and friends, traveling and playing bridge.
Survivors include three daughters: Barbara Whipple of Jefferson, Donna Brownlee of Burton and Susan Karis of Madison; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Francis Bowdler of Venice, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of nearly 69 years, Donald E. Wright, on July 27, 1996.
Service is 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 4506 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Merideth Coleman, pastor of Jefferson United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Plymouth Township.
There will be no calling hours.
