Philip G. Hakundy
ASHTABULA - Philip Gary Hakundy, 42, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in Sheffield Township.
He was born Jan. 19, 1960, in Ashtabula, the son of Ronald M. and Virginia Arcaro-Hakundy.
He was employed as an electrician and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 673.
Mr. Hakundy enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking, and refinishing furniture. He was an avid collector of war memorabilia and enjoyed playing the guitar. The times he most enjoyed were racing motocross with his son and spending time with family and friends.
He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association, Competition Riders of America, the National Rifle Association, the Ohio Gun Collector's Association, and was a past president of the Amboy Rifle Club.
Survivors include his mother; his wife, Kelly; son Philip Ronald; stepchildren Richard and Angela, all of Jefferson; and a sister, Rhonda Hakundy-Jones of Harrisburg, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Service is 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 6280 S. Main St., North Kingsville, with John Urban officiating.

Esther L. Leonard
ASHTABULA - Esther L. Leonard, 99, formerly of Nathan Avenue, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 22, 1903, in Austinburg Township, the daughter of Ernest J. and Mertilla C. (Cadmas) Green and had been a lifelong Ashtabula County resident.
Mrs. Leonard was a homemaker and a caregiver for several of her relatives. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, and being with her family, especially her children and great-grandchildren.
She was a former member of Austinburg Congregational Church and Messiah Lutheran Church, Ashtabula.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn E. Hanel of Ashtabula; three grandchildren, Jolyn Reams, Elaine Fentiman, and Gary Hanel; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha Langston of Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Erland L. Herren, in 1959; second husband, Donald C. Leonard, in 1985; two sisters, Helen M. Colby, and Mildred B. Friley; and three brothers, Chancey W., John W., and Homer J. Green.
Service is 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Childs and Williams Funeral Home, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. David Hofer of Bethany Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

Betty R. Mixer
ASHTABULA - Betty Rose Mixer, 75, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at her home.
She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for five years and died of complications of lung cancer. A longtime resident of North Bend Road, she had lived there for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Mixer was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Adrian, W.Va., the daughter of Roy and Goldie (Hornbeck) Riffle. On Nov. 27, 1946, she married Homer A. Mixer.
She worked for the Ashtabula Reclamation Plant and for the Dunbar-Hopkins Greenhouse.
She was a past member of Saybrook United Methodist Church and enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy Tyson, Debbie Hamilton, and Connie Newsome, with whom she made her home, all of Ashtabula; a son, Randy of Ashtabula; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katy Snyder of Ashtabula and Sue Gall of Pioneer, Calif.; and a brother, Frank Riffle of Gibsonton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1980; and five brothers, Dale, Jim, Bruce, Howard and Paul Riffle.
Service is 1 p.m. Monday at the Zaback-Czup Funeral Home, 500 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Michael Williams officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
Calling hours are from 11 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Darrin T. Bucher
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP - Darrin T. Bucher, 25, of Runkle Avenue, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in Morgan Township from injuries sustained in an automobile crash.
Born April 24, 1976, in Brooksville, Fla., he was a son of David H. and Janet C. (Grilly) Bucher and lived in Florida before moving to Jefferson in 1989.
He has lived in Ashtabula Township for the past nine months.
Mr. Bucher enjoyed working on cars, music and participating and watching sports.
Survivors include his parents; a brother, David of Middlefield; three sisters, Janet Persichetti of Jefferson, Renee Grover of Sevierville, Tenn., and Lauri Frederick of Andover.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carol and Theodore Grilly and Una and Henry Bucher.
Private burial of ashes will be Monday at the family's convenience.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.
Michael W. Carson
ASHTABULA - Michael W. Carson, 46, of West 43rd Street, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
He was born Sept. 30, 1954, and was raised by his mother and step-father, Louvenia (Roby) and Napoleon Carson. He had been an Ashtabula resident most of his life.
A 1973 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
He worked at the Perry nuclear power plant prior to his illness.
He was a fan of many sports, especially football, and enjoyed watching cooking shows and listening to jazz music. He was a proud member of N.A., and attended church services.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Shuler-Carson, whom he married July 3, 1993; six stepchildren, Shawn Bennett and Kiev Knight of Ashtabula, Manasha Brown of Mt. Clair, Calif., Trevian Archer and Lavert Fudge of Riverside, Calif., and Chiyaukaa Archer of Columbus; eight grandchildren; seven sisters, Shirley Dyer, Violetta McGee, Darnetta Carson and Denita Fields, all of Ashtabula, Tari Rodriguez and Annette Franklin of Erie, Pa., and Amanda Thomas of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two brothers, Raymond and Rudy Barnes of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his mother; and his father and stepmother, Philip and Zenobia Barnes.
Service is noon Saturday at the Peoples Baptist Church, 3837 West Ave., Ashtabula, with Herman Fleming, superintendent of the Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery, Ashtabula Township.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, and 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.

Lucille J. Long
ASHTABULA - Lucille Jean Long, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Cleveland, the daughter of Nick and Filomena Marrone and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1974, when she married her husband.
Prior to her retirement, she worked at Sherwood Refractories, Euclid.
She enjoyed reading and crocheting, and attended First Grace Gospel Church.
Survivors include her husband, Donald, whom she married on June 8, 1974; a son, Richard Vesey of Cleveland; six stepchildren, Rick and Tim Long of Sherman, Texas, Annette Acierno of Ashtabula, Donald Jr., Keith, and Colleen Dinger, all of Conneaut; a grandson; two great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; two sisters, Julia Zingale and Josephine Cook of Cleveland; and a brother, Clement Marrone of Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Vesey; two sisters, Virginia Tartaglio and Clemantine Delease; and her parents.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. David Adams of First Grace Gospel Church will officiate. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery, Saybrook Township.

Janis D. Crews
LAKE CITY, Fla. Janis D. Crews, 56, died Dec. 18, 2000, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Crews, the daughter of John F. "Jack" and Lucille (Hayes) Benz, was a native of Ashtabula. She moved to Lake City from Raleigh, N.C., in 1979.
A 1962 graduate of Lakeland High School, she graduated from Dental Hygienist School in Jacksonville, Fla., and was a certified nursing assistant.
She was the office manager for DJ's Quick Stop stores for 15 years. She worked for the CARC group home as an activities coordinator and had recently gone to work with the Corner Drug Store at the Interface Youth Program North West, a shelter for runaway youths in Lake City.
Mrs. Crews was a member of the Epiphany Catholic Church.
She loved to cook and to sew, especially for members of the CARC.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Forthofer of Lake City and Matt Forthofer of Chicago; a daughter, Marsha Forthofer of Gainesville, Fla.; her mother of Lake City; a brother, Dennis "D.J." Benz of Lake City; a sister, Carol Williams of Lakeland, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Hailee Forthofer of Chicago.
A funeral mass was held Dec. 22 at the Epiphany Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Morse officiating. Interment was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Biggs Funeral Home, 3801 S. First St., Lake City, was in charge of arrangements.
