Betty J. Butcher
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Betty J. Butcher, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Ashtabula County Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Ontario, Canada, the daughter of George and Edna (McNutt) Foster, and has been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
Mrs. Butcher was employed by the former Yoder Bros. Greenhouses of Ashtabula. She was a former member of Prospect Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed cooking and being with her family.
Survivors include four daughters, Bobbie Brindley, Susan Peggs, Beth Yost and Joni Hapach, all of Ashtabula; a son, Jerry Butcher of Conneaut; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Pellone of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Laurence, George and James Foster and Donald Whittenberger.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Childs and Williams Family Funeral Home, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Joe Ernspiker of Living Water Baptist Church of North Kingsville officiating. Burial will follow in Saybrook Cemetery, Saybrook Township.
Calling hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
David L. DeLeone
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - David L. DeLeone, 61, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at St. Vincent Hospital, Cleveland.
He was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Ravenna, the son of Albert and Eunice (Lawrence) DeLeone.
Mr. DeLeone graduated from Ravenna High School, where he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football and track. He was a featured singer in the choir and a trumpet player in the concert band.
In 1958, he joined the Marine Corps, where he played trumpet in the famous Marine Corps Band in Quantico, Va. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the Rifle Expert Badge, and was honorably discharged in 1962.
Mr. DeLeone earned a degree in education from Kent State University and a master's degree in education from Youngstown State University. He also did post-graduate work toward his Ph.D. and administration certificate at Youngstown State and Cleveland State Universities. He earned an administrative specialist degree, superintendents certificate, and business manager certificate.
For 18 years, he was a teacher, coach, and administrator in the northeast Ohio schools. He taught and coached in Rootstown, Maple Heights, and Cuyahoga Hill Boys School. He served as assistant principal and administrative assistant in the Ashtabula School System. He was a business manager at the West Geauga Local School District and principal at the Lake Erie Correctional Institution, Conneaut. After his retirement, he tutored students in the Ashtabula Area City Schools.
Mr. DeLeone was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, the Ohio and National Education Associations, the Ohio and National Associations of Secondary School Principals, the Ohio School Boards Association, the Ohio Association of School Business Officials, and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
A devoted husband, he enjoyed golfing, music, reading, and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen (Jensen, ) whom he married in May 1967; two sons, David of Ashtabula, and Michael of Concord Township; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Rachel, and Joey DeLeone; and three sisters, Alberta Carlin of Ravenna, Jane Petrella of Kent, and Pat Pappano of Tallmadge.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 10 a.m. Thursday at the Guerriero Funeral Home, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula, with burial to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Saybrook Township.
Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Carolyn S. Long
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Carolyn Sue Long, 65, of North Bend Road, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa.
She was born Jan. 17, 1938, in Ivanhoe, Va., the daughter of Eugene and Gladys (Richardson) Stoneman. She had been an area resident for most of her life.
A 1956 graduate of Ashtabula High School, Mrs. Long enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting, reading poetry and composing a scrapbook. She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest G. Long, whom she married Jan. 17, 1959; three daughters, Susan Leonard, Karen Garnett and Kelly Sunderlin, all of Ashtabula; a son, Robert Long of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, David, Tommy, Stephen, Brianna and Felicia; three brothers, K. Douglas Stoneman, Larry E. Stoneman and Randall Stoneman, all of Ashtabula; and a sister, Carol Rey of Boca Raton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by a son, in infancy; and her parents.
Service will be at the family's convenience. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.

Mary H. Balog
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Mary H. Balog, 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at her home.
She was born May 31, 1923, and was a Saybrook Township resident for many years.
Miss Balog was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Balog, and a brother, Alexander Balog. She was survived by her brother Charles P. Balog, who died four days later, on Jan. 4, 2003, in Ashtabula.
Graveside service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edgewood Cemetery, Ashtabula Township. The Rev. Louis Medgyesi, of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Fairport Harbor, will officiate.

Mary O. Palmer
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Mary O. Palmer, 72, of Ninevah Road, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at home.
She was born Aug. 27, 1930, in Ashtabula, the daughter of William and Bessie (Gilbert) Jeffers.
Mrs. Palmer was a 1947 graduate of Ashtabula High School. She was employed as township clerk for Saybrook Township, from 1988 until retiring in 1995. She also served as clerk on the Saybrook Township Park Board and was active on the Saybrook Building Committee for the township office.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of Saybrook United Methodist Church, where she served as lay delegate to annual conference.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 943, where she served as president in 1959, and she was 7th District president in 1961. She was a member of Saybrook Grange; Saybrook PTO, where she served as secretary and treasurer; the Columbus Junior High School PTA; Harbor High athletic booster; Harbor High music boosters; Ashtabula County Alzheimer's Support Group; and she served on the Ashtabula High School alumni committee for 1947.
Survivors include two sons, Barry R. Palmer of Saybrook Township, William P. Palmer of Painesville; a daughter, Peggy Palmer of Saybrook Township; a grandson, Jacob Palmer; and two brothers, James Shew of Philadelphia, and Michael Sullivan of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Palmer, in 1993; and stepmothers Margaret Jeffers and Garnet Shew.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Saybrook United Methodist Church, 7900 Depot Road, Saybrook, with the Rev. Donna VanTrees officiating.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
Burial will be in Saybrook Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Support Group of Ashtabula County.
Charles H. Brink
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - Charles H. Brink, 79, formerly of Lake Road West, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Carrington Park Nursing Home, Ashtabula.
The son of Henry and Ruth (Askew) Brink, he was born April 13, 1922 in Ashtabula.
Mr. Brink was a member of the Second Congregational United Church of Christ in Ashtabula.
Survivors include three cousins, Jean Askew Sava, who took care of him for more than 30 years, Carla Madarena of Saybrook and Ruth Sava of New York City, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert.
No services or calling hours will be observed.

Herman C. Smalley
SAYBROOK – Herman C. Smalley, 91, of North Bend Road, died Saturday evening, April 12, 2003, at the Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Austinburg.
He was born December 12, 1911, in Louth, England, the son of Benjamin and Lilly (Scott) Smalley. He was a resident of Saybrook Township since 1947. He and his wife also lived in Vero Beach, Fla., when he retired, but they returned to Ashtabula in 1999.
Mr. Smalley graduated from Interstate School of Commerce, Cleveland, Ohio. He retired from Reliance Electric after 31 years of service, as the superintendent of the mechanical dept.
He served on the board of the Reliance Credit Union and the Saybrook Township Park Board for many years. Mr. Smalley was a member of Masonic Lodge 334 F&AM of Geneva and El Kadir Grotto, Ashtabula, Ohio, of which he served as Monarch in 1972. He was also a member of the Saybrook United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ernestine (Schmidt) Smalley, whom he married August 21, 1937, in Cleveland; two daughters, Gayle Marie Mock of Granville, Ohio, and Suzanne Scott (David) Hill of Youngstown, Ohio; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myra Joan Thornburg, of Mentor, Ohio.
Mr. Smalley was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Gertrude Smalley; and two brothers, Benn and George Smalley.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, April 26, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. in the Saybrook United Methodist Church, 7900 S. Depot Road, Saybrook, with the Rev. Donna Van Trees, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Kingsville, Ohio, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saybrook United Methodist Church, 7900 S. Depot Road, Ashtabula. Envelopes will be available at the church. The Childs & Williams Family Funeral Home, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.
