Robert A. Sunagel
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Robert Arthur Sunagel, 63, died, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Nash General Hospital.
He was born Feb. 19, 1938, in Ashtabula, the son of Arthur Henry and Phyllis Corinne Sunagel.
Mr. Sunagel was a member of the Masons, Benevolent Policeman's Association and was an officer on the Ashtabula and Brookfield Police Departments.
He served as chief of police for a time in Rock Creek. He was also a K-9 officer with his dog, Bear, in Newton Falls.
He was most recently employed by Sara Lee as an electrician.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of 28 years; three daughters, Pamela Sunagel of Newport News, Va., Phyllis Walters of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Julie Newbern of Portsmouth, Va.; two stepsons, Ken Hannas of Chesapeake, Va., and Robert Hannas of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Betty Emmett of Plymouth Township and eight grandchildren, Joshua Walters, Susan Walters, Sarah Newbern, Andrew Hannas, Richard Hannas, Jackie Hannas, Lucas Hannas and Riley Hannas; and the Wilcox family of Rocky Mount, N.C.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margerie, Marilyn and Marie.
Service is 1 p.m. Thursday, in the chapel of Bowling Funeral Home and Crematory, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, N.C., 27804..

Summer Lynn Putt
CONNEAUT - Summer Lynn Putt, two-and-one-half months old, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at her home.
Born Jan. 14, 2001, in Ashtabula, she was a daughter of Virginia A. Putt.
Survivors include her mother; her maternal grandmother, Tina VanBoxel of Conneaut; two aunts, Christina Hippely of Arizona and Sarah Emerick of Conneaut.
She was preceded in death by an uncle, Alvin Emerick in 1987.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery, Geneva. The Rev. William Offut of the First Baptist Church and Study of Jefferson will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.
Contributions may be made to the family.

Helen M. Sikora
CONNEAUT - Helen M. Sikora, 90, of South Amboy Road, Conneaut, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at her home.
She was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Nova Ruda, Poland, the daughter of Joseph and Pauline (Michalski) Krzyzanawicz.
She had lived with her son in Conneaut the past four years. She had lived in Dunkirk, N.Y., since 1913, where she was employed as a sewing machine operator in the lingerie department of the former Van Raalte Corp.
She was a member of St. Hedwigs Church.
Survivors include a son, Leonard Sikora of Conneaut; two sisters, Mary Snow and Kate Bekeleski, both of Dunkirk, N.Y.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1980; a son, Donald, in 1995; three brothers, Joseph, Walter and Anthony; and a sister, Winifred Sobczak.
Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Hedwig's Church in Dunkirk, N.Y., with the Rev. Joseph Janaczek officiating. Burial will be at St. Hedwig's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Mackowiak Funeral Home, 56 E. Doughty St., Dunkirk, N.Y.
Local arrangements are being handled by the Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.
Dennis E. Peterson
WINCHESTER, Mass. - Dennis E. Peterson, 49, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000 at the New England Medical Center in Winchester, Mass.
He was born June 4, 1951 in Ashtabula, the son of Eric R. and Elvi (Lehtonen) Peterson.
He was on medical leave from General Dynamics, Needham, Mass., where he worked as a subcontracts manager. Previously he worked for Norden Systems and the Internal Revenue Service. He also served several years in the VISTA Program in Grand Island, Neb.
A 1969 graduate of Harbor High School, he received a BS degree in business from the Ohio State University and an MA from Northwestern University.
An ardent sports fan, he supported the Boston Red Sox, traveling to spring training regularly. He also supported the Ohio State Buckeye football team. He was an avid wine collector and enjoyed traveling, having made several trips to wine regions in France, Italy, and California.
He is survived by his cousins, Arlan Collier and Mike Lehtonen of Ashtabula; Robert Lehtonen, Chuck Lehtonen, Carol O'Connor, Sally Hoke, and Pautiina Myers of Conneaut; Pat Hazeltine and Evah Pad of Jefferson; Marlene Murphy of Painesville; Candy Myllymaki of Florida; and Katrina Radman of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. David Hofer will officiate. Burial at Edgewood Cemetery will be at a later date.

Mary V. Marano
CONNEAUT - Mary V. Marano, 82, formerly of Depot Street, Conneaut, OH, died Saturday evening, August 9, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center. She was born Oct. 28, 1920, in Orangeville, PA, a daughter of Archie and Nellie Mae (Green) Emerson.
Mrs. Marano lived in Conneaut most of her life. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed cooking.
Survivors include her sister, Florence Kilfoil of Greenville, PA; her brother, Carl Emerson of Geneva, OH; and a number of nieces, nephews, and more distant relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nick, in 1990; and two sisters, Clara Emerson and Lillian Jones.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, Aug. 13, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 480 State St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH.
John W. Sanford
CONNEAUT - John W. "Jack" Sanford, 79, former Conneaut police chief, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at his home on Buffalo Street.
He was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Conneaut, the son of Phil and Dorothy (Henesey) Sanford. He resided in Conneaut his entire life.
Mr. Sanford began his career with the Conneaut Fire Department and became a patrolman with the Conneaut Police Department in 1950. He was appointed chief at the age of 29 in 1954, and he later retired after 35 years of service.
After his retirement from the police department, he was employed by the Port Authority as a boat ramp attendant.
Mr. Sanford was a World War II veteran, serving as a turret gunner on B-25 bombers in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church, the former Veterans of Foreign Wars of Conneaut, the Fraternal Order of Police and Prisoner of War Association. In his leisure time, he enjoyed motorcycling, weight lifting, walking on the beach and following his children and grandchildren in their sporting events.
Survivors include daughters Barbara Sanford of Charlottesville, Va. and Becky Soller of Conneaut; sons Joseph of Union City and Mike, Daniel and Jeff Sanford, all of Conneaut; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; half-sisters Jackie Walsh of Florida and Sandy Best, Patricia Wadsworth, Donna Fuller and Carol Stump, all of Conneaut; and half brothers Pete Sanford of California and Harland Sanford of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia, brother Charles "Ed" Sanford, sisters Jeanne Kessler and Phyllis Carlson; and half-brother Phil Sanford.
Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Mary's Church on State Street, officiated by the Rev. Raymond Thomas. Internment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion.
Friends may call at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
The family suggests memorial donations be made in his name to the Conneaut Fraternal Order of Police. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
Frances G. Hirst
VENICE, Fla. - Frances G. Hirst, 103, formerly of Conneaut, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Venice, Fla.
She was born Feb. 5, 1899, in Conneaut, the daughter of Charles H. and Carrie (Salisbury) Green and had been a Florida resident for many years.
Survivors include a nephew, Gordon Green of Hudson, N.H.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George Hirst.
Burial was Thursday in Center Cemetery, Conneaut.
The Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, had charge of the arrangements.
