Frank B. Loucks III
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Frank B. Loucks III, 65, of Center Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Sept. 4, 1936, in McClellandtown, Pa., he was a son of Frank B. and Margaret B. (Snyder) Loucks and had been an Ashtabula area resident since 1958.
He married Julianne Sangston on Nov. 28, 1958.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was a member of the American Legion, Dewey Howlett Post 103.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a truck driver for 35 years, driving for Eazor Express, Rimes Trucking, Praxair and Matlack.
Mr. Loucks was an active member of several masonic organizations, including Rising Sun Lodge 22 Free and Accepted Masons, Ashtabula; Covered Bridge Chapter 591 Order of Eastern Star, Rock Creek; and Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland. He also was a member and past master of El Kadir Grotto, Ashtabula, and Al Koran Temple, Cleveland.
He also was a member of Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Loucks enjoyed helping others, bowling, gardening, bird watching, tinkering, socializing, the Cleveland Indians and his beloved dog, Gypsy.
Survivors include his wife, Julianne; a son, Frank B. IV, of Richmond Heights; two daughters, Rosemarie Baker of Austinburg Township and Lynn A. Loucks of West Bend, Wis.; four grandchildren, Michael, Rachelle, B.J. and David; a brother, Dan of Ashtabula; a sister, Gwen Togger of Andover; and his mother, Margaret Heitanen, of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Service is 10 a.m. Saturday at Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. Burial will be in the masonic section of Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where Rising Sun Lodge 22 F&AM will conduct a masonic memorial service at 8:45 p.m.

Martin W. Smith
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Martin W. Smith, 73, of Saybrook Township died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born March 23, 1929, in Cleveland, the son of Burt and Viola (Martens) Smith.
A resident of Ashtabula most of his life, Mr. Smith was formerly employed with the Sealtest Milk Co. and Rockwell International. He served with the Army 1st Cavalry Division during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged in 1952.
Mr. Smith was a member of Maple Ridge Golf Course and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 943. He enjoyed golf and was an avid bowler, winning the city singles title in 1973 and 1980.
Survivors include his wife, Frances L. (Luce) Smith, whom he married Aug. 23, 1953, in Ashtabula; a son, Craig W. of Columbus; two stepsisters, Mar-Sue Randa and Joyce Enos, both of Kingsville; one stepbrother, John Buchtinec of Georgia; and one granddaughter, Allison L. Smith of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Vera Palmer.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, in Saybrook Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Long, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Childs & Williams Family Funeral Home, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.

Steve Placko
LADSON, S.C. - Steve Placko, 85, formerly of Ashtabula, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002.
He was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Coal Ridge, the son of Stephen and Anna (Bendik) Plachko.
Mr. Placko was a World War II veteran, serving the U.S. in the Navy. He was retired from Nelson Machine and Molded Fiber Glass Companies, where he was a foreman for 42 years.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Helen (Wrightnour) Placko; six children, Shirley Mason of Kingsville, Linda Niemi of Ashtabula, Jay Brail of Geneva, Martin Placko of Bremerton, Wash., and Monica Armstrong and Steve Placko, both of Phoenix; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Jerry Placko of Olmsted Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Martin Placko; and sister, Sue Vercimak.
James A. Dyal Crematorium in Summerville, S.C. handled the arrangements. Mr. Placko's cremated remains will be spread over the Pacific Ocean from the submarine USS Alaska by his son, Martin Placko.
Joan A. Hardiman
SAYBROOK - Joan A. Hardiman, 64, of Washington Blvd., died on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at her home.
Born on February 6, 1939 in Paducah, KY, she was the daughter of Albert and Sally (Beasley) Hardiman, and was a resident of Jefferson for the past 30 years before moving to Saybrook last August.
She was previously employed as director of the Mary Chatman Community Center in Ashtabula. She commenced her employment at the Mary Chatman Community Center as a volunteer and was instrumental in its growth and evolution. Most recently, she handled payroll and other administrative responsibilities for her brother, Attorney James Hardiman, in his Cleveland Office.
Her loving survivors include he mother, Sally Nelson of Cleveland; three sons, Calvin D. Shaw of Cleveland, Otis W. Conel, III of Saybrook, and Cedric Aaron Conel of Mentor; 12 grandchildren, Pamela, LaLisa, Ayasha K., Calvin D. Jr., Ariel D., Cassandra, Alana, Mychal, Otis IV, Kyle, Jessica L., and Jenna-Marie R.; five great-grandchildren; and six siblings, James L. Hardiman, and Tommy Nelson, both of Cleveland, Judith Robbins of Fayetteville, NC, Willie J. Nelson of Brandywine, MD, and twins, Cheryl Jones of Cleveland, and Daryl Nelson of Phoenix, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her father, Albert K. Hardiman.
Respects may be paid on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Ducro Funeral Home-Jefferson Home, 17 North Market Street, Jefferson, Ohio 44047.
Memorial Services will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Ducro Funeral Home-Jefferson Home, immediately following the paying of respects. The Dr. A. E. Williams, Pastor, will officiate.

Ernest A. Woodman
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Ernest A. Woodman, 94, of South Ridge Road West, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Park Haven Nursing Home in Ashtabula.
He was born March 23, 1908, in Mamaroneck, N.Y., to William and Mary (Haviland) Woodman. He was a former Connecticut and South Carolina resident.
Mr. Woodman married Mary Brean Sept. 25, 1930.
He worked for Homelite Inc. for 36 years, retiring in 1973. He enjoyed golfing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard Woodman of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a daughter, Audrey Subwick of Ashtabula; two granddaughters, Christine Paananen of Ashtabula and Tania Buchmelter of Nashua, N.H.; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a son, Allen, and a sister, Maud Conklin.
Funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.
Louis A. Laveck
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Louis A. Laveck, 80, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born March 20, 1921, in Ashtabula, he was a son of John and Frances (Mithers) Laveck.
A member of St. Joseph Church, he was employed by the former Lake Shore Steel as a welder.
He was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Gloria Butch; one son, John of Ashtabula; one daughter, Janet Monda of Ashtabula; two grandchildren; and one sister, Agnes Perry of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles, John and Joseph; and three sisters, Ann Fleissner, Cecelia Chapman and Mary Mithers.
Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Church.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula.
Thelma A. Copeland
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Thelma A. Copeland, 90, of Munson Hill Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville.
She was born June 8, 1912 in Conneautville, Pa., the daughter of Raymond and Ruby (Walton) Fuller.
She married Harold M. Copeland, May 23, 1931 in NY.
Mrs. Copeland resided in Conneautville, Albion and Springboro, Pa. in earlier years, later she moved to Saybrook.
Survivors include her four sons, Robert of Florida, William of Ashtabula, Chris and Lawrence of Saybrook; five daughters, Ruby Roderick, Marlene Fowler and Joan Copeland, all of Ashtabula, Carol Creswell of Youngstown, Pa., and Lila L. DeSorbes of Espyville, Pa.; a brother, Bernard Fuller of Akron; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1994; two sons, Claud and Chuck; two sisters, Grace and Lina; and brothers, Frank, Harley and Milo Fuller.
Services will take place at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Saybrook Township Cemetery.
The Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula is handling arrangements.
