William J. Kopas
ASHTABULA - William J. Kopas, 49, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 28, 1953, in Mt. Holly, N.J., the son of William and Gertrude (Becker) Kopas.
He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a member of the American Legion and the Ashtabula Eagles.
He was a former employee of Elkem Metals and City Cab.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Pyotsia); a daughter, Erin Mae Kopas Cook of Ashtabula; four stepdaughters, Sheila Corey of Florida, Shari Daniels of Ashtabula, Sharlene Hall of Kingsville Township and Shana Peer of Conneaut; eight step-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Ann Short; and a brother, Eugene.
Service is 10 a.m. Friday at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula. Burial will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
Calling hours are 9 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
Richard D. Wheeler
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP - Richard D. “Ike” Wheeler, 72, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in his home.
He was born June 13, 1929, in Conneaut, the son of Bernie and Eulah (Braden) Wheeler.
Prior to retirement, Mr. Wheeler was employed by Olin Chemical as a pipe fitter. He also worked for Sears and DIY Home Warehouse.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 943.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice (Baker); two stepsons, Dean Nottingham of Conneaut and David Nottingham of Ashtabula; two stepdaughters, Terry Brake of Diamond and Pamela Mollick of Ashtabula; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Micky of Ashtabula and Robert of Florida; and a sister, Geraldine Nelson of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas; three brothers, Cyrus, Bernie and Edward; and three sisters, Mary Alice Christy, Betty Crandall and Vera Champlin.
Service is 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 1550 West 19th St., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Lee Freeborn officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home.
Helge E. Sanfield
ASHTABULA - Helge Edward Sanfield, 89, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Carington Park nursing center, Ashtabula.
He was born June 20, 1912, in Ashtabula, the son of Isakki and Josefina (Hietapelto) Tarvainen and was a lifelong resident area.
He was married to Verda Lindamood for 54 years.
He worked at Ohio and western Pennsylvania docks. He retired from Reliance Electric.
Mr. Sanfield served in World War II, in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the Harbor Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Mr. Sanfield was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed fishing, hunting, outdoor activities; and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Rita Denton of Morganstown W.Va., two brothers, William Sandfield of Cleveland and Hugo Hietapelto of San Diego, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Katie Denton of West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and sister, Anna Hietapelto.
A private graveside service will be held at the conveyance of the family.
Potti Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1329 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, has charge of the arrangements.
Reva A. Cole
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP - Reva A. Cole, 84, of Ashtabula Township, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at her home after a long illness.
She was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Charleston, W. Va., the daughter of John S. and Sada Mae (Higginbotham) Barnette and had been an area resident since 1950.
She was a cafeteria manager for 11 years in the Edgewood Schools.
Mrs. Cole was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashtabula and a member of the women's circle at the church. She was also a member of Lake Erie Chapter #10 Order of Eastern Star.
Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, gardening, reading and cooking.
Survivors include two sons, William Cole Jr. of Ashtabula and Wayne Cole of North Kingsville; six grandchildren, Bonita, Diana, William III, David, Donita and Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Orville Barnette, Arizona; three sisters, Naomi Moore and Mary McDaniels of Glasgo, W.Va., and Ruth Samples of Roanoke, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Cole Sr. in 1972, and two brothers, Doyle and Otis Barnette.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula. The Rev. Virgil Reeve of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hours will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Jo-Ann Ferguson
ASHTABULA - Jo-Ann Ferguson, 62, of Ashtabula Towers in Ashtabula, died Monday at her home.
Miss Ferguson was born April 14, 1939, in Struthers, a daughter of Francis and Kathryn Evon Ferguson. She moved to Ashtabula in 1970.
She worked at Ashcraft Industries in Ashtabula for several years.
She attended Kelloggsville Nazarene Church in Kelloggsville.
Surviving is a brother, David Ferguson of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Patty Ferguson; two brothers, Richard and James Ferguson; and two half-sisters, Hazel McMilland and Fran Coan.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be no graveside services.
Cleta E. Plotz
ASHTABULA -Cleta E. Plotz, 75, of East 15th Street, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Oct. 27, 1925, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Bruening) Phealan and spent most of her life in Ashtabula.
She married Clarence Plotz in November 1953 in Cherry Valley Township.
Mrs. Plotz was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time and taking care of her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and baking as well as playing cards and board games. She also enjoyed canning and crocheting small and large items. She enjoyed watching soap opera and continued to listen to them when her failing eyesight no longer permitted her to watch TV.
Mrs. Plotz was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Ashtabula.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Hall of Ashtabula and Clarence Jr. of Jefferson; three daughters, Nancy Westover, Jeanette Lucas and Carol Mariotti, all of Ashtabula; a brother, Charles Phealan of Richmond Hts.; a sister, Delores Jurman of El Toro, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Sept. 2, 1993; two brothers, William and Victor Phealan and a sister, Betty Ann Couture.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 1 p.m. Friday, with The Rev. Michael D. Balash officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Burton Funeral Home Chapel, 1329 Lake Ave., Ashtabula.

Trenton Solon Wolford
ASHTABULA - Trenton Solon Wolford was born prematurely, Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, and died in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was the son of Bob S. and Tami S. (Hare) Wolford of Ashtabula.
Survivors include his parents; his maternal grandparents, Norman P. and Judy A. (Grubham) Hare, of Ashtabula; his paternal grandparents, Delmar S. and Judy A. (Herron) Wolford, of Ashtabula; and his paternal great-grandmothers, Geneva Herron, of Wheeling, W.Va. and Eva Wolford of Elkins, W. Va.
A private service will be held at the Zaback-Czup Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth C. Roberts of the Pentecostal Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.
